The attacker, Karen Smith, had been at the same party earlier that night at the maiden head branch before getting a key card from staff by claiming he was her boyfriend. He was later convicted in sentence to seven and a half years in prison for the assault and trespass. Staff handed over the key card in the early hours after he provided her name and mentioned text messages. Even though they had not exchanged numbers, she had locked her door and was staying alone for the first time ever in a hotel. The victim feels deeply let down by the hotel, saying they should have called her room or verified better instead of just issuing the key. She reported the incident right away, but grew angry her weeks later when the chain defended its actions. Travelage offered her a 30-pound refund, which she called insulting, and the company now admits that was mishandled.
