Golden State Warriors Fight Hard, Fall To Oklahoma City Thunder

About this episode

Golden State Warriors battle hard but fall short against the Oklahoma City Thunder, as Gui Santos emerges with a breakout 22-point, 11-rebound performance. With stars like Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler sidelined, Charlie Walter spotlights Kristaps Porzingis’ return and the impact of missing key contributors, while dissecting how the Warriors nearly pulled off a comeback before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s clutch shooting and 15 free throw attempts sealed the Thunder’s narrow 104-97 win. Key takeaways include the Warriors’ evolving offensive options with Porzingis in the mix, Draymond Green’s efficient shooting, and the ongoing struggles with foul calls under current NBA rules—sparking debate about league officiating. Charlie Walter also analyzes Brandin Podziemski’s consistency, the significance of Gui Santos’ development for the franchise’s future, and Steve Kerr’s strategy moving forward. Will the Warriors’ depth be enough as playoff hopes hang in the balance?

Fandall, play your game. You can check out the show on YouTube and wherever you get your audio podcasts. My name's Charlie Walter, host of the show. Covered the team for 957, the game and CBS News, Bay Area, and the past. You can't be mad at the effort that the Warriors showed in the second half today. 104 to 97 was the final tally. Okay, C led by 13 at halftime. The Warriors were able to cut it down to three entering the fourth quarter, and it was nip and tuck back and forth the entire fourth.

With Gisanto, it's actually having a chance to take the lead down 97, 99 with, I think a minute to go in the game. He misses the three, and then it's Shay Gildes Alexander, SGA on the other end, hitting a ridiculous step back three that if he didn't hit the shot, he probably would have been head into the line for three free throws because it was that kind of night. That's a big storyline on today's show is SGA getting to the free throw line. Why Steve Kerr does not like the rules we're going to hear from him. Chris Daps poor Zingas back for the Warriors playing in his second game with Golden State. We will hear from Chris Daps coming up on the show, and then we got to talk a lot of Gisanto's who was excellent for the lead in the team with 22 points. But based on what we saw from the Warriors the last time the Skeleton crew rolled out against this team and lost by legitimately like 65 points. You can't be mad at the effort.

That was not a thundered team at full strength. They were missing Heart and Stein. They were missing, I mean, go up and down the list, Jalen Williams, the J. Dubb, not Arkansas Jalen Williams, but they were missing Santa Clara, Jalen Williams, the better the two, and they were also missing at home grins. They didn't have their dudes, but the Warriors were missing Dan Thinny Melton, they were missing Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, as we know, Seth Curry, Moses Moody continues to miss games at this point as he's day to day. I will say this, Seth Curry appears to be getting pretty close. He was questionable as was Chris Daps poor Zingas for tonight's game for Saturday's game, and it was only Chris Daps poor Zingas who played in the contest. I thought poor Zingas didn't look great overall, but I did think that his ability to command double teams was apparent, and it changed the way the Warriors were able to play. Every time he caught it in the post, he's like a safety net, kind of like how Jimmy Butler

was when you had Jimmy down on the block, give him the ball late in the shot clock, he's going to make something happen. Chris Daps is kind of the same way in that he's patient on the post. He created his own shot a few times, but for the most part, he was just passing out of the post, finding open shooters, and the Warriors were able to knock down some of those shots, 14 of 45, good for 31 percent in the game. Dremont had an excellent game shooting the basketball. He scored 16 points, went four of six from three. Santos struggled, I mentioned he missed that one late that would have been a huge three-point shot, but you can't get mad at Kisanto, see a 22 and 11, but did struggle from three at two of nine. Horford was 0 of three, Brandon Pajewski was 3 of 10 from deep in the game. Only owns one of two. Porzingus missed all three of his attempts, Peyton hit one, LJ Cryer, again, placed some pretty good minutes. He had six points in his 17 minutes, but Chris Daps Porzingus, he believes at this point,

this mystery illness that we all think is pots, and then Steve Kerr comes out and says, you know, it's not pots, and then Dunlavy says it's confusing, and it's just, look, hippo balls, they make everything confusing, you can only say so much about certain things, but one thing is for certain is that we have no idea. We have no idea what's going on with Chris Daps Porzingus, however, you do see him out there pretty winded, went 23 minutes tonight, which I thought was pretty good for him, but you can tell, even in the post-game presser, just some heavy breathing, probably has something to do with that. This illness he's dealing with, but he believes that for the rest of the season, he's going to be just about good to go. Now, as I say that, Steve Kerr has come out and said that the plan is to rest Chris Daps on Monday night in Utah, play him on Tuesday at home against the bowls after he went for 23 minutes in the game today, but he played 23 and then told Steve Kerr that he felt fine,

and he's ready to do this thing the rest of the way. Everybody's coming back to what I mean to be, just got honestly just one workout in and felt very decent, so I just want to get up, like, personally getting traded somewhere else, like I wanted to get out there as soon as possible, and obviously sitting out a couple games was like stinging me a little bit, you know, but today it was okay, I just leave a little heavy and shouts a little bit, not in a good rhythm yet, and missing some three goals and all that, but we're going to build from this game, and I think I'll be looking better and better with each game. How would you describe what you kind of went through the last couple weeks and, you know, I guess why you weren't able to be out there? Yeah, some health stuff a little bit, and I believe I will be healthy now, obviously, this is what I really feel, and not to sell anything because obviously I thought you've

been out and out again, but this time I really feel that this is it, and yeah, finally you're getting out there like healthy, you know, I was like playing through this, I think now this will be, obviously, 20 games left or so, but in the regular season, so I want to catch a really good rhythm, and then see if I can do something in the both season, so I'm excited for the opportunity, excited to play with these guys, and, I didn't see a ton of the rim protection from Chris Taps for Zingas today. He ended up with one block in his 23 minutes. On the perimeter, there were a few times where he got cooked, just, you know, laid on close-outs, not getting the three-point shooters or just getting beat off the dribble, but that's to be expected. He hasn't played much basketball as of late. We all know the defender that he is capable of being, and more so, what I'm looking at

in today's game is just the fit, like you see with this team being fully healthy, and that includes Jimmy, because the plan is, at least we think, for Chris Taps for Zingas to be a warrior next year on some sort of a team-friendly deal, he's not making a lot of money next year with how much basketball he's missed in the last 12 months, that's just not going to happen. So, if you do bring back Chris Taps for Zingas, that's the good news. You're getting a prototype that makes sense for your team on a pretty team-friendly deal. And you see it. You see visions of him and Jimmy on the floor together, both being able to get to the higher low post and, you know, create from that spot. I mean, it just felt like when he had the ball on the block and the doubles came. You never see that. And the last three years, you just do not see the warriors playing out of that position. And having Steph back, and potentially Jimmy back as well, with poor Zingas on the floor, if that ever comes to fruition, it's got to be at least a little bit exciting.

What is not exciting is watching Shay Gyoza, Alexander get to the free throw line 15 times. That was your difference in the game, Charity Stripe. Oklahoma City went 23 of 24, good for 96%. Steve Kerr was not happy about all the free throws that Shay Gyoza, Alexander, got. We'll talk about that. Coming up on Knocked On Dubs. Destroy Jimmy and Domino. I know Jimmy drinks is great wine. Today's episode's brought to you by America's number one sportsbook. That's Fandall. College basketball is nonstop this time of the year. We got big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night from early tip-offs to the late night West Coast shootouts. There's always action on the board. And now Fandall's giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger potential wins with a college basketball parlay profit boost. You could build any college hoops parlay you want, rivalry games, ranked matchups, take all the 12 seeds over the fives, because we know that's always a smart play.

Look at the odds around the teams and see what you like. Go safe, go bold, ride with the team you've been following all season, it's your parlay, your style, now with more upside behind it. Head to fandall.com to get started, that's fandall.com, fandall, play your game. Let's get back to the program. And buddy, stop trying to dribble the ball. This isn't a gang set with the Lockdown Mavericks podcast. This message is a paid partnership with Apple Card. I love that I can run up to 3% daily cash back on every purchase of my Apple Card, which can be automatically sent to my high yield savings account through Apple Card right in the wallet app. On my iPhone, I can use Apple Card with Apple Pay basically everywhere I go. Man, shake, you'll just how Xander has been doing this for a while now. It's craftiness, it's good body control, it's good wear with all of knowing how to play

the game with the current rules. And most importantly, it's when he does get to the free throw line. He is excellent, 14 of 15, you know, if he got to the charity strike 15 times and only had nine of them, it's not as big a deal. But when the Warriors go 11 of 18 and Shay guilds us out Xander by himself goes 14 of 15, the team going 23 of 24, that is legitimately your difference. Oklahoma City gets 12 more points at the line. They win the game by seven. It's frustrating. We've been calling Shay foul merchant for years. It's not his fault that he knows how to play the game with the current rules. But I want to hear from you in the comments and in the chat. Some of the calls on Nate Williams specifically just seemed a little odd to me. It didn't seem like there was much contact. No challenges on those plays from Steve Kerr. But I want to hear from you how many of those are actually fouls when SGA is getting to the line and torching you, Steve Kerr, he doesn't like how soft the NBA has gotten.

I mean, it's gotten to the point where you can't really play physical defense. Well, he's incredibly clever and you know, he knows exactly how to draw contact and that's all within the rules and I'm probably Shay, I'm probably the rules. So I just think that we, as a league, too much off-arm where we hardly allow the defense to do anything guarding the ball. So if you allow the offensive player to push off with the off-arm, to create space, it makes it really tough defensively because you can't put your arm in. If you put your arm in, everybody around the league will do what Shay does and James Harden does. They'll hook your arm and they'll do that and it's all part of the rules. Also, more power to all the individual players, but as a league, we need to adapt and adjust. The players are just year after year, they just take advantage of the rules and are smart

and they know what they're doing. Yeah, I mean, simply put, if you have your hands straight up on defense, I don't care if you're an offensive player jumping into the defenders, it's not a foul to me. It's not a foul. Debating has gotten a little bit out of control. There needs to be some sort of let the guys play, especially late in shot clocks. There needs to be situational referee training as well, in my opinion, where it late in the shot clocks, like specifically the play where Dremont, Green, Fowd, Shay, early in the first half, like that possession was going nowhere. The Warriors play incredible defense and sure that specific possession, I do think that Dremont not only got him on the hand, but also basically did what someone did to me at Moscone, stepping on my foot, breaking my meditarsal, or I guess fracturing my fifth meditarsal about three weeks before my wedding. Don't worry about it. I did get down to the altar, not in a boot to Kylin, but that's the kind of thing that

needs to be called a foul, but other plays in the game, specifically the Nate Williams ones. I didn't see any contact there for the most part. Any contact that wasn't initiated by Shay, and he's the best at it in the game right now. There are a lot of other dudes like Luca, and I mean, James Hardin was just mentioned in that same sentence from Steve Kerr, but it's gotten a little bit ridiculous, 15 free throws in a game. I mean, I'm not, let's say I'm a ticket, I'm a game goer. I bought tickets, courtside, spent a ton of money, wanted to watch high level basketball. I'm not there to watch 15 free throws from Shay guilds as Alexander, make him beat you. If it's an obvious foul, sure, but situational, late in the shot clock, throwing up junk jumping into people, I don't like it personally. Now when Jimmy Butler got to the free throw line the same way for the Warriors, I had no issues with it.

Call me biased, certainly, but there is no better example of foul baiting in the NBA in my opinion than Shay guilds as Alexander, awesome player. Again, it's by the rules, so hey, he's smart. He is definitely smart. A geess Santos, not only smart, but at this point, he's gotten to be a good player, folks. The stat line from G today, 22 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, and only one turn ever. He's got a couple of steals, too. The Warriors getting this guy for $5 million a year for the next three years is a steal. Is a steal. I want to give you guys the splits of what he's done in the last month, basically, since Curry went down. So in October, he was averaging five minutes per game. All of last year, not all of last year, but most of last year, he was considered the human victory cigar.

Like it was him and Pat Spencer that you put in a game when it was over. When the other team was down by so much, let's give Geess Santos some run. He actually played postseason minutes. He, remember, infamously, was given the green light, per sources over Jonathan Caminga because Steph Curry trusted him down the stretch in a gaming, it's the nuggets last season. So he had some moments last year, but began this season, kind of where he began the year before. And that is way at the back of the bench, five minutes per game in October, eight minutes per game in November, up did a little bit in December, but wasn't doing a whole bunch. I mean, he was averaging three points a game into the new year, three points per game. Like literally, January turns it up a little bit in 14 games. The average is six points, but since the all start break. And let's, let's just go February, March, in general, in 12 games. He's averaging like 13 points per game. He's shooting it upwards of 40% from three.

I mean, post all start break, 37.5% from three, 14 points per game, 6.6 rebounds. And you just look at his game logs of what he's done recently because this was a guy not that long ago that I actually think over the summer. On a show, I said that Guy Santos is not someone that's ever going to give you 20 points. I'm wrong. He gave you 20 tonight. He gave you 22. I didn't think that was the type of player he was offensively. I always saw Guy Santos as an energizer guy, someone that's going to get better at time on the defensive side of the ball that has a nose for rebounding that's tough, that has a very high cue. One of the best passers, if not the best passer on the team, but I never saw him as someone that could get you buckets, Guy gets buckets, folks. In the last, let's go, let's cherry pick eight games, seven of those games. He's reached double figures, 22, 14, 14, 17, 15, 17, 17, extend that.

In the last 13 games, he's reached double figures 11 times with 16, 15, 18, 13 before that extended to 16 games. It's like 13 of the last 16. He is a double figure merchant at this point. He's getting there every single night. He's doing it on a fish and shooting. I mean, he had one tough game against the Clippers where he went to evade. Otherwise you go down his box score. He shot above 40% in every game since the 26th of January, since the 20, and that was a game against Minnesota where he shot 38% from the floor. And then before that, you got it all the way down to the seventh of January against Milwaukee where he shot 33%. It's because he went one of three from the floor. Guy Santos is an efficiency monster tonight's game eight of nineteen 42% again, the three point shot was not excellent. And he's actually struggled in the month of March. He's just three of his first 16 in the month of March.

But Guy Santos is good folks. Warriors got a good one in Guy Santos. And regardless of how the season goes, the rest of the way, if they are not able to get into the playoffs and they wind up going down is the eight seed in the play-in. One thing that came from this year that is a big time positive is you have a dude locked in that not only is good as a secondary guy, but now we're seeing as one of the dudes. Second, third, sure, on maybe not a great team. But he showcasing the fact that he can go out and legitimately give you efficient buckets can crash the glass and give you a double, double against arguably the best team in basketball. So Guy Santos being locked up to a three year contract, that is a huge win for the Warriors. And you see it again tonight, why I mean, you see why he went from second-rounder to last guy on the bench, G-leagor to legitimate NBA starting caliber guy, whether the team's

good or bad. I mean, this guy can carve out a role on any team in the NBA, I truly believe that. He's been really good for a long time. At a certain point, you are what your box scores and what the viewers' eyes tell them you are. And that's the case. As for Brandon Bajewski, a little bit more difficult, he had a good game overall, had a very good third quarter, struggled mightily to start the game, hit, missed like three three pointers in the first couple of minutes. But again, 17 points, six rebounds, six assists, protected the basketball, had a couple of good steals. I want to talk about Pod's game coming up, a preview of what's ahead for the Warriors. Final score from O.K.C. on a Saturday night. It's the Thunder 104 in the Warriors 97. The show will continue after this. And most importantly, he's a dog. We need more dogs. All right, folks, get ready for the five hour energy flavor draft.

With 18 different flavors to choose from, including new options like confetti crays, fruity rainbow, or cotton candy, there's something for everyone. The board is set, the flavors are ready, and I've got my number one pick in the five hour energy flavor draft. I've mixed it up here and there. But as of today, I have a new favorite flavor because I actually tried it today. It's the sour apple. Tastes like those bang energy sour apples. The apple that bites back, a crisp, tangy taste, deliciously tart, bold, a little sweet, a lot sour. That's my number one pick. I love it. Five hour energy shots give you a boost with zero sugar. They have a lot of upcoming flavor innovations planned. And who knows? Give me a flavor on the show in the comments. Maybe I'll send it into corporate and you never know. Al Horford had an incredible block. I don't know why this is sticking out my mind but I think it was Jared McCain from the corner tried to put one up and Horford just stuff that thing in the third row. Aside from that there weren't a ton of moments.

I did think late. Horford was going to go one on one. He had it on the post four or five feet away from the bucket and I believe that is the possession that turned into the Gsanto's miss three and I would have liked to see Horford put it up strong there with a little bit of a mismatch but you know Horford's had a good year. All things considered not his best game his best games typically come when he knocks down some threes and he was all three in the game today but again he gets some good news with Christoph Porzingh is playing even if it wasn't his most efficient game with just nine points. We all know what Porzingh is can do. We know the prototype that he is and how he can change his team if healthy. The question is can he stay healthy and it's truly one game at a time so to see him on the floor for 23 minutes albeit winded minutes. He was a plus six when he was on the floor you'll take that. I thought Dremond Green played really well played really well some careless turnovers

including one in the first half where he was four feet away from the basket and any other player in the leagues put it up and he like pitched it like he was you know Joe Montana pitching in the backfield or something two feet away to Gsanto's it hit off Santos his knee and went out of bounds for a turnover and that just goes to show you some of the yips that Dremond has when he's close to the basket but we've known this for a while that's not his game protecting the ball has been somewhat of a difficulty this year for Dremond he had four turnovers but overall played good defense efficient offensively grabs some boards facilitated had some steals and you know was was flat even on the plus minus so nothing bad to say there really nothing bad to say about most of the dudes today I mean they fought hard Nate Williams who was a minus 12 a team worst he was someone that I didn't

think really impacted the game a ton the good way I mentioned the fouls that sent shade goes as Alexander to the line missed a couple open threes miss some shots around the rim he's had some good games today was not necessarily one of them I would like to see cryer get more than 17 minutes personally I would like to see him get 25 sure that maybe a little crazy for a guy that's on a two way deal but at this point I just think he's young enough and inexperienced enough and looked good enough in the preseason to where I want to see more from him and he continues to impress me plays hard do just knows how to hoop and had six points in the game today GP to didn't notice a ton of him aside from the rebounds he had seven points but more impressively 12 rebounds the smallest guy on the floor was all around the basket Brandon Bajimski however he had 17 the three point shot is not good as of late I've always looked at pods as someone that I think can be really really good if he can be a 40%

shooter from three but he needs to be a good shooter to take his game to the next level I think that is the swing skill he's going to be a fantastic role player for a long time assuming he can stay healthy because he does all the little things I know it's cliche for someone like him but I mean just look at the stats 17 six and six that is the definition with two steals that's the definition of doing a little bit of everything you saw the anticipation defensively early when he stole it went the other way and slammed it you see him get off the ball like Steve Kerr mentions and then when he does get off the ball make plays happen through his cutting and through his getting it off the catch and taking it the rim those sorts of things but his ceiling is limited if he's not a really really good shooter because he's not quick enough he's not strong enough and you can only rely so much on craftiness if you're not a really good shooter from both the mid range and from three point range and some of his threes that he takes just don't look good like three they're beautiful

or they're clank magees and he has been doing a lot of clank magees as of late I don't know why I even called it that a clank magee but I kind of like it anyways post all star break from three point range he's down to 34% he was hovering around 40% for a lot of this season you know December shot at 44% from three and since then his really struggled January shot at just 31% in his 16 games shot at just 25% in the month of February and he's gotten up to a decent start in his couple of games in March most notably in in their last game he was he was red hot and that's why the stats are at 50% for the month but not great all things considered when you're talking about a guy that shoots a lot of them shot five and a half threes per game in the month of February and just

25% but you see the the charity striped numbers which are about 76% on the season that doesn't scream elite shooter he just may not be a great shooter I think he shot at 44% from three in Santa Clara and believe I've done a segment on this before where he was a good shooter in high school and how I think he was close to 40% last year 38 something along the lines of that but he's got to be above league average and as a lady has not been above league average he needs to hit open threes at a consistent clip and if he can get those numbers up just a little bit I think he's got a nice little future scoring the basketball on his hands because this is now what 24 points per game in the month of March he's at 17 points per game in the eight all-star game post all-star game games so he he could

scored a little granted can't hit that 30 point mark one of these days he's going to do it in that account that's on Twitter that you've all seen if you're die hard Golden State Warriors fan that said I'll come out of retirement and tweet when Brandon Pajewski scores 30 I think that accounts been dormant since 23 but he has it in him I truly believe he has it in him it's just an inconsistency thing I mean you saw it in the third quarter how many points did he score in the third quarter in this game today it felt like a ton and turns around and just disappears in the fourth and he had disappeared in the the first quarters well he wasn't shooting them all well so that's just something where you you hope it's the inexperience is just in his third year he's you know 22 but I got to give you that same energy that I come with Moses Moody and with Jonathan Caminga sure they've been in the league longer but all three of those dudes at the same age at this point and I don't give Caminga Moody the past so I'm not going to give Pajewski the past

we still need more from BP still need more from him and it's just because we see the flashes we see the quarters where he looks really really good comfortable confident out there and then we see quarters where he throws up bricks and that's that's a forget the swing skill of shooting that's a swing player for the Warriors moving forward by moving forward I mean just next year with Steph Curry's contract expiring and Jimmy Butler's contract expiring and Dremon Greens contract expiring and frankly Brandon Pajewski's contract expiring like if I asked you right now as a restricted free agent what Brandon Pajewski is worth I'm sure we get numbers all over the map I have no idea what Brandon Pajewski would command what he would be asking for what the Warriors would be willing to pay him it's clear they very much like him but for his sake for the fan base is sake and for everyone's sake I just want to see it more consistently he's getting 39

minutes a night every day it feels like it's getting plenty of run and I mean this is now three straight games where he's gone for 22 26 and 17 you're not complaining about 22 26 and 17 but context matters he had 20 in the first half he had 20 in the first like eight minutes against the clippers and scored two in the next like 29 you know defense is tightened up on him and so did his game against the rockets very consistent effort overall with 26 and 9 that was just an incredible game but he follows it up with a really shaky first quarter against the the thunder and then you know picks it up in the second half but I just want to see it consistently getting to double figures it's been consistent 4 5 6 7 10 of his last 11 he's hit double figures in all those games except for one scored over 14 so Pajewski someone that you can rely on to put some some shots in and

hit in a decent clip I mean he's shooting 52% from the floor as a whole in the month of March shot 41% in the month of February which isn't great with 25% from three but I believe he hasn't in him I truly do I've been holding on to the to the call options for a while now when they're set to expire who knows because who knows how long he's going to be a warrior for with restricted free agency coming up but it's clear that dubs like him and I think for what he's making right now he has been a huge huge spark but still just need more from BP consistently and it all starts with his shooting I mean look back at that Lakers game oh of six from three can't have that when you're a shooter I believe he is a shooter and three of 10 today against the thunder wish one or two more would have gone down and potentially you get that win but when it was all said and done the warriors

with their final shots they were looking at Yee Santos and the thunder were looking at Shea Gildes Alexander that's your difference there's no closer right now that closer is Steph Curry and the question is when will Steph Curry be back appreciate y'all for tuning in for a late night show this is locked on warriors part of the Lockdown podcast network we will see you soon the ticket lady Jennifer of coups well many thanks good sir here is my discover card they accept a discover at Renaissance fairs yeah they do here discoverers accepted at the places that I love to shop get it with the times with the times you're playing the loot yeah and it sounds pretty good right discoverers accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide based on the February 2025 Nielsen report hey everyone this is Ross Jackson one of the hosts of the Lockdown podcast network if your group chats been a little quiet lately I want to invite you to come and join ours if you sign up for the everyday club you get access to the members only
