The Toronto Maple Leafs were down 5-2 in the third period last night, and Craig Barobi wasn't ready to give up. He pulled his goalie, and guess what happened next? They gave up another goal, and they lose to the New York Rangers. Boy, the Rangers don't be a lot of teams regulation, let alone at home, but they did it last night to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1:01Here's Barobi after the game. Time's the season. Are you frustrated all week? Definitely frustrated. Pest off. The games are right there, and we don't push as a team hard enough to win them. That is Craig Barobi yesterday. Boy, just a reminder, things can go sideways in a hurry. Or they can just happen gradually the way they have with the Leafs. It's not really just one thing. A lot of people point at Marner, and of course, that's a significant development for them. But I'm not sure, Sean, that the Leafs are... I don't let me put it to you this way. I don't think the Leafs are a playoff team with Mitch Marner this season. I think the dysfunction goes a little bit further than that. I think Craig Barobi was a bad hire. Brad Trill living was a bad hire. These guys don't really know what they're doing, and when you've got that, when your GM and Coach don't know what they're doing, that trickles down, man. We'll see what the Leafs get up to today.

2:02They already managed to recoup a first round pick for Nikola Waw, which was surprising to me. Good news if you're a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Bad news is it's Brad Trill living who's still over the same proceedings for that team. And it's a Colorado Avalanche first round pick, right? Again, it comes with protection, but let's be honest, it's a Colorado Avalanche. It'll be 28th or later. And I keep going back to just to finish up on what you had said there, but in the hypothetical that Marner doesn't leave for Vegas and going back to the criticism of the Leafs, their age, that they struggle in so many different areas that if you pin them in or you have a good team defensive structure, the Leafs just don't seem to have the personnel to overcome that or play their way out of that coverage, right? And I think you're right. I don't think that changes with Mitch Marner there this season. So I mean, there's a lot that has to go on. And I think if you're a Maple Leaf fan, I think it's legitimate to question

3:02whether the right people are in place to make those tough decisions. And if you can get through those tough decisions, do you have the right personnel to put forth the new strategy and modernize your club? Here's Stephen Brut yesterday on Melnick in the afternoon. He's talking about Austin Matthews. And where does that story end? Austin Matthews look like he maybe wants to take his toys and go home. Well, let's move on to the Canadians. This is Arpin Basu yesterday on the road with the Canadians appearing on Melnick in the afternoon. I'm sure it's the possibility. I think there's a lot of possibilities here. And I think the Canadians have long been leaning towards hockey trades. And in order to make the hockey trade, you have to,

4:08you're giving up actual NHL players or players who are on the verge or that are NHL ready. If you talk about some of the guys in the lounge, so that's, you know, I think the way to look at how the Canadians operate is generally that they often deal from a position of surplus to try to address a position of need. That's Arpin Basu. So what's that position of surplus right now forwards? But even then, I mean, I think about defense. I do. I think about whether it's Alex Carrier or, you know, to me, this, I keep going back and forth on value, strength, and surplus. Because, yeah, ultimately, you know, you look at the forward group, right? And you can look at the depth of the Canadians and who they have here at the NHL level. We could talk about, you know, a Florian Jack guy. We could talk about an Owen Beck. At a lesser level, I think than those two guys, no disrespect. Josh Wauwawa, who's having a research in the second half of the rocket season,

5:09right? I mean, but I don't, I honestly, I don't think those are the type of players that, whether the Canadians dabble in the rental market or try to, you know, get a substantial type player. Whoever you think that might be up to you. I don't know if that, if that is it to me, if the Canadians are going to make a move, two things need to happen. Patrick Lonnie has to go. And then secondly, they have to be willing to maybe budge a little bit, move off, you know, where they've been locked in for a while. And that is look at a, maybe an asset of significance and decide whether or not now's the time to do that. Overpay. You got overpay. They don't want to overpay. And that, and that's up to you. Whether your own opinion or my opinion or our listeners' opinions about, is there a player on the board today that is maybe worth rolling the dice and saying, you know what? Let's figure it out. And I'll ask you in Simon about this. Like, you know, Nazim Kadry, what's left on his deal? Like, what if he's good? You know, I'll tease it now. Like,

6:10what if you can get, like, he's still a good player. I understand the age and the contract, you know, turns people off. But what if he's good for this year and next year, maybe the year after, something like that? What if you can get two good years out of him? Well, find out what I have to say about that during the three-star quiz in about 20 minutes. One more from Arpen. They need more jam up front and they need more jam on their blue line. And hoping that it comes out of this group when we've reached this point of the season, like just organically, between now and the playoffs, probably isn't very realistic. So if the Canadians want to have some degree of success in the playoffs, I feel like, you know, they probably need to add one or two elements like that, one at each position group. But, you know, their ability to do both is probably pretty, it's probably not realistic. But I wouldn't be the least surprised if between now and tomorrow at 3pm, they will have added a guy like that. Okay. That's Arpen yesterday in California with the Habs. You know, the hard truth of it all is, when you look at the overall Eastern conference standings, there are only two

7:12teams and Connor pointed this out earlier this week. There are only two teams in the conference today that have surrendered more total goals than the Canadians have. They're third from the bottom. The two teams are Florida and Toronto. They are also a bad, short-handed team and have been all season long. I mean, does that change how you think? Is that how management thinks about their approach to today's deadline? You can all, can those things be better? Can you get better by adding a player? It's a tough one. Yeah. But looking at the market, you know, I'm looking at Guillaume-Le-François who wrote yesterday in La Press, so he's like reading Guillaume and his thoughts on what's going on. He writes a lot about the prices that are being paid and the way that second round picks, what does he say here? Second round picks are being liquidated like Nortel stock in 2001. What a reference. Yeah. What a reference. You know, Michael McCarran, second round pick,

8:12and many other examples that he's got here, Nicolas Rois, first round pick, fifth round pick, Keigh for sure would, two second round picks, Nick Dowd, second round pick, third round pick, Michael McCarran, second round pick, Warren Fogel, second round pick, Col Smith, third round pick, Michael Bunting, third round pick, and then there was a couple of other trades here overnight. Did I close it? No, I did not. You know, John Carlson, first round pick, third round pick, Luke Shannon Logan Stanley, go to Buffalo, Buffalo, give up a second round pick, a fourth round pick, Sam Carrick, third round pick, sixth round pick, and Connor Garland, second round pick, third round pick, they are, I mean, teams are giving up these second round picks like it's nobody's business. It's just, and you can't help but just, you tell me if this is a loser proposition or not, but like, let's just talk for a second about what Hughes Gordon and even the Burjman regime have been able to do with second round draft picks. If you're, if you are hot on giving one of these up, and they already did, right, to get Phil to know they gave up a second, the Columbus

This is recent, recent memory, you know, we don't have to go. We're not going back in time here to come up with something that happened 10 years ago. Yeah. And yeah, Oliver Kapanen was a second round pick from the Burjman and Timon's era as well. These are important players on this team that were selected in the second round in recent memory. So if you are sort of thinking, especially with the caveat that

10:17they've already given up a second round pick to get Phil to know, if you are feeling like a second round pick is nothing, like it's just something that you'd give away for, say, six weeks of player X or player Y, something to keep in mind. When you've got management scouts who know what they're doing, that second round pick could end up three, four, five years from now being an impact player on your team. You can't always do business that way, but it's an important thing to keep in mind when you're thinking about a quick fix or a short, a short term answer. Great. Because that's a real part of what's made the Canadians rebuild so successful. You know, where are they today without the contributions, the 19 goals of Oliver Kapanen without the the point of game contributions of Lane Hudson so far this season, you know, I've said this already. If I'm looking at one reason why the Canadians, one reason, if I have to choose one reason why the rebuild is ahead of schedule, Lane Hudson. Absolutely. Lane Hudson. Right away. Right away. And if you sacrifice him for a rental player five years ago, or that pick, I should say,

11:21then maybe Canadians are in a different spot right now. But that's what makes, I think, being a general manager. So tough. It's not an easy job, at least in my opinion. You know, it's striking that balance. And I don't know, do we bring Toronto back into the conversation of can you do both things at the same time? Can you be a contending team while also thinking five years down the line? You know, what these picks add up to you. Keep trading away first round pick. You keep trading away high value picks first second round guys to your point about just using the Canadians as an example, you know, of striking that balance of not just freewheeling it. Yeah, take whatever big you want. You know, give me this older experience player because we believe now it's it's it's quite the balancing act. And obviously hear Montreal as we're well aware of, right? What's your scouting department's batting average? You know, how do they, you know, how do they tend to do? Have they missed in a lot of high value picks? Or have they as Trevor Timons has done and listen, I think it's important to point out, I like that you bring that up. Oliver Kapitans 19 goals. That's a version of a Timon's regime pick, right?

12:26And nice to hear Ken Hughes and Jeff Gordon talk and give him give that staff some credit. Not that long ago when they said listen, this rebuild maybe wouldn't be where it is today. If not for some of the foundation that those guys did when they were here. Sean is here. I am here. It's trade deadline day. Nothing to report yet this morning. Although there were some trades of some significance overnight. We'll talk about the Buffalo Sabers and what they've done here in just a few minutes. First things, first anything, Sean, you want to get off your chest before we move on? No, nothing. I want to get off my chest, but Arpin Basu got some interesting quotes from the coach as he's following team in California. And again, I think Martin St. Louis kind of echoing what Jeff Gordon said at last year's end of season press conference, he kept bringing up the French word for dog, she ain't. And the type of players or the end, what's missing from some of the Canadian style of play. And he just doesn't, you know, he elaborated it on like the dog type player. And in this instance, you know, someone who's intense, someone that is physical, that plays with edge,

13:28and not specific to just being aggressive on the forecheck, but in all areas of the ice, Martin St. Louis has been consistent like he wants. Everyone's got to be a pretty good 200-foot player, right? So he elaborated on that. And then as Arpin writes about when St. Louis paused to consider a question about how involved he gets in management's debates when he said he is somewhere between the two, the the want for more jam on his team had to have been brought up at some point. St. Louis wants to see more of it from his players than he already has, but the limitations of those players in that department are quite clear. And whether those limitations are physical or more based on style of play and player profiles. So St. Louis says some players have it, some don't. There are some players that are available who have that in them, even if some already come off the board in the days leading up to the deadline. So Arpin finishes his piece saying a philosophical debate will need to turn more practical one way or the other because there is little doubt that Canadians management sees what their coach sees

14:31and what anyone watching their team sees. The desire to add a player who brings some jam is surely there. It's a matter of determining the price they are willing or unwilling to pay by three o'clock today. All right. We'll have more on all of this as the show goes on as I'm frequently known to say. 17:39they didn't let Colton Paraco telling them thanks, but no thanks. Get them down. They were busy overnight bringing in a couple of players. They got Sam Carrick from the Rangers and they also brought in Luke Shen and Logan Stanley from the Jets. Now, you know, those guys aren't exactly Colton Paraco, but I wanted to talk about this Paraco thing because this was a bit weird. You know, it was two days ago that we heard the Colton Paraco had been that a trade had been agreed upon pending Paraco's approval. And then it was, I don't recall which insider it was. I think it was LeBron was like, but he will approve the trade. Like that was that was put out. Dude, that was across the you Brian Lawton, former GM agent now broadcaster also said it's just a formality. So there were a lot of credible voices saying the same thing. Look, I don't know if it was the Sabers or the Blues that put this out there into the ether, but it doesn't look good. It doesn't look good for whichever organization it was. And I don't think the Blues are coming out

18:43of any of this looking very good. You think of Robert Thomas, the most prized asset that they've got on that team right now. Yeah. What they've been doing with him for the better part of a week now, publicly dangling them out there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And we've talked about that. I mean, it's just it's a weird thing, right? The scenario was there this year. What if the Canadians had had a bad season this year? And Nick Suzuki's name was just out there. That's he's there. Nick Suzuki. I realize he's not their captain. At least I don't think he is. But you know, he's got a nail on his shirt. He's been there for a long time. It's it's unusual to see a guy treated that way. And this Paraco thing, what a tough spot they put Colton Paraco in. Yeah, that he's on the road. This guy's 32 years old. He's been a lifer with this team. He's 30. He want to Stanley Cup with them. And he's on the road. And he's in a position where his family's back home. And he's being asked to decide whether or not he wants to move to Buffalo for the next four years because that's what how many years he's got left on his contract. It's not a rental. It's not hey, honey, don't worry. I'm going to move to Buffalo for six weeks. Then whatever happens in the

19:44playoffs and then we'll revisit and we'll choose our new home in the off season. It's no, it's your moving to Buffalo. And we can make all the jokes we want about Buffalo, but it's on it's highly unprofessional for an organization, whether it was the blues, the savers, or both of them that that acted to do this to put a respected veteran like Colton Paraco in that position is amateur hour. It is amateur hour. And it's it's it reflects poorly on the organizations. And I'm sure Paraco knows who did it. And I'm sure plenty of other people inside hockey know who did it. Even if I don't know exactly who it is, it's just not a good look for other of those teams. And you talk about all the stuff that we've talked about the Canadians during the rebuild building up Goodwill, turning a team into a destination, putting families first, making guys feel like this is their home that this is a place they want to be in, whether it's the organization or the market, whatever the blues are doing here, whatever the sabers are doing here, it's it's the opposite of that. And to visit this, the trades that the sabers made overnight, Luke Shen Logan Stanley,

20:47Sam Carrick, these feel like the kind of moves Mark Burjave was making when he was tinkering with the Canadians, the infamous trade deadline where they brought in Steve Aughts and Andreas Martinson and Dwight King. Yeah. This it feels kind of like that big guys who really aren't that good and these in this case, I mean, they're all veteran guys. They've been around for a long, long time, but these are not needle movers by any stretch of the imagination. I just I what the sabers have been doing and what the blues have been doing, it's two different things, but in both cases, organizations that have been very active, very early that appear to be, I don't know if panic is the right word, but it just the blues are in uncharted waters like they haven't been bottoming out like they are in dug up during Doug Armstrong's tenure, really. And the sabers haven't been in a playoff spot for 15 years at this time of the year. And both in both cases, it feels like they are just like so unfamiliar that they are acting as if they have

21:49no experience in this department because I guess they have no experience in this department. Doug Armstrong's got the thing that he's a dead man walking as a general manager. There's another weird component to this whole thing, but I just look at some of these teams and I just I can't help it feel like they've got guys running the show that don't really know what they're doing. It's I mean, I think you know, you touch on a lot of key points and I can't help but have, you know, the same kind of read on that one particular point about how this reflects on the organization and how attractive you're going to be for players that want to sign there because of the uncertainty. And even remember, you didn't mention his name there in your take on the blues and kind of what's happened in the last two days, if not longer. Jordan Cairo was heavily involved in in trade talk. I don't know late summer and obviously Robert Thomas has kind of taken over and then it was Colton Paraco this week, but it's been consistent. I mean, these guys decided to sign their long term. I would assume because they believe in the foundation that's been built there and what they're

22:52trying to do and then what it goes sideways. We're given no movement clauses. 100%. Now it's like get dangled, dangled, dangled, dangled. And then turn them into like villains in, you know, like, Colton Paraco's going to get booed and buffalo like I realized that the only needs to worry about that once a season, but still it's just it's not a good spot to put a veteran player in and then there's the potential for animosity from the home, the home fan base for like, well, you know, why didn't you put the team first? You know, we're trying to rebuild here. So there's also the potential for that negativity as well. No, down like players are like, you know, not everybody's a field player, but I bet you there are a lot of field players in this league that if you make them feel special, that they belong and they have a key role in the success of the organization, I think it, it, it translates to success on the ice. I think it would be totally normal for Robert Thomas at 26 years of age to kind of, I mean, have a some sort of quiet sour attitude. Like, this is what you think of me. I'm a 26 year old borderline franchise player for you and you've

23:56been dangling, dangling me in the wind. And my name has been through and through and all these trade talks. I don't know if I want to play with you. Please trade me this summer. You know, if it doesn't happen before three, I think it's a total normal reaction to have as a young player in this league. You don't want me fine. I don't want to be here. That's all good. But especially if you have a no movement clause. Yes. Not only can you do that, you can handcuff the team by saying, I will only go to team X. Yeah. And why not put the boots to them? Exactly. Yeah. Why, if they're going to treat you like this, why should you have any modicum of respect for them? So anyway, something to keep an eye on. I don't know, man. It feels like a weird time to me in the NHL on a number of different levels. It's the smart teams and the dumb teams seem to be getting separated a little bit. And then there's this, this, this, this talent drain out of Canada, that I could be happening in the next six to 12 months that I'm a little bit worried about. Anyway, we'll be back in a few moments. Do you want to see the Habs do something? Does it make sense for them to move where they are in the standings? Columbus making moves? The sends made a move. Buffalo added. We haven't heard much from Boston. There's the other team there in Wild Card 2 today. Barely hanging on. What about that? I mean, there's no sense of desperation, right? Like the Canadians don't need to dip into the rental market for the sake of making a move because they believe the spirit of the team or the competitive spirit of the team is a bit down. I say no. Yeah. And I'd be surprised if they do one of these overpays. I mean, it's hard not to look at any of the trades that we've seen so far and think overpay. And I don't think the Canadians

29:14are in a spot, especially given the names that are out there that they really need to be doing that. They're doing great. They're drafting good players every year. They're doing a good job developing these players. It seems here as well. There's a lot of positivity. There's a lot of good things happening. They could easily find themselves back in a top three spot by the end of this weekend. If things kind of break their way with the guys that they've got here. And are they one of these rental players away from going to the next level? I'm not sure that I believe that. So I do. I'm comfortable with a lack of activity from the Canadians in the next, what do we got left here? Five hours, a bad at math, five and three, eight hours? Well, six and a half, eight and a half, I guess, maybe four and three, seven hours and nineteen minutes. Simon, what about that? How are you feeling? I'm doing good. Thanks for asking. Oh, I think if there's a move to be made something, like, forget the major move that Trochec or Thomas or stuff like that. But I do believe

30:19that there is a need back there on the blue line. If you can find, I don't know, this year's version of Edmonds in or, you know, when you got Ben Sharat back in it, like, I think you need a little bit more sample paper on the back end. I think you can find the number five, number six defensive who could also help your penalty killing. Like, if I see something like that get moved to Boston or Buffalo or to wherever for, like, uh, third and then something else, I'd be like, you know, yeah, that that that could have been done here. I think there's a void there on that bottom pairing, a little bit more physicality on the blue line and to help that penalty killing. So I'm moving like that. I'd like to see done. But is there an argument to be made that the Canadians should try at a significant level to try to get this guy if you believe that he can help you this year and next year, would that alone be worth paying the price to get him out of Calgary? So, you know, this is the thing. Uh, I was all over that last year and I was a 35-go season and I thought that, you know, he's a dog. He's a playoff performer. He's exactly what you need behind Nick Suzuki. You live in a world where it's Suzuki, Ky-3, and I guess it would be Kaplanan or Dino and Evans. Well, that's a pretty good center position.

32:21The last year I was willing to overpay Sean and how can he not overpay the guy's score? And I think 35 goals last year, which is, I think, only gold costumes might have had more goals on the Canadians, but the drop-offs has been pretty sharp, man. So, uh, you know, what I thought, the drop-off would happen in a year or two and you can live with it because at that point, you, you know, you, you know, Demi Dawgs a little bit older, Slavskier, young players are a little bit older. They can start carrying that offensive load, but, no. Unfortunately, no. I was on it for a year, but the drop-off is just too much for me. I'm going to have to pass. Now, if you tell me it's, you know, no disrespect, I hope he's not listening. Like, it's doable in a second. I'm willing to have that discussion, but I'm not willing to part ways with decent assets right now. It just feels like a consolation prize, ultimately. The Canadians is exactly what we were just talking about. They're not in a position where they need to be doing something desperate. This would wreak of desperation and then you just have to deal with the fallout of having a declining return on a currently 35 soon to be 36-year-old player who is just not as good as he once was. If you give me Nazim Kadri from five years ago, I'm all over that. But this is just not the situation. It doesn't seem like a smart move to me

You've got to be thinking about when Brendan Gallagher and Josh Anderson and Alex on carry are coming off the books that you're going to have this $7 million anchor kind of tying you down for a guy that is not going to be playing in your top six. And I realize the cap is going up, but you just got to be careful with stuff like this. If you want to be a competitive team, especially one that's in this country in Canada that maybe is going to have to sometimes overpay in the future to bring in the kind of guys that they're hoping to bring in to solidify this thing and to get them to the next level. You can't afford to be having diminishing returns on a guy like Nazim Kadri who is just his Darren Dragher said it. He's not getting better. Let's have clear eyes here. I'm just wondering if you guys know any, try to think if they move off on Kyler Murray, did they go to Arizona?
