Give The Conflict A Shared Problem

About this episode

Conflict becomes harder when two people believe they are fighting against each other.

You think the problem is them.

They think the problem is you.

Every disagreement becomes a contest over who is right, who caused it, and who should change.

But sometimes the conflict becomes easier to solve when you stop making each other the problem.

Give The Conflict A Shared Problem explores how reframing disagreement can turn an argument into a problem two people can work on together.

Instead of:

"You never listen."

Try:

"We keep misunderstanding each other."

Instead of:

"You don't care."

Try:

"We haven't figured out how to make both of our needs work."

Instead of:

"This is your fault."

Ask:

"What keeps producing this result between us?"

The shift matters.

When the other person becomes the enemy, winning starts to matter more than solving.

You defend your position.

They defend theirs.

And the original problem gets buried underneath the argument.

A shared problem creates a different starting point.

Now both people can look at the same thing.

What is happening?

Why does it keep happening?

What part belongs to each of us?

What can we change?

What experiment could we try?

This doesn't mean pretending every conflict is equally shared.

Sometimes one person has clearly caused harm or refuses to take responsibility.

Accountability still matters.

But even then, the question can sometimes move from "How do I defeat this person?" to "What needs to change so this situation doesn't continue?"

The goal isn't to avoid disagreement.

Healthy relationships still have conflict.

The goal is to stop turning every disagreement into a battle between identities.

You and the other person don't have to agree on everything.

But you may be able to agree that the problem deserves solving.

Give the conflict a shared problem.

Then work on it together.
