Gigi's Law: Nursery Safety Rules Tighten After Tragedy

0:00On April 17th, 9-month-old Genevieve Meehan, known as Gigi, died at Tiny Toe's nursery in May, 2022, after a worker strapped her face, down on a beanbag, and left her alone for 90 minutes. That worker, Kate Roughly, got 14 years in prison last May for manslaughter. Now, the coroner is pushing the case to prosecutors over possible gross negligence by staff and the nursery itself. CCTV footage, logs and witness accounts, convinced the coroner to refer if her corporate manslaughter charges, too. She admitted it's a tough call, but necessary after deeper view. Prosecutors likely won't decide before the planned inquest this June, so that hearing could get pushed back. Gigi's parents, Katie Wheeler and John Meehan, fully back the move and say they're grateful for it. They've been fighting through their campaign for Gigi to fix nursery safety gaps, spotlighting issues like sleep setups, staffing, and swaddling that. The trial didn't fully cover. Their push paid off big time.
