Miami Heat win in Cleveland, break their losing streak, and other one coming up against Cleveland on Friday night. We will get to the details of this one.

2:28Again, a surprise considering the way that the heat have been playing. I know there's going to be a lot of focus on one thing in particular, which Brady and I talked about on an episode prior to the show yesterday. And then he just wrote about it for on SI. Make sure you check that out. Also, of course, check out Off the Floor. And I know there's going to be a lot of focus on that. So we will get to it and it's about Powell and Hero and the shooting and all of that. But honestly, they defended tonight. That's not something that they've been doing recently. Alex, who has now disappeared. And I were talking about that on a pregame show that they had to get back to sort of, Spowe was going to say, just do it better, do it harder, do it, whatever. And it does look like they did that tonight. So Brady, I'll go to you on that because I know you have some thoughts on the other part that's going to get settled here. Why it was Cleveland struggling to score early in the game? Yeah, so I could say it's all the defense. But I mean, I think we could also mention there on the second night of back to back. And I know Miami hasn't had success.

3:29There's against a lot of these teams that have come in on the second night of back to back. They want to what was the Houston L.A. Beat Miami in that same state. So it's not always easy. But I think you saw a little bit of tired legs out there from Cleveland, where there was a lot of shots that were short early on in that game. But Miami did a good job as well. I mean, I thought, you know, they matched up with a little bit of Davion and Wiggins on hearty and Mitchell. And they just kind of just followed them around and kind of stayed with them on screens. A little bit more drop in this game, which is kind of expected against a team like Cleveland. So I thought Miami did a good job. I felt like Miami defended so good in the game where I felt like they should have been a more. They were up as somebody just dropped in an infomercial. I just feel like early in the game, they could have scored a lot more. Like they were only up like three to five at that point, where I felt like it should have been double digits. Just because of the way they were able to get stops. They able to extend the lead in a second quarter, the third quarter at all falls apart,

4:29or it's a 37 to 20 flip. So yeah, all that aside, I thought the offense for parts looked okay. Like everything looks better when you shoot 40% from three on what was it? 45 attempts. So like, yeah, like that, that's all is everything. I mean, at that time, both the issue is that's not sustainable. But it is a good win. I mean, they were able to scrape this one out. There's certain guys that I think we should talk about two of them that came off the bench night. That I think are the reasons why they won this game. But yeah, the hero pal thing is important. I said it on the episode we did the way to fix this. There's no real way to fix this. I mean, the defense is always going to be problematic, which by the way, they did not close together in this game. I mean, there really wasn't real closing minutes, I guess, considering the fact that they already have double digits by the time that time came around. But here it didn't come back in in clutch time in this game. They closed out with the lineup that was working. But I do think, I mean, I like the idea when I look at these stat lines, that pal and hero stat lines are pretty exact. I mean, 19 points to 18 points. Three of seven shooting from three to four of eight from three.

5:30Seven of 12 from the field, the six of 11 from the field. And two and two from the line two and two from the line. They almost had identical stat lines. And I think that's good. I think when they're able to balance that out a little bit, I said on the latest episode that I think the biggest thing is just firing from three for getting the foul baiting for norm, for getting the over dribbling from Tyler, like eliminating all that extra stuff that just doesn't work when they're out there together and saying, okay, let's just fire away from three off the catch consistently. And they came off the game. They did that. I mean, Norm got a couple of job early, Tyler got one of the corner. When they do that, they just look a lot better out there today. Yeah, I mean, we talk about the starting lineup. And I think it was a surprise, Alex a little bit that he put Larsen on the bench tonight. Still was a factor started with with BAM. Wiggins, powell Mitchell and hero. And I think a lot of I kind of groaned when I saw that. I'm like, well, that's probably not going to work. But let's stay with the hero powell thing. And then we'll get into the bench how he closed and.

6:31And the role that were played tonight, because they got the where that we've been waiting for for a little while. And he actually gave him a little bit of room to play tonight. He played 20 minutes. No Drew Smith, by the way, no Myron Gardner. Of course, no Yovic, no Fontechio, no Kishat Johnson. Those are the guys who did not play. He played nine, at least 15 minutes, including Yaka Jonas. But I guess this is what was envisioned before the year, Alex. Like this was sort of the best case scenario that you get efficiency from hero and powell. They scored as Brady said, they scored 37 together. They made 13 of 23 shots. They made seven threes. You know, they combine for six rebounds. They combine for six assists. Like this was. This is kind of what we were we were hoping for. I don't know. Is this sustainable? Is it just about the fact that they both got off to pretty decent shooting starts? Or can we expect them to get off to pretty decent shooting starts? Honestly, I don't know about expect just because three point shooting has so much variance. But you do there is a certain level of expectation with them to just because they are your best shooters.

7:32And they are both high volume shooters. So you want them to get it up. Sometimes they're going, you know, they're not always going to start the game off hot. Norm has had a tendency of doing that. Especially earlier this season, which is kind of one of the reasons I wanted to keep him as a starter. Just because I like him playing off of their better players and his tendency to go off early in the game. So it was interesting to spoke once that tonight knowing that Cleveland, you know, kind of as we talked about a little bit on the preview. Part of we did was going to be a little bit smaller without Alan. They can afford to kind of try something out like that. I think it was interesting that spoke experimental with that tonight. You know, with the streak that they're on. And that's probably the reason why he ended up doing it. It's just because like, you know, it's not working right now. Let's try something different. But usually I feel like this is something he would try. You know, against worse teams. It's not like these teams that there are a real test to try something new. I don't feel like that's a spell thing. So it was I was kind of like interested and pleasantly surprised that that he tried something like that.

8:34Even though it's not like my favorite look. But just to see him try something different with the cabs missing their, you know, their big guy down low. And I think it worked out right like I think. So certainly, I agree with you because they both were effective in their own right. You know, neither one of them had a bad game. Neither one of them was like, you know, incredible, but both were solid, right? And I think that's what you want. As far as their minutes together on the floor, they were. They had a negative 10 net rating together played 16 minutes together. But overall, it was minus two. So when you're not adjusting for 100 day out got out scored by two, not terrible. Still, you can, you, you would like to see that be a little bit better. Their offense was not very good when the two of them were on the floor. You know, I think again, some of that can be shooting variance. But tonight the shot was in their favor. Like the heat. It's funny the way this game played out. Like the three point shooting was that the swing factor in the most obvious of ways. Like the third quarter, everything went wrong after the heat.

9:35We're making all their threes in the first half. The third quarter, the heat get out scored 20 to 37. The calves are making all the threes. They go seven of 11. The heat, I think went one to 10 from three in that quarter. And then the four quarter flipped back to what was going on in the first half. Like the heat went I think for seven and the four. And the calves did not shoot it well from three. So and again, the heat outscored the calves in the fourth quarter, 37 to 20. Exact score. You know, the third quarter was. So it was just funny the way that it just it. It's so clear like just in the numbers themselves. In a very clear way, three point shooting was the swing factor tonight. And it worked out for them because, you know, they were able, I'm surprised. And I think you got to give them credit that they were able to close them out the way they did after that comeback. Because that was a roaring comeback. That's one of those where, you know, in other games, you know, after they lose the momentum, they don't get it back. Especially against the team with the type of offensive talent that Cleveland has. So I, you know, you got to give them credit there. Yeah, I just have concerns about it.

10:36I don't want to sort of rain on everybody's parade tonight. But I just have concerns about it because it does seem so dependent on them hitting threes early. I give them credit for pushing back against the comeback. Play better defense tonight for sure. Did they do a group bound it? Well, it wasn't like a, you got a bunch more shots often than, but they, they at least went back to. Not getting absolutely roasted and toasted and diced and cooked and every other. Well, that has, that has, that has to be consistent. But that has to be consistent. But I, I just, I'm still concerned about a Mitchell hero Powell starting lineup. In a lot of situations, unless they're on fire from the start, like that's, that seems to me to be. I understand the formula, the formula, though, has to work with them making shots. The defense has to be consistent, has to be level. I just don't think you're beating a lot of good teams consistently. Remember, Cleveland was, again, raiding on the parade here. Second night of a back to back.

11:37The heat of played a lot of teams lately that have been on the second night of a back to back. I think you'll see a different Cleveland team on Friday. I don't know if they're going to be significantly healthier by then. You had to get, I think, the first one because of the circumstances. You know, they have lost a lot of these teams that have been on the second night of back to back. I just, I'm dubious about whether this is really the way to go. I still think staggering them is a better play. I do think that not using hero late is interesting. At this point of the season, there can't be egos. He just has to play who he's comfortable with at that point who's giving it to him in that game. I do want to focus on someone else, though, for the player of the night. I don't care about any numbers. I don't care to look at the box score. Pella Larson is the player of this game. There's a lot of games that you walk away from where he has similar impact. But if anybody could just go back and just don't even watch all 10 players on the court. Just go watch Pella Larson on the fourth quarter.

13:39He sparked this win 100%. There was so many plays you could make. They went down early on the fourth quarter. He has a catch and go really hard left that he gets to go on the left side. He has the save where it's just a chaotic play, a swinging play in this game where he dives out for the balls, saves it to where we're. Finds the cutting Jaime. It was a dunk that puts it could go from a tie game to then putting them up four at that point. You have the other play. It was a chaotic play like tapped it up in the air and he'd like go on the floor. It goes in the other direction. Bam ends up in the end one. You have the open three at the top of the key that he catches and fires and knocks it down. I could go down the line. This was all in the fourth quarter. This was just one after another where it felt like every time they threw a punch, Pella did something and it wasn't always scoring. He did something where it was getting an offensive rebound, getting a defensive rebound, diving on the floor. It's just pure impact. I thought his game in the fourth quarter. He was just a really, really positive stretch.

14:39The fact that they were able to kind of like his out said claw out of that in the fourth quarter. The fact that you were up 21, the fact that you have a 17 point swing in the third quarter. You go into the fourth tied up. Mime breaks nine times out of 10 in games like this. Norm set it himself. They get punched and they kind of just fall over. Pella Larson didn't allow them to fall over in this game. Credit to him. Yeah, I think Tyler and Powell had moments. I think Kaleu, there's a ton of credit. We're going to talk about Kaleu. But I think Pella's the definition of a player of the game. You know why this matters? Because he came off the bench and it didn't affect his performance. That's a message that Spulcher has to get through to some of these other guys who sometimes get moved to the bench and certain matchups. We know Tyler doesn't want to come off the bench. We know Norm doesn't want to come off the bench. We know Kaleu didn't like coming off the bench or at least Spove seemed to indicate that the minutes affected. Where's attitude on some things. Pella goes to the bench and is the most impactful player in the game.

15:41There has to be a message in there that Spulcher gets through to some of these other guys that it just doesn't matter. We saw it last year. And I think this may happen again, ultimately. Davie on went to the bench. Remember, and then Spulcher was playing like 30 plus minutes. This whole thing about who starts is so overrated. He has to get it into all their heads that it is overrated. And when Larson gives you an effort like that. Off the bench. I think that is significant. I agree. We'll do more of this. We'll do more of this stuff. And then Spulcher looks at the way they stand pet of this off season. No need to wait and haven't been more expensive. The crazy thing is that I think most people would be just like to extend Larson and Hawk is in the off season. But then there's this little bit of fear because it would happen to be over. I think they hadn't done that with the. I think these would be easier decisions. But now it's just going to look like they're locking into the same team, which I know is going to get the criticism out there. Before we go to play of the night, and I think you guys have already kind of mentioned one of them. So I'm going to leave it to Alex to try to come up with another one. Let me give you the standings here. As we sit. be sick. So I don't know if anything else is left to play. The heat are not catching the calves, no matter what anyway. The calves are four. This just kind of pushes the

16:43calves more into the four spot. Looks like that's where they're going to end up. I pretty much. They're pretty locked into the four, which is something to take into consideration with these games. Also, it looks like the Celtics and Knicks are going to be two or three, unless the pistons really slide, which hasn't really happened yet, even without Cade. But right now, five through 10, this is where it stands. Teams are now separated by two and a half games, five through 10. Raptors, they're hanging in. 40 and 31. The heat, of course, have two games left with them up there. They lost the two games at home. So right now they trail on the tiebreaker. The hawks are on fire. 41 and 32. They've won nine of 10. They've won three in a row. Actually, I think they won 11 of 12 overall. The sixers are seven, 40 and 33. So they are a game behind the hawks and beat had a huge first half tonight. When he plays, they're tough to beat. We just don't know if he's going to play. The heat are a game behind the sixers. So they are a game behind the sixers entrenched in eight. So right now, that would be the playing matchup. The hornets are a half game behind

17:47the heat 38 and 34. The magic are tied with the hornets at 38 and 34. They're in freefall. They've lost six straight. The heat finally broke the lockstep with the magic tonight by winning a game. So that's where there are. It's 14 to 15, Carletus. Thank you very much. Here's the thing. I know, we've already mentioned the other one, right? So what are we going with? I'm going to mention one here just that I liked. There was an assist where at one point the ball was flowing. You know that he was playing well. I think it was in the fourth quarter. And where it received a pass down low and hit this nice touch pass right to the corner. I was so proud. It was a great and it was just they were flowing in the moment and the ball was really moving. It was it was very like symptomatic of the type of night that they were having the way that they were feeling. The ball was popping in the night, you know, like being able to again come back as we've already talked about tonight after the cab stole that momentum away from you. And really just we're all the way back. Mitchell was going like that's an easy one to roll over. I really liked

23:04that play from where just a quick decision making. Love to see that from him. And again, like they finished with a double digit double digit scores tonight. Finish with a really solid assist to turn over ratio. And that was kind of the other way that on top of the three point shooting that they stood out from the calves, they just they're they're playmaking and their ball movement was just much nicer. A lot of it was probably dependent on the three point shooting. Like I'm not expecting this type of shooting performance either way like from either team in this next game because the calves are great at that, you know. But the heat did their jobs tonight. Like they took advantage of that shooting performance. And again, did it when things got off after losing momentum in the fourth. And again, where was just kind of I like that play just because it was very symbolic of what was going on and what was going well for them. 24:07continue to steam roll on them that you had another game of Cleveland coming up. You get Boston next week. You get filling next week before you get the breather against Washington, which by that will probably have lost 19 straight games or something along those lines. So they had to get one to break this thing up. So the fact that they got it at least levels this off. I'm not getting carried away with this. I guess the one positive is if you played the over in Vegas, you can cash in your ticket. They are they they won more games than Vegas projected them even with the Powell acquisition. They went from 37 and a half to 38 and a half. So they're 39 now. I think if we said before the season that they had position to win 43 games with the young players playing, I think might have been okay with it, especially with not adding anybody at the deadline, which I know is a source of frustration for many. But it just it hasn't felt like they were moving in the right direction. I don't know that this necessarily does it. I do think you're going to get a better Cleveland effort on Friday. I'm a little concerned and I'll let you close on this

25:12Brady that Spowe starts to think the hero Powell think can work. Like that's the negative of this. And he leans into it more because I don't think it's going to work consistently. I really don't. No, like when I say the three-point shooting thing, I'm kind of saying that's like the only way out of it. Like that's the only way to make it somewhat work. I think the reason why he went to that starting lineup is it's a lot easier to stagger the two when they're both starting. Like I think he realized how much it was an on-off thing subwise when you bring one of them off the bench and you're trying to prioritize both and it becomes a little chaotic where when you bring one in for the other, you're almost playing them more together because then they're closing quarters out like into the Singapore. When you're starting them, you can pull one early and then you can kind of play them off the bench. I thought they found a really fun lineup in that first half where they pulled, they kind of switched their hours. Tyler with Kaz, Jaime, Pella, and where. And it's a lineup

26:13that's youthful and the good thing is when the other team is missing like they were, they're fun when they get out of the run. I mean you have a bunch of guys that could score out of the open core. We know what Pella and Jaime can do in that range. Like we said, where was playing really well? Kaz was fine in this game. I thought he did some good stuff defensively. He wasn't loud offensively, but that's fine. I mean when you're not scoring like that as a rookie and you're still like not a negative, I think that's important. But I think the point is that you're able to stagger a little more. Now Tyler's kind of running with that second unit. I honestly think I like Tyler with the second unit more than I did norm with the second unit. I know they tried norm there for a while and it just didn't feel like it was the same. They didn't feel like it clicked. I like norm a little bit better when he's out there with Davian who knows how to find him. Wiggins I think plays well off him and I think BAM honestly is kind of better for him than where, just because of the way where plays around the basket and everything and the way norm is kind of locked in on scoring. He's not going to throw a ton of lobs over the top. So the point is that the starting line of thing doesn't feel like sposed saying themselves,

27:15okay, we're going to force this Tyler norm thing. I think the closing line of tonight kind of tells you is the opposite. I think he's kind of hinting at the fact that okay, we know where they are with this team. Like we talked about also in the latest episode. We did where we were, I'm like, you got to eliminate feelings. Like if you want to go win a basketball game tonight, you better make the call. Like you better just go play the guys that you think are like what Pell is my perfect example. Play him all 12 minutes of the fourth quarter because he's going to help you win that basketball game. If Norman Tyler out there to close is going to get you picked on defensively, don't play Norman Tyler to close the game. Pick one. Rolling. So yeah, I think all that stuff is important. But yeah, I think this the stem starting. I don't know if this is a long term thing, but it does balance some things out a little bit. I will say we'll see what the injury update is. I'm in because he put his ankle there that looked like maybe a spray ankle. I'm not sure that's just kind of an initial observation. So if you're losing some score in there off the bench, it obviously changes some of the conversations here. I have a theory on Tyler. I think Tyler likes playing with younger players better. His energy tends to be better.

28:21When he's playing with that, so what you were saying about how he looked better with the second unit and some of the young guys, he seems to relish sort of being the young vet with that group. I've just I just he just has a different energy. Headed with Yovic too when Yovic was actually a factor. I would lean into hero and Yaka chowness together as much as possible. I've been saying that for a few weeks now because look, if Tyler's going to be under contract next year, that's probably going to be your starting back court. I think an offseason, if Yaka chowness has the offseason that they're expecting and they put the ball on his hands more often, I would not be surprised at all if that is your starting back court next year. So because I it's just looking less and less likely than me that Norm is going to get the extension as long as Tyler's here. So I would get them on the court as much as possible. And then what happens with Tyler after that we'll see. But again, he is under contract for next year. So that's that's where I would go if I would spell a little bit more play, play Tyler with some of the young guys. I get what you're saying Brady about the staggering becoming easier. I just I don't know. I just think they're going to get run.

29:24I think I think if they're not on point with their shooting early in games and they're throwing, you know, the Davion Tyler norm thing out there, I think there'll be a lot of games they're down 12 when they come out. So tonight, the defense was good. Clever. I had one last thing really quick to to your point here. Yes. I thought like I mentioned so much the recent I but also they're driving like the guys that they depend on like you obviously you guys have already talked about Pella and how important he was for them, especially down the stretch and his driving capabilities on an off ball. But Jaime was doing his thing before he got hurt. Davion, I thought like, you know, wasn't like scoring a ton, but like you know what he does for the offense as far as somebody who gets down hill like that, they need that stuff. And I thought that worked out for them tonight. So like when you talk about these lineups with hero and pal, I feel like it's like maybe do you do you find a way to get a bigger guy in there over Davion perhaps if you want to maybe mitigate some of the size stuff, somebody else who drives for them like a Jaime or a Pella,

30:25I don't know. I don't know how much you like of the playmaking that you lose from Davion there. If you go to Jaime, I just think they have some questions there. That's not something I'm expecting because I think Jaime has a six man has been so effective for them. So I think that would cut like I'm not expecting that type of move. But if they're going to stick with hero and pal, this is more than one game thing. If they're going to stick with hero and pal in that starting unit, I wonder if this is like the final one, especially since we saw, you know, maybe this is just another one game thing, but like Wiggins getting benched down the stretch. Like if he's just another interchangeable piece, if he considers all these other guys there interchangeable pieces, I wonder how he manages the line upstairs if we get to see more of that unit. I think he sees them all as interchangeable pieces except for Bam. I really do. I think that's where we're headed. And I do think that my major takeaway from tonight is that he put Larsen on the bench and Larsen was the most impactful player on the floor. And that has to be taken forward here. He just I'm with Brady. He just has

31:29to play. If they're if they're going to try to compete, which is what we know they're trying to do. Okay. Where it goes. Who knows, but they they have to while we kind of know, but if they're going to win at game or two in the play and or if they're even going to get a shot at the 60 now, they're not that far out. They do have three tank games left. So there's an opportunity to make up. So if it's going to come down to those two games in Toronto, they're going to have to sweep them. That's pretty much where this is playing out. But if that's the case, then he has to treat everybody's interchangeable and he just has to play the guys who are playing well against the matchup that he has. That's it. There's no this team has not nobody has distinguished themselves enough. Okay, with the exception of Bam. Over the past 30 to 40 games that their ego should matter. Just shouldn't. That's just not that the way that's not the way that his boss would have done it. Riley would just play the guys that no tech man tonight. No, he didn't go with 10. Right. He didn't play didn't play Drew didn't play Garner didn't play Fontequeo didn't play Ović. So that that tells you something also. He's kind of he's kind of tightening things up
