So DodoCoffee.co code Hawkblogger 12. All right, Matt, Matt, how are you doing on this? Good morning, man. Great, man. Doing great. Well, you gave me like little homework assignment, I guess. You know what? I felt like I was pushing the limit, but I was going to ask you this question one way or another. I asked really stupid, simple questions, sometimes that are complicated. I was like, what is formations to? I have this question about formations, I have this question about alignment, I have this question about motions. And people just take it as like, oh, it's obvious, but I don't, it's not obvious to me. It's not obvious to anyone and listen, you ask great questions. I happen to be watching the Mike McDonald press conference yesterday and you ask great

questions. And Mike McDonald, the look on his face was just classic. Like you were giving him stats and he was like, I didn't know that. That's pretty good. I didn't know that. It's pretty good. I was like, I'm going to be like, I need more of this. You know, like in some way, freelance, help me with my talks to the team. He was like a cross between, I don't, I want to act like I don't care, but man, is that a cool stat you just gave me and I'm so fired up. What was it again? And he was like, Brian, every time you give me a stat, it's something I have never heard before. Like that's what he actually said. And so, yeah. So anyway, on the formation in motion thing, sometimes as an offense, we don't know for sure sometimes how it's going to screw up the defense, but we know it will. And the premise of everything that you do with personnel groupings and shifts and motions is that one or two guys, the picture will change for us, for one or two of us.

And for all 11 of you, your responsibilities changed and you had, you know, 1.1 seconds to decide how it changed set hut. And now all of a sudden, you had inside leverage on Shaheed. And now you have outside leverage on JSN set hut. And by the way, your rule and this coverage is, don't let him inside of you. Like what? Yeah, but what? Like that's not fair. And so sometimes you're very strategic and you know exactly how you're going to set him up. And it's just like shift motion, something crazy. Oh, look over there, run over here. Like it's just, it's as simple as that for us. Well, I can't wait to get into it. We can actually play the full play, but we are going to show the different plays from this game where Matt has picked, Terry picked a few to help illustrate where formations can influence a defense. Before we get into all that, I want to get you to share your high level impressions on what you saw in the game. And it's funny.

You bring up the press conference yesterday. I'm glad you had that impression. I thought Mike was like, what are you doing with all this stuff, dude? I don't know what you're talking about. I think he was impressed though. Like, you know, as someone who's probably geeked out on film and tendencies and study, like I think he's like, man, most people, most beat writers, most people that cover the team, they come in with like the same old same old. They don't even know what they're talking about half the time. And you're like super deep. Like, it kind of reminded me when I was playing of this guy, Mike Sando. You know Mike Sando. So he would ask me. He'd be like these like on these like, people like, did you know and did it and I'd be like, really? Like, I did not know that and that's fascinating. And I'm going to change that or lean into that. It's like almost helpful in a way. So I know, I know for a fact, he, the smirky gave you what you're saying. It was out of respect. It was definitely. And also kind of like, hey bro, go get a hobby.

You know, I think it was a little bit of that. Oh, it's so well. You know, it's tackling and blocking. You don't have to, you know, so. Yeah, fair enough, fair enough. All right. So, you know, see how to play the Cardinals. They play with Drew Locke. I feel like before we get into all this breakdown, we just got to talk about the number one rated passer in the NFL after two weeks, Drew Locke. He was awesome in this game. And I was a little bit critical of what I thought I saw in the first game. Like I know the stats were good, but there were things that are just non-negotiables that like weren't good. You break the huddle, you're looking back at your wristband. It just, it felt like a little bit unsure, not, not confident. The delay, game bothered me, like kind of gave the Patriots a chance to steal that game at home. And I was sick to our stomach if Drake may played like the normal Drake May. So like, I was disappointed. Now, I was equally as like excited pumped up. He played awesome. No sacks. I mean, the Hail Mary, I don't count.

That was actually the smarter play. His touch sounds were amazing. His, you know, his command of pass protection and no one wear his hot and all that stuff. Finding the go-to guy. I know for me is that when I was not the starter and I, you know, just playing with scout team receivers. And all of a sudden I get to play with like this, you know, at the end of my career, it was T.Y. Hilton and Reggie Wayne is like, oh, hey, I'm going to find T.Y. Every chance I got. That's what he did with JSN. You know, like that, that was really, really well done. He played, I mean, he played phenomenal. I thought I was really, really happy for him and the team played really well. You know, I'm curious, you know, you've been at the starter and you've been a backup that's come in, as you just said. What's the hardest part to get right? Is it, is it like, is it the timing? Is it choice routes? Is it, you know, what are the parts that's hard in that situation? No, I think the biggest thing is just seeing it from four and a half yards behind the center. Like we all sit in the, we hours and hours and hours.

You sit in a chair and you saw it on hardnoughts. You see where he sits. And he's looking up at a giant big screen and a camera that's up in section 305. And it's like, he's just seeing it from right there. And like, you just get trained. Like, I can see it from right there. I see it from right there. I see it from right there. Then all of a sudden, I'm up in here like this and I see it like that and it's just a whole different picture. It's, I don't mean to equate it to like another sport. It'd be like playing, I don't know, like left field and then second base. It's just, it's just different man. You know, you're going to make it split second decisions. And so I think that's the biggest thing. Like seeing it up close and personal, communicating it, hostile environment, which it was not. It was the opposite of a hostile environment. And I've lived that as well down there in that stadium when it's just a 12 takeover. That's awesome. It's not going to be like that all the time in every stadium. But no, I thought, I thought, I would, to be honest, after watching week one, I was

a little concerned. It felt like a little bit of like, we let some things under the rug and everyone's like, oh, yay, game ball. And I'm like, I don't know, man, you need a great week of practice as the number one quarterback. Sam's got to help you with his little nuggets. The coaches got to like maybe bring it down a little bit so that you can play fast and he did. You know, I, I think you're, you're on to something there because when we had the press conference with Drew Locke last Thursday, he did not seem like Drew. He was, he was a little hesitant. He was almost like, you know, acknowledging how, how much is going on and how different this is. And it came out after the game that they had just gone through walk through where he had gone through all the Arizona looks, the pressure looks they might get. And he was feeling like he was swimming. And then he went up and talked to Sam. Sam kind of talked him through things and he said, it made a huge difference.

And he played so fast in this game and the throws he made were throws that you have to just rip it. Like those were not throws you just like timidly can put in there. Like, do you know like as a quarterback, when you're having like one of those games or is it just you reach a point where you can do that time and time again? Is it like a picture who's on? Is it like, how does it feel? Well, you know, there's plays that you have comfort zone with. Like, you know, I mentioned for me, I like, I like five receivers out. I don't like max protection. I don't like eight man protections and two guys in the row. I don't love that. That's not my, it's not my, that's not what I love. And some quarterbacks are with me. Some guys might feel different. I noticed like when, when Arizona was going all out blitz, the C-OX were five guys out. We're in scat protection. The only people staying into block are our O-Line men. That's it. Ball's coming out on time somewhere. And I think Drew Locke just like what I know of him from college and his, where he came from and how he was trained and how he plays, you know, Mike McDonald talks about we want

our quarterbacks to be themselves and play their style of game. Like that's what it is. Like, you know, give me the ball and let me find somebody quick and get it out. And maybe I backped a little bit this way and maybe I do it a little side arm and got a little bit of gun slinger type stuff. Like that's fine. And that's how he played. So I credit the coaches for understanding who they had probably, you know, going through the week, I've had it where a Thursday where I feel like, oh man, this is like, this is a lot. What they do is a lot. And when the defense does a lot, you know, maybe we just simplify it. You know, the first touchdown of the game was incredible. It was like, here's a play that everybody runs in their first 15. Usually their first pass is like a tight end stick route or maybe a quick out route. Just give me a second and five. And you know that Arizona has their eyes in the backfield like the trap coverage and boot of bakers, a playmaker and he's kind of flat footed and number two's eyes in the backfield. And what are we going to do? We're going to go back to high school. We're going to run hitch, hitch and go slant slant go out, out and up.

That's it. And just to get him comfortable second and six or something like that, we go pretend that's a why stick to a royal out and up to JSN. If it's a long foul ball, it's a long foul ball, but we're sending a message. And if not, we got an 82 yard touchdown. Like it just was a great way to simplify it for a quarterback and yet still be aggressive. We're on offense. You're not. And we're going to play that way. And I thought it was great. I mean, all of it was great, really. All right. So we've got a few plays to go through and I want to make sure we have time to do it. A tight Matt Haselback, Seahawks legend, Ring of Honor member. And the question at hand is like, what do formations do? And let's take a look here at our first view. This is a play that went to receipt to heed and talk us through what you see here, Matt. Yeah. So it's a second quarter. I think it's first and 10. And your question was, what do formations do?

Well, it's it's it's it's not just formations. It's personal group and it's it's personal group. It's it's formations. It shifts and it's motions. And so like when you're a defender and you go into a game plan week, you get all these sheets of just this of where they're lined up and who they are. And when you're in the NFL, you never really talk about names. You talk about numbers. And so basically what the starting point is this pre snap look, it tells you really doesn't really matter. This is just a starting point, but it gives it it is a starting point. So the quarterbacks under center, the wise off the ball. I believe that's collar up. That's 89. And so there's a lot of things we can do from that formation, but but let's just see where it goes. And now let's decide. I mean, they're basically anticipating a run to the field, probably under center, but like it could be a pass, but let's see. So let this run until the run to the field explain that for folks. So like when you're on the hash, there's boundary runs and there's field runs.

And so the boundary, this is like the short side of the field. The defense thinks, hey, you know what, we don't have to have a strong of a defensive structure on this side because they've got less open field. It's like a shorter. If the field is 53 and one thirds wide, if we're over here on the left hash, then this is the short side of the field. The up top would be the wide side of the field. And so that's where you see the safety coming down. I think that's that's three. That's that's boot of Baker. If he's coming down outside, that that that means that outside linebacker's probably knifing inside not really where you want to be, but but we'll see. I mean, you just don't know they could do anything at this point. So let's run the motion. It's obviously single high too many guys in the box. Blah, blah, blah. We don't really care about that though. Okay, so here comes Barner, Posit right when Barner gets outside the right tackle. And essentially like a big tendency a big tendency in the NFL is for inside an outside zone.

Like I would we would call this I would call this is like inside zone Aussie would be outside zone. This would be inside zone for me. And I would it's is is is inside zone is Z if it ends in why that why tight end the tight end the why they call him. He's going to slice back and block the defensive end on the other side. So here we're under center. We got Nick cholera we got AJ Barnard. These are our blocking tight ends. We are sending a message. We are running a downhill inside or outside zone with slicers coming back tight ends coming back hard run action. Like this is everything about this tells me run. The Cardinals they're thinking run there's they're thinking run to the field either way they got a gap for a gap. We're going hard action under center. I mean everything looks run to me. This is the it's elephants on a parade in a sense with the line coming hard. This to the left. We got our tight ends going hard to the right. And the you know this is just a classic zone scheme run where we're going to give it to Jadarian price.

And he's going to take his strong angle like outside leg of where the tight end was lined up pre snap and just hit it one cut downhill. And not a kept not a cut back a cut forward. And and that's what it is. It's just a hard downhill run. And we disguise the formation by making it look like it may be a pass. And then but no it's a run with you know it's a it's a zone run with the tight ends coming back. So this is the play action except it's not a run it looks like a run. So look at like look at all the underneath coverage like everybody's up there the line is like they're all up there. And you've created this glance route which is like a five step slant route under control to your receiver Shahid there. And then backside if it's not there call a break route like a corner seven stopper corner stop into a curl route for JSN and then barner is going to have a you know check release out into the flat.

So you have a triangle a one to your glance a two to your break route a three to your tight end three eligible receivers. And really the hardest run action that you got with with formation motion and action. Pretty pretty awesome and you know it's it was a I think this is like a 23 yard gain on first and 10. When you know it's it's really you know the quarterbacks got us back to the defense the whole time there's really nothing to read other than a progression read which is just I don't care what the coverage is one to three. So formation on that play mat was so formation started in a three by one meaning three eligible receivers on one side. And then JSN on the other side now with JSN on the other side you got a kind you can just leave him one on one. But so this is another part that I think the sea oxen Brian Flurry where I'm really excited about I think they do an amazing job. A lot of time to hear people on commentators on TV talk about oh this was 12 personnel you know one running back two tight ends.

What's so cool about the sea hawks it's like well which 12 personnel is it barner and in color up is it is it a rollo and so I like is it what variation is it is it Brady Russell and a rollo is it Brady Russell and Barner. And so it gets very confusing this is one of things that I think Sean Payton has done in his career better than anybody he's got like 40 different variations of personnel groupings and so when you try to have a simple defense in a game plan. You know it's it's just a it's an example of. Just the mental gymnastics that these guys have to do on defense it's not just like sea ball get ball. Alright so let's queue up the next one here this one is this is a play to Elijah a rollo. Okay so yeah so this you know I chose this one because this is an example of one that like didn't work so we come out and we have basically 13 personnel so we have three tight ends in the game and we're in pistol and everything about this should say this is a run or that's what we think as an offense like we're thinking this we're going to show you three tight ends we're going to we're in pistol we're going to run the ball it's going to be something like that.

And I believe this is a play action where we're doing the same thing in a rollo has that same glance or out that she's she ran. But the Cardinals don't take the they don't take the cheese they don't take the bait they're not falling for it so the formation though this would be like strong right. Why off so like in your mind you're thinking run or you're thinking that they're thinking run or play action naked bootleg type thing so then I think is their motion here I think you need to go to the motion if there's motion there may or may not be there's motion so now we went for it so the strength is down to the right everybody all three tight ends now we go quick motion now the strength is to the left and so instead of king formation this is now queen formation where it's the state. Where it's the strength is left yet that extra tight end full back type next to the pistol quarterback he's on the other side so like now actually pause you there so what does that do so you've got the tight end now to the left you know partner there and you've got sobert here to the right and you still have a rollo here split out what what what are you trying to do with so every really everything like the day one starting point for every offense and defense strength is to the tight end.

They call them the why tight end why do they call them the why tight end I have no idea that everyone is just the why tight end he's the tight he's the main tight end so if you say right it's strength right you know like when I would break the huddle when I break the huddle when I was playing for the sea ox I break the huddle the first guy lock eyes with was low foot to two put the middle line backer he's supposed to say strong left strong right all he's really looking for usually is the tight end which side did he go to and where's the strength. Now there are some variations of that like the tight ends on one side three receivers on the other side they might call passing strength but it's really all about the tight end strength and that sets the front the detackle knows like okay if it's strong right I'm the one technique or the three technique like everything's that's like everybody starting point on the tight end that's why a why motion across the ball from one side right to left or left to right is kind of great it changes the picture for the why tight end.

It's different for him but not really different for anybody else on offense but everybody's rules just changed on defense and it's like 1.1 seconds set up. Now you got to think and you know that's really that's really what you're always trying to try to make them think so it slows them down. Okay so this is the snap and like you said they're they're a play action here at a pistol which is also kind of which I think we got a little too cute you know other people run a lot at a pistol and all this but like it looks great on a you know it looks good you know but unless you really really do it do it like it. I think it's a great idea it didn't work basically. Okay so what didn't work. Well just look look look at the defense look at the defense from that first play that I showed where it's under center like we've seen it the safety's are deep the linebackers aren't driving. They're still five yards deep like they didn't really take the cheese here didn't feel like it's it this looks like a play action this doesn't look like a run everybody's you know standing up a little bit more.

So it's a good job by the defense it's a pretty good job by the defense like they don't they don't take the cheese and they play there they play the place so like positive right here this is what I love we're going to create the same kind of like. Glance route to a rollo in this situation it was she he'd last time it's not really open like it's I mean it is but it isn't in in in in. Drew lock here just absolutely cuts it loose with confidence here's an example of a rollo's not really been a starter drew locks not really been a starter they probably have all kinds of these throws together. And he's just like that's my guy I trust my guy I know what he's being taught fifth outside step or whatever you know my fifth step i'm going to boom i'm going to cross the safety's face you throw that thing with confidence and here we go so. If you know what happens he cuts it loose in this look it's a great catch to a big target doesn't extend him to I but puts it right where it's a you know catching get down.

And I in a great first down for for Seattle here on a play that really. Arizona covered they covered really well. One thing i just call out here is like what is this safety doing what. Well so that's the thing so like you rally so once you see like you kind of like drop your weight like is it a run no it wasn't a run rally and go rally and retreat you know it's probably a play action he's afraid of JSN and so like if he's going deep like those those guys there's fear think about what happened early in this game they got beat for an 82 yard touchdown like because you didn't have your corners back. You know so like hey listen no matter what happens we can't give up the big one. You know this was a tight game for a long time so but this is just it's the opposite field safety who's driving down. Yeah and they yeah and they you can yeah you mix and match that like to try to be. You know creative and so and especially with someone like JSN I think that's the probably the hardest thing for the sea sea ox this year will be.

You're going to see coverages that you've never seen in film study because it's going to be their JSN plan and so you're going to have to see it in real time on the field get on the sideline go to the Microsoft. Surface as it's called Tom Brady and then make the adjustments. Yeah crazy here you could just see between you know three defenders to make that happen and can I just tell you like from my. Experience it's easier to throw that pass to a big a royal guy than a she he'd so like you might think like oh it's a receiver easier to throw to play like that no the big body target and that's something that the rams I think accidentally fell into last year with their wide receiver injuries they played all the 13 personnel. I think staffer really gotten a rhythm throwing to their giant tight ends in situations like that. Okay so we had two more if you got time for those let's do this one here this is a manual Wilson and this is I think just a.

I thought this I thought this kind of broke their back a little bit broke their will I think make sure I got the right one is the right one yeah I think that that's probably right so listen like this this what's interesting to me about this one and. You could probably I don't know if you got the end zone copy of this but this is a strong right slot so we're like you know it's 12 personnel sorry it's it's is this is this is 13 personnel 13 personnel so one back three tight ends but like which tight ends like who is in the game to me is it get a run this play maybe I'm maybe I'm maybe I'm the wrong one I think this is the one that's why I want to make sure you get the right one this is this is the one. That we wanted to get so hold on one second Matt will get cute up for you I will get that cute up and we'll come back to it so this is the the one where this is you had it with 933 to go yeah so this yeah so to me this was I think this was the tendency breaker one that that's talking to you about yes exactly like you can get into a you can get into a thing like okay well it's when it's Nick and AJ in there is probably a run when a row of

the players in there is like probably not so there's I think I think Florida's this great thing where it's not so much what I can't do it's what he can do and so if this is yeah so we start out in two tight ends this is two tight ends to the left there's one receiver on each side and so the strength is right and then if you roll it it's kind of like the first play where it's a three by one and then all the sun it's a two by two. So roll it to the end of the motion where the motion guy gets to the right tackle so it's the same thing under center so positive right there so so you got a receiver to the right you can kind of see you got a receiver to the left this is kind of this similar thing but it's 12 personnel not with our big blockers so I believe that's a Royo 18 to our right now and so we're going to give him a block on a running play but it's not a point of attack block you know that's not his strength is more like a receiver than a blocker and so we're going to give him a backside block. And then the tight end who's coming across here I believe that's 81 you know this is a he's a decent blocker but not a he's not AJ he's not Nick so like we're going to give him a point of attack block but we also have a young right garden right now you know we got we got the kid from my own 70 both Stevens and so what are we going to what's he really good at the just man you don't have to think too much come off the ball with the right tackle and we're going to just double team you got that and then the tough job we're going to.

And then we're going to put on the left guard here who's going to be our puller so this is basically like a one back power without a traditional fullback we're going to get a two guys down on a double team guard around and then we're using 12 personnel but what 12 personnel to me a tendency breaker 12 personnel where we're going to have guys with him you know they're not the most important blocks on on the play so then if you just pause it like yeah like right there look at this. Awesome double team the motion helps the tight end 81 get his block over here and create some space we're going to create a backside a royal like dude like you know that's a great job but like it's kind of you know you're not the point of attack we're not going to ask you to do it's kind of like with the Saints used to do with Jimmy Graham with the chiefs used to do a Travis Kelsey like that kind of a mindset and now our guard our first rounder 76 is pulling around for 50. I know you can't run the play but you can kind of run it and see like maybe like one more like right there so we've got created all this space we got a great double team. Number one the linebackers kind of like his visions block but the right tackles got eyes on him because he can come off the.

The double team the the running back here he can go weak side a gap he could go front side and follow your guard I like hugging the double team and following your guard and that's exactly what he does now 28 here this is where I think the C.O.X. I think the C.O.X. is really improved 28 here his job is to come make this tackle our wide receivers and we got speed guys if you can come down and crack block on this guy now we're going to have a manual Wilson on your corner and corners you know despite what Deon Sanders says like they they don't like to tackle and maybe Dion does say they don't like to tackle I don't know but like either way that's the goal of every running play at the end is that the running back has to be a zone blocker for one guy and we love it when it's the corner. And if corners get dinged up they don't they really don't want to tackle so you make them tackle a bunch in a game and you know they just stop trying after a while. So he ends up taking it out here he takes it out here because that's his guy that's the running backs guy so every running back when he's studying his plays they're like the coach will say to him like okay who's my guy coach who's the guy we're not blocking who's the guy I got to make miss and it's usually if we do it right safety or we would prefer.

So in that case it was the corner and you know I think the corner whiffed and I mean Wilson went right by him so that was a that was just that I thought a great example of we're in a certain person we're in the personnel group you 12 personnel you think you know us and you think it's a pass and it's it's not is a downhill double team. Grace able pulling around like we're going to punch you in the mouth kind of play. All right last one and then we'll get you out of here you're being very generous through time today appreciate I know you're super busy. So this was 1125 to go a running play. Yeah let me let me pull it up. I didn't think you're going to pull this one up this one's like almost harder to explain it's so awesome though it's like so awesome like. You want end zone or sideline view. Can we start sideline and then go end zone is that cool yes yes absolutely so that's the other thing if you're a quarterback you always do it that way you watch sideline and then you.

You know you study it and then you go to the end zone for the details now if you're an alignment you never watch this you ever like never you just watch the tight copy and and I don't know how to do it they're like geniuses because I need to see the whole picture. I prefer to yeah so okay so this is just you're like you're. You know I guess we call Brady a fullback so this is just your 20 you know you're sorry you're yeah you're 21 21 yeah so this is like strong right why off tight split up top so if it's a if the receiver to the tight end is tight you call it close if the receiver to away from the tight end is tight you call it nasty if they're both tight you call it dirty and so this would be strong right off dirty. So strong right the why is off dirty that's the formation so what do people like to do in this in the run can I can I pause you for a second. Just we talked about the NFL has moved a lot to these like condensed formations and this is like such a good example of like how condensed this is why what what is having the receiver so tight to the line to the ball do.

Well they can go get those safety easier in the block in the running game which is and then make your corners have to be near the box and have to tackle that's one thing another thing there's way more room for them to run out routes if you're outside the numbers here it's like not as easy to run an out route the corner can use the sideline as an extra defender but now what some people do with hard play action they move the launch point move the pocket. These wide receivers can run routes on the other side of the field like literally the receiver down here at the bottom could catch the ball like on that other 40 up top you know he can run all the way over there catch a ball like I'm the zero of the 40 over there or the receiver down top he could run all the way down here and catch the ball to the left of the four over here like that's a long way to now you're covering non traditional routes like we do one on ones at practice there's like an unbeatable. This is like an unwritten rule you're not allowed to run to the other side of the field because it's just it's too hard to cover just like an unwritten rule you would never in one on one to have a route let's just shallow route like you're never allowed to run to the other side of the field and they say like all you're not going to have that much time to get it off well with the max protection protection type thing you you certainly could but in this situation in the game I believe this is like we're winning late in the game or how kind of having our way this to me screams.

We're going to go outside toss right like out it's like because the we look at our strength we're going to so I don't know if there's motion on this play or not probably as a return motion. I'll skip up a little bit see if we get any motion. Yeah so okay so they're going to do that whole thing like we're going to change so they do do the change is this the plan let me just see it. Is this the wrong place is the right this is the right play they just they just they took it like to the next level this is so amazing. So sometimes sometimes you run away from like if teams want to slant to the tight end or they want to do something you just you'll do run game away from the tight end so here go back to the beginning of this play and maybe you could just go to the the tight copy the end zone copy. TV in TV we got the high end zone towards copy so the high end zone off it's just coming towards you so here we're going to give the illusion pre snap that we're running to the right outside now this linebacker over here he's given a signal to his guy over there like hey.

Something the guy you know it's might be coming back here who knows they're thinking that's the point of it okay so let the motion go all the way across and stop it when he gets across. I think it's right around hold on. Get it was he already here. I'm sorry I need my reading go turn 51 here Friday Brian and. Oh look at it right now reading glasses. I hear you dude alright so here is tied in the top so he's coming across to no sweat like we made Sean Alexander ran more week side Mac strong leading kind of toss plays than anybody that when I was playing there's like what we did okay so we're going to go toss right everybody watch the line go to our left they're going to go hard left look at we're on the left hash look where everybody ends up now Brady Russell he's slicing back secretly now drew locks going to do this thing I don't know if they did this on purpose. It's crazy I watch it like five times I'm like what oh they missed just screwed it up I'm like wait a second I think this when the when linebacker see the ball get pitched.

I think they like it's pitch here we go let's go I'm taught I'm trained I see the ball pitch so I would love to know was this on purpose if it was it was awesome and if it wasn't I'm even dying laughing even harder like it's so good so he pitches it and look at the line the lines all going hard the left tackle is now inside where the center snap the ball so the left tackles inside where the center snap the ball we are like full on running to our to the offense is the offense is running to the right to such our left and now we're pitching it and then watch this cut back with the lead blocker who came back I guess we got to just do still shots but like now look at this whole the left tackle is now he's almost to the right hash shut it down and we've got a blocker coming back on the safety and our running back like this to me is a coach play where they designed and then look at this

school like it is just it is so well done now listen like the next the next level of this is if we can get a safety and this is where like I think people saw the value in a Jake Bobo and you know even foster like the guys who were willing and able to get down in block safeties that's when explosive runs become home run touchdown runs and you get a you know you get somebody on three right there and we're and then we're kind of again one guy to one guy to make a tackle on it. So it's a corner we're out the gate. That's those are just really good. I mean it just when your keys lied to you as a defender you just sit there and you're like like come on man. So what's your take a last thing for you. What's your take on Brian Flurry through two games like what what your instincts right now like obviously it's still early but what do you see in I think he's got he's got defensive coordinators way off balance because they don't know him and it shows and he's and he's got a which is a wealth of experience that we don't maybe know about and you know you might think like oh it's from the 49ers and it might be from the dolphins you know it might be from when he was with Ben Johnson or Mike Mcdonald you don't you don't even know and so they don't know and so I think after four weeks that's when it's they're going to have a feel but at the same time he's going to have a feel for his personnel like a Royale is getting unlocked here

Brady Russell is becoming a Kyle use check like he may not be the you know the punishing you know Robbie Uts type guy but man he is he is like a coach on the field and that's what that's what the Niners have been so good at being versatile with a fullback doing all these different things so I don't know it's it's really encouraging and I don't think like all the like I don't think I don't think we've seen all of what we're going to see from Cooper Cup I don't think we've seen all of what we're going to see from Rashida Rashida I think there's more in the tank for for those guys to it's been kind of the JSN show but it doesn't it doesn't need to be you know especially when people make the adjustments so I'm encouraged I think it's I think it's falling the right way now listen this next game whatever they're playing with their backup quarterback you know the be the same kind of thing it's going to get a lot harder after that it's going to get a lot harder after that well comment here from Joseph Muldoon who I think captures it for everybody says just wanted to jump in and say thanks to both Brian and Matt you guys are making us all better fans and Matt and I were talking before the show he's like I don't know how how like geeky you want me to get with this and I'm like I'm pretty sure people want full geek with with you Matt so this has been great I didn't never thought I'd be doing run game like this I mean definitely the high school coaching is turning me into a run game lover I've never done it with still shots to like that but that that was pretty good you did a good job with the

work in the controller there so appreciate I appreciate I wish I could just play it out but the NFL does not allow it yeah and it's I'll just tell you like when you watch a play when you're when you're on a team you watch in plays I bet you you hit forward and back as a coach on each play I'm going to guess at times 45 times like 35 to 45 times forward back forward back it's basically a still shot you're just seeing that first step first step back first step back and then and then it progresses so it's really not that much different from how you actually studied the film well it's it's amazing to me one of the things I love and I know I need to get a hobby but the amount of the amount of work that goes in and the amount of times watching those plays practicing for that like split second moment for the block to actually be in the right place the right time or to fool the person in the right way to get their eyes looking in one specific spot open one window for one split second part of what I love about the sport it's it's amazing how much goes into it well can can you also see though how you can kind of get lost in the forest as a coach yes when you get up in there and you're like okay we got why mode a soft right nasty fake is he left

X gland Z break you know why so slide like and then all of a sudden like just some person you just sit in there with a with a Bud Light and they're like hey man why would keep doing that you know because like you you just you get a little bit to tunnel vision and you're forgetting like hey we haven't thrown a deep once in the last two quarters like we need to take a shot and so like that happens that's why like trust in each other communicating on the headset someone having the courage to hit the button and be like hey man just a reminder yesterday we said we're gonna take a shot a quarter you know we haven't done that you know like having the communication and the trust because you can get so locked into this like like just oh he's an inch here and he's an inch there and we'll trick him and it's at the end of the day man like you got to so you still got to just play free and play fast and I think they're doing that right now all right Matt Hasselbeck with us every Tuesday man it was great have a great rest of your day and good luck with all the packing okay thanks Brian see all right that was Matt Hasselbeck with us every Tuesday and we'll be with

Annabelle Hasselbeck tonight at five o'clock for CX collective so we'll have some fun with her and Rob Staten as well there and I hope you guys enjoyed that like I wish we could just do more film study in general trying to find some ways obviously Pemco did a really nice thing for us before and sponsor to show where we could do a you know no YouTube ads episode and have it you know actually play the film I think we might be able to do that again we'll try to try to figure that out but I just think part of what I want for this show and for all of us is to not just you know talk at the high level but to to learn a little bit of what we're watching I personally don't want to learn so much that it becomes like you know burdensome like I don't want this to be a science project I still want it to be special and you know kind of mysterious in that regard but I think Matt does a great job of like helping us learn a little bit more about something is simple as a formation for why things work

the way that they do so uh that was Matt House of Back and let's do this um I've got some actually some corrected numbers for you guys that you're going to want to hear about what's going on with Brian Flurry's offense we talked about the 13 personal yesterday that wasn't it I was right there was a problem with the information and I'm going to tell you some stuff that I think is pretty fascinating on the other side of this first let's hear from our sponsors you Chevy is called the heartbeat of America for a reason with SUVs made to move with your rhythm the versatile equinox tackles your entire day the spacious traverse fits your crew and your whole weekend and tracks bring style with value you can count on all infused with tech that has your back so your drive always hits the right chord

of 13 personnel in this game and um uh it turns out that uh I was like this is seems wrong because I'm not getting as much of the 21 as I expected because I saw Brady Russell in there plenty doing fullback things well one I will not out which data vendor had Brady Russell listed as a tight end but they did and I've now reported it to him as a bug so it was in all of their data not just the data I was pulling everybody was getting the wrong information about sea ox personnel they're gonna fix that but I fixed it in the meantime and re-racked what the personnel usage has been it's a very different picture than what we described yesterday turns out that what has really jumped from last year to this year through two games it's only two games is 21 personnel it is

use of the fullback they went from 14 percent fullback usage last year to 29 percent basically doubled more than doubled sorry more than doubled their usage of 21 usage of the fullback this year versus last year this was one of the things I was super fascinated in where Kyle Shanahan we talked about this a lot during the offseason the personnel group that the sea hawks excelled with was 12 personnel two tight ends right that was their bread and butter with Clint Kubiak Kyle Shanahan their bread and butter was 21 personnel with a fullback with Kyle use check we just heard Matt Hasselbeck talk about how they're using Brady Russell a little bit like Kyle use check well turns out what not only did Kyle Shanahan live in 21 do a lot of fullback plays but they were like top in the NFL in EPA per play and efficiency out of 21 so the sea ox were not good last year when

they had a fullback on the field either running or passing they just didn't do that well out of that formation well fast forward to this year with Brian Flurry they're using it twice as often it is their second most used personnel group okay so their first most used is 11 at 33 percent this is also something that's different now that we've got the the actual numbers down um second most common is 21 with Brady Russell in there at fullback or a fullback the third most common is 12 that's with two tight ends that's 23.7 percent so figure 33 29 24 the thing that's interesting about that is that is a very tight distribution of different personnel groups 11 21 12 you're basically a third a third a third a third like not exactly but kind of close they've also done 22 personnel to like a fullback and to

tight end they've done that 10 percent of the time that's roughly they did that about a little bit less than that but around the same last year 13 personnel pretty much the same as it was last year 4.4 percent versus 3.3 so 13 has not been that big of a change but what this all nets out to is they're doing three wide receivers a lot less they've gone from 42 percent three receivers to 33 percent so far that's a drop of nine percentage points they've gone up on 21 a fullback usage 15 points 14.6 percent like absolute percent then 12 a little bit less they're down about 4 percent there a little bit of an increase in 22 with a fullback and two tight ends and a little bit of an increase in 13 personnel but how are they doing out of these different personnel groups

that's just distribution of usage they are really struggling out of 11 they are significantly EPA per play out it with three wide receivers then they were a year ago that's something I'm curious about something I'm going to talk to mr. Flurry and others about and get their perspectives they are better they are better significantly better I would say in 21 personnel they are now a positive EPA per play team in 21 personnel with a fullback last year they were a negative EPA per play team when they were in 21 personnel 12 personnel they've gone from good to even better they were plus point two oh EPA per play last year out of two tight end plays they're at plus point three four this year that's a huge jump so they're even better but then get this now it's a small sample

size it's only 11 plays but when they have run 22 with a fullback and two tight ends they have a plus point six nine eight EPA per play that is insane that's an insane number that is not a sustainable number they will not stay at that level but last year they were a negative point one three so to go from negative to positive is great to go to plus you know point you know six nine eight is kind of crazy so let me show you a little bit here I think I think these numbers are accurate let me share with you guys whoops not that let me stop screen and start and let me share these numbers with you okay so if I put this on screen for you guys what you can see here is

what I was just talking about in terms of 11 personnel and utilization there but you could see the ranks of their EPA per play 25th an EPA per play 23rd an EPA per pass 28th an EPA per rush they're not doing well with three receivers you go to 12 personnel they're doing pretty good number three an EPA per play number two an EPA per pass not so great and run 19th an EPA per rush okay but I do like that they're roughly a 50 50 pass run rate when they're doing that 13 personnel they're not using it very often and in fact below league average they're not doing very well when they do it 20th an EPA per play 22nd an EPA per rush 12th an EPA sorry 12th 22nd an EPA per pass 12th an EPA per rush okay like the rush is okay but it's interesting that there is 60 percent pass rate out of that

that's kind of wild but then 21 personnel this is the one that I'm really focused on here folks league average is 7.8 percent they're at 29 percent usage their number six in the NFL an EPA per play number three an EPA per pass and number seven an EPA per rush they are passing only 30 percent of the time so this is a heavy run formation for them a personnel group but they are running it well when they do and they are passing extremely well so that's me like the dream here I think to some extent with Brian Flurry is that you could take your 12 personnel prowess that you had last year and add another personnel group to it that was also really good and it's looking early on like they've done that or like they're on track to do that I think that's really really cool and you see the 22 there's again very small sample size they're using it far more than the league

average but they're number one in the NFL an EPA per play number one an EPA per pass number two an EPA per rush so I do I am curious how much they're going to look at two backs two tight ends is something that they do a little bit more often than they've done in the past so I don't know maybe too many numbers for everybody but these are the things that catch my attention and I think are a really big deal and I wanted to share it with all of you I know we've got some super chats I'll get to that I also have heard from a number of folks that like the beginning of the streams are getting cut off on YouTube I don't know what's going on nothing literally nothing's changed on my side I've also heard from some folks that if you that they eventually get added or if you go back to the beginning they're there I don't know I'll try to keep monitoring that but sorry for folks that are having that experience there's literally nothing I can do to change it I wish I could but I

cannot so sorry about that also want to make sure you go to patreon.com slash hawk blogger that will get you ad free audio will always be the full audio for that and without ads which I know a lot of people are looking for also gets you access to the discord server somebody was having some challenges getting access to the discord server connecting their patreon to discord I'll help where I can I'll just let folks know that's a patreon thing so like you might need to reach out and times if you have issues with what's working or not working make sure you check with patreon support it's their product that that makes it work or not work all right what else what else we missing so tonight we'll have see us collective tomorrow I will get into first look so I'll be working on my tail the tape comparing those thing comparing the teams looking ahead at the commanders Wednesday we will have real hawk talk Thursday we'll be back with quandary digs Friday we'll have Mike sando again Saturday we'll have real Jeff Simmons for see us Saturday so we're kind of into

our flow actually I don't know Saturday if we will be able to do that because I will be on a flight to dc yeah we might have to might have to figure something else out for Saturday but I appreciate you guys being patient with me is when I'm traveling figuring out how to fit these shows in on travel days can be a little bit of a challenge I can't believe I did it 365 straight days that was I don't know how I did that but I did um quickly just some thoughts on on the Rams game last night because I know folks were interested in what went on there you know what a shame the jackson dark got hurt so early I think it would have been a more interesting game and then yet Malik neighbors go out and james winston is just really not bad not a good not incredible backup quarterback I mean if you don't appreciate drew lock before you watched any of that game you should now I mean the difference

between drew lock and james winston I mean night and day in terms of how they could run their offense what it looked like I mean the throw is he was missing it was just at that point it didn't matter and I'll say this like I never I never really believe that the Rams weren't going to be good so you know that was always going to be the case but let me show you guys one more thing um I woke up this morning and checked out my power rankings which um update every day um when there's new data and look at look at this look at this this is now oh let's do it this way this is now the power rankings uh and again these are just data driven this is not me making my own choices but it's got Seattle at one it's got San Francisco at two and it's got the Rams at three

so I mean I think this is real I do I mean I think Buffalo Kansas City Jacksonville like a lot of these teams deserve to be part of the conversation but ultimately I think it's going to come down to these three teams and if you break it down a little bit further um see ox or number six in offensive rank their number one in defensive rank the 49ers are second in offensive rank and seventh in defensive rank the Rams are eighth in offense and fifth in defense now keep in mind this is using because it's only two weeks 35% of the data here is from last year so because it's early in the year it is pulling in some of last year's data to to drive these things and so that helps the Rams quite a bit but you can also see you know look at the Seahawks any per attempt that basically is

is passurating but it takes sacks into account and the Seahawks are doing really really well in that regard this is looking at how they're doing offensively and defensively the net rush EPA and the net points per game so Seahawks are second best and point differential the 49ers are first and then there's a schedule adjustment here um so yeah I just thought that was that was wild um I highly encourage you check this out this is available for everybody you can go to stats.hawkbucker.com personally if I were you I would look at these things I would go to the team grid which no one else has this I'm giving it away for free man um but this is like a really really cool place to just see a bunch of things about how teams are going so if you wanted to say okay EPA per play versus success rate who's doing the best this is an offensive view of the world right and if you want to highlight where Seattle is you can just click on them up here and it'll show you where they are

um in the list right uh you can also say well let's see defensively EPA per play allowed and success rate allowed who's doing well there look at the Raiders look at the Raiders all the way up there defensively um Seattle up there as well the Bengals the Patriots the Jets the Steelers the Vikings so anyway you can look at all sorts of stuff you can look at how things are people are doing explosive rush explosive rushes and explosive passes let's look at um who is the most explosive offense and you see the bills are in a league by themselves in terms of what's going on uh there so anyway I can play around with this all day and sometimes I do um uh let's quickly look at explosive uh allowed uh see how the defenses are doing in in that and you see the Seahawks again they've not given up an explosive

pass all year um and are still doing pretty well with not allowing too many explosive rushes so lots of fun stuff play around with it enjoy it stats.hawkblogger.com okay super chats ss Donna Burton says how is Dante Fowler doing learning Mike's defense? I think Dante's learned the defense I don't think that's going to be a challenge for him he's got enough vets around him he's a vet he's he's fine I thought he had a better game he had a couple pressures in this one looped around on a a twist stunts and and got some pressure on under cubby brosette so um yeah um looking forward to seeing more Dante Fowler and uh we'll see as we chart preview in this game against commanders who he played for a few years ago um how that goes um all right that will do it for this episode of hawkblogger mornings hopefully you enjoyed it I certainly did have a great rest.
