The latest headlines, weather, and stories right here on Durham News today. Johnson C. Smith University has named Maryland Governor West Moore as its commencement speaker for the class of 2026. University President Valerie Kinlock made the announcement this week. The ceremony is set for May 17th at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte. Moore will also deliver the keynote at Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Pennsylvania. That's where he earned an associate's degree back in 1998. As an Army veteran and Johns Hopkins graduate, Moore made history in 2023 as Maryland's first black governor. He's just the third African-American ever-elected governor in the United States. Before politics, Moore started Bridge at you, a program helping underserved college freshmen succeed. It got bought by another company in 2018. He then led the Robinhood Foundation, New York City's biggest anti-poverty group for four years. This marks the 153rd commencement

speaker for the historically black university founded in 1867. Officials say they are excited for Moore to inspire the roughly 1100 students as they gear up for the future.
