Good Life and Still Not Happy?
About this episode
You can hit every target, rack up major wins, and build a life that looks extraordinary on paper—yet still wake up feeling completely flat.
Most high achievers carry a silent, shame-inducing secret: they are productive, accomplished, and deeply grateful, but they feel dead inside. They assume that because their life is objectively good, feeling hollow must mean something is wrong with them. Driven by an relentless hustle reflex, they stay locked in "doing mode," substituting progress for genuine joy and tasks for presence. Over time, laughter gets pushed to the back burner, seriousness becomes the default setting, and a low-level emotional monotony quietly steals their vitality.
In this raw, unvarnished episode of the Living Lucky® Podcast, Jana and Jason Shelfer name the exact trap that keeps successful people feeling numb. From Jana’s candid confession about stage-fright panic during a stand-up comedy class to Jason’s breakdown of why "progress" isn't the same as "happiness," they dismantle the myth of work-life balance in favor of a Fun-Responsibility Balance. They lay out a practical, physical-first framework to interrupt the monotony loop and intentionally choose aliveness.
Inside:
- The "Good Life, Numb Soul" Paradox: Why achieving your goals without presence creates an emotional disconnect that sleep or vacation won't fix.
- Doing Mode vs. Being Mode: The psychological trap that turns your whole life into a endless project and starves your nervous system of joy.
- Fun-Responsibility Balance: Why traditional "work-life balance" fails high achievers, and how to prioritize aliveness alongside serious goals.
- The Stand-Up Comedy Panic: Jana shares a raw story of attempting to "force" laughter on stage, revealing why joy requires experiment over performance.
- Action-First Physiology: How forcing physical action—like laughing yoga or changing posture—alters brain chemistry long before your mind catches up.
Stop treating joy like a luxury reward for when the work is finally done. If you are ready to stop coasting on autopilot, reframe your daily energy, and feel alive inside the life you built, hit play now.
Listen to the audio, watch the official video broadcast, subscribe, and share one thing that makes you feel most alive today.
NUGGETS
- Progress is not happiness. Ticking off business goals gives you a dopamine hit of achievement, but it doesn't build emotional vitality or aliveness.
- Monotony, not sadness, is the enemy. The opposite of joy isn't depression—it's the flat, unfeeling state of living on complete autopilot.
- Label your state before the day starts. Define what you want to feel at 7:00 AM instead of grading your mood at 10:00 PM.
- Change your physiology first. When your mind is stuck in a cerebral rut, use physical motion, posture, or forced laughter to shift your body chemistry.
- Laughter is an operational metric. If you go days without real laughter, your environment is actively reinforcing the monotony you are trying to break.

Questions:
Why do high achievers feel empty or flat even when their life is objectively successful? High achievers often feel empty despite objective success because they operate predominantly in "doing mode"—a state of hyper-focus on task execution, goal attainment, and progress. While this drive yields external results, it suppresses "being mode," which is required for emotional connection, presence, and joy. Over time, achieving becomes a subconscious substitute for feeling alive, resulting in an emotional disconnect or burnout.
What is the difference between Work-Life Balance and a Fun-Responsibility Balance? Traditional Work-Life Balance focuses on dividing hours between occupational tasks and personal time, often creating guilt when priorities shift. A Fun-Responsibility Balance focuses on emotional quality and vitality: ensuring that essential life responsibilities (business, finances, family) are counterbalanced by intentional, high-aliveness experiences (laughter, play, novelty) regardless of how the calendar is divided.
How does changing your physiology alter your mental state and mood? Changing your physiology alters your mental state through bottom-up neurological processing. Facial expressions, posture, deep breathing, and vocalizations (such as laughter) trigger immediate neurochemical responses in the brain, releasing endorphins and lowering cortisol. By executing the physical action first (e.g., forcing a laugh or stretching), you shift your internal biochemistry, which subsequently directs your conscious thoughts and mood.
- The "Good Life, Flat Soul" Confession: Admitting the quiet truth Jana and Jason open the episode naming the taboo feeling of having a great life while feeling uninspired and numb inside it.
- Resting Bitch Face & The Death of Laughter: Spotting the physical signs Analyzing how "professorial" work mode pushes laughter off the priority list, leading to physical tension and an unapproachable presence.
- Doing Mode vs. Being Mode: The high-achiever burnout loop Jason breaks down why locking into execution mode starves your emotional vitality and keeps you from experiencing your own day.
- The Golden Year Memory: What happens when you put play first Recounting their 2025 sabbatical year on the water. Learn how quickly high achievers forget their best seasons once business demands return.
- Work-Life Balance vs. Fun-Responsibility Balance: A practical reframe Moving away from time management guilt to focus on emotional allocation. Discover why framing responsibilities around "get to" shifts your baseline.
- The Stand-Up Comedy Disaster: Trying to force laughter on stage Jana's hilarious, candid story of joining a stand-up comedy class that ended in a stage panic attack. Discover why joy requires low-stakes experimentation.
- Defining Aliveness: Why happiness isn't the opposite of sadness Jason and Jana dissect the difference between melancholy monotony and true vitality. Learn why feeling "productive" at a desk for 10 hours isn't the same as feeling alive.
- Labeling Your Experience First: The morning alignment strategy How to define what you want to feel at 7:00 AM so your Reticular Activating System (RAS) actively hunts for it throughout the day.
- Physiology Over Psychology: Using action to change chemistry Why you can't always think your way into a good mood. Learn how laughing yoga, movement, and physical action force an immediate biochemistry reset.

Are you like me? Sometimes you're just not happy. Even though life is good? You don't have to have a bad life to realize you're not alive in it. Today we're gonna teach you how to experience life differently. That sounds crazy and fun. Oh! I'm Janna. I'm Jason. And we are living lucky. You are too. I have a great life. So why am I not happy? I think everyone goes through these times where if we are to examine our feelings and our emotions the way we feel, it's like, hey, am I actually happy right now? You asked me that question several times, like throughout a week or a month. Why am I not laughing? Why am I not smiling more?
And that's one of the things, like we noticed a lot of times I push the laughter out the window and go into the professorial mode or work mode. You push laughter on the back burner and laughter is your genius. That's when you shine. That's so funny. Okay, don't overdo it. Funny looking. No, I've been catching myself like, I've got like, bitch face. Oh no, RBF. Whatever they call it. But I'm thinking, oh no, I may have to go get that fix. Yeah, you gotta go get it tightened up. Get a resting bitch face. Don't say that. You're not supposed to hear that from your husband. I'm re-adverating what I heard. I think you are. Now you choose to bring out your funny. Go put your funny on the back burner. I think you're absolutely stunning. No, why aren't we happy? I feel like the luckiest person on the planet, but sometimes I don't.
Get real. Let's get real. First of all, you know this is real. Okay, well I know that's real. But we're talking about. The reality is there are so many moments, even throughout just a regular day, that I get so caught up in the doing. That you forget the beat. Yes. And you get me, you ask the question often, hey, where are you at? How are you feeling? Because I will ignore the feelings and be in the doings. I feel like I get caught up. I'm a very high achiever. Yes. So I get caught up in achieving, achieving, achieving. And there's this motivator inside me. That's like, we gotta put on the gas. We gotta put on the gas. We gotta do more hustle, hustle, hustle. What's the next goal? I forget to enjoy myself along the way. And really, isn't the whole point of this life journey to have fun and enjoy ourselves? Have the best experience of life as possible.
And we know this, Jason. I know. You and I know this specifically, we took all of 2025, we took that off of our business to ski and have fun. Fun time. And it was really one of the best years of our life. We'd never become a world champion. We call it the golden year. It was the golden year. And yet, how quickly we forget. Yeah. Well, and I think part of it is, it's very fun for me to build the business and to figure out ways to move the business forward. But I also get wrapped up in it. Like so wrapped up in it that I don't look up. That we stop feeling alive. Yeah. We start feeling inundated. But there's also a disconnect from the outside world and from experiencing life because I'm just trying to do this one thing. Like do the quote unquote project. And that creates this feeling of, I'm not going out and doing.
I'm kind of resting. Yeah, and look at me. I got resting bitch face. Just listening to you do that. I know. I know. We love, I love being out on the water. I love being out having fun with you. I love having these conversations with you. But we have forgotten how to do that at times. And I think that's where it is. Is it balance? Is it work life balance? Is it fun life balance? What is it fun responsibility balance? What is it that were? So that's a unique perspective. The fun responsibility balance. And that kind of goes into the, what do I have to do? What do I get to do? Question? Maybe. So like I have to go to work or I get to go to work. Yeah. So it's like I feel like I get to get up and play in this living lucky creation. However, there's also what are the other things that I want to experience the laughter?
Because I can't. I really want to laugh. I mean, I even tried joining a comedy class, which ended in failure. I'm just going to be real. I'm not good at that scripted stand-up comedy things. Because it failed for me too. I got on stage and had a panic attack. That's what happened. They're like, be funny. I can't do it. You're turned. Don't tell me to be funny on the spot. Never works for me. Tell a joke. I just forgot them all. I want to find places that I laugh more. And I have really intentionally tried to be around more people. However, I find that the people that I'm around are maybe even more serious than I am. Or they're cerebral. They're very cerebral people. Save that five times. Serribral people. They're very cerebral people. Go eat a bowl of cerebral this morning. It sounds like some sort of disease.
They're very cerebral. Or breakfast meal. And I noticed that one of the things that I haven't said I want to experience when we go through our formula is I haven't written down that I want to experience laughter. Like I haven't. I have. I write that down all the time. I've been writing that down now for two years. So that's something. I'm failing. We need to discuss what we're writing down more often. We do. But I think we need to discuss it about the business. Yes. I think we discuss it often about the business. And we need to discuss more about just some of the other things. Because we were going to. But that's why I signed us up for the comedy class. And that's why I remember I went through that phase where the only thing that we would watch on Netflix was comedians. Were comedians. And they were so funny. Not always. Not always. But they got a Netflix special. Like what are they doing? How do they do it? How are you unfunny? And you get a Netflix special. Well, I think some people that are hilarious to me
are unfunny to some other people. So it's crazy. That's perspective. Oh, OK. So you don't have to hate your life in order to not feel alive in it. Not feel like. Do not feel happy. Happy alive. Like have that vitality that we're looking for. What is the opposite of happy? I mean, you know, some people would say it's unhappy. I would say it's the... So the... Aliveness. Because think about when you just feel so alive. I mean, you're kind of giddy. Your energy's up. It's the vitality. So it's not sad. Happy and sad are not opposites. I don't think it's sad. I think it's kind of like a melancholy. It's like getting up and doing the same thing every day. It's monotony. So the opposite of happy is not feeling at all. Is that it? I feel like that... Feeling dead inside. Kind of. I mean, well, not dead. So for me, it's not because I do feel productive and I do feel like I'm moving when I sit
at the desk for like sometimes 10 hours and I'm doing things for the business, but there's no feeling of happiness. Like I'm not thinking happy. I'm thinking progress. Does that make sense? Yeah, that's the problem. I know. See, I have to... Someone once wrote us, they literally wrote us and said, stop using your podcast for therapy. However, as you can see, I need to use this podcast in order to have deep conversations with my husband because otherwise he doesn't hear me. Between you and Brunei Brown. Thank you for putting me in the same category as Brunei Brown. It's between you and Brunei Brown. I greatly appreciate that. I understand my feelings, but I don't always understand when I'm not noticing them. Does that make sense? Okay. Well, I have been saying. I know. I know.
I hear you now. For a while, you do hear me now. You hear me. Okay. Janna, just for the first time this morning said, I never listen. Oh, what do you mean? Probably wasn't the first time. All right. Let's wrap this up, Jason. Put it in a nutshell for us. So I think a lot of us right now feel like we have a good life and we're just not happy in it. And it's about what are we noticing and then defining what we want to experience in our life and then looking at different ways to experience that and not evaluating it at the end of the day, but labeling it at the beginning of the day and then looking for it or moving towards that experience throughout the day. I also think sometimes it just comes down to making a choice. Yes. What do I want to feel? I want to feel happy. So feel that. Be that. Do things that make you happy. Do things that make you feel alive.
Sometimes we have to start with the action. A lot of times we want to start with the thought, then the feeling, then the action, but start with the action, then the feeling, then the thought. Laughing yoga. Laughing yoga inspires the laughter and the feeling. And then all of a sudden you're just uncontrollable laughing and you sometimes you don't know why even though you do attribute it back to the fact that you were just laughing for nothing. Yes. What he's trying to say is which comes first. The smile. Yeah. The chicken or the egg or the smile or the laughter or the laughter than the smile. So our physiology often will change the chemistry in our bodies. So big. That makes sense. 100%. Thank you for joining us. Keep living lucky. Do something that makes you feel alive.
