Has to be because tomorrow's Wednesday is the start of... It's just the official start of free agency. My, I don't know if you're like me, but my, like, my days, my calendar, anything I think of, I kind of always compartmentalize it with sports. That's how I figure out what day it is sometimes. Like, wait, what day is today? Oh yeah, this is happening with the bills. Or this is happening with the Sabers, so it's gotta be that day. Like, I don't know at top of mine. I have to think about the calendar in a sports term. That's how I do it. I don't know about you.
Dan's over there. That's okay, he's working the screens, the phones. We're gonna open up the phones. First half hour today. 803-0550, because we got a lot to talk about here on the start of NFL Free Agency yesterday and continuing it through it today. And I say start of free agency. We know that the actual free agency start date isn't until tomorrow at 4 p.m. Wednesday. That's how I know today's Tuesday, because tomorrow is the start of free agency at 4 p.m. The talking period, legal tampering period, negotiating period, whatever we want to call it. You could call it whatever you want, folks. I don't care. This is kind of one of those things. If you want to call it the open championship or the British open, I don't know. But it doesn't really matter. We all know what we mean, right? We don't have to get that deep into the semantics and the actual wording. That is still going on today. What will today hold for the Buffalo Bills? Anything? What are they getting in new cornerback D-Alford? Well, we're going to find out about that today because I have a special guest coming up at 11 a.m. from our Odyssey sister station 92.9,
the game in Atlanta. Chris Thomas is going to join me. He's a host on that station in Atlanta. He's going to join me at 11 a.m. not only to talk about D-Alford and what the bills are getting in him, their newest corner. Also to talk about their signing, the Falcons that is, of Toa, Tongue of Ioloa. And now, I guess competing or being a part of it, they got to have some sort of competition there, right? We'll find out about that in Atlanta and what's happening. What else will happen with the bills today? I mean, I would not be surprised if something does happen today while we're on the air. I mean, if we go two hours and nothing happens with the bills, that could very well happen too. Nothing really of significance. You know, yesterday after, I guess, I shouldn't say nothing of significance. We haven't had like a big, big move. The bills have actually lost some players. They did signed D-Alford. They did sign Kyle Allen. But if something does happen in the NFL, I want you to know we are on top of it. Because Dan Dale has the sounder.
Dan, you got that? We're going to play the sounder for everybody to know what they'll be listening for. You got that ready so we can play it so everybody knows? Here we go. Maybe not. All right. It's the buildup that gets me. It's there. I just don't hear it until it starts going. Okay, listen, this is you. That's fine. You guys, wherever, where did you find that sounder? Who shows that sounder, by the way? Was that you or somebody else? Me and Tim Graham had a discussion one day and he's like, hey, you know what the angel trade deadline coming up? We kind of need a breaking new sounder. Right? Yes, yes. I'm like, I need this. Okay, okay. Listen, this is no shot at you whatsoever because everybody's different. Like to me, like I said, yes, it sounds like I'm watching a movie in a theater. Okay? Like when I was growing up, you were watching. So the world is different for you, Dan, than it was for me growing up. Right? Now we have everything in our fingertips on social media. Like when there's news, you find it out on acts,
you find it out on Facebook, whatever fake news on Facebook too, or everywhere else. But you find it out and you see it. When I was growing up, if you were watching television, this still does happen in some capacity, of course. But like when I was growing up, when there was breaking news, it was bam, right on top of you. You know what I mean? Like bam, breaking news. They just like broke in. They gave it this noise. And like, you found this sounder that sounds like I'm watching an orchestra and I'm sitting near the pit and I'm like, oh, they don't well. You know what? Look at that. The tambourine guy is really good, you know what I mean? So again, I'm not trying to make fun of you. I'm just telling you that when you hit that, it's like, it's the buildup that gets me. So I guess that if that works for you, I'll keep it. I'm fine with it. If that works for you, Dan Dale. Hey, I sound. If you want something different, I can always go find something different. I don't mind at all. I kind of feel it has that orchestra feel of just like. It does. Like, but that's the, yes, it's the orchestra buildup. Like I said, yes, they like a Steven Spielberg film. Like they finally just crushed the aliens and sent them back to planet wherever they came from.
Right? Yeah, there we go. All right, that's okay though. No big deal. Let's keep that. We'll keep the new sounder. But let me know and let the fans know and let the listeners know when something's going on by playing that new sounder. If we have breaking news in the NFL and any capacity, but of course more than anything for the Buffalo Bills, right? So we'll do that. Okay, what else going on today? Paul Hamilton's going to join me at 1030. Sabers have another big game tonight. And look at, I'm going to use Paul like every day I can right now because we need to because the Sabers are playing every other night, literally like every other night right now. I think and they have a game tonight. They begin Thursday. They begin Saturday. So like every other night and every game is big at this point, they're fighting not only folks for obviously a playoff spot where there are 10 points clear basically of the playoffs. Let me look at the standings this morning to make sure. I think they're 10 points clear of somebody who could catch them. Yeah, so you have to go to the first team out,
which would be Columbus. Columbus at 74 points with a game in hand on the Sabers. Sabers with 84. I mean, we're less than 20 games left for the Sabers 18. They're 10 points clear of a playoff spot. I mean, I've said this before, they got to do it. I think today might be the day. Maybe tomorrow if they win tonight, but today might be the day that I'm not worried about the jinx stuff anymore. I'm just going to say pick the date. Like we got to have a playoff pool date. What, what, when are the Sabers clenching? They have to know it's it's going to happen. It's got to happen. It's ridiculous if it doesn't. It would be the all in all time collapse. Okay, but not only are they obviously fighting for a playoff spot, and they're going to get there. Not only folks, are they fighting for the division? Can I dare say? I mean, Dan, can we talk about the number one seed in the conference? Are we allowed to even discuss that at this point? There are two points away from catching Carolina for the top spot in the conference, although Carolina has a game in hand. This is what the case was with Tampa.
There were what six points back, maybe a Tampa, four points, Tampa with games in hand, what they still do. The Sabers literally do have a look at the top seed in the top seed in the conference. It's unbelievable. It's so weird just thinking about yours passing. You're just like, okay, 10 points out of the wild card race. Here we go again. Let's see if they can do it. It's such a different feeling of going, oh, they can, they can be the top of the East. They can do that. That happens in the NHL. Like that's a possibility. I didn't think. Just to be where they are, it seems like it was never possible, right? But folks, I mean, every single game now, every point they can collect, and you keep stacking these wins and look at their schedule. I mean, they have winnable games coming up. Starts tonight. But I'll tell you this tonight, like we're going to be there tonight. My son's hockey team is actually going to be there tonight. It's one of those things where the youth hockey teams come in and his hockey team. They have a block of tickets. It's going to be great. So I'll be there with them tonight. I'm actually going to join Brian Coseal during intermission tonight. To talk about some of the bills moves, talk about the saber.
So I'll be a little bit on the broadcast tonight during one of the intermissions. So we're going to be there tonight. But look at the, look at the schedule coming up. You have San Jose. And if you're going tonight, I mean, you get a treat to see Maclin Celebrini. He is, he is a fantastic, fun young player to watch. He really is. Kid makes the Olympic team, right? Canadian Olympic team. It was a big part of what they did. Super young, super talented. Maclin Celebrini, a return of the GM, of course, Mike Greer. You know, he's a big part of what happened in through those O506 teams and back in the mid 2000s. But Maclin Celebrini is a fantastic player. But the sabers need to win this game. And this is a team that they should be able to beat. But it's a team fighting for a playoff spot in San Jose. They're going to get their best shot. And of course tonight, after that emotional game on Sunday, that's the challenge. Yeah, you can win. I love what Bulldog said about this yesterday. Bulldog was talking about this yesterday and the letdown.
And he said, maybe the letdown was actually the game before Tampa. You're playing Nashville. You're down one nothing. It's kind of a very low event game. And then all of a sudden, bam, bam, you get a couple of pucks behind and into the net. And now you're winning two to one. You actually wind up winning that one three to two. You hold on, right? They really, you know, kind of just had a, like I said, low event hold on type of game. That they knew they had Tampa come in the next night. On back to back for Bull teams. They knew what had happened in Tampa a couple of weeks before. You knew it would be a physical game. Maybe that was the letdown. You want, but if you want to be a serious contender and player, you got to respond tonight with energy and not have what happened on Sunday impact you physically or mentally. That's not easy to do. This is also why Yarmul Kekalainen made trades for depth to have guys in case something. Again, I'm not suggesting anybody's not available tonight necessarily, but you have guys you can put in the lineup. If you have to start, I don't want to say load managing,
but understanding the grind of the schedule, especially when it comes to the playoffs. He mentioned this in his media availability and he's right. So tonight's a night like that. You, you need to beat San Jose tonight and show that you can respond to what happened in that game on Sunday right back with, hey, we can play at this level and there's no letdown here. That's on your leadership. That's on understanding that this isn't just a one game. Yeah, we took care of business with Tampa. You're on your way now and if you want to be considered serious, which they already are, that's another step. Then they get Washington, the capitals on Thursday. I mean, usually a bit of a tough out, right? They're talented, but another team you should be able to handle. And then you have the lowly, can I say, right now Toronto Maple Leafs. I mean, the Leafs are not a good team. They're coming to Buffalo on Saturday. We talked about this yesterday with Owen a little bit when I asked, do you think that Sabers fans? I mean, Leafs fans could literally be selling their tickets to Sabers fans.
The Leafs fans at bottom from Sabers fans earlier. Then it's a West Coast trip and the Sabers will be gone because the NCAA tournament's coming to town in a week. Today is the start of a lot of the big conference tournaments, including my Syracuse Orange, who are having a very tough year. I'm very, very upset about their year. They should have been better. They're going to fire their coach Red Octree. Today they play like what, four, four, 30, I think gets SMU. In the first, first early preliminary, you stink round of the ACC tournament. I say that because they should not be playing in this like super preliminary bottom of the bottom of the conference round in the ACC tournament. But that's where we are with Syracuse basketball. So I'll pay attention to that later as I head down to the arena as well. That'll be going on and that's all happening this week. But that's why the Sabers are off next week in Out West. Because the arena is going to be used for NCAA basketball. We'll have a lot more on that. And by the way, special announcement. This show going on the road next week. I'll have more on that. I'll have more on that. Taken it on the road.
The day that the tournament is in Buffalo Thursday, March 19th. Chance for you to stop by, see me as you head to the arena or just say hello. Whatever we're going to talk basketball, we're going to talk hockey, going to talk bills, going to talk free agency. The bills have Conor McGovern meeting with the media today. We are going to effort to bring that to you live at 1130. As long as everything goes well, we'll try on that. Conor McGovern meeting with the local media today at 1130 AM. We'll bring that to you. So yeah, you got Sabers tonight. You got the bills. You got free agency and anything that happened at any time. Like we said, in free agency for the Buffalo bills. But if you take a look at kind of what has happened so far, let's just kind of go through what happened so far today. I mean, so far over the last 24 hours essentially, okay. The, let me just pull this up because I had it. I just want to make sure, okay, bills traded. Obviously, we know for DJ more.
They signed Conorback D Alfred of the Atlanta Falcons. I've been asked a lot what does D Alfred bring? D Alfred is essentially your replacement for Terran Johnson. However, that said, he's a different player than Terran Johnson. And he's not going to be on the field as much as Terran Johnson. And I think you have to understand and put into context the kind of not only player they're getting, but roll, what role he is going to fill. I'm going to learn more about this from Chris Thomas at 11 a.m. From my seat, my perspective, knowing what I know about D Alfred is, this is a young man who has, it is more versatile. He's more versatile than Terran Johnson. That doesn't mean he's quite the football player. Terran Johnson, the former All Pro. They're losing a really good player in Terran Johnson. Who, yes, age and injury started to catch up with him a little bit last year because he's on the field so much because he played what Brandon Bean said 90% of the snaps essentially at nickel.
They're bringing a player a little more versatile. Can play outside, can play safety as well, but he's not going to be on the field as much. So that's why, according to initial reports that are coming out, his cap hit is less than $4 million this year. It increases as the years go on, but they're not paying him as much because he's not going to have as much of a role as Terran Johnson. But you'll have a guy that you can bring in who can play all different spots. He kind of reminds me a little bit of a Cam Lewis like that. But Cam Lewis has been in this league eight years now, right? And this guy, what D Alfred for four years. So that's what they're getting in D Alfred. And that's why the bills went out and did this, which is, hey, we'll move out from Terran Johnson. He played this role for a long time. It's making a lot of money. We could save a little money. Great player for us, but he's not going to be in the same role. He goes and gets traded eventually to the Raiders, who by the way are spending a boatload of money. This offseason, they're going to do that. And they're going to draft number one overall. Mendoza. We'll see how that works out there in the tough division. Raiders are still the last place team in the division right now.
I mean, they spent a bunch of money, including Tyler Linderbaum. They trade for Terran Johnson. They've done other things, but they're going to have a rookie quarterback in the division with Patrick Mahomes and the chiefs and the Broncos and Bonex. We'll see where that goes. But and of course, you know, Justin Herbert and the Chargers, but they're in a tough division. They're still last place. The bills do go to Vegas next year, by the way. But they also traded away Max Crosby. I saw something today on the Ravens. How the Ravens have lost a ton of really, like, not a ton, but they've lost some really good players, but they added Max Crosby. So sometimes the name is a quality or quantity, right? Sometimes quality, meaning top end quality versus more middle and, you know, bottom end of the depth chart and how you want to look at it. And I think that's where the bills are right now. So to get back to the bills, what we're talking about here is so the bills have this one signing really. I mean, you could say yes, they made another one. It was Kyle Allen. Kyle Allen comes in as a backup to Josh Allen. He was here in 2023, saw action in seven games, never even through a pass.
Just kneel down basically. The bills lose Mitch Trubisky to the Titans to Brian Dable. No total surprise there to go back to Brian Dable. But what happens here is now, it appears as though the bills have kind of let the dust settle a little bit. And you don't have to love that. You can feel they should have gone over the top of San Francisco and offered Mike Evans more money. I don't know where Mike Evans camp was on that. What they would have done, even if you did say, let's give you, you know, instead of what are they, what is he making now? It's less than 20 mil. I think it was first report is 20 mil. But either way, you don't know how that could have gone. Maybe maybe you thought they should have given more for a certain other player. That's fine. But it feels like they've let the initial big money go here. And now they're going to see where they can fill in as the money starts to drop. We're already seeing that apparently, with a player like Trey Hendrixson. The reports are today, the Trey Hendrixson was seeking 30 million dollars a year.
But no team was meeting his asking price. So today, it appears that Trey Hendrixson and his camp are maybe lowering that a little bit. We'll see where it lands. Does that mean the bills move on it? That's going to be an interesting one. I've said all along here, going back a couple of months that ever since Jim Leonard's defense, Jim Leonard was hired and they made some personnel changes. We saw on defense that we know that guys are going to be gone or whatever. I think it's fascinating. And I've been saying this for a couple of months that for the last nine years, we knew what the bills defensive would look like. We know what they'd look like. You could go to a whiteboard, go on whatever you do these days and plug in the X's and O's and
put the O's, the circles for the defensive players and line them up. Bam, bam, bam. This is Sean McDermott's defense. Bam, bam, bam. All you had to then do was figure out who's playing where? Here's Rousseau, here's Bosa, here's at Oliver, here's Bernard and Milano and Benford and Bishop. Okay, you could do that. This year, it's totally flipped. This year, it's totally different. And I think that's fascinating. This year, it's, okay, let me get you get the roster. Look at the names. Who are they acquiring? Oh, they got that guy. Okay, you know what, D'Alfred? Okay, he played inside, outside. But he's not a full-time nickel. So what do we do there? Where do you put, do you have the circle for the nickel? No, no, no, you put another linebacker there, right? Oh, wait, at Oliver, he restructured his deals. So he's sticking around, he's sticking around, no doubt. He's not a real nose tackle. We got to move him, but does he go to the end? Like, that's what it is for me. That's, I think it's super fascinating. To go through this exercise with the Bill's defense. So all that being said, what happens today? Do they make a play for a Trey Hendrickson? Do they still go out and try and sign a pass rusher? I do think Trey Hendrickson could help any team.
And I wouldn't be surprised at the Bill's and every other team in this league is in on Trey Hendrickson. Why? Because he's really, really good and who wouldn't? But I also don't know if the Bill's want to spend top of the market dollar on, you know, other pass rushers. I got like Trey Hendrickson a little different. Max Crosby might be different. There was rumors there in on him. Because I think that Jim Leonard scheme could take care of some of the pass rush issues the team has had. It doesn't have to be just get the player. Yes, the players can help. You need the players. But the scheme could also kind of mitigate some of that and make it better as it is with the guys you already have. And other guys you fill in on the more of the second tier, you know, bottom-depth part of the roster rotation players who could be a little bit better. I mean, Brandon means out here at the combine talking about you've on Solomon, unprompted gets my, that gets my eyebrows raised. Like, what does that look like? Do they have plans for him to be more of an edge rusher in a 3-4? He said they thought he was more of a 3-4 when he came out of college. So yeah, I think about that. And today's the day for that. Leo Chanel is still out there, linebacker.
The guy I've always thought would fit. Played for Jim Leonard, it was constant. Maybe a wait for them to come out and down on him, whatever it is. He's feeling out his market. He's not getting what he wants. I think that could wind up working. He's been a part-time player for the most part for Kansas City. But I think he fits very well in the scheme. Jim Leonard knows how to use him. That would be somebody I would think that would be on the bill's radar. How about a PJ Locke, a veteran safety from Denver who played for Jim Leonard there? Is that a guy that they might want to target? Kevin Byard had a great, great year. It last year. And that's a guy that, you know, could you pair him a cold bishop, a veteran safety with a young safety. DJ Reader is out there, nose tackle. A guy I've looked for years. I have not been all pining and banging the tail for DJ Reader this year like I haven't years passed. But this might be there to do it because of the defense and it fits better. And then Jeremy brought him up and I'm like, oh, here you go. You got me on the DJ Reader hive again inside of it. Because I've always loved that guy and thought he would fit. So yeah, there's a lot to still be determined what they are going to do. And we'll see where it goes today.
And we're taking your phone calls. Getting connected with our fans is brought to you by Northtown Kia. Western New York's number one Kia dealer shop online at Northtown Kia. Dot com. Let's get to John and cheek to Waga. Hi, John. You're on WGR morning sale. Yeah, I got a trivia question for you. And let me say in advance, I think you'll probably get it. There was a full back who played six years with the pets. The opposite of Reggie Gilliam. And then signed as a free agent with the bills played two years here. Can you name him? Well, it wasn't Larry Seniors. He came from Arizona. But I'm thinking of, um, oh my gosh, oh my gosh. He had the same name as another last same last name as another guy who had it like it was a good player in the league, right? And this was maybe mid to mid 2000s into 2010s, right? Maybe around there. Well, yeah, I got it in front of me here. Who is it? 90, 98 and 99. He was made the pro bowl twice with the bills. Yes, I know. Wait, not Sam Gash.
It is. Yes. Sam Gash was a patriot. Okay, Sam Gash was a patriot. So I'm thinking to someone else, but yeah. So when you said that, I'm like pro bowl. Sam Gash, no doubt. You're right about it. I'm looking at it now. Came to the bills in 98, 99. He was a big blocker. As you know, though, John, like the game has changed a lot. Since Sam Gash was, you know, gashing people upon intended. He also actually, he did actually run the ball a little bit and catch the ball a little bit. And not actually ran. Sam Gash, I'm looking at as in Buffalo. Did you realize Sam Gash caught 20 passes in 1990? He caught 19 and 98, you know that. Well, he actually had more catches than rushes in his career. He did, you're right. I'm looking at that now, because he was more of a blocking guy. He also had the neck roll. Didn't Sam Gash wear a neck roll? Yeah, he had 13 receiving touchdowns and just two touchdowns in his career. I mean, he was just, he made the pro bowl without, let's see, how many catches did he have that one year? I don't think he had. In the years he made the pro bowl,
he made the pro bowl, he is a Buffalo bill, the year 19 and 20 respectively, in those pro bowl years, I believe. Yeah, yeah, he only had a few catches. Yeah, I mean, like, in listen, the role has changed. I respect the hell out of Reggie Gillian, what he's been able to do. And I've said more than anybody, football's cyclical, right? We're going back to a bigger offense. We're going back to more of a pounded offense and response to defenses, getting lighter. And Reggie Gillian has been a Buffalo bill. And I wish Reggie Gillian luck just not too much luck. You know what I mean, John? Yeah. Yeah, he made the pro bowl, he didn't run the ball once. I know. There you go, man. It's amazing. Thanks, John. I appreciate your call. Thomas and Buffalo is next up on the North Town automotive extra point show. Morning, pal. Morning. I wanted to talk about the DJ Moore trade and a couple of other things. So first off, the DJ Moore trade. I like it, don't get me wrong. But it feels like ever since being got here, there's this habit of taking former Panthers player. And DJ Moore is good.
Don't get me wrong. As I said before. But with the other options out there, like you said, Mike, Ed is playing Thomas Jr. Romeo, Doc, that we've been making an attempt to go after these guys. And then that's not because they played. I mean, it isn't a way. I mean, but Thomas, let me tell you, this is how the league works. It's not just a brand and bean thing. You go and get players you're familiar with. You know, he played for Joe Brady and had a great year in 2020, or you know, one of his better years in 2020. This isn't brand and bean. Oh, I need Panthers. It's it's I'm sure the way it went down is Joe Brady's like, Hey, this is a guy that's I've had success with. I know how to use him. And that's where that goes. This is not unique to the bills. This happens everywhere. Look at the giants. Joe Shane just brought in Tremaine Edmonds. Why? He was in Buffalo when they drafted Tremaine Edmonds. He knows them. Look at Brian Dable. He signs a Giants tight end. He played. This is not unique. Okay, I'll get I'll get you. But the other thing is now that we try to for more. Does it look like we're going to go defensive heavy in the draft
because I at the very least I still want us to take a receiver in the draft? Well, I think that depends on what happens over the next few days and month because time is as you know, they could go sign another player or they could sign a bunch of defensive players and then we'll lean that way. So I couldn't give you that answer right now until I see what else happens. But I think people get way too hung up Thomas on. Guys who played for oh my god, the Panthers. Yeah, there's a connection there. Brandon Bean actually did believe it or not. He didn't draft them. Brandon Bean has no connection to DJ Moore and Carolina, by the way. DJ Moore was in Josh Allen's draft class in Buffalo in 2018. Brandon Bean was already here. The connection is Joe Brady, but that happens everywhere. Like I don't know why people make such a big deal out of it. Look around the league, folks. Look around the league. Coaches, GMs, they bring in players they're attached to because they know them. The onboarding process is easier. They know their character. They know how they fit in the room. You know, I mean, I get it. When when Brandon Bean and Sean McDermott were here, it was Carolina pipe line left and right. They also were here for a long time.
So you're going to get more of those over time. But that's the same thing. I mean, remember when the bills released, I say Hodgents, where'd he go? Went to the Giants. Why? Because those people running the Giants knew him. This is just what happens in the league all the time. Wherever Sean McDermott winds up coaching next year and I think he will, you'll probably see some former bills land on his roster because he's going to know those guys he's going to want to bring him in 803 05 50. Thanks for the phone call. Big Sabers game tonight. I think we can say that every single time they step on the ice now, Paul Hamilton joins me to talk about it up next on the North Town Automotive Extra Point show on WGR. With a voice of the Rochester fan is heard. This is WGR Rochester. Select WGR. You can even share your rewind moments with friends. Brought to you by Arthur Pressman, your DWI and Traffic Attorney. It's Paul Hamilton. That's what they called me, a college. He has the facts to back up. He's opinions. People ask me, well, how are the Sabers going? Are they going to win tonight? Oh, cool. Not WGR. Sports Radio 550. All right, our Paul Hamilton joins me right now. The Sabers will be on the ice in a little while, locker room, at least. Another practicing today, getting a skate in before they take on the San Jose. Are they on the ice right now? Actually Paul, I hear that. They are. Yes, they just started two minutes ago. Can you tell us who's in gold tonight? I'm guessing Lion. Lion, yeah, I can't tell you if the new guys are down there up too high. And they don't have numbers on their sweaters. So I'm not sure if any of them are out there,
but I do know that is Lion in gold. Did you hear Betia Samuelson with Jeremy and Joe this morning? Her most of it, yes. He said, when Jeremy asked him about Logan Stanley, watching the game for the press box, he made a comment of, yeah, I'm pretty sure he circled the next lightning game on his calendar. I mean, I got me juiced up. I'll tell you that. There was no question in my mind about that, because we spoke with at the end of the first period. And he, you know, by the way, those three are not out there. So they're still waiting their visas. But yeah, he was chomping at the bed. He was impressed with his new teammates. I mean, he knows they're not the biggest thing in the world. And they're not great fighters or anything like that. But he really enjoyed the pack mentality. And I think he would have enjoyed coming over the glass and joining in on that. And as I told Brian that night, I said, I will guarantee you, he's taking names right now. And he on Dingestay, when the Tampa Bay lightning shows up show up, I will guarantee you that Brendan Hagle
will not act like he did two days ago. That is thing. Is it April 6th's Dingestay? Is that what that is? Yep. And realize that. I think it's also the night of the NCAA championship game that night. So a lot going on. Yeah, I think it is. It's always the first Monday of April. Paul Hamilton here on the Western hotline. Sabre Sharks tonight. Okay, so Paul, you know, this is the kind of game where, yeah, you took care of business over the weekend. You had a low event game against Nashville. You have a high event game, super high event game against Tampa. You win them both. Now you got a shark's team coming to town two days later. This fighting for a playoff spot. Have it's a fantastic young player and McLean Celebrini. What's the challenge tonight to make sure that you stay on top of your game? The challenge is you were just so hyped up after that game the other night. And you heard Matthias Samuelson, they were hyped up. He had said in the locker room and they were, you know, being in there, getting interviews and that type of thing. And they definitely were hyped up. And so, you know, they didn't practice yesterday.
I think it was there. I don't think they practiced anyway because it's three and four. But I think that was their NHL day off yesterday. But they have to, you know, all right, you're into first place. You beat the first place team to pass them. It was a big game. Your fans went out of their minds. It was, it was just a great night. But now you have to get yourself refocused and ready to play one of the best young players in the National Hockey League in the San Jose Sharks. Paul Hamilton, sabers tonight against the Sharks 7 p.m. pregame at six here on WGR. How did the sabers come out of that game? I think we talked about this a little bit yesterday, but you're saying right now the three guys are still not available because they're visa issues. Could that happen today though, Paul? What, what, I mean, I know this is very much probably over both of our heads and the complications of the government and how this works. Is it possible they could have that resolve before the game tonight and still play? Yeah, I'd say anything's possible, sure. I mean, and I asked Stanley about and he had no idea and he's living it. So they didn't give him any idea
when it might be taken care of. And you're coming out of a weekend so they're not going to take care of it on Saturday or Sunday. So basically you're, as you wake up on Monday, you're right, you were right where you were when business hours closed on Friday. So now we'll see, now that business hours have been going for an hour and a half. We'll see how the wheels of government red tape work. And if they work today or if they don't or, or wait a minute, say something Monday. Oh, that's, I'm an idiot. I was thinking Monday, it's all good. Anyway, the wheels have not turned yet, but yeah, so yeah, sure, that could happen this morning, this afternoon. You just never know when it might happen. I don't know. I mean, I have not paid attention to something like this enough to know. Does this happen in basketball? If you go to Toronto or come from Toronto, the Raptors trade you it. Does it happen in baseball? The Blue Jays? I have no idea. If the same issue happens in these other sports. I don't pay any attention to basketball. So I can't tell you about the Raptors.
So as far as the Blue Jays go, that would be a good question for Pat Molacaro, you know, if that happens. I'm not aware that it does, but that doesn't mean it's not happening. Again, you know, with hockey, it happens all the time, but I don't know. Paul, one guy I didn't ask you about the other day is Tanner Pearson. We talked about the other guys, the Sabers added. What does Tanner Pearson bring to the Buffalo Sabers? Size. A Stanley Cup winner with the Los Angeles Kings. I think he was a rookie yeary one, not mistaken, with the Kings. And so it's a guy that's been through it and has, you know, won a cup. He's a big man who can get in on the forecheck. Again, a depth piece right now. Maybe he gets in the lineup. Maybe not. Same thing with Shen, you know, because I think what happens when those two defensemen are ready is Metza goes back down, becomes the captain of the Rochester Americans again.
And then I would think Stanley goes into the lineup with Kessel Ring and then Shen becomes your number seven guy. No, it's interesting. You say that your number seven guy. This is this like these games. I know these guys might not be available to play yet. It's exactly underscoring what Yarmou talked about when he had media availability. You look at the schedule. They're playing every other night. What happens when you get to the playoffs? You're playing pretty much every other night. It really came out. It comes out now after a game like that, heading into this stretch. Why he made the deals he made. Now we can say what we want about Paraco, obviously that didn't happen or Thomas. But to add more depth, you just need more guys. Because I'm not going to call it load management. But guys are going to need a night off and guys are going to get banged up a little bit. Yeah, there's people that say, let's go face-offs that they don't matter. And that's just ridiculous. I mean, face-offs do matter. And Karek and his first game with the Buffalo Sabers proved that.
In the last 25 seconds of a one-goal game, he was up against arguably the best face-off man in the National Hockey League or close in Ryan O'Reilly. And he won a both. And a night where he wasn't even 50% yet. That made him 50% by winning them. But that was one of the reasons they traded for him because of face-offs. And he wins both key face-offs and they win a one-goal hockey game. And then his second game, he only played like a little less than six and a half minutes. He scored a goal, got in a fight and was seven and nine on face-offs. And you know, face-offs do matter, you know, especially in key situations. A power play is a great example. So, I mean, you lose the face-off, they ice the puck, you just lost 30 seconds so you're two-minute power play. Because you got to go back, get the puck, bring it up, gain the zone, and all that, you win the face-off, you're set up. And you have those 30 seconds for your power play. So, they do matter in key situations.
Let's talk a little bit about the Sabers at the Forward Spot tonight. Anything different that injuries, anything like that, that guys in and out of the lineup. I know Greenway's still not ready, right? How that looks right now. Any other injuries you can update us on? Yeah, no, we haven't talked to Lenny and they didn't practice yesterday. So, we're still, you know, basically where we were for the game on Sunday. And I hesitate to say no more injuries because there were some people with some busted up faces and everything, you know, in that locker room. They were exhausted. They put everything they had into that hockey game. There's no question about that. I don't think there were any injuries, but we don't know for sure, especially now that we're, you know, 48 hours out. And then, tonight, obviously, the sharks come to town. This is an interesting team. They have Maclin, Celabrina. I was talking about him a little bit earlier, Paul. You know, makes the Olympic team has a nice Olympics as well, but my career obviously running that team. They've done a nice job to come up from the seller
of the NHL over the last couple of years. Yeah, Celabrina, I knew he was a really good player when he was drafted. I didn't realize he was this good. I mean, he was the second leading scorer in the Olympics for Team Canada. I mean, McDavid was one. He was number two. And he was just a force out there. I mean, Maclin, Celabrina has 32 goals and 57 assists for 89 points in 61 games. Next is Will Smith. It was only played 48. So I'll go to the next guy, Tyler Tafoli. In his 61 games, he has 50 fewer points on his own team. 50, then just shows you how good this young kid is. I'm looking forward to seeing him. It's first time the Sabers have played the sharks this year and I can't wait to see him. We were talking a little bit about, yes, I mean, oh, and a little bit about the schedule coming up in how Saturday, I don't want to get too far ahead. The Leafs come to town on Saturday, and you know, Paul, the Leafs, you know, fans have taken over the building for so long. And I do wonder, I wonder if Leafs, Fans will sell their tickets back to Sabers fans
considering what the Leafs are right now. Yeah, I don't know. Leaf fans are pretty, you know, they want to come here. I mean, because they can't go see their games around and take expensive, so they might stick with their tickets or whatever, but understand, too, yes, it's still going to be ex pretty big Leaf contention here, but understand, too, most of these seats were sold. If a season ticket hold its sold or seats, it was long before the Sabers started this run. Don't forget the beginning, they were in last place in the conference, so that's when a lot of these seats would have been sold, not in the last 24 or 48 hours or anything like that. All right, we expect to hear from Lindy tonight or today at some point to find a little bit more about the lineup or anything like that. Yeah, Lindy talks. After the skate, we usually get in the locker room first, talk to our guys and get my pre-game stuff and everything. Then Lindy talks, usually done by about 1130-ish. I just want you to know that I plan on basically calling a new every single freaking day that I'm on the air
to talk to the Sabers because... Obviously, I want to hear the boards, that's all. I love it, I do love it. I know, hey, in all fairness, I didn't know what time they were skating today and I asked you about different times, but no, you're right about that, I do love it. But Paul, it is a different era we're living in. Listen, Sabers always matter. And I know we're in the middle of bills, free agency and all that. But right now, man, I mean, this town can't get enough of the Buffalo Sabers hockey and Buffalo Sabers storylines. Yeah, I was telling our boss today. I said, you know what? I said, right before the draft and the playoffs you should send the sound I out to some establishment. We'll do a show together. Well, the hockey guy and the Saber guy together and have some fun. Paul Hamilton will be, yeah, that would be great. I'd love that. We will be dialed into you tonight at WGR550.com. Of course, on the radio broadcast with Brian Cosio as well. And I'm going to see you up there in the press box. I'll be joining Brian during one of the interventions to talk a little bit about the bills and free agency. But also because my son's hockey team, it's, you know, they do the youth hockey teams.
They'll be there tonight. So we're going to be playing. Is it playing? No, they're not playing. They're just going to go and enjoy the game together. I didn't know they were doing the intermission in the game. No, they're not doing that. But they're going to have their name up on the board, probably, and something like that. Welcome and all that. You know how they do it with the youth hockey programs. That'll be them tonight. So I'll see you in the press box when I join Brian and we'll be paying attention at P-ham 1717 as well. So I have a great rest of your day and go to the locker room and get what you got to get done, buddy. Okay. Sounds great. Take care. All right. That is that is Paul Hamilton. We will take a time out. Sabers tonight. Take on the sharks. And of course, let me just tell you Paul Hamilton on WGR. Can I get to this note here? Hold on. I haven't, folks. I promise. Hold on. All right, we're going to talk with Chris Thomas, the game Atlanta coming up at the top of the hour. I just ran across an article. I had heard some of this scuttlebutt recently, by the way,
but nothing that I could dive too much into and it's not my beat necessarily, nothing like that. I wasn't willing to share it, but now it's out there in the sphere that I can tell you. This is from Nune's Magician. Nune's Magician. It sounds like a funny website name. It is. It's a website that covers Syracuse University Athletics. This is written by Dominic Chiapone and also Kevin Wall. As you may or may not know, Syracuse is looking for a new Athletics director. The John Wildhack Buffalo native is retiring from Kenmore, I believe. He's retiring and they're looking for a new Athletics director. According to Nune's Magician, Kevin Wall and Dominic Chiapone, one of the candidates for the Syracuse University Athletics Director position is former Buffalo Bill's president, Russ Brandon. Now that makes people go, what?
If you're Syracuse, you have to do your due diligence, understand everything that goes along with that landscape. For their purposes, I would think maybe not even at AD, but the way that Athletic Departments operate now with GMs, like these teams, these schools are hiring GMs with how NIL works, with how all everything with the financial landscape of college sports works. I mean, that would be a guy, a person who's been in, it's much more like professional sports now, professional football, professional basketball. I don't know if he'll get the job or not, but there are a few different people who are on this candidate list that they are reporting and writing it out. I just wrote about this. I just tweeted about it. I should say at WGR 550, I'm sorry, at Sal Sports, because I want to get the other names, how their likes, I believe she's already on staff there.
And there's another person here it is. Hold on, Nick Carparelli, he's from Syracuse, and he actually has been, once was the football administrator with Notre Dame, then went to the NFL to be the director of operations for the New England Patriots. So anyway, apparently, according to this article, I just read, and I just tweeted it out at Sal Sports, Russ Brandon is a candidate for the Syracuse University Athletics Director position. Not something I'm reporting, but telling you that it's being reported and putting it out there. 803-050, Chris Thomas joins us next. We're going to talk about Dee Alford joining the Buffalo Bills from the Atlanta Falcons. Talk about the Falcons signing to a Tongue by Aloha, what that means for them. And then at the bottom of the hour, we are going to try to get you kind of a govern live meeting with the Bills media here on the North Town automotive extra point show. More of the North Town automotive extra point show coming up on Western New York Sports Giant WGR. Hey, everybody, Sal Kapatio here from my friends at USA Installation.
