Some close, some not so close. And we have the story of the tournament going on right now in Miami of Ohio. One game in. They are the Cinderella of this tournament because of what they were able to do in Dayton just a couple of nights ago. But in early deficit, as you heard, Isaac Glowen, Cron, say Red Hawks, Aaron Torres down 11 right now, that's the six seeded Tennessee volunteers in the in their matchup right now in Philadelphia. Yeah. Tennessee really solid squad, obviously coming out of the SEC thought this would be a tough matchup. And it has been there in the middle of a three minute scoring drought. Trilling by 14 points with about seven minutes to go in the first. It got worse for them literally in the 30 second handoff that I did to Aaron. It was 11 and now it's up to 14.

5:12So now the question becomes who is Cinderella? And a Cinderella may be playing right now and we don't even realize it. It could be right under our nose. And right now, Alabama and Hofstra are playing an Alabama and don't laugh. Alabama has an eight point lead in you're saying, well, if Hofstra is losing by eight with eight minutes to go, how could they be the Cinderella? One of the questions I post to you guys. That's not the Cinderella I'm talking about. Can you have your second leading score arrested on drug charges and not be eligible for the tournament in the same week that you're playing a game? Can that turn you into a Cinderella? Because Alabama right now is playing without their second best player because he was arrested on drug charges on Monday morning in Tuscaloosa. But Alabama going on a run in the tournament without their second best player. That characterize Alabama as a Cinderella playing without Aiden Holloway.

6:16I ask you, Aaron Torres, I don't think you can be a Cinderella just because you're without your second best player because listen, Kentucky has injuries. UNC had an injury. They're certainly not going to be Cinderella. Duke has injuries. You could argue Duke's second best player is out right now with an injury. So I don't think you can qualify them as a Cinderella simply because the best player is out. Let me ask you this. How far would they have to go in the tournament before you could hypothetically even consider them as Cinderella without accounting for why they don't have their second best player? Good question. It's very difficult against Texas tech who lost JT topping for the season. They don't have him. In Christian Anderson was dinged up as well, but he was actually able to play today when Texas tech advanced. So it wouldn't be on Sunday if Alabama wins that they would be the Cinderella. However, from that point on, if you face a number one seed in Michigan, you're an underdog.

7:17It's a story. If you were to win that game, you have now upset a number one seed and you would go to the bottom half of the bracket where I know I was stayed had injury injuries are everywhere. But for Alabama to get to the elite eight after beating a Michigan team, I think it begins at the sweet 16. Sure. I think that's when it starts, but should they be banned entirely from Cinderella category? Because an arrest on drug charges is completely different than someone turning their ankle in a practice. Exactly. Right? Yep. So that's what we're trying to decipher. Jason Stewart. Do you have any thoughts on whether Alabama should be considered a Cinderella despite the arrest earlier this week? I think purely based on the definition of Cinderella as it pertains to the NCAA tournament, they can't be a Cinderella only because when I think Cinderella, I think the Disney version of Cinderella, only kids are allowed to watch Cinderella, the animated version on Disney.

8:19So kids should not be privy to the fact that the guy had 2.1 pounds. Yes. Just one pound. Just 2.2. Just shy of what Aaron pointed out was a possible face 10 years of risk minimum 10 year sentence. Okay. Maybe I shouldn't be laughing at this, but it is like this is the ridiculousness of college basketball. Well, and I will tell you, I was thinking about this. You know, you talked about if they beat Michigan, what they would do is pick up the momentum of the weed isn't that big of a deal crowd that maybe would not otherwise be invested in the NCAA tournament because as somebody who talks about college basketball, you know, this time of year every day, I was critical of Alabama for, you know, having yet another legal situation. And the comments, I would say were probably like 80 20, well, it was probably like 80% other fans saying Alabama basketball is completely out of control, 10% Alabama fans.

9:22Why do you hate our program? And then 10% you total square, it's marijuana, who cares? Now listen, I'm going to do, I'm going to do the disclaimer that we all do in this business. I'm not saying I never made mistakes when I was younger, 20, 21, 22 years old. I feel very confident saying that never in my life have I knowingly been in the presence of 2.1 pounds of marijuana. But again, according to a certain segment of that population of a population of a total square. So so that population now all of a sudden they got their bandwagon and maybe it's their Cinderella. What's worse, playing with the player that played in the NBA, you know, sign an NBA deal or this because there's a lot like a lot of these lines are now blurred when it comes to athletics. On just on the surface, I think it's impossible for a power college football, power

10:27four college basketball, power five school to be considered a Cinderella. Sure. But I'm even a little like I'll waver at it. If it was like a bottom biggest school, I'd maybe hold off like it was like let's say Providence made the dance and they that would be a little bit of a different story. It's difficult for me to think that Alabama could be a Cinderella, especially on the heels of something we talked about a little bit ago on Fox Sports radio. And if you missed it, Aaron and I were in for Stu Gotts and company live as we were throwing things on here's the thing to Iowa Sam, which by the way may get a name change. Alabama made the final four a couple of years ago. So then going on a run here wouldn't however, I don't know how many people expected Alabama. So beat Hofstra today. I think it was a trendy pick for an upset. I don't know how many people had Alabama even going far considering what happened on Monday morning in Tuscaloosa. So that's why I raised the question is Alabama in actual Cinderella. If you lose your player because of the drug situation, well, let's let's let's turn the

11:33phrase a little bit here. Let's go from Cinderella to feel good story. If they beat Michigan to advance to the elite eight at that point and let's say they beat a two-seater, a three-seat to go to the final four. Can they be a feel? Let's say it's three number ones and Alabama who went through Michigan and whatever. Can Michigan be the can Alabama be the feel good story of the tournament? That is an angle that I think is intriguing because when you don't have Aden Holloway, these players are the ones that are penalized, right? So that's that's also like why of like these players who want to get to the NCAA tournament want to get to a final four again, want to win an national championship. I'm sure they would love to have their second leading score on their team. So they are playing at a disadvantage. I don't know if it'll be a rallying cry or not for them, but you you would have to think that they would rather have Aden Holloway than have what's then not have him in this

12:33NCAA tournament. So I think yeah, it would become a feel good story in a way that you're yeah, you're cheering for these players who now have a less of a chance to achieve the goal of a final four. Sure. I have a comment, but I don't know if it'll get us in trouble. Jason Stewart. You can mull it over. I'll just say they lost. They lost more than apparently they may have lost more than just their second leading score. Let's put it that way. Okay. You do it that as you please. All right. I've been steaming on something ever since Aaron set it on the air for the last five minutes. And I just have one thing to say. Okay. And I don't want to get political. I don't want to piss anybody off on a Friday afternoon. If you know prisons are filled with people that make poor judgment. Okay. If something is illegal and you knowingly do something that is illegal, then that that tells me about your judgment. So prison time or what have you doesn't matter that pot has the laws have become more laxed about it. You chose to do that when you knew it was illegal at the time.

13:34So I just don't, whoever's been given Aaron a bunch of this stuff on social media, that's my blanket response to that. I think it was Corvette guy 326. I think that's who it probably was. Yeah. Probably letting you know, giving you the business. But also to that point, does that hurt the current Alabama players that you had a player who was doing stuff, which would then make them a bit of a Cinderella? Did you feel scorn when one of your friends does something that you would never, ever think that they would be capable of doing? And you want to stand by them for, for, but depending on the level of whatever it is, there are decisions that you have to make. And ultimately, like you may lose a friend and that friend could have, you know, meant whatever to you in your life, getting big picture, but with Alabama here, I don't think, I don't think they're going to, I don't think the NCAA is going to wrap their arms around the crimson tide if they make it. Now it would be interesting if it was like 1997, final four, three number ones and a four

14:39seed and the four seed ends up coming out of the bracket as the national champion like Arizona did, but I just, it's, it's tough to think that I think that there's, there's a soft spot in my heart for Alabama playing this game. And I think we all actually had the hard-nosed edge of what we thought of the crimson tide entering today. There's that fair enough like, you know, just, it's easy to think that there's no reason to cheer for Alabama and that they're probably not going to win because of how bad this week was. However, there is a reason to feel some sort of empathy towards the current Alabama players there because of what happened to them. So winning this game against Hofstra, which I would think that people use that if you're going to pick an upset. That's probably the spot that you're, you're going to pick or one of the popular spots. And so Alabama coming through on it, I actually think it's not a feel good story. It's not a Cinderella, but there's something good to it that we just can't grasp.

15:43Yeah. And we can't see yet. And you're right. And you know, and listen, the one thing I will say as somebody's covered many NCAA tournaments, you get a lot of media availability. So we'll see if any quotes come out of I had no idea that was Aiden's character and I'm his roommate and I've never seen such a thing. And maybe somebody does say something like he let me down. You know, I'm a whatever. So if they make a run, we will have plenty to find out of if this was an isolated incident that no one was aware about or if it was something else. I don't think anybody would think Gonzaga is a Cinderella as a number three seed. They're going to have Texas tomorrow in the round of 32. Gonzaga's been there a while, but one of the things that hasn't been talked about is the changing of the guard in college basketball that's actually going to happen this year. There were minor storylines, but ultimately, Gonzaga says goodbye to the West Coast conference. So going to be a member of the pack 12, the new pack 12 that will reform.

16:45And today, we had a Santa Clara team take Kentucky down to the wire and was two seconds away from winning that 10, 7 upset and having two West Coast conference teams make it to the round of 32 in a tournament where we had three West Coast conference teams make the field of 68. Gonzaga three seed, St. Mary's was a seven seed loss last night to Texas and M and Santa Clara was the 10 seed. I marveled at something over the last 24 hours. And it's that Gonzaga is so strong of a brand that they got two teams in the tournament sure. In addition to who they are, when you look at the rest of the West Coast conference in the play, it's not different than many other mid major conferences or low major conferences. St. Mary's has had a long run of success. Santa Clara and what Herb Sendek did today and what they did this season should be commended. And no other league Aaron, are we looking at it for what the West Coast conference is

17:50as a whole? Are we looking at a league saying they could get three schools in? And the only reason we are is because of Gonzaga. And I think that that should be applauded because we look at Gonzaga in a lot of different ways. And they're now going to become a different team. They were the apple of the big 12's eye at one time, right? And Brett your mark in the big 12 were trying to put together a basketball powerhouse isn't necessarily happening with Gonzaga, but they're doing a pretty good job of it to otherwise. But Gonzaga was so strong of a brand that if you were able to beat Gonzaga or compete with Gonzaga, you were considered one of the top 30 teams, 35, 40 teams in college basketball. And it's not that St. Mary's didn't deserve a bid and it's not that Santa Clara didn't deserve a bid. It's the recognition for Gonzaga that no other school in the country has the power that they do to actually elevate to other schools to make them NCAA tournament worthy teams.

18:53Yeah. And I think, you know, the, the, the situation is the St. Mary's thing happened about seven eight years ago. They started kind of this run of, of every year being in the, in, uh, in the mix and then Santa Clara, the last couple of years has really elevated as well. And by the way, it's not just them. I was thinking about it. Francisco Todd Goldin, who's now the Florida head coach was at San Francisco. They got in that large bit about three or four years ago. And so one, it is the, um, it is the North Star that you attempt to be or attempt to reach, but in the process of getting there, even if you can't quite get to the Gonzaga level, it allows you to get to a higher level schedule better, get better games in the noncon, elevate the whole league. So I think it's a very interesting point by you in that, uh, it doesn't feel hyperbolic to say that this will probably be the last time that the, the WCC is a three-bid league. And I'll be curious if, if they can, you know, especially with Santa Clara kind of emerging the last year or two, if they can stay even at the two-bid status, I don't think so.

19:54Well, I was going to say, is there, does St. Mary's, it won't become the new Gonzaga, because there's only one Gonzaga, but are they good enough where if you beat them two out of three times that they could get in that large and then by default, you get in as well. Probably not, but you never know. I, I think that maybe in rare years, but I just don't think it would be how we looked at the Mac this year with Akron and Miami of Ohio. Look at what Miami of Ohio had to do. You know, me, I've been to St. Mary's, yes, fan all the way since early February when I went to the University Credit Union arena, Pavilion. I already forgot what it was, but it was the University Credit Union arena or Pavilion and they beat USF the night before the Super Bowl. I loved it. It was, it was magnificent. It was a magnificent atmosphere. Loved everything about it. And so I followed St. Mary's over the last month of the year. And yesterday they were just completely overmatched by Texas A&M team that is

20:54middle of the road at best in the SEC. This is who St. Mary's beat this year in non-conference. St. Thomas, Minnesota, pretty good school, but playing in the NIT. Chattanooga, Ohio, North Texas, Arkansas State, UC Merced, Wichita State, Virginia Tech. They lost the Vanderbilt by 25. Beat Davidson lost to Boise State, beat FAU, beat Northern Iowa, and then they went into conference play where they lost to Gonzaga on the road by eight and then beat them in the final regular season game of the season in Maraga. Maraga is California. It's home game. It's a great point. If they go 17 and one in that league, but don't have the win over Gonzaga, like is a win over Virginia Tech and a win over Wichita State enough to, you know, I know any other school probably not. That's what I'm saying. But I think that just Gonzaga being in that league and being competitive, yeah, to then to answer your question of just being competitive

21:59is telling you, okay, we think enough of them that they are. And that's, this isn't a St. Mary's conversation. This isn't a WCC conversation or a Mac conversation or a low major. This is a purely Gonzaga conversation for how powerful and how meaningful that program has been in so many different ways in emerging from a no name. I remember when John Stockton was in the NBA and we were saying, where is Gonzaga? And so now over the last 25, maybe going on 30 years now as it was the late 90s that that they ended up emerging. But to see the power that they have and how that power is now going to change. Here is to see and how it plays out. What is the new pack 12 and how those schools end up basically, you know, following in the in the shadow and maybe riding the coattails of Gonzaga basketball. Yes. No, it's very interesting. And that would obviously be it'll be interesting because Utah State will be part of that league. Utah State is playing right now.

How would you characterize your first season in the league? I feel like it's been good. Definitely going to be better. Just still try to learn. Still try to grow, ask questions and still try to understand the lead. So right now it's good. Everybody else is good, but I can look back at it and be like, this was a really good, I'll go see you. Obviously a year ago you were playing in March madness before we get to your time at Maryland. Like what has been either the biggest adjustment or biggest surprise now that you're a pro compared to college in high school? Probably, I mean, probably the amount of games, I guess,

How many times have you watched one shining moment to watch your game winner against Colorado State last year? That's from that time to now. I'm probably like. 200 probably. I literally say every month. It's a bunch of times a week. Derek,

32:32hold on a sec. We're just having a little trouble with the connection. Let me get this right. So it's at least 200 times and at least three times a week. You have watched that game. Was that? Is that sufficient? That is amazing. We watched it again today. Take us through that play because we had a buzzer beater earlier today with Santa Clara hitting a shot and then Kentucky hits one at the buzzer. You were kind of in the same situation when Colorado State hits a shot. I think you even tried to get in the face of the three at that point, but six seconds left. Take us through that whole scenario of what happened last year leading you to your one shining moment. Yeah, they came down here to shot a big three. And then I think it's like seven seconds left. One of my teammates got it out of bounds. Call time. I ran up and played coach Willard Axe, who wanted the ball. I said me and then the rest is like history. You were you were teammates with Cooper fly. Just going to ask that. Yeah. That Montverde Academy. You're eating up the maps when

33:34you face him in the NBA. Like is there is there added incentive when you go up to Cooper and can do you follow his rookie season at all? Yeah. I watch all my friends. All my teammates are rookie seasons. They are doing good. They are doing well. But yeah, it's just friendly competition. Just like so we talked about playing against each other, playing in a lead and stuff. So just excited and just happy to play against all of them. Are you guys the greatest high school team ever assembled? Yeah, I think we are. You are. Well, we appreciate the time. Are you going to be taking in the tournament? I know. Terps obviously aren't in it in the first year under buzz Williams. But are you excited for what we've got the rest of the way in the brackets? Yeah. Yeah. I'm definitely excited. I'm definitely going to watch. I'm going to watch going over. Still watch some of my friends. That's in that still in the tournament. But I'm just excited to see who's going to win because I'll make sure I'm certain who's going to win this year.

34:38Now you said you watched the one shutting moment three times a day or you have people come up to you talking about that shot three times. Yeah. Like like both. Like I hear about it. People talk about it. Like a lot. Oh, it's great. Well, Derek, best of luck the rest of the time with the Pelicans this season and in the future. Yeah, right at the last second. And then when you watch the one shutting moment from last year,

35:39he gets into a really good part of Luther's version of the song like a build up right before the chorus. And then he got him celebrating. So that's every kid's dream to be right to be able to do that to hit the shot. I talk I talk about this. My hometown is 9,500 people. We really don't have a lot of great athletes come out of our ice go. But we've had you know a few here or there. And one of those was Paul Jasperson who was the state player of the year in Wisconsin about 10, 15 years ago. Paul's not the head coach of the G leagues, the Phoenix Suns affiliate in Arizona. And Paul hit the half court shot to beat Texas for Northern Iowa in the first round. Wow. A double A tournament. And he got into one shutting moment. He jumped on the scores table. And so that's always a neat thing for just because it represents the whole entire town. So I always think that if there's a kid that makes a buzzer beat or not only is he the one watching it and the schools, but everybody that that was associated with that player throughout. So I'll always always remember that. And it's a memory not only for the player, but for so many others as well.

36:42Well, now that we're talking about our high schools. So I didn't really. So Mark Lazry, who is the Bucks, I believe still owner, but you said he's either sold or isn't. Yeah, he sold his share to Jimmy Haslam. Yeah. Okay. So now it's Wes Edens and Jimmy Haslam. So we had Rick Buchar on earlier and you referenced that. I said, I knew he was the Bucks owner, but I guess he's not the Bucks owner anymore, but he went to my high schools. All right. Did you have something Iowa Sam? Well, you brought up. And of course, I should have known this, but you brought up Paul Jasperson. And he was featured prominently on Sports Center last night for that shot against Texas to, you know, the buzzer, but buzzer beater. But you know, that was the, I think that was the year after Ali Farokmanish. I want to say at least a couple, yeah, a couple of years. So Ali went to my high school and he of course helped beat Kansas and get to the sweet 16 off the with Northern Iowa. Sure. And I'm sure everybody in your high school is like, yeah, I mean, Northern Iowa is unique because you're also in, you know, it's a smaller school, but you're in Iowa like for us being in Wisconsin, it was unique as well. Ali, of course, now coming off his first year at Colorado State,

You don't want that to happen. But two, you know, listen, I know I was state one by 200 points today. But there's their best player Joshua Jefferson left the game. I think it's an ankle. I don't know if it's been confirmed yet, but he was seen walking around with crutches in a boot. He is not going to play on Sunday. And all of a sudden, you talk about Kentucky, potentially now having a pathway to the sweet 16 and it would have been the same for Santa Clara. It just can completely change the

I remembered Michigan State being in that regional because I was there growing up as a young college basketball fan in Hartford, Connecticut had zero idea that it was Tom is those NCAA tournament debut. By the way, fun regional UNC with Vince Carter and Antoine Jamison were there. Princeton. I remember Princeton about that three year run. They were there. How about Illinois Chicago as a nine seed? You talk about three bid leagues. The MCC was a three-bid league that year, but I was at Tom is those days. You also Eastern Michigan with Earl Boykins was in that regional. I know I went long.
