Guinea's Doumbouya Shuts Down 40 Political Parties

0:00On March 9th, here's the latest in global news. Guinea's government just shut down the headquarters and local offices of 40 political parties. President Mamedi Dumboya, a former Special Forces commander who grabbed power in a 2021 coup, issued the order after winning a seven-year term last December. The Ministry of Territorial Administration says the parties fail to file financial statements and meet other legal requirements. Many of those groups insist they followed all the rules and are now protesting the move. Main opposition leader Saliu Dallin Dialo called it an open declaration of war on Dumboya's rivals. From exile, he urged Guinea's to mount direct resistance, saying real change won't come through talks or elections. Dialo's party got hit, along with the one tie to former President Alpha Kandai, whom Dumboya ousted. Both leaders are living abroad amid the crackdown.
