Hour #4: The Vikings Mistake, DeRosa Doesn’t Know The Rules, & The Ultimate Bounce Back Spot

BetMGM Tonight

About this episode

Pat Boyle explains why he is not a fan of the Minnesota Vikings bringing in Kyler Murray as their next starting Quarterback, and how the pressure is officially on Head Coach Kevin O’Connell after admitting failure on the draft pick of J.J. McCarthy. Then, a roast of Team USA Manager Mark DeRosa for not knowing the rule when it comes to qualification in the World Baseball Classic, and explains how the Americans are incredibly fortunate to not be eliminated due to his mistake. The hour wraps with why the Denver Nuggets are the bet to make tonight as seven and a half point favorites over the Houston Rockets, in the ultimate bounce back spot. Plus, why the H-Town will not win more than a single playoff series, when it’s all set and done.

The best NBA game of the night tonight. We'll do a little hotter. Cold. We'll talk a little world-based ball classic in just a little bit because it looks like Team USA is just about into the knock-out round, barring a miracle comeback from Mexico. But I want to talk some football here right now. And I think Kevin O'Connell, who we've kind of looked at here the last couple of years since he has taken over as the Minnesota Vikings head coach. And in Kevin O'Connell's, let's see. Is it four years already as a head coach of the Vikings? In his four years as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, they went 13 and 4 in 2022 with Kirk Cousins as quarterback. And then they lost to the Giants in the wildcard game.

Then a down year, seven and 10 bunch of quarterback injuries. They were down to like their third and fourth stringer Sean Manion, who's now the offense coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles playing quarterback that year for the Vikings. Then last year they get Sam Donald and Kevin O'Connell blows everybody's nips off because he turns Sam Donald into a good quarterback again. Then Sam Donald goes to Seattle and wins a Super Bowl. The Vikings won 14 and three that year, lose to the Rams in the wildcard game because Donald, you know, send a rel of the clock struck midnight on him. Now again, he's a Super Bowl champion now. And Kevin O'Connell, along with GM Quasiodofo men, so I'm not giving, I'm not completely absolving Quasiodofo men, so of his role as the Vikings GM, he's the one that he got fired because of it. A Kevin O'Connell is known and reported to have a lot of power and a lot of decision-making prowess within the Minnesota Vikings organization. And Kevin O'Connell said, no, Sam Donald can't get us over the hump, Sam Donald can't

win us a playoff game. Well, the other option last year in the off season was potentially Aaron Rogers, who there was reported interest, Rogers was, was open to completing his Brett Farve cosplay and going to the Vikings and it was reported that Kevin O'Connell and Quasiodofo men's in the Viking and the Viking said, no thanks Aaron, no thanks. No thanks to a first ballot Hall of Famer, a four-time MVP, a Super Bowl champion. No thanks to a guy in Sam Donald, who, you only would have had to pay him $30 million a year, that's what the Seahawks got him for, $33 million a year. No thanks to the guy that won us 14 games, but yes, came back down to Earth against, you know, a couple of really good defenses in the final two games of the season. No, we're going to go with JJ McCarty, the guy that we basically reached for the tent overall pick on, guy that tours Miniscus in the preseason in his rookie season and missed all of that and who never played a snap in the NFL.

We're going to pass on Aaron Rogers, we're going to pass on Sam Donald, we're going to go with JJ McCarty and I don't think you need me to tell you how that ended up working out. JJ McCarty, basically in the bottom five of all quarterbacks in completion percentage, in yards per pass attempted and was just brutal, just flat out brutal. The Vikings started the season four and eight, they were done, but then with Carson and then with JJ McCarty coming back healthy, the Vikings won five in a row and you look back in the annals of history and you'll see a Viking season that was nine and eight despite those last couple of wins coming against the Washington commanders where Jayden Daniels got hurt in the first half of the game, I went against the Dallas Cowboys, I went against the New York Giants who were tanking.

The impressive Christmas day went against the Lions, I'll give them that, that was because their defense was awesome, thank you Brian Flores and then I went against the Green Bay Packers who sat everybody and they didn't care if they lost by 50 points. So the Vikings get five wins in a row to end the season and this off season it's the reported from Tony Pauline that the Vikings are quietly exploring an exit strategy from JJ McCarty and they have essentially admitted failure. They've admitted that drafting JJ McCarty and choosing him over Sam Donald, choosing him over Aaron Rogers was a mistake, Kevin O'Connell kept his job, the GM Quasiodofo Mensa, he did not, he was fired ultimately because of the decision to go with JJ McCarty. But like I said, it's widely reported that Kevin O'Connell is basically a quasi-zar in

the Vikings organization to the point where he was asked at the combine if he would want the GM job. Imagine that, Bill Bella checked status, Kevin O'Connell, the plate caller, the head coach, the quarterback, whisperer, the quarterback guru and maybe the GM. Right now they don't have a GM, Rob Brzynski, who's been with the Vikings organization for like two decades, he is the interim de facto GM if you will, he's the one answering all the questions, he answered all the questions at the combine and the plan is the reported plan is they don't plan to hire a GM until after the draft. That means it's Rob Brzynski, Kevin O'Connell, working, so what I'm looking for, working, I don't want to say in cahoots, working together, sometimes you try to be smarter than you are, I probably should have just said working together, kept it like, kept it simple, like

a simple man, you'd be a simple man Pat, it's Kevin O'Connell and Rob Brzynski working hard together on the draft and who the Vikings are going to select in free agency. And that leads us to what's the biggest thing in free agency for the Minnesota Vikings. Find out who your quarterback's going to be. And for the last week or so, it's widely assumed it's going to be Kyler Murray. And Kyler Murray is now, we saw the reports today, he is officially taking a visit to Minnesota tomorrow after he was finally officially released today by the Arizona Cardinals and I think it is a foregone conclusion that Kyler Murray is going to be signed by tomorrow or Friday at the league minimum, which is good because the Cardinals are paying basically all of that contract to release him. And it appears as if there isn't going to be a quarterback competition, it appears

we're trending towards Kyler Murray just straight up being given the role of QB1 for the Minnesota Vikings in 2026. And I'll say this, quasi-adopo Mensa, he didn't get to keep his job because of the decisions they made with the quarterback last year. There's no scapegoat now for Kevin O'Connell. If they're going with Kyler Murray, that's Kevin O'Connell's choice. And so KOC is putting his reputation and perhaps his job on the line this year of Kyler Murray is Minnesota's quarterback. Phone number to join the show, 310-840-4910, that's 310-840-4910, you can also tweet me the app app oil 44. And I've been a vocal opponent, if you will, of Kyler Murray here this entire off season.

I don't think he's a very good quarterback anymore. I think he had a good 2-3 year run in Arizona. Unfortunate that he tore his ACL a couple years back. But this season played five games, suffered a season ending injury again, if you'll call it that. So if you're a soft benching, I think if the Cardinals are even halfway in it or if Chicobee percent wasn't out playing Kyler Murray, think about how sad that is, Chicobee percent far outplay Kyler Murray on the field in there, you look at their numbers. Then if that didn't happen, Kyler Murray probably would have played the rest of the year. But I think it was a soft benching and it was essentially a soft release. I think they were getting, you know, Matthew Austin for it, the GM in Arizona was basically like, yeah, we're done with them. I don't care if he's healthy or not. He ain't playing the rest of the year for us. In the first five games that Kyler Murray played, I wasn't impressed with Adolf. Adolf, through for less than 200 yards of game. When I watched him run, I didn't see the prime bushy-tailed athletic prowess Kyler Murray

showed when he was in his prime, making Murray magic, making plays happen using his legs. I didn't see that. My eyes could be wrong. They've been wrong before. They've been right before. I think Kevin O'Connell perhaps risking his job and his reputation to go with Kyler Murray. It's one hell of a gamble. It's one hell of a gamble that I don't know if he makes it to 2027 to tell the tale of. So what were the other options this year in free agency for the Minnesota Vikings? Well, they could assign Malik Willis. I would have went all out to beg for Aaron Rogers to play quarterback for them. Who knows if that conversation was had? Maybe they called Aaron Rogers in the first day of the offseason or maybe legal tampering? Maybe they did a little illegal tampering? I mean, who the hell is ever going to know if Kevin O'Connell talked to Aaron Rogers on the cell phone? Nobody. And maybe they did say, maybe Kevin O'Connell said, hey, Aaron, I screwed up, man. I'm willing to admit I'm wrong.

Here's my humble pie, but we want you. We need you. We need you to play quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings here this season. Maybe he did say that. And maybe Aaron said, hey, man, I'm going to tell you guys the same thing. I told the Pittsburgh Steelers, I'll do my best Aaron Rogers in pressure here. I don't know. I'm not right. I don't know if I'm coming back to play football. You know, I've got a lot of family things. I got to figure out. I'm here. I'm looking at the beach. I'm enjoying things right now. I can't give you an answer. And maybe Kevin O'Connell said, well, I kind of need one. Because we can't do what the Steelers did last year. We can't just wait for you, man. Can't wait till April. Can't wait till May. I got to have a backup. I have to have a plan by the time free agency starts. And maybe that was the end of it. But I would have went all out for Aaron Rogers. Out of care at 42. Gonna be 43. I think he's a better quarterback still at this time than Kyle Emery is. Now, I even think Kirk Cousins would have been a better option.

Knows the system, played for Kevin O'Connell, had success. 13 games of them a couple of years ago. Now, sure, Kirk Cousins named the same quarterback that he was five years ago. He's got a tourney killings to his name since then. Still, you want familiarity. You want comfort or ability. That's what so many of these coaches and so many of these GMs, they, as smart as we think they are sometimes. They revert back to this, they panic. If things are out of their control, if things are out of their comfort zone, what would have been in Kevin O'Connell's comfort zone more than Kirk Cousins. But instead, they're risking it all on getting Kyle Emery to be committed, to be healthy, and to be the quarterback that he once was in Arizona. And I just don't think he's that anymore. 310-840-4910. I mean, I've said it time and time again. The Arizona Cardinals literally had to put a clause in his contract requiring him to have

more independent film study, because it was the worst kept secret that Kyle Emery was a call of duty fiend, a video game addict. And they worried about the guy who is the most important position in sports, the unquestioned leader of a locker room. They worried about that guy's commitment to the point where they had to put a clause in his contract. And if you had put that in his contract, why the hell did you ever pay him $45 million a year to begin with? I'm sure Arizona's wondering that question. I'm sure they've wondered it for the last two years here. And then I know the op, if you disagree with me, and you think Kyle Emery to the Vikings makes him a playoff team this year, you think that because in the last three years, four years alone, we've seen Geno Smith fail with the Jets and eventually wind up in Seattle and had a couple of double-digit wind seasons. And you think that then Sam Donald, who was at rock bottom, goes to the Minnesota Vikings

and gets him 14 winds and then goes to the Seahawks and wins a freaking Super Bowl. And if you think because you saw Daniel Jones, who the giants kicked him to the curb, he goes to the Colts and through 10 games, he was eight and two putting up some of the best numbers in football and you think, well, Pat, if that could happen for these guys, you're telling me, Kyle Emery doesn't have the talent to do that for Minnesota. And I'll tell you that for every Geno Smith and for every Sam Donald and for every Daniel Jones and for every quarterback that doesn't have success with one franchise and one organization, that they'll have success with another one for every one of those quarterbacks. I can point you in a hundred different examples of guys that bounce from team to team and never have success and they turn into perennial backups. And I think in another, we'll see history will tell if I'm right or if I'm wrong, but I think in another three years from now, Kyle Emery will be a perennial backup.

We will look at him the way we look at Jacobi Preset, who's the starter again in Arizona this year. So who knows, maybe Jacobi Preset has his Sam Donald year or his Daniel Jones year. We will look at Kyle Emery the same way we look at Gardner Minshue. We'll say, yeah, I wonder what team he's going to be the backup for. And I don't think Minnesota's going to the playoffs this year with Kyle Emery as their quarterback because straight up, I just don't think he's that good of a quarterback anymore. And that's Kevin O'Connell's decision. He wants Kyle Emery. Because he had no foam men said got fired because they wanted JJ McCarthy. If the Vikings go six and 11 this year, should Kevin O'Connell get fired? If Kyle Emery is the reason why they go six and 11 or seven and 10, despite what I think

is a damn good defense led by Brian Flores once again, despite them having Justin Jefferson, despite them having Jordan Addison and TJ Hawkinson. I don't think Kyle Emery has given you the quarterback play that you need it, that you need to be a playoff team. Can't see over the line of scrimmage. Never had a big arm. I think what he would use to make up for that is his legs, his ability to make plays happen on the run outside the pocket. The guy that's had two season ending injuries in the last four years. I don't think you could say, oh, he's only 26 or he's only 20. 27. Kyle Emery is 28 actually. Turns 29 in August. So it'll be 29 at the start of the season. Oh, Patty's not even 30 years old. I don't think Kyle Emery is a winner. I think Kevin O'Connell has built a reputation as a winner, as a quarterback guru, as this genius offensive mind. And the time he was Sean McVase offense coordinator for the Rams. And in the two years where he looked like a damn genius with Kirk Cousins getting him

13 wins and Sam Donald getting him 14 wins. I think we're going to be halfway through the season. And they might make that move back to JJ McCarthy. And maybe, maybe then if Kevin O'Connell can get the most out of JJ McCarthy, maybe that's enough to save his job for 2027. Maybe they're back all in on JJ McCarthy in 2027, but I got a feeling Kyle Emery is going to be one and done with the Minnesota Vikings 310 840 4910 is the number to join the show. That's 310 840 4910 when we come back. It's looking more and more like team USA is going to the knockout round after that disaster last night. And why manager Mark Dorosa should not be a manager anytime soon for a major league ball club. I'm Pat Boyle. It's his bedroom GM tonight here on Westwood on sports.

Speaking of which, before we take Mark the Rosa to the woodshed, Combs, let's find out whether or not Team USA is going to get into the knockout round here. Needed some help. Needed some help from the Italians. Needed them to beat Mexico. And Italia is doing their job. It's 7-1 at the end of the 7th inning.

But I guess we have to wait till this goes final to officially declare if Team USA is going to get the help they needed in advance to the knockout round. Can you explain this tiebreaker scenario to me, please? No, I can't. Because to be honest with you, I'm so confused by it. So since Italy has scored five or more runs, the US is good. Unless somehow Mexico comes back to tie it and this game goes 13 innings and then all of a sudden the US is out again. And Italy and Mexico will move on no matter what. I don't know. I just reach up pass and tweet as the updates at every time that somebody scores and that way I know. I'm just waiting, that's my thing. I'm waiting till the game's over. And then if they tell me the US is in, then the US is in. If they tell me the US is out, I'm going to never want to see Marcarosa's face ever again. Yeah, so basically the one, like the bad thing that couldn't happen was Mexico beat Italy and Italy scored less than five runs.

So that's good. We're in the clear. Italy's got seven. As long as Italy wins in nine innings, Team USA advances. But yeah, I guess if it goes because it's they basically take the team's ERA, if you will. It's not just runs allowed because you can play less than nine innings because there's been some mercy rule games in this tournament already. And so if there goes to 13 innings, then just by that, like if it goes to 13 innings, no matter the score, Team USA is out or if it goes to 13 innings. And it's like 15 to 15. Yeah. I think it feels about this all day because I read an article this morning that said Mexico, if Mexico beats Italy, it's fine as long as they score five or more runs. And that was on USA today. And now it's Italy didn't need to score five or more runs unless it goes 13. And then unless I saw I'm done trying to figure it out. It's I'm.

Yeah. So we just need Italy to not have an epic collapse here. Yeah. Thank you, Aaron Nola or should I say add a Nola because he dealt five shut out innings. Vinnie Pascuantino has already gone deep twice. John Aberti has already gone deep for Italy and the Azeri are up seven to one. You know, I asked if you could potentially play that final out call from Italy's win over Team USA last night. I don't know if you ended up grabbing that. But do you have that? I do not have. I thought we were grabbing the video. So I thought maybe Matti was grabbing us. So maybe a miscommunication. Maybe a miscommunication. Um, I did not grab it. But but I can. Okay. I can grab it and we can have it for for the next segment. Yeah. I mean, it's okay. Monty says he got a lot of. Now don't get me wrong. I want Team USA to win. Yeah. And I want Aaron Judge to hit 50 home runs and be the best baseball player on the planet that he is.

Yeah. Um, you know, Matto HeoTani. It's, so what, the guy can pitch. Who cares? But anyway, I want Team USA to win, but I got a I got to say, man, as an Italian-American in my heart proud to see Italia get a big win when nobody gave me a chance. And now they're giving Team USA the help they need. So I would love Italy to get through in the knockout rounds and, uh, and see who they end up playing. you mentioned this as well with the format. You basically play the teams in each pools, play each other in the quarter finals. So we'd be looking at USA versus Italy again in the quarter finals tomorrow or Friday. Yeah. So actually they would be playing. I had that wrong too. It's they actually play the winner of pool a. So they will actually play Canada on Friday. So Canada will be. And that means we would get. Yeah. That means USA would play Puerto Rico then

in the quarter final. Oh, yes. Well, luckily, you know, half a team Puerto Rico that basically couldn't make it to the World Baseball Classic because of insurance reasons. Yeah. I mean, they didn't call Geico. So it's, you know, they got stuck. All right. So let's, let's, let's talk about why the hell everybody's pissed off at Mark Derosa and just how bad of a result, how devastating of a loss that could have been last night to Italy because it's one thing if you go out on top. But it's another thing that, you know, we basically, we, we kind of put a bunch of guys in the starting lineup yesterday that wouldn't normally play. And that's one thing if you're doing that knowing that you haven't punched your ticket to the quarter finals, but Mark Derosa was the manager of team USA and in a lot of baseball circles could be next up for a major league baseball managerial job. I don't think so anymore because buddy didn't know the format, but he didn't know that we weren't automatically in the quarter finals before

that game against team Italy. And he was on MLB network and literally said our ticket is punched to the quarter finals. That's why I want to get some of these guys, you know, some at that's here. And basically talking about how they were, you know, they were, you know, drinking, they were getting after a little bit in the clubhouse the night before the Italy game. He could send you some guy's feet were dragging. Mark Derosa not knowing the rules and not knowing the freaking format could have caused the US a trip to the elimination rounds. How embarrassing, how embarrassing is that for Mark Derosa who then talked after the game and he was like, oh, I didn't, I didn't mean that. I misspoke. I mean, he is lucky that the pitchfork and poor him is not lining up outside his door right now ready to tear his head off. Yeah, he didn't misspeak. He just, he didn't know and then he tried to backtrack. It's a very bad look for a guy who in baseball circles is thought of being at the top of the food chain when it comes to the next managerial cycle. It's a really bad look and he's going

to have some explaining to do. He's going to have to figure this thing out now. Look, it's probably a move point. If the US gets into the into the elimination rounds and they find a way to win the gold medal, then things change for Mark Derosa. But this is a bad look and it's embarrassing. Yeah, because people overlook it. Look, I mean, there's bad calls all the time. You see people that do things and they, you know, don't necessarily make sense. They don't understand. I mean, we watched Tony Lurus. So one time, you know, call for an intentional walk when his pitcher had an Oh, when two count on on a batter. So we've seen smart baseball guys make really dumb decisions at times, right? So I think it gets better if, if the US comes back and wins this thing. But it's, it's a really bad look, man. It's, it's a really bad look because this US team for them, how does the whole team not know? Like, how does the whole, how does

not one person on the coaching staff or on the roster be like, hey, coach, just so you know, like, it looks good for us. But if we stumble against Italy, we're in trouble. Um, or you're even the guys on the broadcast on where he's on on MLB network. When he was on it, I forget what I would inside the clubhouse or whatever show he was doing on the MLB network. How do know those guys? They're covering the tournament. How did nobody tell this guy? Hey, coach, you've, you've, you've got some problems. If you lose to Italy, something could happen. Yeah, I mean, I guess, yeah, we're not, I'm not absolving Mark the Rosa of his fault. But yeah, it does, it does appear that nobody, yeah, nobody knew the format. Nobody knew the fact that USA was not already guaranteed his spot in the quarter finals before that game last night. Well, we just went over all the scenarios, all the tie breakers. Like, how could anybody really

understand what's going on here? I don't, I don't know why they don't just go, like, first of all, go head to head. So you have a round robin. If everybody's two and one, but you know, three and one, but Italy beat Mexico and the US beat Mexico, Mexico's out. Like, how is that not the tie breaker? Or then instead of all of these stupid, you know, runs giving up, why don't you just go to run scored? Yeah, head head. If, if, if Mexico beat Italy and Italy beat the US, and US beat Mexico, then I guess it could have, you know, then you're looking at a three-way tie, but then I guess you could go to aggregate score amongst those three games. I don't know. This is, you know, you, you got all pumped up for this tournament before it began. And I told you that's a tournament. Wasn't that exciting? I'm pumped because Italy keep putting runs on the board, baby. Let's go nine to one. What happened? What happened? We just had a run scoring double by, um, by an Italian. I don't know which one. He just had a run scoring double.

By, I don't even know who is that is that Antonucci again? Antonacci. A lot of you also put in our show chat that Pat Quentino had another home run. He's got the bombs tonight. Yeah. That guy's going to hit 50 this year for Kansas City. Pat Quentino, yeah. Yeah. And you know what I loved last night was after you, you talked so poorly about my guy PCA. He ended up with two bombs last night. And they lost. He had two bombs. Well, let's see him do something against Otani and Japan or Puerto Rico when it really matters, okay? Can't wait. Let's, let's see him do something in October for the Cubs because he did nothing last year. What? Am I wrong? Yeah. You're wrong. What are you doing the playoffs? Maybe what are you doing the playoffs? He's a big part of that team. His defense alone is enough in the playoffs. But he had decent. I mean, I can't. I don't know what the exact numbers

are. Um, but he wasn't terrible in the playoffs. Let me, let me look it up. Um, but he wasn't terrible in the playoffs. Now, now we're lauding a guy who was an all-star last year who you act like is one of the best players in baseball because of his defense. I don't. I never said he's one of the best players in baseball. Is he one of the more exciting players in baseball? Yes. But I'm very honest when it comes to my teams and my players, regardless of what you say, Pat, regardless of how you are, I am honest with my, with my players and my teams. He's very exciting, but is he the best player? Uh, no. Uh, so last year in the post season, uh, he had five hits in three RBI's and eight games in the post season. Okay. Five hits in eight games. So what was, so what was the batting average? What did he hit 200? Let me see here if I can pull it up. Uh, one is 165, 165, 185. Very fitting. I have five hits in eight games with three RBI's. Yeah, he hit 185.

I mean, he had a three for four game in the clinch game against San Diego. Oh, congrats. I mean, that's a high pressure game, right? The game that you need to clinch. Final game over through you. The winner go home game and he went three for four in that game. That doesn't count for anything. So what else happened in the World Baseball Classic? So we got Japan undefeated. No surprise. They actually took care of business. They have a manager that probably knows what they're doing. Uh, so they're the one seed. Yeah. And then Korea clinched the two seed because the tiebreaker for Chinese Taipei. Um, damn, so Australia, they, they were two and two. So it was Chinese Taipei. So it was Korea, but Korea had the tiebreaker because they had the most run scored. Yes. And yes. And then they will play, um, the pool D between Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Um, and they are playing right now. Last I looked, Dominican Republic was up three to two. That score may have changed. Seven three. Seven three DR. Seven

three DR is winning. Okay. At the top of the fifth. So this game is just for one and two. See, both teams have already clinched. So both are in. This is just for one. So one. So do Homer. Yeah. One Soto. Homer could tell Marta Homer, Vlad E. Homer and Fernando Tatis hit a three run bomb. So Venezuela will then play Japan Dominican Republic will play Korea. Okay. And probably give the edge to both Japan and the DR. And is that, do we avoid both of them? Does the US avoid both of those teams until the championship? Yes. Wow. Wow. All right. Good. Now the team, it sounds like Team USA is going to back their way into the final and watch us get smoked by Japan. That'll be fun. That'll be why would that be fun? Um, that was sarcastic. I figured I don't know, but with you, I mean, you, you love Shohei Otani. So it might be fun for you.

You think he's the go to decide who said I love Shohei Otani. I just said judge is the best player on the planet, not Shohei. All right. So hopefully Italy just keeps pouring this on. It's nine to one Italia. If they hold and win and don't collapse and win this game in nine innings, which that they're blowing them out, then that means Team USA will advance to the quarter finals. Thank you. And Mark Dorosa can take a sigh of belief. He sounds Italian. Maybe he blew the game on purpose. Dorosa. Maybe he wanted it. Let me get into the little conspiracy theory. Through the game. Okay. Maybe he did a little, uh, what's it called? Little Pete Rose. Maybe he bet on Italy. Maybe he threw the game. Oh, go. We're, I don't put that out there. Are we? No, no, that's a, that's a joke. That's a joke. I'm joking. All right. We'll take a short break after that one. 3108404910 is the phone number to join the show. Well, preview rockets and nuggets. Phone number to join the show is 310-840-4910. That's 310-840-4910. We'll get you caught up on the big NBA scores in college hoop scores going on in just a minute, but I want to talk about a game that's tipping off here in 20 minutes from now, and it's a big one. It's a monster one. In the Rocky Mountains, in Denver, the Nuggets hosting the Houston Rockets, and you look at the NBA standings. This game is massive. The Rockets right now are 40 and 24. They are the three seed in the West. The Nuggets are 39 and 26, so they're a game and a half worse than the Rockets, and yet they are the six seed in the West, and they only have a game advantage up on the Phoenix Sons. If the Nuggets win tonight, though, they move within a half of a game of the three seed, and right now, the Rockets at three, the Sons at seven, only two and a half games, separate those five teams. Needless to say, it's a big one tonight. The Nuggets are seven point favorites

right now on Bed MGM, so that's a pretty decently sized favorite for the Denver Nuggets. Total is 231 and a half. The head to head this year, the Nuggets are two and one, but every game, just about every game has been close. They haven't played each other going three months. Back at the end of November, the Nuggets beat them 112-109, and then in mid of December, Nuggets beat them an OT, 128-125, and then five days later, the Rockets got their revenge and beat Denver 115-101. In terms of the injury news, not much to tell you about. Dorian Finney Smith is out for Houston and Peyton Watson's out for Denver, but all the big stars are in Kevin DeRan, Alperin, Shengoon, Jamal Murray, Nicola Yokich. The thing about Denver, I like the Nuggets in this game tonight. I think they win this game. If not by double digits, I think they'll cover. I think this is a comfortable win tonight for the Denver Nuggets, because they're as healthy as they've been all season. And I've been saying for the last couple of weeks, this is a Nuggets team that has basically been a 500 squad for the last

I don't know, month or so. But now they're fully healthy. And if you were going to get Denver, you should have gotten them in the last couple of weeks. Because now Aaron Gordon's back. Cam Johnson's healthy. Christian Brown is healthy. And of course, you got Murray and Yokich. This is their normal starting five. And they've only played a handful of games together this season. Aaron Gordon missed months with an injury. Cam Johnson was our Christian Brown was her in the beginning of the season. Yokich had the knee injury that cost him a month. So this is as healthy as they've been all year. And I still think the Denver Nuggets are a dark horse to win the Western Conference. I think it's going to be the Oklahoma City Thunder. But if I had to predict in a Western Conference Finals, if the Nuggets are a three seed or a six seed, I think they'll make a run to the Conference Finals to play the Denver Nuggets. And I think they win this game tonight. Now they haven't been that good at home this year, 17 and 13, which is not normally the case. You go and play in that altitude in Denver. I don't care if you've played there, you know, dozens of times. When you do it, it's different. That error is different, right? They got the five to 5280,

where however many feet of mile is the mile high city. They got to paint it everywhere. It is tough to play there. And it's even tougher in the scenario that the Houston Rockets find themselves in is a back the back. And it's a third game and four nights for Houston. They played the Spurs back on Sunday. And then last night they beat the Raptors at home. So back the back, they got to travel to Denver. And I think this is a desperate spot for the Nuggets. They lost to the neck, they got smoked by the Knicks on Friday. And then they lose at the buzzer in Oklahoma City on Monday. So now you've got the nuggets that have lost two games in a row. They've only lost three games in a row once this season. And it was a stretch where they played the Knicks, the Thunder, and the Pistons. Now the last two games that play the Knicks and the Thunder. And you could argue that the Rockets are just about as good as the Pistons. So this is going to be a big test. But I just think this is a spot where Denver plays probably their A game. And they get the win in this one. So I like the nuggets here are either these teams a threat to win the West. Again, I think Denver is a

dark horse. I don't think the Rockets will win more than one series in the playoffs. And even winning one series would be a big win for this team. They go through stretches, man, where it is so evident. And it is so obvious that they are missing Fred Van Vley terribly. They are missing their point guard. And far too often this year, their offense goes through droughts where they're lacking that point guard. A men Thompson has done a nice job for most of the year doing it. But in the fourth quarter, you look at some of these games. The Rockets have lost their offensive identity goes out the window. It's it's basically just to rant, please hit, you know, 15 mid-range jump shots and save us. Or it's, hey, Shen Goon, you got to be point center. And you got to either do it yourself or you we got to hope that guys double team you. And then somebody's open for three in a reach shepherd has done a real nice job coming off the bench for the Rockets. He's had a couple of big games where you know, they end up closing with him in the lineup over

a men Thompson. If reach shepherd has a night where he's shooting the ball well. But you know, again, this is a starting five where you swap Cam Johnson from Michael Porter. This is a starting five for the Denver Nuggets that won an NBA title. And I think Aaron Gordon, he's looking better and better as he's come back from that long injury layoff. And you know, I think Yokech is going to be a handful tonight. I think that he more than neutralizes Alperen Shen Goon. I mean, Yokech is the best player on the planet. So they have the advantage there. And I mean, look, I just, I think Kevin Durant, who's been playing really damn well since the all-star break. If there was a night where Kevin Durant maybe doesn't have it. Maybe it's, you know, Kevin Durant starts to feel like he's in his late 30s and those legs feel a little tired. It's on a night like tonight. Back to back third game and four nights playing at altitude, playing in Denver. So I like the Nuggets to win this one. I wouldn't be surprised if they win this by 15 points or more. All right, let's get you caught up on the other games going on right now in the NBA. We had a big one in the Eastern Conference tonight between the magic and the calves. There's under six minutes left to go

in the game. And Orlando is going on a big run right now. They've pulled ahead by double digits. The magic lead to Cavalier is one 10 to 99. And in this game, Donovan Mitchell's got 22 points. James Hardin's got 24 points. But for Orlando, Palo Boncaro's got 25, 8 and 7. Floating with a triple double. But at Desmond Bain, they made the big trade for in the off season. And for so much of this season, Desmond Bains played well. But the magic, they have taken a big step back. Remember, they tested the Celtics pretty damn good in the first round of the playoffs last year. The magic were a team that was supposed to be along with the pistons. You know, these young guns that we're going to finish in the top four Orlando with a win tonight, they basically get they're right on the edge of top six in the east. So this is a massive game for the magic if they can finish this thing off. And then, you know, I thought maybe tonight could be easy for my next going assault lake city to play the God awful jazz, who basically are trying to lose games on

purpose. Although, maybe not recently, the jazz have actually played well, not an excuse, though. The nicks were down 15 after the first quarter. They've already pulled it back within single digits. But the chasley, the next 49, 40 with eight minutes left to go in the second quarter. And that's mostly because Utah, here's the, here's the staff for you. The Utah jazz are 11 for 13 from three point range. 11 for 13. So I would, I would hope that as soon as the jazz start missing shots, the nicks will blow them out. All right, we come back with a little hotter cold. I'm Pat Willis is bad. I'm GM tonight. I'm Westwood one sports. This is Westwood one sports. Presenting a gain flings love story.
