Live from ABC News headquarters in New York City, this is Good Morning America. We do begin here with the Labor Day weekend, get away, the diesel prices. They're at a record high now for the holiday and Matt Rivers has the pain at the pump, hey Matt. Hey, good afternoon, Gio. You know, it's one of those things the holiday weekend usually means at least two things, right? It means time off, good thing, traffic, not so good. And then this year you've got the bad thing unfortunately, which is gas prices overall. Let's start with diesel prices, which actually just hit a record high yesterday that continued into today.

1:05Diesel of course, not the fuel that you're putting into your car. Let's say to go to the gas station, at least for motor, to the grocery store, at least for most of us. But it is the fuel that powers the fleets of trucks and vans that carry the goods that we buy to the store, which means that that gets higher. It could mean higher prices for consumers. Right now, sitting at roughly just over 580, a gallon, that is an all time high and roughly $2 higher than at the same time last year. The price for regular gasoline at this point, nationally, $4.14 and counting. So unfortunately, you're dealing with high gas prices no matter what you look at at this point. But the high prices don't seem to be slowing Americans down, at least from traveling this weekend. TSA saying they're expected to screen 17 million passengers this weekend, 300,000 flights roughly taking off and touching down. And millions of Americans are set to hit the road when we're talking about the best times to drive. It would be anywhere outside or after 8pm today. And then tomorrow, you really want to try and avoid the afternoon hours. Sunday should be okay. Monday, you also want to avoid the afternoon hours.

2:06This is going to be one of the busiest travel weekends of the entire year, Cameron. Yeah, it sure is. And of course, I'm flying on Monday. Right now, of course, you're riding that bus weekend, but it's good to know it's always good to be prepared. Thank you for that now to Labor Day sales on tap this weekend. Elizabeth Shulls is tracking the savings for us. Elizabeth with overall prices going up. Is this the time to stock up on things like household essentials? It is on some stuff, Cameron, while you're waiting at the airport on Monday, you can scroll through some of these deals. You're going to go through here. So some solid deals that do make stocking up worth it right now, but you've got to be selective. And when you look at those household essentials over the past year, it is a category where prices have really spiked dishes and flatware, for example, up 10% cookware, up 6% tools and hardware. Cleaning supplies up 3%. So this Labor Day weekend, Amazon's promoting deals on staples. You've got diapers and wipes up to 20% off target by one get 125% off on laundry products. And Walmart has a big rollback on prices, focusing on groceries. They say this is for the end of summer.

3:09Barbecue, but you can stock up on non-parasables, hamburger buns, snacks, and soda. Also, it's still not too late for school supplies. One example we found is this Nike Lunch Box. It's $10 off at Coals right now selling for $22. And then there's a deal on where you can actually go to stock up. Group on. That is still a thing. If you sign up for Costco Gold membership there, it's $65. And when you sign up, you get a $20 digital gift card back. If you sign up for the Costco executive membership, you're getting a $40 gift card back camera. Kind of pays for itself. Yeah, I got a big cost for around myself. So outside of these staples, where are some of the other deals? You know, this is the time retailers want to get that summer inventory off their shelves. So think of outdoor furniture, grills, appliances, summer clothes. If you've got one of those big items on your list for your house, it's worth looking around right now. Way fair. We found this pretty crazy deal. 70% off Labor Day sales. So this patio set, it was $1,600 right now, $480. Also, good time to look for a new mattress. The best time for a mattress is usually around presidents weekend.

4:12But we are seeing some mattress deals up to 70% off brands like Ceely, Beauty Rest, Nectar. Pro tip there is if you're buying a mattress online, you actually want to ask that virtual chatbot to give you an even bigger discount. They are very responsive on these sales. And then you don't want to sleep on some outdoor gear. REI always has a big Labor Day sale 60% off right now, closed footwear, other gear too. I got to say selfishly super helpful for me, moved into a new place with very little. So this is the time to get some of that. That's what I was told about. Now on that note, though, is there anything that people should wait to buy? There are some things, especially with Black Friday starting earlier every year. Those sales are going to start pretty soon. And that's when we see the best deals on toys, games, electronics, like laptops and TVs specifically. And then also give some time for prices to drop for fall clothes and boots. Still pretty hot. Hold off on buying those winter clothes if you can for now guys. All right. 5:13Oh, it is American dominance. Absolutely. Of course, the hopes are high for the Americans. But the last time an American man and woman won the US Open in the same year was 24 years ago. So can it happen again this year? Well, experts say it's looking pretty good so far. Coco Gough is perhaps the best chance on the women's side. The fourth seed winning in straight sets overnight. The second set in a tiebreaker 18 year old Eva Yovic is becoming a force in women's tennis advancing to the third round with the straight set win. Madison Keys winning a thriller saving five match points to win in a third set tiebreaker to advance and 10th seeded Amanda and she's also needed three sets to advance the third round. The New Jersey native was a finalist a year ago in flushing. She's hoping to capture her first major this year over on the men's side. Ninth seeded Taylor Fritz onto the third round in straight sets. It was just total domination, right? Fritz losing only two games in the match. 20 year old American phenom learner TN taking on the oldest man in the draw and it's still not too old.

6:13We're talking about this on GMM this morning 40 year old Gail Montfields youth was served for short. TN with the straight set win and the big match everyone is looking forward to tonight is the William sisters playing their first round doubles match. So there's a lot of action, a lot of excitement, a lot to watch. It's going to be great. Pop news and we've got real games to give it to us. It's an excellent Friday pop news. The series starring Emmy Rossum just aired its season one finale just a couple days ago. Now Disney and Hulu are revealing that viewership of the finale was up and astonishing 90% from the July premiere with over 43 million hours streamed online. Thankfully the furious fandom has a lot to be happy about because season two is on the way for now. All eight episodes of Furious are streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. And if you know how season one ends it has to have a season two. It has to have a season two. And people have caught on to this because they're just getting all of the Geo Benitez love and hearing about it. Because it's so good. Yeah. Yeah.

Rescuers have found two trapped workers alive in a tunnel nine days after that catastrophic flood. The men were carried to safety, covered in mud, both airlifted to the hospital, but in stable condition. They were working at a power plant when the flood hit. Crews still hope to find more survivors in the air pockets within those tunnels. But nearly 1,300 people have been confirmed dead. And more than 5,000 are still missing, including 75 Americans.

13:2766-year-old Tim Andrews is the first of what doctors hope will be. Many patients helped by animal to human organ transplants. Andrews received a genetically edited pig kidney, which kept him alive for 271 days, until a human donor kidney became available. It's the longest survival ever following a pig organ transplant. Doctors say his case shows pig kidneys could serve as a bridge for nearly 90,000 people currently waiting for a kidney transplant. Tesla has unveiled its new cyber cab. The electric two-seater, with no steering wheel, is part of the company's push to make Tesla a dominant force in driverless vehicles. Hey, Bear, good afternoon, you guys from Charlotte, North Carolina. I've got my gear ready to go for game day. But it turns out the team is providing gear of a different kind to make sure that Caroline is stays winning on. And off the field. The Carolina Panthers are kicking off the regular season with high hopes and their sights set on a Super Bowl win. But their vision for the Carolinas extends beyond the field. Panther's owners David and Nicole Tapper bringing no cost eye care through their foundation to thousands of elementary and middle school students. They receive exams and prescription exams. All through a partnership with the nonprofit Vision to learn. David and Nicole Tapper Foundation and the Panthers organization have made our work possible here in Charlotte. Panthers players even wear the glasses themselves, bringing the excitement of the mission to school assemblies. When the children are come back and for the first time they have their glasses on.

15:32And they're going to have a great time. As they are, today, they've come back running without any responsibilities. When the children are come back and for the first time they have their glasses on. I've always made it such a big deal. Because now, you know, I'm like, you can read the board. In the last six years, the partnership resulting in more than 165,000 eye screenings and more than 50,000 donated glasses. A third of the kids, one in four kids at any school. needs glasses. But in the schools we go to, 90% of the kids don't have the glasses they need to see the board read a book or Participating class. For third graders like Olivia, wearing her new glasses opened up a whole new world. I barely can see and then when I put the glasses on it just like it just went like, boom and I can see. She is able to read the letters on the board now. She wasn't able to see what the teacher was writing.

16:32But now she's able to so that's amazing. The Panthers hoping to continue carrying out their vision this season on and off the field. Yeah, and we have such a special group with us here this afternoon. If you were watching GMA this morning, you saw we had not won, but two surprises. One of them going to everyone here, all these kids by the way have received glasses through vision to learn and all of these kiddos received regular season ticket games to catch the Panthers in action. Were you guys excited about that? I think that speaks for itself. The other big surprise being that David and Nicole Tepper are donating an additional $3.4 million to the vision to learn foundation to expand their outreach throughout the Carolinas. So we have Ann Hollister here, the president of the foundation here to speak more on that. What's this money going to do for the group? And the David Nicole Tepper Foundation and the Panthers have made our work possible here in Charlotte for the last eight years.

17:35And now we're going to be able to expand our program to Raleigh Derm and Start and Work and help another 40,000 kids. It really is incredible. And one thing that I think people would really love to know that's super special about the kiddos that received these glasses is it's not just any pair of glasses that they get. They actually get to choose exactly what kind of pair they receive. They do and you'll see lots of Panther glasses on the group here from Charlotte, but it's really, you know, we're in, we're in 18 states in DC and it's really just an aha moment every time the kids get the glasses. They put them on, they take them off and they look over and go, I didn't know the street had leaves. I didn't know it said Panthers on the stadium. Their creative arts and these are this weekend with the 78th Prime Time Emmy Awards, a scheduled for Monday, September 14th and Page Six Senior Reporter, Carlos Greer is here. And he's got some predictions. Welcome, Carlos. Thank you for having me. This is absolutely. It's going to be an Emmy Smackdown like you've never seen here. Yeah, it's so easy. So many like there's so much television to watch. But we're going to have you take us to some of the front runners. So listen, so it's old versus new. So the pit is leading the pack with 25 nominations, followed by hacks with 24. And then you have the newer shows like Widow's Babe, which is shockingly received 19 nominations.

20:46And followed by that is Puribis with 18. Oh, excellent. You know, in Noah, he's up for lead actor in a drama. And I think Noah, he is going to get it. It's a very popular show and the Emmys love popularity. If history matters, it proves time and time again, the popularity matters. And so everyone's talking about this show. It had an even bigger season this year. Last year, it was massive. So I'm going with the pit. I was going to say like everyone's talking about the pit. But there is a lot to talk about a lot of television right now, a lot of shows. And one of the real big matchups here, I'm watching this one closely. Because I love Lisa Kudrow. I watched the comeback. I also love Jean Smart, Love Hacks. How's that going to play out? So Jean Smart, if she wins, she's nominated for Best Lead Outstanding Actress in a Comedy for Hacks. She's won every single season. So if she's not incredible, it's unheard of. If she wins this season, she will be the only female star to win consecutively for every season of her show.

21:47And Hacks, you know, that's my favorite show within the past five years. But like you mentioned, Lisa Kudrow, the comeback lives up to its name. You know, it was premiered in 2005. It was canceled, came back in 2014. Now it's back and it's nominated for an Emmy. So she could win this year. But I am rooting for Jean Smart. It had the ultimate, we have to give Deborah Vance the ultimate sendoff. And that final season, she was so good. And okay, okay. So you've been watching this for such a long time. Were you surprised by any of the nominations or even some of the snows? Well, you know, I was actually surprised that Widow's Bay got 19 nominations. It's a slow burner. I literally just started watching it a few weeks ago. But it's an incredible show. I'm rooting for Del Dickey because, you know, she's an underdog. And it's nice to see a seasoned star who has paid her dues actually get the recognition. So that was shocking. But also Paul Anthony Kelly, he was not nominated for lead actor in love story. And everybody talked about that show. That's really shocking. Yeah, especially if you lived in New York City, you could not escape it. Tours were flocking to New York City to recreate JFK and Carolyn's date night.

22:49Everyone was on a bike suddenly. Yeah, that's really right. We're in the house backwards. Well, we talked about Gene Smart earlier, but it also could be a big year for Harrison Ford, who's never won an Emmy. Could this be his year? You know, he was nominated for the first time last year. I am hoping that he wins his first Emmy this year. I got to tell you, I didn't admit. I cried last year when he won the Sack Lifetime Chief in awards. So I am rooting for a Harrison Ford speech. I'm getting my tissues ready. But, you know, he's going up against his co-star, Michael Uri. I've worked with him before. And he's a really cool guy. So it'd be nice to see him win. But I want Harrison Ford to take it. I want the moment between the two, whichever one of them wins. I want to see that moment. Well, a lot of people are watching Dancing with the Stars. They saw the big reveal right here on GMA earlier in the week. Is this going to be it? Is this going to be like, now we're back a decade later, take it home the trophy? It is amazing what's happening with Dancing with the Stars right now. It's like 2005 all over again. First nomination in 10 years.

23:50And it's having this huge cultural resurgence. So I do think that it is going to win. It's, you know, I think it has some competition with RuPaul's Drag Race and Traders. But, you know, it's a phenomenal comeback. It has this newer audience. It's a broken record. It's made history with its viewership this year. Yep. And so, you know, it's going to be amazing to see Dancing with the Stars. Finally, Gets an award. And you alluded to this already. But you mentioned that popularity as history kind of proves with the Emmy's popularity does tend to kind of go where the Emmy's dropped. So, I mean, like you said, it's back. It's popular. It's huge on social media. It could be Dancing's year. I mean, I'm a little, yeah. You know what? But the people who are involved in Dancing are such good humans. They really are. The, the, the pros, everybody who is a part of that show, they're just, you want them to succeed. You do. And people want feel good TV. And that's what Dancing with the Stars delivers. You want to be in, in front of your TV, voting for those contestants and watching our favorite stars. I mean, like you said, we've just announced a bunch of 90s acts

24:52who are on the show this season. Or people love to live that nostalgia and see these people get out there and dance. I'm just amazed that you can watch all this television. I love your content. Two of her classmates who say they were inspired by horror movies were convicted. And we're now hearing from them and others in the Scream Murder, a true teen horror podcast. I spent a lot of time working on the dropout and felt like it opened up so many opportunities

26:53to tell a story. But what made you want to do this format after already going through the documentary? With a three-part series, you are limited to time. And this case, I think, is Pat what agrees. It's just so singular by how deep it goes in the podcast. We all agreed that we just needed another series, a deeper dive, wider in scope, 20 years in the making of when this crime was committed. And the podcast format just allowed us to do a lot more. And there was just so much more that we weren't able to include in the documentary. It's not just more the way you can treat the time that you have is also different. When you're doing a three-part documentary, it was comprehensive, but you have to go forward through a story. In the podcast, we'll pick out something of interest and go over it again and say, what will one's to take a minute and look at this a little closer, which is a little difficult to do in a documentary. And you both have so much experience doing documentaries and true crime. What was it about this particular case that said,

27:55you know what, we've got to do something with this? Well, there's a few factors. I think anybody that has any familiarity with the documentary or the podcast, we'll look at this tape that Brian Draper and Tori Adam check made before and after the murder. And it is a very shocking bizarre video. So that is sort of like the lure, if you will, but the story is very rich itself. It happens in a little town in Idaho and it affected everybody in this town to this day. When we went to shoot the documentary, you know, you got your camera out and people would say, oh, what are you guys doing? Every single person that we talked to, some of whom were not alive when this happened, knew this story and had some kind of connection to it. So it has a lot of elements that make you want to explore it. We also talked to some of the friends of Cassie,

28:55Brian and Tori who had never spoken before. So after 20 years, they were more apt to talk and so we wanted to get that element to. There's so much to take from this powerful story. And one of the things you said, Pat, is it shows the great detective work, but not only in finding the killers, but also in that they prevented more deaths. Yeah. Yeah, that, go ahead. I was gonna say like I just think that detectives and one of the reason I think were gravitated towards true crime is that these guys are unsung heroes, men and women, you know, they walk into a room and they have to absorb the crime. But it's mission impossible for them, you know? It's like a lot of times the clues stop at the front door and then they have to go back out into the world and figure out what happened. And we've seen so many families that we've worked with over the years and how they view the homicide detectives, they are superheroes to them. And they just so much credit because they are relentless, they are single-minded, find the person that did this and they will not stop. And some cold cases, they will still have pictures

29:56of the victims to this day. They never think about it. They've long retired. They're still thinking about the cases they couldn't at all. But in this case, what you were, I think referring to, is the list that they had, Brian and Torrey had. Of other names. Of other classmates that they wanted to kill. They planned to kill. If you watch, it's part of the shock of this tape. You know, you could say, well, this was a fantasy that these kids were playing roles on this video, but they actually did it. So you can't just look at the list and go, ah, they were playing around. No. The judge in the case said, I know this is a harsh punishment, but how do I know if you get out someday, you're not going to do this. We can't take the chance. It's so chilling. And I think also as a parent, it's hard not to watch a story like this unfold and not feel, it's the worst nightmare. Yeah. Yeah. For me, I spoke to the perpetrators, Brian and Torrey. And right before I was about to start having these conversations,

30:59I realized that my older daughter, I have three children, it's just a few years younger than Cassie was when she was killing. And my daughter is a kid. And so being able to separate that emotion and anger that she was taken away at such a young age and then being able to still have conversations with Brian and Torrey and try to get to a truth like, how could they even want to, you know, commit such a crime?
