HMS Victory's Masts Lifted: Major Restoration Underway

Workers used a 750-ton crane to lift off the last three masks, the Mizzin, Four-Mast and Bull Sprit as part of a 42 million. Pound Restoration Project at Port Smith Historic Dockyard. This caps a big push that started with the main mast back in 2021. The front mast came down on Monday and the team wrapped up the other two after a couple more days of precise work, all done overnight to dodge, weather and crowds. Officials are calling it a huge success, crediting lessons from earlier lifts and input from specialists like Riggers. The ship, Lord Nelson's flagship from the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, has been rotting since the 1920s until this dry dock. Revival kicked in. Now the mast sits safely nearby for conservation, with scaffolding going up around the hole through 2033. The site still opened to visitors, including spots like HMS Warrior and Mary Rose wreckage.
