Grammy-Winning Jazz Singer Cassandra Wilson Dies at 70

The mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, released a statement honoring Wilson, saying the city has lost an extraordinary native daughter. Wilson was celebrated for a career rooted in jazz, blues, gospel, and folk, earning a claim for her voice and emotional depth. The mayor said Wilson carried the sound, speared in history of Mississippi, wherever her music reached and praised her ability to connect generations through music. Time magazine, what's called Wilson, America's best singer, and she earned Grammy awards during her decades-long career. The mayor added that Wilson showed the world the riches of Jackson and Mississippi music, saying her legacy will continue through the artist she inspired and the pride she brought to her hometown. Rest in peace, Cassandra Wilson.
