We are learning new details about the man who stormed the White House Correspondents' dinner, guns blazing, sparking a major security scare in Washington, D.C. Let's go to Marley Hogan who is right there in Washington for the latest developments. Marley, the president has described the shooter as a lone wolf. Not good morning at this stage investigators do believe that this suspected shooter acted on his own. They believe that he was likely targeting the US president and other high-profile members of the Trump administration. Now, they are basing that on writings that they found. The US president called it a manifesto. They've also been going through electronic messages. But the Acting Attorney General has said that that is their preliminary findings that they are still trying to piece together exactly what drove this man to come here to this hotel and try to get into that ballroom. Now, what has happened is this 31-year-old
who has been accused of charging a secret service security checkpoint and trying to run through the ballroom where this event was taking place. Now, while he charged that security checkpoint, he did open fire, exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. The man was tackled through the ground and taken into custody. The sound of those gunshots sent people inside that ballroom into a panic. They were ducking for cover under tables, hiding, trying to figure out what was going on. A secret service swept that room. The US president was very quickly evacuated from the stage. The first lady as well, the vice president. There were so many high-profile members of the Trump administration inside that event, along with hundreds of political journalists. The president left here, went to the White House and gave a press briefing about what took place. Take a listen. Malania was very cognizant, I think, of what happened. I think she knew immediately what
happened. She was saying, that's a bad noise. And we were whisked away. They seemed to think he was a lone wolf. And he's a sick person, a very sick person. Now what we know about the suspect, his name is Cole Thomas Allen, 31-years-old from California Police have been searching his hotel room here. They believe he was a guest. They've also searched his home in California as well. They say that he was armed with a handgun, a shotgun, a knives, and that he purchased those firearms legally. They know that he caught a train from California to Chicago, then Chicago down to Washington. They're speaking with family members. People that knew him as they try to piece together exactly what drove him to do this.
