Guardians' bullpen depth being put to the test already in training camp

1:11Hoynes, the guardians yesterday go out to Glendale and really put it to the white socks in a spring training game. They come away with a 12-3 win. Home runs from CJ Keifas, Lon Tolentino and Carter Keyboom as the Cleveland collected 16 hits in the game. And Tanner Bobby goes four innings looking pretty good there. Would you take away from yesterday's game in Glendale against the white socks? Yeah, Bobby really look good. Joe probably is best start of the spring. First guardians pitcher to go four innings, four scoreless, one hit, four walks, in 46 pitches through about 62% of those pitches for strikes, which is just about average. But you know, and he was working with the lead right out of the gate. Guardians jumped. Chicago starter Shane Burke, who will be in their opening day rotation or should be for four runs

2:12in the first inning. Martin is Roqueo and Valera. You'll open the game with three straight doubles and Keifas followed with a two run homer and then they were off to the races. And then they slammed the door in the seventh with their biggest inning of the spring. Seven runs, six hits. And Keboom had the Keboom and Tolentino hit home runs in the inning. Lon Tolentino, that was his second home run of the spring. Joe just the guy that hit 21 last year at Triple Apes. You know, he kind of passes around. He can play the infield. He's playing shortstop. Came in off the bench and played shortstop last night and made a throwing error. But he's got some pop. Yeah. And he's been playing some really good defense throughout the the spring. We've seen him on a number of occasions make diving stops. Makes him really nice throws. This is a kid who is through his his efforts right now in spring training and making himself at least putting himself on the radar. If there are injuries, if there are situations or anything like that, where he becomes maybe

3:16an option at some point, just because of the power he's been displaying at the plate and his ability to go out there and at least play a passable shortstop. No doubt about it. Interesting kid, you know, I think he was he was at one of the draft picks in that that one draft a few years ago when they only had five picks coming off of COVID, you know, comes from a baseball family. His dad played in the big leagues and he said he was an announcer for the angels. So yeah, interesting background. And he's kind of one of those guys that you know, he's made his presence felt like you indicated this spring. Yeah, there's a couple of guys on the roster who are still making their presence felt like Jason Churio, batten 400 with a 1000 OPS. He had to hit yesterday. But two more hits for on how Martinez who's excellent spring training has continued. If this is a guy who who's positioned on the the roster feels threatened in or felt threatened in any way,

4:18he's he's answering a lot of questions right now going out there collecting multiple hits and pretty much every game and still continuing to display, you know, a power surge. He had two doubles yesterday. Yeah, two doubles. You know, he's hit lead off played center field. So, you know, he's a valuable guy Joe switch hitter. You know, he's, you know, really pounds left-handed pitching. And you really, you know, improved against left-handed pitching last season. You know, he hit, he hit the right handers and you know, he struggled against right handers, but Burke's the right hander. And you know, he had to open the game with a double off him. So, you know, just he's having a good spring. And we've seen this before from on health a couple of years ago, he had a great spring. He was one you wanted to talk. He was to talk a camp. Then he got hurt. He filed a ball off his foot and you know, finally came back from that and then had to have handmade bone surgery at AAA. So, he got a kind of sidetracked there. But, you know, he's been he's been improving steadily. So, he's he's definitely, you know, I think he's definitely, I don't know if

5:20he starts Joe, but he's on the tour. You know, he's got a really good chance to make 26. Yeah, I mean, he's an example of a guy who's who's basically hitting his way onto that roster, at least at the beginning of the year, just because of, you know, he's he's so hot right now. And he has that versatility and he's he's able to play in a bunch of different spots, do a bunch of different things for them. I think, you know, it'd be kind of, it'd be outrageous to see him not on the roster to open the season. But, you know, it's a range of things have happened. We saw multiple hits out of Cody Huff and Austin hedges as well in in the ball game and, you know, just all around a pretty good day at the plate. And not a lot of the veteran guys in that that starting lineup, because it was a road game and it was, you know, that that first game back after a day off. So, probably expecting to see the regulars and the sort of that A lineup in, you know, in the starting lineup today, when the guardians were back home at, uh, at Good Your Ballpark,

6:22I believe they're playing, uh, who they got today. They've got the angels to and then that's at Good Your Ballpark tonight. I would expect, you know, the regular starters in the lineup, Jose Ramirez, Stephen Kwan, and I'm probably getting getting them ready to play back-to-back games as they progress and move forward as well. But, uh, you know, what we did see in yesterday's game, for the first time this season, Kate Smith took them out in a cactiously game. One strike out in a scoreless inning in the fifth. A good to see Kate Smith out there and, you know, I guess all the concerns and the red flags that we raised yesterday, uh, about not seeing him so far in camp, but probably, uh, you know, our fears had been swaged. Yeah, yeah, it was great to see Kate Smith out there, Joe, but he was, you know, there was a reason why he didn't, why he, you know, they kind of held him back, you know, what, 14, 15 games in the cactiously season. Other than the, you know, they, they wanted to make sure he was fully rested, fully recovered because he's

7:25pitched so much last two years. For the last 10 days or so, he's been dealing with a stiff neck, and, uh, you know, they, they didn't want to take any chances with him. So that held him back, probably a little, little longer than, than anticipated. So, you know, he is, but right now he looks good. He's supposed to pitch again Sunday. So I don't think it'll take Kate Smith, you know, long to get in the groove. It's not like, you know, he's a starter. Uh, he's got to get stretched out. He's, you know, he's, he's a one-ending guy and, you know, and he should have, he has more than enough time to get ready. Yeah. The, you know, we've heard the, the stories of his, uh, his temperament and his, his approach and, you know, how unflapable he is, uh, once again, yesterday, even vote, uh, the subject was brought up about how, uh, the plans for Kate Smith were, uh, to, to be an eye surgeon if he wasn't a, uh, a relief pitcher, you know, that, that, that all sort of tracks. I mean, if you talk to Kate Smith and you, you sort of understand, you know, get that, that feel of a guy who could be, you know, working in a, in a doctor's office and,

8:30you know, be a guy who, you basically trust with your, your eyesight as he, is he operates, but one of the things that sort of derailed that plan, I guess, uh, a student vote revealed, it was like the, he went in a different direction because, uh, his hands are too big to be, to be, to be a surgeon, uh, to be a, you know, a guy like that, uh, with that, that precision. So, one of the reasons why he's not an eye surgeon, besides the fact that he can throw 98 miles an hour with, with, with relative ease is, is that his hands are too big to operate on eyeballs. I was just kind of, it's kind of interesting. I was, uh, you know, kind of funny. It was almost like it was, uh, you, you, they were chuckling about it yesterday on invotes, uh, pre-game press conference because, you know, you think about a guy who's basically got the ability to do anything and he, you know, he choose to play baseball. And that's, uh, just an interesting thing out of Kate Smith. Well, we didn't, uh, see was Hunter Gattis. And we probably won't see him on the mound, at least for a few more days as we found out, uh, he's actually recovering from situation as well.

9:33Yeah. You know, he made one appearance, uh, Joe, I think, uh, February 27th through a scoreless inning against the Cubs and, uh, came down with the sole right forearm. He's been dealing with that sense, uh, the Guardian's head and MRI done on, uh, on, uh, you know, the, the forearm, it came back clean. Now, uh, you know, Kate Smith, it's a, it's a setback for him. He's got to go back to him. Yeah, yeah. I'm sorry. Yeah. Uh, for Hunter Gattis. And, um, he's got to go back to some weighted ball work. And then I guess, you know, just kind of gradually build up again, you know, bullpen's live BP and, uh, you know, get him back into some games. There's still, you know, I think you still it's time to get ready for the regular season. But, you know, it's, it's not, it's not an ideal situation for sure, because there's so, you know, they counsel heavily on, uh, Kate Smith and, and Gattis to, uh, close the door and the eighth, you know, they in the late inning. So those guys are industrial strength close relievers. They pitch 70, 70 innings of

10:37season like it's nothing. So you really, you know, it's, it's, it's, it's a bit of a red flag to me, Joe. Yeah. And, and, and even if a Hunter Gattis is able to put all that behind him and move forward without any further injury concerns and build up the way that you would want, uh, him to be ready by the end of spring training and makes the opening day roster. You're still going to have to be probably a little careful with him. At least the, the first couple of times you use him, just to make sure that, you know, he's, he's going to be able to survive the, the whole 162 game season. So you don't want to weaken the bullpen by not having it at full capacity when you break camp. But, uh, you know, if Gattis is able to work through this and not have another setback of any kind, then there's probably no reason why he shouldn't make the opening day roster. But, yeah, that's, that's a big red flag. Like you said, when he is as far as the bullpen goes. But again, this is one of the other, another, another one of the reasons why, um, just, uh, Chris Anson, Eddie, uh, Mike turnoff, Stephen Vogue put together in the offseason. This loaded bullpen

11:42with a bunch of different options and, and they, they, they sort of set themselves up to be able to handle, you know, an injury or a delay here or there, nothing catastrophic. But, you know, this is the kind of thing that they're able to absorb because of the number of arms and options that they have in camp. Yeah, they built that depth for a reason. They, uh, knew that, you know, in all likelihood, they were not going to have, uh, a manual class A this year. Um, you know, so they had to, had to stockpile some arms injuries. Joe are a part of spring training. They're a part of baseball. It, it happens every, every spring. So well, you've got to be ready to deal with it and the way you deal with that is depth. Yeah. And I found it interesting that the end of his bringing press conference yesterday, Stephen Vogue mentioned that Colby Allard is getting stretched out. Uh, this is a guy who we thought certainly was going to be a guy who was, it was an option as a reliever, but he's going to be pitching the rest of camp in the capacity to try and build himself up. He went two innings yesterday. A lot of pair of runs on three hits, but Allard

12:44pitched in in so many different roles for this team last year was so valuable on the second half of the season. And now they're, they're stretching him back out to be a starter. Thought, uh, when you look at the depth of the, uh, the, the, the guardian's rotation, okay, they've got six guys counting, uh, Messick and, and the, and the other five guys. But after that, he gets a little thin and it got even thinner when they lost Austin Peterson to the, uh, tricep injury. So, you know, it makes sense that they, they, you know, that they would give Allard a chance to get stretched out and, and maybe use him as a depth guy if, if he agrees to go down or maybe he can be a swing guy too, uh, you know, working the bullpen and give them some innings. If they need a, you know, a spot start or somebody gets injured, they've also got a dug hat in the casey. He can help there. But you've got to have seven, eight, nine guys. And, you know, it seems like Allard, they were kind of, you know, scrambling a little bit. And,

13:45Allard got you said, okay, you're, you're the next, you're the next depth starter. So, you know, it makes sense, you know, he was a number one pick by the Braves. And like you said, Joe, I mean, the guy couldn't pitch any better for Cleveland last season. Right. Yeah. And he also has that sort of, you know, just give me the ball and tell me where to go or where you need me and, and I'll, I'll go and I'll do that. A really veteran approach to, uh, to that kind of thing from Colby, Allard, we saw that all last season. And really kind of this change or the switch now pretty much means he probably won't make the opening day roster. I probably earmarks him for Columbus. If he's going to be in a starting capacity, but, uh, you know, even though he knows that that's the case, he's, he's still willing to, uh, to accept that and do what, what's asked him in that way. So, just, uh, you know, a lot of value there in Colby, Allard in the, in the bullpen and, and the rotation, uh, still being able to contribute in a lot of different ways. When I talk about the World Baseball Classic, uh, games continuing yesterday, the first full day of games after that,

14:46that opener, uh, on Wednesday night in Japan with the Australia, a team Australia playing the Czech Republic last night, five to one winners, uh, Travis Bazana. I didn't really contribute much at the plate in that game when hitless and four played appearances, but did, uh, draw a walk and score a run. Played some really nice defense. Got to see him make a couple of diving stops. Uh, you know, he, he knows where he's going with the ball right now, which is, uh, a big plus for a guy like Bazana, uh, and looks like he can make all the plays, uh, maybe not as, as flashy or as frangy as, as some of the guys in the Guardians system defensively, but this looks like it's a guy who you could really sort of picture and envision him in a, uh, you know, starting capacity in the lineup and Cleveland at second base. Yeah, and I think his personality is coming out here, Joe. You can tell he's excited about playing for his country. He's, uh, you know, emotional. He's kind of like the spark plug of that team. It seems to me. And I think, uh, that's probably one of the

15:50attributes that attracted the Guardians to him. He's, uh, he looks like he's a leader, you know, he plays like a leader. He's, I don't know what he's like in the locker room, but, uh, you know, he just get that feeling from him that, you know, he, he leads by the way he plays. He, you know, he kind of wears his emotions on his sleeve and, uh, that's, that's good to see. Yeah, and that's a, that's a veteran, uh, uh, you know, Australia team. They've got some guys on that roster who are, uh, you know, who have a little bit of experience that it's not all just young guys. I mean, he's, he's showing the leadership qualities and abilities on a team full of older players. And that, that, that's something he's going to have to do once he arrives in Cleveland as well. But, uh, yeah, like you said, his personality is coming out. I don't think, uh, you know, Travis Persona seems like the kind of guy whose personality is, is ever being hidden under a bushel. I mean, this is a, this is a guy who, uh, he, he, he's out there on the field. And, and he just sort of exudes those characteristics. And, and you can see it right from the beginning.

16:53So great to follow him. And, and team Australia playing their way into the strong possibility that they could be advancing to the knockout round. Uh, they're not two and o in pool play. They've got a big game against Japan coming up that, uh, you know, obviously, Japan's going to be heavily favored in that game. But, uh, you know, after that, they've got a game on Sunday against Korea. And it could come down to a winner or a loss against Korea being the difference in team Australia advancing into the knockout round. Uh, we're also eagerly awaiting, uh, you know, as we're recording this, it's about an hour away from Panama, uh, team Panama making their debut in the classic and Logan Allen will be on the mound for team Panama. Just, uh, you know, what are we, uh, what are we thinking about seeing Logan Allen get up there and, and perform as, uh, the, the opening base starting pitcher for a team Panama? Yeah, that's, that's really a cool, uh, uh, uh, you know, cool honor on his mom is from Panama. That's how he qualified for a team Panama. They've

17:54got a, they didn't draw a first, an easy first round, uh, no opponent. So he, Allen's going to be facing Cuba, you know, which is, uh, a traditional baseball powerhouse that has always done well in the WBC. So he's, he's going to have his hands full. But what a cool thing is mom's going to be there in Puerto Rico, you know, when they, when they open play. So, you know, that, that's got to be, that's, that's kind of a feather in your cap if you're Logan Allen. Yeah. And, you know, that, this, it might just be the case of, especially with the, uh, you know, Panama team is not expected to advance to the knockout round. This might just be his only chance to get in a game or make an appearance with team Panama. I know they have a lot of pitch limitations and, and rules for how many pitches you could throw when you can come back. You know, this might be really the only chance Logan Allen gets to, to go out there and, and pitch for Panama. But, you know, he's got a, a lot of, uh, he's got plenty to worry about when he gets back to, uh, the Guardians camp in terms of staying in the race for the one of the spots in the rotation. But again, this is a, like you said,

18:57a nice opportunity for him to do something fun, uh, for, uh, for his family. So yeah, that's, uh, that's where they are. Obviously, we're all getting, keeping our eyes on team USA, getting ready to make their debut Friday night, uh, tonight. I believe it's, uh, eight o'clock game against, uh, what Brazil, and they, uh, they, they take the field later on tonight, eight o'clock against Brazil, Logan Webb on the mound for the United States and, you know, a, a loaded US roster that's expected to, uh, advance and move on to the knockout round out of, uh, their pool play in pool B, uh, their tonight. Yeah, no doubt about it. That is, that's a team loaded, uh, you know, that's a team that was put together to win this thing. And, uh, you know, the first step comes tonight and they've kind of, they're against, they've looked good against, it's a wreck, inter exhibition games against MLB teams. So, you know, it's going to be fun to watch just, uh, to see them, to see what team USA can do. Right. Uh, Major League Baseball MLB.com came out with their

20:02list of the top, uh, farm systems in Major League Baseball. All of the, uh, the rankings, the top 100 prospects rankings for the preseason came out recently. And right now, the Guardians ranked number six among the MLB farm systems behind the Tigers, the Cardinals, Pirates, Dodgers, and the Brewers. Brewers the top ranked, uh, farm system in, uh, Major League Baseball, uh, with the prospects like Jesus Made, Luis Pena, Jeff Williams, all, uh, in line, uh, hopefully, uh, you know, progressing towards the Major League. Obviously, the Dodgers, uh, once again, one of the top, uh, you know, uh, farm systems in all of Baseball, Joe Sway, Dupala, the Outfielder that we saw, Applegans, the Guardians, uh, you know, last week. He's up there, uh, you know, highly rated prospect. I mean, we get to the, uh, the Cardinals with JJ Weatherhold, Liam Doyle, Weatherhold, uh, shortstop, uh, you know, certain, almost certain to make his Major League

21:06debut this season. Then you get to the Tigers and they've got, uh, two guys at the top of their, uh, farm system in Kevin McGonagall and, and Max Clark, obviously McGonagall, the number two, overall prospect in all of Baseball, uh, shortstop, who, uh, you know, looks like he's going to be, uh, a really nice piece for that infield there in Detroit, just a matter of time before he, uh, he makes his debut. You know, those, those are the teams ahead of Cleveland, uh, but the Guardians, you know, really holding their own with six guys in the top, uh, 100. That's, uh, that's a, that's a pretty good, you know, showing for Cleveland system that really seems now, right now, to be loaded on the position player side. Definitely, Joe, uh, you know, the top six players in the, in the, in the top 100, MLB's top 100 is Travis Pazana chased a lotter on hell, uh, hey now, hey now, is that right? I think we're healthy, vel, vel, uh, the last guys, Parker Messick and

22:06Cooper Engle and, uh, you know, the, uh, MLB dot com predicts that all six could, uh, you know, it's at some time help. Well, I guess all six could have a hand in helping Cleveland this year at some point during the season. Yeah, and we're, we're almost certain to see at least, uh, you know, three, maybe four of those guys in Pazana, in the water, uh, in Parker Messick, but you got to, you got to think with what Ralphie Velasquez has been able to do in this spring training and training camp, putting himself on the radar, just like, uh, CJ Kifus did the last couple of years. This is a kid who, he just hits the ball so hard and he has such an advanced approach at the plate. It's going to be fun to watch him, uh, at least if he gets to, uh, Columbus at some point along the timeline, just to be a step away from the big leagues. Wanted to get into some, some hey, Hoynesies here. And, uh, the first question is actually about Rafi Velasquez. The, the question comes from Tom in Columbus. He wants to know if, uh, if Rafiela Velasquez, when he turns 21,

23:11will we stop calling him Ralphie or does he prefer Ralphie? Uh, Hoynesie, I think the position is, as long as he hits the way he's been hitting in the, in training camp, but, you know, he, he can ask to be called whatever he wants in the, the Guardians will oblige. Yeah, I would think so. I mean, I guess if, uh, you know, Ralphie wanted his name change, he changed it. So I think, yeah, I think we, we go with Ralphie from here on out, Joe, until we hear something different. I kind of like Ralphie. I think too. I can't think of another major league that has come through. In my time following baseball, uh, that's been a, uh, a standout Ralphie. So, uh, you know, he, he could be, he's, he's king Ralphie the first as far as I'm concerned. Let's, let the kid get out there and, and play and let his personality out. I, just from seeing him, uh, from a far and watching him play a little bit, he kind of strikes me as a Ralphie. That's, uh, that's, that's, that's the approach that we see here for it. Dating myself, but, uh, you know, the honey mooners with Jackie Gleetson. He was Ralph Cramden and, uh, his buddy North and,

24:13Norton would always say, Ralphie baby. So, you know, I think that's, I think that's a, a winner right there. I Ralphie baby, I think works. He could, but I can see that on it. Can you see it on a t-shirt? And I think that's exactly it. And if that's the case, then, uh, here, I'll, I'll do you one better. Ralphie Velasca is going to be driving the bus for the guardians. That'd be great, uh, because that's what Ralph Cramden did. There you go. I'm the honey mooner. See, see, I know stuff from the 1900s. It's all, it's all right. We're, we're good. Next question comes from Jack Bacavace. He wants to know, hey, say, say the guardians love Peyton Palette about the possibility of an injury or even a day-to-day situation shows up. Could the guardians theoretically make a trade while he's under rule five control with Cleveland offer, uh, cash or, uh, you know, some sort of trade in terms of his rights. Can that be done? Or is it strict? Does he have to stay with the club for the entire season or be offered back? I think, uh, in the past, they have tried to do that. Make a deal with the club club that where they drafted the player from. So this

25:16would be the white socks in exchange for letting them keep, you know, the, the rule five players. It is possible. It doesn't, you rarely happens if I, if I'm remembering right, but you can try to make a deal for that guy, depending on how much you like him. Yeah. And it also probably has to do with, you know, what, what Chicago's needs are and what their, their situation is. I mean, if they feel like they're thin in the bullpen and, and he's a guy who can probably help them this year, then, you know, they might turn down any sort of overture like that and offer a trade and bring him back and, and make him an option in their camp as well. But just from the one time that we've seen him out there on the mound, kids got a little bit of electricity, a little bit of something to him. And I could see why they might like try to do everything they can to keep Peyton pull out around. But like we said, again, this is another example of why you build that depth. Just in case, he gets kind of squeezed out of the equation. You've got plenty of other arms around. Here's a question from David LeBern and Kanye Ott. He wants to know, do the minor leagueers that do not get called

26:20to participate in major league spring training games simply work out all spring, play inter squad games, etc. Or do they play spring training games against other minor league teams? I'm wondering how Chase Lovia let Dean Curley and the other draft picks from last year's class are looking this spring. That's from Rick and Kanye. They definitely play other organizations' teams. The minor leagueers will play the Reds and Guardians share the same complex in good years. So they play each other a lot. But, you know, they, you know, they minor leagueers will travel around the Phoenix area. They'll play the Brewers. They'll play, you know, all the, you know, and it's always like the 18, you know, the, the eight, the eight teams or the class eight teams, you know, they, they all play at the, you know, required, you know, kind of, you know, double A, triple A, single A, you know, at those levels. Yeah, there's a lot of, there's games going on all the time. Once, you know, all the team, all the minor leagueers report the camp. I think they, you know,

27:24they maybe play a couple of inner squad games, you know, they probably get a, you know, a week or six, seven days to get ready. And then the, then the minor league season starts are not, you know, the spring training minor league season starts. Yeah. And the, the fields there at the complex, they get nicer as you move up towards the, the majors, right? Obviously, the major league field is over at Goodyear Ballpark. But at the complex, like the, the higher level you are in the minors, the nicer the field you are on, right? Yeah, yeah. And, you know, there's a ton of fields, you know, they've got fields, you know, they just got fields all over the place. And, you know, a lot of times there are multiple games going on on the lower fields. I think they've got at least, you know, if I'm remembering right, they lead three or four fields there. So yeah, there's a lot of, there's a lot of activities, a lot of room to play baseball in all those complexes and Phoenix and in Florida. Yeah, you can get lost. We're running around that complex, if you don't know your way. Hey, Hoynesy, this one from John in Westfield Center, he says,

28:28at some point this season, Bessanna will be the Guardians every day, second baseman. He's pretty confident about that. Who do you think will be the starting shortstop by then? So who's, who's going to be turning double plays with Travis Bessanna when Bessanna finally gets up here and starts playing every day? Oh boy, that's a good question. I would think just off the top of my head, if Bessanna does make it, I think Rocky will probably slide back to a shortstop and play short. And, you know, Areas, if he's on the team, you know, right now he's dealing with a back injury. If he's on the team and I suspect he will be, you know, he, he has a lot more experience than Rocky, you know, bouncing around to different positions. So that would, you know, that makes sense to me, but, you know, I'm not making the decision. And yeah, obviously Gabriel Areas out of options, a guy who, you know, if he's going to be with the Guardians, he's going to be on the Major League roster to start the season. So we'll see, you know, a lot of us have predicted that, again, by the time Bessanna's ready to come up, that that exactly is what's going to happen that Rocky

29:31slides over to short. Again, that's why they play the games out. That's why, you know, everything sort of happens for a reason. We'll, we'll see what the what the future holds for, a Roqueo and Areas and that shortstop position later on down the road.
