I think a lot of people were very surprised by the by the way that game played out. You had a chance to roll the film back on earth and what did it look like to you? Yeah, I mean just you know it's funny. You know we spent a lot of time you did and I did and things I do till talking last year about the 49ers run game not being up to snuff. In fact it was you know probably the worst run game in the in the Kyle Shanahan era in terms of I think yards for carry and among some other metrics I'm sure.

But the other thing though the immediate thing that stood out to me when I put the tape on and we know that this is a team under Kyle that uses a motion and shifts and pre snap movement let's put it under the moniker pre snap movement that they that's a foundation of what Kyle does but in this game. They did it more than ever I mean in terms of just motion at the snap where someone was moving when the ball was snapped it was more than 65% of the offensive snaps which is the highest percentage of the Shanahan era in San Francisco. And I kind of noticed that you know obviously pretty quickly and until the game ended you know you don't know the exact number but but they really did a ton of pre snap movement and you know the Rams made a decision. You know they were really good deal on a year ago they had Garrett now but their tackles are really really good as you know are I mean so they made the decision that they were going to play 4 to 5 nickel against the 21 personnel and against the base personnel packages of the Niners.

And they were going to rely basically on their detacles because when you do that you're losing one player in a gap so you're really relying on your detacles and their detacles have were really good a year ago fish turn or four these guys were really good run defenders so they made a decision to really rely on those guys and those guys did not do a great job and in fact the interior of the 49ers all line which you know somewhat questionable a year ago. With Poonie not having the same year he had as a rookie with Brendel being up and down with the you know the left guard position being very up in the air. The interior of that all line played extremely well in the scheme. I agree I agree you know it's funny Greg Conner Colby it's like a become a national pastime out here to bash Conner Colby so I decided to go through every snap. Every snap he did in the preseason and I thought he looked really good I really did I was like you know this guy has subtle movements but there's an understanding of you know the mission let's say on every play.

I didn't see him getting overwhelmed by speed or by power no preseason I thought he looked very assignment sound what did he look like in week one. Yeah I mean don't forget when you're playing against a team that essentially is playing a 4 2 5 now there were times late kind of snuck in as the slot corner snuck into the box but obviously not and he's a very good player by the way but he's not a linebacker in terms of size and he sort of has to walk that fine line depending on the offensive formation between being in the box being an overhang player or even depending on the formation being out of the box so essentially they're playing in a 4 2 5 so they've got two linebackers who are truly stacked. So and and they play a lot of wide 9 so there's a lot of space inside okay and now you get into these double teams which are really hard you know no matter how good your detacles are if they're going to be double team in the inside run game that's that's a hard assignment.

So you know Colby was part of a number of double teams obviously it's an individual blocks as well but those double teams really move people and when you when you can move a detacle with a double team as you know Larry those linebackers it's hard for them to play because all of a sudden they have their defensive lineman in their lap and they can't really do much they can't really react to the to the play and that happened a number of times. The Niners shut out miles Garrett from the box score no tackles no sacks no quarterback hits I mean he was unbelievable and the stat that jumped out to me in the post game was that Brock Purti was 11 of 12 on passes behind the line of scrimmage. First of all 11 of 12 is a great percentage but 12 passes in the backfield yeah how did the Niners neutralize I mean I know McKibits and Trent played well I don't want to take anything away from them. Yeah but how did they neutralize Garrett because it was a team effort I'm sure it was more schematic then I think individual be just and again like you said taking nothing away from Williams who predominantly you know played against him and at times Garrett was on the other side.

But they played a lot of wide nine the Niners ran a ton inside the past game with very very few exceptions was not asking Purti to drop back seven steps and sit in the pocket you know there was a lot of motion I mean think of it this way you know the run game and we'll get into a little more detail because it's necessary just because it was so good and and what they do with that motion with with the use check which I I don't know what they call it I just called in my notes dash motion just to give myself. And name for but but 11 of black 14 runs featured motion of the snap 7 of 10 McCaffrey's runs featured motion the snap 14 at their 24 runs combined came versus the Rams 425 nickel so and a lot of those runs were inside. They ran outside a couple times we'll get into why they did that but you know Garrett was basically playing as a truly wide nine defensive and with the nature of the run game and the systemics of the past game he was not you know they kind of took him out of the game just schematically you know and and and I know people look at the box score and probably think that oh my god you know Garrett's losing it or whatever and of course he went on I are now so I don't know if he was injured you know what his status was but but I thought it was more scheme.

And I think it was more dramatic than just a you know dominating individual performances. Yeah I mean you mentioned the motion I mean you know there's I mean you watch film for a living so I mean you could probably speak to all the different kinds of motion but I mean there's jet motion there's orbit motion where you know I know yeah I'm gonna pull the linebacker and and you know and then you know you dish into the pitch man there's there's short motion there's there's cross motion there's there's kind of the reload motion which the Niners use where they they line up the half back split out wide many resets in the backfield there's there's you know double motion there's all kinds of thing I mean how many different forms of motion are they and what exactly why does Shanahan why is he the the the biggest user of pre snap motion do you think in the league because he's a believer in it and he almost double down on it in this game. Yeah did yeah well you know I think you're you're trying to do a couple of things number one it's you're trying to mess with the eyes of second level defenders

because when there's a lot of backfield action there's a lot of them a lot of things for those players to look at and then sometimes depending on the team you know if you're playing a team that plays a lot of zone and and the Rams are more of a zone team and a man team but you're trying just to get second level players to bunk just to move sometimes moving half a yard or yard is all you need because now what happens is there's set up better for the the angle and the leverage blocks by the offensive lineman or at times it could be a wide receiver coming inside just there's set up better in terms of a leverage situation because what look the offensive lineman and there are so many different offensive line coaches you know this Larry and a lot of them teach it differently but essentially what you're talking about is aiming point an angle of departure you know that you're trying to that's what you're trying to do to block guys and if you have the angle on them right away it just makes those blocks so much easier and that's you're that's what you're trying to do there's just a lot of eye candy and you just don't

know I mean what they do with ujtrence and they didn't once with kid all on a play that actually went outside and we'll get to that nasect but um You know, it just makes it hard because the thing with you's check when he does that sort of dash motion from from a wing tight end Alignments into the backfield you don't know where he's gonna go after that. He goes to multiple spots You know, so you're just uncertain defensively of what kind of run is coming because he does multiple things from that look What did you think of how the Niners ran the ball here? It was the very even split 14 carries for black Down carries for McCaffrey Debo even got one run for 12 yards, but What was the key because the Niners as you mentioned off the off the rip here? Very inefficient last year running the ball. There were five games Greg where they didn't average three yards of carry I know I have Christian McCaffrey so a lot of it was pointed and blamed on the wide receivers the blocking on the perimeter or lack thereof

Maybe the lack of a speed threat to sprit create space overall But how were the Niners effective running in this game because they ran for five eight a carry against a really good defense Yeah, I mean to me it was Much of it was a function of the team they played against and how they chose to play them It was clear that Chris Schule decided that he was going to play in 425 nickel because I think in the first half I think they played every snap but one in 425 nickel, okay? And so then they they you know the game was relatively close at that point So he came out to start the third quarter in his 425 nickel and the first two plays of the third quarter were McCaffrey 16 yards of McCaffrey 14 yards and McCaffrey 16 yards both of them featured that you check Dash motion into the backfield then he was deployed as a kick-out blocker on the widest edge defender

Both runs the first was it was gap scheme the second was inside zone came with the Rams in a two shell safety structure Now Lake was actually in the box on both of those but again. He's he's not a linebacker. So they did that and You know and then what what I found really interesting was on the next series that which was the second third quarter possession On the second or third or fourth play I forget what it was They went to their base five to front because they were just getting there was too much space with their 425 With the dns in wide nine alignments So then they went to their base five to front on that second series of the third quarter and that's and this is where Shanahan is just You know and this is this is what play calling is to me It's it's seeing the flow of a game, okay? You know a lot of guys can get up on the board or on the iPad and you know can map out plays But it's understanding how a game is flowing and and what little adjustments happened through the course of a game Because then what the 49ers did instead of running inside because now you had that reduced front because you had a five-man front

With essentially a reduced front inside They countered by attacking the edge with the same use check desk motion But this time it was an outside zone toss with use check blocking on the perimeter Then they did the same thing with kiddo I believe on the same drive So I just thought that this was just I mean this is one reason I love football so much as these kinds of things Larry I mean you see these things on tape and this is football to me, you know So but you know Kyle so good at this obviously, you know There are a lot of people who think he's the best in the league But I just thought the way the nine are sort of mapped out and Executed their plan against the way the Rams chose to play and then the adjustment when the Rams Decided to make a change because they were quite frankly just getting there, you know what kicked I just thought that it was really really good stuff Greg go sell with us on the uma guest line as we chop it up and talk Talk talk Niners Rams and of course Greg is brought to you by Alamar marina.net

Thank you to Alamar marina.net check them out great restaurant on the Sacramento River couple individual plays I wanted to get your thoughts on The the posee are the a pretty Touchdown to To do yeah, I mean seven step drop from under center. You don't see that a lot Yeah, you don't that yet Garrett on the sideline, you know, so they so he wasn't in the game at that point and And purdey put a dime on Robinson who ran right by the safeties on the post the Niners had the double wings shipping on the edges and It was just great past protection and and purdey just absolute dime right on his hand on the back of the end zone Couldn't have been thrown a whole lot better What did what did the film show on that play? Yeah, I mean it was it was the Rams didn't react to Robinson at all It was almost like it's him. Yeah, what was interesting is they still shipped even though Garrett was not in the game because that was the play call They weren't it's well It was a 12 personnel package. It was reduced and balanced versus the Rams what looked to me like nickel, you know cover four

So Robinson had a condensed boundaries split and he ran the deep posts and it was a digger out opposite So it was a post-dig combination McDuffie in cover four on on Robinson side he was playing from with because Robinson was reduced So he was out leveraged right off the bat the player I didn't and I don't know how they how they teach it But the boundary safety to the side of Robinson That was kitchens and he had his body and his eyes inside with little awareness of Robinson now I don't know how they choose to play it There's some teams that want the the backside safety to get over the top of a post So I don't know how the Rams teach it But the bottom line is with McDuffie playing so far outside because you know He's playing from with because he was out leverage right pre snap in a cover for look And with kitchens not even a really aware Robinson basically ran that route like they were in practice and Ferdy had a clean vertical reading he threw a good ball

Really was a nice play also What did you see on the party interception another seven step drop kind of a condensed two by two formation and It was like Quentin Lake. There was no back in the flat. He's like he had he had no Responsibility and he just kept getting deeper and wider. That's what they that's what the way they coach it up And it was kind of an easy. I mean he was joking about it on the sidelines a minute later He's like, yeah, I got my drop. I turned around and the ball hit me in the hands. I mean it was yeah Well, they're The Rams rotated from a two shell quarters looked to cover three and Purdy threw the kid on the out cut But there was no route to control the flat defender lake So Lake just as you said he just sunk underneath kiddo because there was no one in front of him There was no one to control him You know that's one of the main things when you run route combinations and the really good guys who do it and Kyle's great It was just this play but you know You have to decide who you're attacking and then who needs to be controlled Because if there's no one to control Lake and there wasn't on this given play then he just sinks

You know he doesn't have to worry about anything in front of him because there's no one there So then he can just sink and he doesn't necessarily know that the ball is gonna be thrown to kiddo But he's just sinking and all of a sudden the balls thrown to kiddo and he's right there But there was no no it was no control route no one controlled him to prevent him from sinking Greg there's so many aspects of this thing I want to get your thoughts on but let's flip the card and talk a little bit about Rahim Morris because I think Rahim Morris the job that he did I mean the Rams last year average 200 and are 35 points a game and 290 yards a game in the best the most passing yards of anybody in pro football and Stafford was held to 155 with no touchdowns. They kept this D this Rams offense to seven points I mean this was a miraculous game plan. I got a think by Rahim. What are the films show? What were the wrinkles that he but that bothered Stafford in this game? Well, there were a couple things number one the first thing I noticed you know after a number of plays was that

Unlike you know Robert Salah what Bernheim did is he played boundary corner and field corner As opposed to Si so Lenore was the boundary corner and green was the field corner Number two they clearly played meaningful snaps of press even even who was in man coverage per se They pressed and then they disrupted some routes off the ball So that disrupted the timing of the past game the other thing and this is why you can't just look at a stat sheet They had no sacks and people probably saying oh well, you know, they only had twenty sacks last year now They had no sacks what's going on? But they really generated significant inside pressure throughout the game and you could tell Stafford was not a comfortable player So even though they did not have any sacks Larry and I'm sure you noticed is watching the tape They really did generate pressure Stafford was not comfortable and he started to play a little fast And that's the way you have to defend Stafford. He's obviously in all time when he's great But you know if you start getting people in his grill and he feels that they're there He you know most quarterbacks start to play fast especially if they don't have the ability to you know get outside the pocket and run around

Which obviously Stafford is not yeah, I mean he had he has to feel your defensive front and he was felt they hit they hit him eight times Yeah, I'm in the first snap of the game with Bosa of they hit him eight times and you mentioned it inside OSA Odigy Zua had four of the eight hits on the quarterback What did you think of Odigy Zua's initial forty-one? Yeah, it played well You know he played well, you know he was part of that inside pressure But what was interesting to me and it's just so funny how things work out first play of the game the two guys who missed You know last season Bosa and one are right away on the first play of the game You just you know they were big factors. I mean you saw Bosa just manhand all the right tackle. I mean he just Pushed him right out of the way and laid the head on staffer and then Warner made the play you know on the ball on the pass but you know Warner is just And I'm you watch the tapes you know I'm talking about Warner is just so good It's and I thought Bosa had a lot of dominant staffs not only in the past rush but in the run game as well

Yeah, no, I thought both this might have been one of the better run defense games I can remember from Nick Bosa He was phenomenal and great That's really remarkable because the guy didn't play a single snap in the preseason Yeah, no, he didn't practice. I mean he really has not practiced All summer he just like worked on the side on his conditioning It was like college football they rolled him out there in the first game and said go after it And I thought Nick Bosa was spectacular when you consider how little he's played this summer Yeah, he was I mean it was the run game stuff. You're right We expect the pass rush, but I thought he was really really good in the run game really good And he maybe because he didn't play I mean and his legs were you know strong But he showed tremendous quickness off the ball We know he has great power as a pass russia, which you know We saw beginning with the first play of the game He can play off contact and initiate contact And displace as well as anybody as a pass russia, but in the run game I thought he was really really dominant and then um

You know, I just yeah, I love it the way they use a key on white He gives that defensive front a lot of versatility. I mean he can line up pretty much in every position along the defensive front Obviously dougar was a significant part of their their approach. He played You know and he played on the second level. There were times they put him on the ball on the edge They were very effective with multiple stun concepts out of their loaded fronts on third down So people know what a loaded front is it's when you line up three defensive lineman to one side of the offensive center Now again, they didn't it didn't result in sacks But they consistently got the looper in these stun concepts clean through the a gap And when you're clean through the a gap the quarterback notices that it's right in his face So even if you're not sacking him he he if he's not seeing it by looking down and staffer doesn't look down But you can feel that and sense that believe me when there's someone clean right in front of you What's Reheum's reputation Greg as far as I mean in this game demon or rinardo green jack jones upton stout the nine or corners who had time struggle last year

Yeah, I thought all across the board played maybe their best game. I stout was phenomenal His blitz where he came and got a hit on stafford. Yeah Was it was a tremendous play? I think that led to an interception Stout stout I thought really played well. He's a small slot player, but man He's very strong and he's a great blitz show blood in here football season is finally back and prize picks is bringing out their best offer yet New users who sign up will get one hundred and fifty dollars in lineups if you win your first five dollar lineup That's right. It's more fish than a quarter pounder the battle is closed And for only five ninety nine even regular juice can afford it like that guy Give me that big old burger. Yeah The whole Angus marks on us Only five ninety nine is whole senior available for a limited time to participate in restaurants tax on included Not valid for use within a combo or in combination with any other offer or discount Yeah, and they didn't blitz it ton. I mean they played predominantly out of a too high safety structure They only rushed five on three of staffers 25 dropback

So they they did not really come after him with more than four But they squeezed the pocket multiple times they made him uncomfortable And I thought the combination and the mix between the the rush and the coverage was really really good There were just times where staff would clearly did not have clean defined throws within structure And normally he's that's his game he gets back there he sees it cleanly and he knows where to go with the football You rarely see him stuck in the pocket because he's obviously not a playmaker He's not gonna run around he doesn't have that dimension to his game So he'll end up throwing it and a lot of times in it becomes kind of a hard Undefined throw which happened you know a number of times in this game One of the narratives was how would the Niners defend 13 personnel the three tight end looks at the Rams went to and also With Cliff Kingsbury there We knew we were gonna see some tempo and sure enough on the big pass play to to Puka You know the Rams kind of sped up the tempo so we got a little bit of that but how did the Niners defend

The three tight ends Yeah, I mean to me it wasn't like they did anything you know unbelievable I mean they played 23 snaps of base so they're gonna you know match up and then once you're doing that Then I think you're just playing your rules. I mean, I don't think they did anything You know that was wow look what they did you just you it depends on your personnel You know you made the point that That they went up tempo and the cool is 41 y'all which you know obviously should have been a 17 y'all to Brown has to make that tackle And I thought he was a little slow reacting to the throw I mean I always felt like a safety in that situation even has to prevent the completion But the completion was made he's got to tackle him there and we're talking about maybe a 17 yard gain But But you know other than that I think that You know they just They just played based on their personnel and their rules You know one of the things I've learned from coach of through the years Larry is you can't overload your Defense with all these things in other words off they do this then we have to do this

But if they do this then we have to do this but if they do that then we have to do that at some point You have a couple of things you do based on what the look is or the personnel and then you play your rules And if you execute and play your rules properly you're pretty much going to handle it correctly The big plays usually occur when somebody doesn't execute the proper way You know is they don't play within the rules so I didn't think the Niners did anything you know dramatic Versus 13 personnel now maybe I'm wrong, you know obviously I'm not in the meetings But it didn't look like that to me on film Two last ones before we let you go Their Jeremy Fowler for me as pn is reporting that the 49ers are showing trade interest in Joey Porter Jr Who played I believe with jay or brown at Penn State was a surround pick by the Steelers He's emerged as a great corner He wants a new contract. He's still on the rookie deal. He wants 30 million dollars a year Um, and the Steelers are you know reluctant to trade him, but they don't want to give him a contract extension

What do you think of of Joey Porter Jr He's played 47 career games 41 starts only three interceptions But he's also a 34 inch arm yeah, orner. He's very very confident plays with a ton of swagger Um, what state what are the traits of a Joey Porter Jr. That stand out to you when you watch film Just a really strong combination of length and athleticism and movement I mean you're talking about a long corner. He can play press. He can play off And given what we've seen from the you know, I know it's just one game But obviously they practiced this given what we saw in the one game We're dealing with a 49er defense that they're going to play press They're going to have a mix of press and off and different coverage concepts Joey Porter can do that and he certainly can play press and If you choose if you want to depending on the opponent use him as a match-up player He's got the traits to do that So you know again, I guess there's so many factors are involved in whether you trade for a player like that

but on defense They're not paying a lot of guys a lot of money, right? I mean they don't they don't have a lot on the defense that they're paying big dollars to a lot of players, right? Well, I mean both son Warner. Yeah, but who else? Yeah, I mean Dimo and the war got it got an extension But not too many you're right. I mean they and they do have 45 million on the cap Yeah, I was gonna say a courteous sign. So I mean, you know They probably have cap room if they really wanted to make the trade and sign them What what is it though Greg about great corners? You know, I've heard this many times that if you really want to free up a defensive coordinator To do lots of different things that he can do lots of different things if he's got great corners and this Rehim I believe is one of the guys that brought Jalen Ramsey originally to the Rams Yeah, if you love Ramsey, you know with the Rams he probably would love Porter Junior here with the 90s, but what what what are two dominant corners? Allow defensive coordinators to do Well number one you you feel comfortable playing man coverage, okay? I've had this conversation with decordinationally

I remember having a conversation with Dennis Allen who's one of the best you know deep offensive coordinators You know over the last number of years and you know, you'd always say man if you're not comfortable with your corners Then you're you're not gonna play man coverage in that limits your options the other thing too is Because there's so much more of quarters looks you know for across What a lot of teams now are doing if they have the corner that can do it, okay? And that's where Joey Porter comes into the equation is versus three by one sets a lot of teams like to take that boundary Safety to the single receiver side and basically poach him to the three receiver side So that boundary corner is essentially playing zero man now you can't do that unless you feel comfortable with your boundary corner playing zero man, you know So you know Porter could be that guy you could make him your boundary corner and feel very very comfortable with that extra body the safety You know cheating and poaching inside and then limiting what an offense can do to the trip side of the formation

It's gonna be a very very interesting year Niner fans are super excited after watching the the four denaters Look win and win so impressively in Australia I know you didn't watch the dolphins raiders much this week not a lot of people did But do you have any thought at all on the on the young dolphins? They are the youngest team yeah on paper I think the average age is 25.5 years of age. It's it's Jeff Hathley It's a one running back deal with Devon H Ann. It's a four three defense with uh with you know with some really interesting players Jacob Rodriguez, Chris Johnson two of their young stars. They just drafted any any thought On on the dolphins at all before we say goodbye Um, you know obviously I saw some of the game on TV. I have not watched that tape yet um, you know Obviously the big talk is going to be the quarterback, you know Can he be a true starting quarterback in this league? I think that you know at this point. It's probably somewhat unknown You know, they seem to the rookie wide receiver Douglas. I know had a really good camp. Yeah, he's big. He can run

um You know, so We'll see how that plays out, you know, they're they're They're all line actually could end up being pretty good as the year progresses Um, Aaron Brewer is a really interesting player because he's not big for a center But he's a really really good player and they've got young players I mean the two guards ones are rookie proctor from Alabama the others a second-year player Um, I guess it's Savi Nea from Airsoft Arizona, you know who played tackle in college where most people thought he have to move inside Patrick Paul is a very intriguing left tackle who's got traits to be a good player I mean, you know, these guys These guys are all pretty hydraff choices other than Brewer's Yeah, definitely Brewer, but Brewer is a really good player So, you know, you have to assume that maybe they'll develop, you know, and because they're going to have to run the ball quite frankly I mean that's going to have to be foundationally what they do The issue for them is on defense. I mean, there's just not a lot there

So, um, you know, they're relying look I love Jacob Rodriguez coming out. Love. Yeah, I thought I I can't recall seeing a guy who just played with and I hate to use this the words overused But just his feel and his instincts for the position and what he was what he saw and how he triggered I mean, I've never seen a guy get cleaned so many times and make tackles, you know good tackles But you look at their secondary and you know, you kind of feel like You can really take advantage of that secondary and then you look at their past rush and you you feel like okay Who's who's really the past rusher here that you need to worry about so defensively you just wonder, you know Can they hold up unless guys get significantly better? Yeah, no, I agree with your assessment. I think they're offensive line, you know It's two ones. It's two twos and brooders a pro baller in the pivot so they mean that I think that could be their strength They didn't run it well against the Raiders and we I'm sure they'll show up at Levi's Sunday intent on establishing H&N and we'll see if it happens Greg
