Hour 2: Andrew Painter Vs. Aaron Nola In The Playoffs

0:00The only reason the boys lost that game, they know, they know, they know. No runs. It was a quiet day for the bats, which is going to happen every once in a while. But painter was the story for me yesterday and really the way he's pitched since he came back from the minor leagues has been a major story. And we're now, we're now moving towards a very good problem for the boys to have. And that is for them to decide who should get the ball in a potential game for of a playoff series. So clearly, you know, Sanchez and Luzardo in some order have been their best two pitchers for a long time now. I think Luzardo's the best pitcher. I would hand them the ball in game one. All right, Luzardo, Sanchez, Sanchez, Luzardo. We're gonna cross our fingers. That Zach Wheeler is gonna figure this out, right? And we're crossing our fingers. That last Sunday was the start of Wheeler come back around. No Wheeler, okay, Wheeler. Okay, so here's the question. What? Who gets the ball in game four? Aaron Nola has been better for two months. Nola? Or Andrew Painer? Nola. Are you sure about that? Yes. I'm not. I say that with a straight face because I'm going with the vet. I'm going with the vet in the situation. Now, painter has pitched well and it looks like he's worked his way out of whatever it was.

1:01He was going through. And he is your future, right? But I would probably go with Nola in that situation because we've seen moments where it looks like the moment has been too big for Painer. It hasn't been lately, but I still, it still resonates with me when I was listening to the, I haven't had a chance to listen to a lot of games, but he was on the mound. And I remember Scott saying something to the effect that he has to learn how to throw the fastball. And he was struggling throwing his fastball. So, he hasn't since he come back. I mean, he's both like a different picture. Well, I mean, he'll get his opportunity, Joe, but if we talk about right out the gate, I'm going with Nola. I'm going with the better. It's on my radar that I would give the ball to Painer over Nola. I just think his upside is higher. I mean, yes. No, I mean, no doubt, but in a situation like that, I'm going with the bad. If you are, so let's, so I understand your point. I think the fillies probably will go with Nola. But if you're telling me that one of these two guys goes six or seven shutout innings in a playoff game

2:02with like eight or nine or 10 strikeouts, it's Painer. I just think Nola, to me, Nola, and he's been way better. And I like the way he's pitched lately. And I try, I feel better about him clearly. I just feel like there's, I, there's like a ceiling to what he's going to give you, right? It's going to be five or six innings in a playoff game. And you cross your fingers. The one or two home runs he allows is with nobody on base, right? And it's like five or six innings, somewhere between one and three runs is probably the Aaron Nola start in the postseason. That, that if I can guess it right now. The, with Painer did yesterday, and really what Painer's done, two of his last three starts, the St. Louis start, and then yesterday against Arizona, seven innings, one run, eight strikeouts, no walks against St. Louis. Yesterday, seven innings, six strikeouts, no walks, two hits. There's a high end right now to Andrew Painer that I, Hugh, I, I just didn't expect this year. We didn't see it at all the first four months of the season. Like, Hugh, this is the guy that they told us he could be. No, I know you're excited about it, but, but still, you know, if we're talking about, you know, starting, I'm gonna go with the veteran guy.

3:03It's like, he's gonna get his opportunity, but I'm gonna go with no. So it seems like you, nothing can move you the next four weeks, because I'm in the point where I can be moved. Like if Painer keeps pitching like this, I'm hamming the ball in October. Like, I need to. This is, this is a difference making picture. Now, for you, is it no matter what, or if Painer dominates the next month, can you change your mind? I could change my mind, but it, but it would be, I'd respect for Nola. If that's what we're talking about, we're talking about that third picture. I'd respect for him. That's the conversation. I ask him how he's feeling. And then it all depends on how he looks, moving towards that the playoff series. If he looks decent, then that's, I'll just throw him out there, but if he looks like, you know, his stuff is not there, whatever. I ask him about it, but I'm not, it's not something that, for me, I'm just gonna do, you know, without consulting him. And I know a lot of people say, why are you concerned him, he's a player. I mean, he's a vet. And, you know, if he feels that he can go and he can give me something, you know, I'm going with him. Well, it's interesting you bring that,

4:04because I feel like that in the past, specifically Rob Thompson, they were just deferred to their guys, right? Like Castellanos would play, Castellanos would get a lot of that, Nola would get the start, like they would just defer to their guys because they've been here. I don't know how Dom Adonley plays it. I mean, the couple things, I mean, the Wheeler thing is its own thing, right? Like, are they just gonna give him one of the top starts because he's Zach Wheeler, or are they gonna go off of what their eyes are telling them, which he's not pitched well for a couple of months. And the same thing with Painter, are they gonna, if he keeps going like this, I trust him, 2-1-5-5-9-2-9-D-4-9-D-4. All right, let's go back to the phones. So I believe after the year, it's either he get a brand new contract from the Eagles or he's gone. I don't think he's gonna- He's gonna do the game, right? Yes, I don't think he's gonna play on this deal next year. I don't think he's gonna wanna play on this deal. And you know what, he's earned the right to say,

7:05I don't wanna play on this deal. I'd rather I want some more security. Yeah, so he'll do it. So he earned the right, should I mean what? How did you earn the right by doing what? By being a good player for the Eagles, Jay. And why is this so complicated? We talk about Taylor Hurts, right? Yeah, Jay, why is this so complicated? Every other player in town, every other player, every other- You're gonna figure out. Nope, it's not hard. It's not hard, it's not hard. It's not hard. It's not- You're talking about the office, so- It really is a gentleman's channel. Because this- We need to establish something. We've created this- Not a down-jump. No, not a button. We have created something that is so- Joe Buttons. We have created something. Giggles Douglas over here. We've created something that is so silly. What's that? Every other player, specifically on the Eagles, because it's a salary cap league. We talk about them in the context of their play. If it's going up, if it's going down, if they're worth their money, and if you think the Eagles will either draft a cheaper, younger player. With this player, we can't have that discussion apparently.

8:06It becomes so emotional. You guys are emotional. I'm telling you how this is. The same thing when a son retic wanted more money. The same thing when any of these players over the years, it's about their play versus salary. If Jordan Milato falls off, guess what they're going to do? They're going to get a new cheaper left tackle. That's how this works. This would be quarterbacked. It's not. It really is. But I don't believe it is. So I don't think the Eagles do. I know you don't, but I'll be trying to do it. Yeah, it's not. But it isn't. But if it was you, every quarterback that had success would always stay with their team. It's not different. We just, we make it different because we're emotional. So Jay, I put him back. It is about his contract. I think he's going to want to raise after this season because he has been, has been, doesn't mean he will continue to be a good player. And if he plays well, I think they'll give him a new contract. If he doesn't, I think they will find a different quarterback, make or break. It's so simple. Go ahead, Jack. Claire, share your say.

10:07He's not a black ant catch, too. No, why can't he play better? Why can't his accuracy be better? Why can't he run better? OK, so the accuracy, so let me tell you, if this receiver hadn't quit on Rouse, don't you think and he gave full effort? Don't you think he would have caught a couple more passes? Perhaps. Perhaps he would have caught a couple more passes. Who can make perhaps? Perhaps. It's the all world, AJ, that you're talking about. If you had to follow through and then quit on his team in the city, we might have won some more games, right? Yeah, so the office might have looked a little better. Right. You don't think any of this was Jalen's fault last year? Did I say it? I said he had a little bit, but you just put it all on him. No, I'm not input on it. Never on every day. New, new, new, new, new, new. Everything. Well, of course I talked about AJ. AJ placed with a hatred. And we'll say nothing about the defense that got beat about Jennings defense. The defense. The defense. The defense carried them all season. No, no, no, we can't fight. Oh my god. The defense carried.

11:07Do you watch the game with your eyes open or closed? It must be closed. That's enough of J&W's filling. The defense. The defense not carried the team last year. Did I watch a different team? He was talking about the player. He probably was talking about the player. How many points do you often score the playoff game? They didn't score a lot. I can't remember exactly off the top of my head. It was 19. Yeah. So it's unacceptable to score 19 points in a home playoff game against a defense that was nine or defense that was coming here with zombies. They were signing guys off the street. Yeah, but on the flip side, I think they're the 49ers off as a little banged up too. Everybody was banged up. So, you know, but I get J's point. You got to score the points though. You got to score. What was J's point? That it wasn't all J&W's fault. Who said it was? No, but that's how sometimes I'm not saying you, but that's how sometimes it sounds. Because people just want to defend the player. No one's, no, I don't ever heard one person. Not one anywhere. Say Alassias was all J&W's fault. Not one. We're talking, we're making things up. No, nobody said that, but here's the reality of the NFL. And this is how you're going to look at it. I know you're probably going to ask me after I make this statement.

12:09You're going to be like, what does that got to do with us? To a type of lower is the starter for the land of Falcons more than likely. Kurt Cousins is the starter for the Raiders. That's happening. That's how hard it is to find quarterbacks in the NFL. And we have one that year, last year was a down year. But when you look at his resume, compared to the two guys that are about to lead a team, a new team into a new era, that just shows you how hard it is to find anybody. May I give you the flip side? May I give you the flip side? Yes. Two years ago, the dolphins gave two of the same contract as J&W. And the idea that you can't move on, he went, two, at one point, led the NFL in passing years. It's pretty easy. But what is happening to him? He fell off. Fast decline. And the dolphins ate $100 million to get him off the team. Yeah, got him off the team. So like the idea that you were good ones, means we keep you forever. Did the dolphins just show we don't care? Yeah, but I would say, and I'm not, look, I think J&W is better than two.

13:09That's not my point. My point is though, you say it's hard to find a quarterback. The reason too is the Falcons quarterback is because the dolphins said, you're getting so back so fast, we don't want you here. Yeah, he's still got another shot. Now Kyle McCord is QB2. I know. Our form quarterback. Practice squad. Yeah. It's just crazy how you, I just look at it, especially in the NFL. I mean, well, on the pitch, quarterback's point is like, you as bad as you were, like Kurt Cousins last year was bad. And then you look at two of them, and they get another bite at the apple. It's crazy. I mean, I think J&W will get it. No, shot if it's not here. I know. But what I'm saying in comparison to J&W is, you know, when you talk about compared to their seasons, and you look at J&W season, looking at it like, I know, but don't we have a higher bite? I'm confused. No, we do. No, I'm not arguing at Joe, but what I'm saying is, I guess in a nutshell that I'm willing to work with J&W a little bit longer to get him where I know he could potentially be. But isn't that this season? Like that to me, we've arrived there.

14:10That this is the year to see if he, the season and potentially beyond. Well, that's, see, that's where we depart. Cause I, ah, that's, ah, ah, ah, we depart. Can we hear from Don Mattingley, Don Mattingley yesterday, after the game? Sure sounds like he's impressed with his young pitcher. I think he's, I think he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's talking about how impressed he was with Painter. And he's like early in the season, when both Nolah and Painter started, it was like oh, and now it's the opposite, right? You feel pretty good. I, I wonder at the right time too. I just found it interesting he put those two together. I wonder if he puts them in the same bucket, right? Two guys that struggled. Now they're pitching well. And he's going to have to decide, you know, probably a month from now, who am I handing them all to in a playoff game?

15:10That's why I said, that's why, you know, I mean, I didn't hear that cut, but it just kind of feels like, if it comes down to that, that's a conversation that you're going to have with, with, with, uh, Nolah about Painter. If he's pitching well down the stretch. Well, I don't, you, you said conversation about Nolah, like, well, they don't know. What, what, no, no, I'm saying Nolah, you're going to have the cut, where they don't, but you, you say, hey, you do want him to know because you, you, you're going to need him, Joe. At that, at some point, you're probably going to need Nolah. And if it's, if it's as, as a starter or in the bullpen, you're going to need him. Well, okay. So that brings us back to when we were discussing a few minutes ago. Should they try to go all out for the, for the playoffs, right? At some point, they might want to start kind of decelerating one of these two guys to pitch out of the bullpen. You know what I mean? If, if, I, I would think the guy that doesn't start in the playoffs is going to come out of the bullpen and help. And, and logically, you would think Andrew Painter, with his stuff would be a better bullpen guy. So maybe in the next two weeks, they start to rip him down. That, that will be interesting. I tell on if they really want to win this division. John and Sherry Hill, what's up, John? Hey, guys, look, I got the answer that Jay was looking for.

16:14When you're, when you get facing third and nine and you're running button hooks on the outside, there are five yards deep. I mean, yeah, there's the problem right there. Can we at least run a route that gets the first down? I'm not taking it all off of Jaylen. I'm just saying the play calling was so predictable and it was, it was, it was pretty obvious where we're going. Sure. It was on. Do you think there's any? Do you think potentially there's a, Jaylen has a role in that? Yeah, he may be decision making, but you, the guy's not a spring chicken. He's not going to run, but look, listen, I'm a, I'm a Jaylen supporter. I want that to be out there. I want everybody in the city because I'm very confused right now in the city, guys. I mean, I love, yeah, I've been sitting here for an hour, listening to like, really tent on Ted last. I just want to grunt and say curse word. I don't understand. I don't know. I mean, Jaylen has presented us with nothing but class, police, patients of the, you know, teach ability. The guy is been in every different, often it's every different year is entire life. He's coachable. He's, he's a good, but yeah,

17:15before you go on, the free to go on. This is, this stuff you're saying, it's not really true. I mean, like, it's not, like, the offense has been the same. The players have said it. It's the same offense. Not now this one is brand new. Now, there are different play callers, obviously, the offense has been the same for the whole time he's been here until this one. It's just been different people in the place. And the second thing is I generally want to believe what you're saying, but stories have come out, sourced from people within the Eagles saying he's not those things you're saying that he hasn't been coachable, that he pushed back on change. So I don't know, man, it sounds like a great story. I'm not sure you're true. I don't know. I don't know. I just think I was a winner at the same time. You give them the benefit of the doubt because he's a winner. He's a winner. The guys are winner and look, you know, it's funny how we're talking about the Phillies and the contrast between sports. Oh, we want to win the East. We want to win the divisions. We want to take the one thing this and that. And in football, it's like, you know, oh, no, stats don't matter. This doesn't mean it's only about a play. I couldn't disagree with you more, by the way, about the Phillies. I wanted to play every single day. We've seen the past all-star break,

18:17winning divisions in the past. It doesn't do any good for our team. I want them out on that dirt every single day until they're in the World Series and got a, and you still need a little hope. I mean, my last question to be on his call was, am I a fool for really buying in like I did in 23, but I want to stick with the Eagles, man. You, you're not a fool, Johnny. You're not a fool. You're a fan. I mean, not a fool. You think you're a fool. I mean, I love you guys. I mean, I mean, I don't think you're a fool. John, the way they played the last month has been phenomenal. I don't think it's fooling you. It happened to know, not to know, but then you did the game like last night. You get scared. They can't put goose eggs up. No, I know. And it makes you reevaluate your whole position. Well, listen, I mean, the Phillies were just going to have to show up every day like we do. And that's when I'm confused about this city. OK, you got a guy in Jalen. And you, please, you know, don't cut me off until I ask you one question at the end of this. You got it. Anyway, you said this was a premiere organization. Yes. When did that happen? I grew up remembering all the downed

19:18dynasties who ran into Dune Town. You know, we can't do it. We can't win it. We were just destined to fail. We got there every year. We were as good as anybody else in every league. And we just never got it done. When all of a sudden this whole city changed and say, hey, 11 leans isn't good enough. Make it two super bowls and three super bowls and winning one and winning two. And when did it not go enough? When did our quarterback on a hot seat now? Because of one down year where the O line was trashed, the offensive coordinator was super predictable. OK, hold on. It's not a one down year. The passing game. Guys, are you watching the same sport as me? The passing game has gone backwards every year since Jalen's peak in 22. When I thought he was awesome and should do one. Force in it to AJ. John, John, John, he's got this mental weight on him. OK, then it should bounce back up this year. I hope that's it, John. I just I've watched the green. OK, I'm nervous with these versus receiving through. Now, Dan, you're pretty small. I understand the point and I agree. I'm going to let you answer your question. But just quickly, to me, they became that one.

20:19How we came back into power. I'm going to be out of the closet. Yeah, well, you can go back to Andy. I mean, I just the last 25 years in Profitball, I know. Absolutely. I know before that, the Eagles were not a premier organization. But to me, since Andy got here, Patriots, she's, you could throw a couple Peyton Manning teams like the Colts and Broncos. You know, we could find three or four of those teams that have been really good. But the Eagles are right there. They've been a four-second boss. I hope you don't misunderstand me. I agree with you. 100% we are the plus five. Yes. You took the Patriots out. And maybe even the Chiefs, we're the best team in the last quarter of the season. I agree. I agree. And I'm on that train. But I got to give it up for guys like Don and Ignat. Guys like Jaylen Hurts, who brought us there. And my question is for you is that would you rather have, if you could swap the errors in the quarterbacks, would you rather play for Hurts? Would you rather have McNabb now? I mean, everybody, I've all tended in the city for a long time. And everybody hated McNabb. I felt like I was an apologist for him. All of the time.

21:20And Jaylen Hurts, I respect that man more as a man as a player. And he's got it, Don. He's got the ring. He was the best player in two Super Bowl. He was. And we got one home with him. I mean, would you rather have gone, that it's always going to be so. The pocket passer needs to run. The running passer needs to pass. I mean, when are we just going to be happy? We are a premier organization in this city. Maybe a city needs to start acting like it. Being a little loyal and showing some things. Well, okay. All right, Don. It's a great phone call. It's a great, it's a great phone call, John. I love your passion. And to me, when you're a premier organization, loyalty goes second to the organization. Winning, winning and continuing to win. That's number one. You can't just stay low because the guy was good before. And you can answer the question. All I know is this, to me in the last 25 years, the Eagles have not been driven through all the success by a Hall of Fame quarterback. It's just, they don't have their mahogas. They don't have a break. That's what makes it special. Right, but that to me also points to, it's about the collective. It's not about this quarterback or the quarterback before

22:20or the quarterback before that. That's where I come from. The Eagles, as of right now, have zero Hall of Fame quarterbacks. And look at, now in this 25 year run, I'm talking about zero. Maybe Jaylen will get there. But they've won as much as all these teams with all these Hall of Fame quarterbacks. The Eagles are not driven by the quarterback. Yeah, but I think, I think in essence, you're right. But you're diminishing at the same time, even though if you feel Jaylen is in a Hall of Fame quarterback, what he brings to the table. I don't think I am. I'm just not, to me, it's not worth $60 million a year in a salary capital. Well, that's where I come from. Well, obviously it was worth it to them. It's not what it has been. Well, they paid them, they paid back to the first Super Bowl. Right, but then he went to the second. And now we're in this mode. So to your point, the question is, prove it. You got to prove it here. Jaylen or Dunlman? Dunlman. I'm not answering that. Well, you can't cop out. He asked your question. Dunlman was my quarterback. So Dunlman? Like the man in the same breath that you asked me that question, you spoke about, Lord. He did.

23:21And I, and to a man, as good as Jaylen has been to this organization, Dunlman was the catalyst to put us in the position for you to have the success that you're having right now. He was. The strength and conditioning, we talked about this here in our meeting. Yes, you can work out, you can actually do an Eagles workout. You can go into the, I'm assuming it's an Eagles locker room, right? Who was it? Who was it? Jay laser. He was glazing the city. He was glazing across the city. And he worked out in the locker room. You can go in there and work out like an Eagles player. You'll go through a physical training with our strength and conditioning coach. What does it take to be an NFL player? Yeah, I know those workouts. And you gotta remember, as I remember them, they're short intense workouts. Yes. And with the technologies that they have now, they can tell you exactly where you are as far as your fitness goals. Oh, I'm sure they can track with all the analysts and measure. And that would be a great baseline.

26:25Yeah, it feels like it would be a very fun and humbling experience for a regular person. A lot of people would have thought. Yeah, they can play. Yeah, they can play football. Yeah, but we talked about London and you being there. There's a London trip in radio, Thon right now. This is a very reasonable trip. I think it's about $9,000. And that's not, that's not bad. Go on. It's so loud. Like on location, they're a partner with the NFL. They kindly donated this. The Eagles provided two lower level seats to the games. And you can be in the action, you know, travel, go to pubs, meet up with you. Yeah, we're going to be able to put, well, we're going to, after we take care of business, right after we take care of business. That's a fun perk walking around a night. It's that huge duckless over there. It's going to be huge. Yeah, I mean, the Super Bowl trip, that's affordable right now. It's an L.A. Who doesn't want to go to L.A. The stadium's incredible. So that's available. So I think there's something for everyone. We have trips with the team. We have experiences with our players. We have running out of the tunnel. So what that experience is, is when the team's introduced, you're going to run out on the field and you're going to like the first, yeah, when the, yeah, that is true.

27:27The cheerleaders to the flag and then you'll hold the flag for the anthem and get to stay on the field. So that's a really special experience. That's really cool, man. That is really, really intense. I every time I've shared that experience with someone, there's so much excitement and just nerves because you're in the dark hallway with the lasers going in the smoke. The players seem so big because they have their equipment on and their helmets and there you are and you're running out straight onto the field. This is really cool. You know what's funny about it? It's like, I don't, I can't think of any other organization that offers all of these different things that you can do that is so team-centric, like just being around a team and getting to know these guys. Oh, yeah. And I think it really, it's the culture. Jeffrey Laurie, this is important to him along with Super Bowls. And so when we look at the organization and how do we leverage that and our fandom, our passionate fans who are willing to donate or support in any way, and we create these magical moments and I think that's what's been amazing. And so whether it's a player-led experience where they said, I want to go fishing or last year we had a Peloton item, we have all these unique things

28:28or it's running out of the tunnel or going into the FANTONAL high-fiving players before the game, there's so many special things. Pulling up the net for the field goals. That's one thing. That's a cool one. Ground out Tony Leonard and the ground screw of letting us make that. Yeah, yeah, shout out. That's cool. The game day experience, there's so much with it, you get four passes to the pre-game tailgate and who we missed this earlier, you get to come to our pre-game show, right there. And of course.
