2:47I don't know what to expect day to day, the last 24 hours have been wild, the last 7-8 days have been crazy, that's March And it is St. Patrick's Day here on the Morning Show, we will be celebrating in style, we're already a few pints of Guinness in here Cheers, no, but on Friday apparently we won't be, but the other guys are going to be live at Hurley's Irish pub Hurley's isn't open at 6am, but I believe the Campbell and Gallo are going to be there, and at least that's what Campbell told me last week, I hope I'm not letting the cat out of the bag here And Melnick will be doing a St. Patrick's Day show on Friday afternoon, good morning Sean, good morning, good morning It's minus 1, not even, it's 0, feels like minus 8 though with the wind, the wind is crazy I opened the door to the car this morning, I'm trying to think here, I got into the car and then I needed to get out to scrape it off

3:50I opened the door and just grabbed by the wind and just wham right into a tree, that was next to the car, I was like oh great I don't even know if there was anything, it was the stupid Volkswagen that we have, so I don't really care that much But that thing's been through, it's had a family of vermin living in it, everything in between But it's going down to minus 4 later today, parade day weather, they're now saying 2 degrees, since you're high, 60% chance of floreys though You know, you've been in the game for a minute, Sean, I've been in, I'm coming up on two decades in the business We used to have to go to the St. Patrick's Day pro, dude, it was very much mandatory I've been lectured and spoken to several times You know, like it, get some, do something else The wind is gusting right now to 67 kilometers an hour, by the way Do you have any highlights, low lights of St. Patrick's Day? 4:50Oh, several Several, I've taken my old dog Leon, he's walked the parade route with me a couple of different times I remember we did that Lucy, I believe Lucy and Leon in the same parade Yes, that's correct, yeah, that was, I love that very much, I remember how tired he was I think it took him two days to recover because you know, we walked all the way, I guess where we'd get off the old, at the old bay Like a Philip Square and then I remember I would park my car at 1310 Green Avenue So we'd walk to the bay, we'd walk from green to the meeting spot, the parade route And then from Philip Square back to Green Avenue And that was a lot for my dog, that was a lot for him I remember a few, we had some great floats, we've had some great floats in the past Especially before I guess they really started to get strict, much stricter with the rules of the parade Where before I remember we were handing stuff out, people were handing stuff to us What were you handing out? I remember we were doing coffees, our Irish coffees at one point

5:50Whether that was a black market, Irish coffees, probably I would guess People jumping on and off the float a couple of different times, depending on where you were I mean, that's now prohibited, yeah, there was a tragedy at the parade some years ago There was exactly a kid fell Correct, yes Yeah, real tragedy indeed, yeah And for the one that always sticks out to me, you know, and it's a bit crude obviously Obviously, what I'm about to say, but we were turning the corner from fort, going to hang the right on St. Catharine I was standing next to Dan Robertson And, you know, there's a few people at that corner where the parade really begins, right? There's just a few people And one guy with a great voice with the ability to project was yelling at an announcer that doesn't work here anymore Unmistakably Canadian It's the music that raised you

7:50So a good solid mix I remember it was Dan who told me that story the first time and the glee with which he told that story And he still does to this day with what I think too is one of his favorite That would be his favorite St. Patrick's Day member But I honestly like once you're on the float and you know people are waving and you're I mean it's impossible Unless you're just a miserable SOB It's impossible not to have a good time when you're in the middle of it right But the worst part of it And it's not even close is how early we had to meet yeah And then just stand there and we were just stand and mingle stand and mingle and it was always it's always cold I think I've been to one or two parades where it was tolerable always started late always yeah and we had to get there so early Yeah, well that was the thing of the benefit of one benefit of experience for me was Eventually realizing that you could show up like a goods 30 45 minutes later than they asked you to indeed and still not miss anything

8:52Yeah, because the the worst part is sitting there waiting for it to start in on running Levextreet Open win blasting you in the face. Yeah, it tends to I mean sometimes there have been days where the weather's been nice indeed I can think of like a couple Having been a participant and I would think at this point like I don't know 13 14 parades probably We so yeah no longer our participants in the parade I mean it's really I think it comes down to a money thing It's just you know our corporate overlords have seen fit to say that it's not worth it for them to pay for a float for us or whatever else Yeah But one of the worst day brother when we did the bicycling so that was that was the worst we get to that in a second But you mentioned though the sort of the Wild West nature of it when you first started doing it you started doing it earlier than I did Yeah, haven't been in the business longer than I have yeah, but I still did I've gotten to experience what it was what it was

9:54Yeah, and now what it now is and that's the other thing is I used to go to the parade It's a lot actually like my career covering the Canadians at the Bell Center that I used to go to the Bell Center To have fun and watch games with my friends and then I went to the Bell Center to go work And the same thing kind of happened at the parade was we used to give me my friends we used to go to the parade It was like a thing and yeah, we didn't care how cold it was it really was never a consideration Pack a backpack full of beers and take the Metro downtown and post up on the corner of peel in St. Catharine or somewhere like that And watch the St. Patrick's day parade and drink beers I remember I'm sure I've told you the story of getting on the 24 bus and on hopped Bob Gain Yeah, and then we happened to get off at the same stop as Bob Gainey at the time he was the you know general manager of the Canadians And walked he he walked down Peel Street and we walked down Peel Street and he got to the corner of Peel And there he was and he pulled a flask out of his pocket and stood there and watched the parade and he slipped from his flask

10:57We just you know we don't think we ever said anything or anything like that But you know, we were just like how cool it was that Bob Gainey was riding the bus and breaking out of a flask But yeah, I mean back in the day we used to go to the parade and so we started working and going to the parade Yeah, and it was still like a drinking event you know, I'm in my like early mid 20s and we bring maybe bring some beers Maybe there'd be some beers there maybe some Jameson would be involved along the way sure and then I remember there was a moment And you go to the bar after the parade too we used to go to the bars after the parade had we have like an all-access to herlies Which was a pretty hot thing to have yeah and end up going at yeah and partying over at herlies or whatever And this was before herlies too got dinged a couple of times for overcrowding and started to take it much more seriously As far as you know the fire and specters coming and giving them a massive fine and even shutting them down on their biggest weekend of the year Herlies and if you've been in there back in the day on St. Patrick's Day was insane

11:59Just a just like animals at a meat market, you know Yeah, but yeah, I remember that when Bell when the Bell astral media Merger occurred and so we became employees of Bell And there were some some changes some significance some less significant but one of them was I remember Showing up to the parade and I and being on the float and I guess I think I must have had a flask of Jameson You know inspired by Bob Gady right and You know taking a swing from my flask and handing Jay Farar my flask and Farar takes a swing and our boss Matthew One of our bosses Matthew would looking at me horrified Saying you know what what is that like it's Jameson do you want something he's like what he's like you can't have You can't have Jameson on the on the float. I was like what why it's the St. Patrick's Day parade

13:00He's like you know corporate guy Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, liability this and that so that was a bit of a yeah I was a bit of a wake up call one year And then of course the bike which you know Melissa Mastro Giuseppe who is our former promo coordinator back in the day Yeah, I was a lovely girl and yeah Yeah I've extremely talented individuals somebody who we we loved working with over the years Mm-hmm, but she and I'm not sure I mean she had her own bosses and stuff but they had the idea And I think sometimes when it was it was like you know a float costs this much money We don't have this much money. So what can we do to get TSN radio into the parade and there was walking the parade route was One of the options was the preferable one I think which we've done several times But it's also you know, it's a it's it's a bit humiliating For lack of a better term and I'm sure that the people watching the parade didn't see it that way But for my for our perspective it was like wow we used to we used to have a float

14:02Yeah, we were big time like the other big radio stations and now here we are being asked to walk the parade route It was certainly a humbling no doubt thing that would happen you know Yeah, but the this giant bike and if you're a long-time parade attendee you'll probably may remember this year It was a particularly cold St. Patrick's Day And I think we knew ahead of time right like we had been it's not like we arrived and we're like what what's going on? Exactly. We knew that there was this giant bike Yeah, and it was you know must have been like 30 seat bicycle Yeah, human powered bicycle that you had to pedal to make it go Yeah, it was not a light bike it was like I remember the seats were hard and the pedaling was I mean you had to put some power into that I mean you had to put some power into that to get that thing to go maybe It was yeah, who's at Alex Robertson was with us two I think I remember Yeah, because it was an all hands-on deck situation. It's a 30 seat bike We've got you know eight full-time employees maybe nine at the radio station at the time and not everybody even showed up

15:02Right? Yeah So we had maybe half the seats on the bike were full Wind is howling and it's cold and we had to power this god damn yeah bicycle Yeah, the entire parade route And it was hell yeah, it was hell it was it was the worst experience that I ever had on St. Patrick's Day parade day And listen first world problems obviously but it sucked and I'll never forget it I'll never forget it and it's one of those fun things that honestly at the time I was I was literally yeah miserable Yeah miserable yeah And now you look at you look it's it's a classic example of the sort of thing that you now look back on and laugh because it is hilarious That we all have that common shared terrible experience Yeah, but at the time I remember just being like well get me out of here why is this happening What is the purpose of this who is going to see us suffering on this giant bicycle and I like yeah you know what I'm gonna do on Monday

16:06Listen to TSN 690 like I just you know there was no way I could make those two yeah things connected my brain yeah and still can't I mean the other were you there for that when the parade was not on St. Catherine and we had to meet at Plastays are and walk along I guess it must have been Was in Sherbrook um doesn't ring a bell but I remember no butler um was walking with us in that parade and remember we were walking straight into a headwind And just when you had talked about you know where people inspired by watching us ride those tandem bicycles and same thing on that day walking straight into the wind Everyone had their head tucked down because the wind was so strong and it was so cold We were just speed walking to get through the parade like there was no can't do that you got to follow the pace of the parade There was no waving you can only go as fast as the people in front of there was going I think we were towards I forget where we were right but So sorry you said on Sherbrook street no I don't think it might it couldn't have been on Sherbrook

17:09Where would it have been right above Plastays are I guess I mean president president Kennedy Yeah amazing of I guess amazing of that's it yeah it was amazing of but you were walking west correct that's unusual yes yeah we are We are the starting point was at Plastays are where the swing configuration is yeah and then we'd walk west on amazing of exactly yeah no I And it was brutal there was a time to like that when I wasn't I remember Moffit came he had like eight jackets in an aloeed jersey with them I when I wasn't full time here and even I think for a period when I was yeah I would just schedule I got to the point where I was just I was Schedule something that I would be out of town 100% that I would just not be here so I would not have to do that Mm-hmm because anyway what can you say like I said first world problems so what are you doing on Sunday now like we're not I think it depends on the weather yeah you know maybe I'll bring my daughter I think my the little guys a little too still too young to go She was there last year and and I think I'm trying to remember I think did I have her with me one year we haven't been in and right I mean we

18:14Would last pre COVID last year they had we had a we had a like a double-decker bus okay we're on there's another fun memory I don't know I was that last year I'm pretty sure was that I don't think Peter Vryonna is gonna get in trouble for this but I know that he Got he did at the time getting trouble for a bit Peter Vryonna's we were riding on the bus and somebody threw him a beer and he caught the beer Opened it cracked it and shut the beer and it as people cheered on from the crowd and then proceeded to get in trouble for doing that I got a stern talking to for doing it right um I stand by it it was bad ass Pete good for you Yeah, yeah last year we had the double-decker bus was just nice because you can go down yeah Was that was that two years ago because I was at the parade and must have been two years ago must have because last year I was at the parade I attended the parade with my friend friend of mine and and our in our kids yeah yeah so there you go happy same Patrick's day All right, let's get to the action last night the national hockey league games of note on the out of town scoreboard

20:18It's a 5-2 final and the Red Wings get things maybe back on track after a difficult stretch Other game of note the Bruins and the Devils the news on this one a little bit better Although the Bruins did pick up a point it went to overtime and the Devils in a highly entertaining Over time period ended up with the win Poster knock wants it gets it tucked away from Hughes Macklemore up the order I heard about Patrick Kane's waiting on him a half for Carter Carter It's over with six seconds to go So Jack Hughes had a big night three assists Yeah fastest devil ever to 400 points Yeah and remember of course Jack Hughes is the one who broke Canada's hearts with that three on three overtime goal At the Olympics that you may recall

21:20So not a great result for the Bruins but I mean from a Canadian's perspective that's what you want I would say so the Bruins go in the distance there was six seven seconds left and overtime When that one ended so they yeah they were on the road in Newark yesterday They had to travel the Montreal where they will face the Canadians and a crucial divisional game Yeah tonight yeah fourth and final meeting of the season between the two teams tonight Boston is one two of the three games but Montreal's won win was that big one was December 23rd They thumped them six to two but the two other games they've been as usual kind of close one score games So look I mean the Canadians remain in third place in the division They do yes The red wings are tied with them on points now but the Canadians own the tiebreaker Or maybe it's just because they played fewer games they have a higher points percentage So they sit in the three spot Detroit sits in the four spot in the division on 82 points But they've played two more games than the Canadians the Bruins one point behind the Canadians And the Canadians hold the game in hand on Boston as well

30:38There was very little trust in that 6th defenseman It's how everyone plays Well you have a presumptive Shulky is not winner one of the top Shulky guys I mean he's got to do it as well It has to be better coverage And it's a structural thing so not necessary Man zone doesn't matter You just have to clear the planet and that once in a while You have to not take risks You have to play comfortable hockey And this team seems to want to play edgy hockey Because it can make fabulous plays There's Michael Farber's perspective from yesterday And again maybe back to coaching right is that the game planet has that been the constant game plan of What's our best path? I mean they clearly can score goals But I think Farber hits the nail on the head when it is

31:39It's more than just Jack I Strubel in out in out in out It's how does a guy like Granted a supreme talent in Leo Carlson or McLean Celebrini How do they find these open areas deep into the offensive zone time and again And how did the Canadians get burned? 32:46Yeah, you know be ready to transition That was it you want to talk about training camp and points of emphasis so it was definitely a point of emphasis But to the point that he continually has been making in his media availability And that's something that came up with Arpan Masu when we were talking to him yesterday is that he is being driven crazy by their seeming inability to properly recognize when it's time to do that and when it isn't And the game winning goal the other night would obviously be a glaring example of that More from Pierre McGuire But I would say this they've lost their awareness defensively and they got to get it back and hurt They've made no choice I know New Jersey playing Boston tonight when they're getting a break Montreal on the potential to you know get a tired team tomorrow But they they got to get back on start reading on people defensively next this is not good enough to say it's just not And you know it yeah what no I mean you can say that you know you can say that but

33:52I mean they've played Connor they played 66 games who I'd love for him to expand on that like who lean on who's gonna lean on who consistently like not just for a shift Not even for a period like all night and then do it again on Thursday and then do it again on Saturday I just don't they're not built that way that's not who they are I've I've more or less come to to realize that's just not we go back to the strategy talk again And in the personnel that they have it's just not who they are at all I would say that they're a fast defensive unit still though more Sean Is this is this a controversial statement if you're gonna bring up 66 games yeah in the majority of those 66 games they have not looked as bad Defensively as they looked in those games over the weekend that's that's not the norm for them I would agree with that but I would also counter by saying they've been They've been inconsistent you're not they're not like ninth in the league and goals against average I mean bottom like so 23rd or whatever it is yeah

34:55Because of what just happened it's it's been a progression all season that's true and there's been there've been highs there've been lows and I expect I do expect them to come out of this I I something about those California teams something about the they it's it's a bad matchup stylistically for the Canadians and I like the fact that they've got Division games coming up this week as far as get right games go although TBD how it actually works out here's Aaron Ward how do I feel about them right now I feel like they're kind of on the Cusp they're teetering right now and I and I and I kind of feel uncomfortable as I watch them like okay last year they had one Job one goal it's stood in front of them and they had to go 20 games and and have their best right now they look around the league and Some teams are up some teams are down and the ambiguity of the situation both in terms of where's goal tending at where do you Line stand how you're going to play in a given night it's not all solidified and so that for me is what makes me nervous about this team right now

36:02That's Aaron Ward you know you heard Farber bring up the name of Ryan Bocker it's hard not to look at the blue line and especially the Hudson not Not Being as Dominant as a left side as a right side defenseman as he says a left side defenseman Ryan Bocker is a right shot defenseman And you know that would give the Canadians three right shot defenseman yeah anyway yeah Craig button appeared yesterday on Melnik in the afternoon and spoke at length about David Ryan Bocker and his list of the top 50 Draft affiliated drafted players that are not playing in the NHL and the Canadians have four of the top 50 including David Ryan Bocker who's who's on the list Here's what he said about Ryan Bocker potentially helping the Canadians right now and a big reason for it too is I think you have to get the left side

37:02I don't like Katie going playing on the right side is a left shot defenseman I think he's way better on the left side which forces another player over that side If you get Ryan Bocker in there now you can have it set up one two three one two three left and right and that's going to leave some players out of the lineup But I think David Ryan Bocker would help in that regard more from Craig button on Ryan Bocker I've been watching them play and what coaches love more than anything is to know exactly what they're going to get And I think David has worked really hard at establishing this is what you're going to get shift in shift out I think his size his abilities yeah he's green yeah he's a rookie but I think it would help the Montreal Canadians at this point in time So I'm not sure I just I don't feel qualified to really weigh in on this as far as I've seen David Ryan Bocker a little bit lately and I've liked what I've seen But I I know it's a boring kind of take but I really just defer to Pascal Vaison the Canadian Scouts their development guys yeah Marta Saint Louis can't use in Jeff Gordon to make the call on this

38:14I think they're being careful I like that approach and if they call them up I'm all for it if they don't call them up then I think that's probably the right play because I really feel that they've got They should and I have faith that they do have a better feel for this than I do I will I'll say this you know and it was I mean you've been more than consistent on trusting these guys you know I you know It's clear you've come to the conclusion and I think it's the wrong conclusion that they've built up enough good stock of smart and patient decisions that allow you to extend that opinion right I get that But what I will say because I'm in the same cat I don't you know watch a ton of love out rock and hockey if it's on I have to catch it and look out great you know and I read a lot and I see what's going on I see the minutes and you know I don't see a guy who's getting caved in you know But the one thing again is and fans are gonna fan and the reaction right now is to me a little over the top it's a little column here there's this impression of he's gonna fix everything

39:25And to that I say let's gear down for a second because in the real world if he does get called up and you know maybe as a nice reward for stepping in into a big roll with angstrom out with the upper body for six weeks And he's played heavy minutes and he's been dependable and people are saying it's the best version of David Rybacker we've seen yet at the American Hockey League that right there maybe is deserving of some sort of reward great job let's see what you look like But in that world where he does get called up we're not talking at least I don't think so and I believe this we're not talking about a guy who's gonna play 21 minutes a night He's probably gonna play 10 minutes. He's probably gonna be a you know a six defenseman there in that type of situation And I just get the send they got to call him up because Alex carry a sucks and then Gully's inconsistent he's playing on the wrong about left right left right Like he may be the answer but I just don't think you should get your hopes up today sky high not everybody but some people sky high that he is going to boom with the snap of a finger fix what's wrong with the Canadians in their own it

40:33Well and then that's there's the pressure aspect of it for sure it is it's just it's it's I'm sure internally they're not they wouldn't be telling him hey it's here's your chance to solve all our problems Yeah, but there's the perception certainly that the Canadians right now are getting dragged for the way that they're playing defense in every corner in every language print TV radio Podcast everywhere and that if you call up the franchise's top defensive prospect in a moment like that there is going to be some expectation That he is going to be the cure for this problem, which is not a fair expectation to put at the feet of a guy who's at this point that's right of his development curve You know that's right and that's why you had more speculation come out again around you know a couple of things happened over the weekend One was the Canadians were in a hot pursuit of a right handed shot defenseman so what does that tell you about what they're trying to do recognizing

41:36What's a roster flaw trying to fix that willing to trade for a player to fill that hole because maybe again they want to give David Ryan back or look But I don't think they see him as as the the the answer right now to cure what's wrong right they're looking for a little bit more experience And I think it was Kevin Biexa on a new Maxim LaPierre podcast who said that the Canadians had a deal done But they got it in just after three o'clock on Friday's deadline day and the NHL said no we're not let we're not greenlighting this one So apparently there was a deal done negotiated the teams that come to terms but here we are not talking about a new player on the Montreal Canadian So it just it just leads me to have the opinion that well as good as David Rybacker is looking They're they're not ready or don't see him today as being the guy that's going to slot in and you know lane Hudson style never look back They're just not there yet I think you know perfect world

42:36Rybacker continues to play a significant role for the Laval rocket their good team I'm fine with going to the playoffs he plays a big role there training camp comes next year He has a good off season good training stays healthy comes into camp healthy wins himself a spot in training camp next year That to me sounds like agreed more of a perfect thing and if he doesn't then and so be it he goes back to the NHL and he continues to work on his game But that would be my sort of dream scenario for David Rybacker if I had to draw it up right now and wait for Anna Mengstrom to get healthy And you know get him a couple of games in the Laval this is the guy you've seen for 10 games I believe Yeah, you know with Montreal and let him get healthy get his get his feet going again and get the cardio up and call him up Maybe coming up next year on the morning show How did a fox travel from England to the United States by sea a sea journey for a fox that's next year on the morning show
