Remember, you can hear my radio program daily on SiriusXM Triumph and connect with me 24-7 at Dr. Laura.com. Today we're gonna talk about something that I hate doing. That is getting into a disagreement with somebody. I hate it. And most of you probably hate it, too. Let's face it, everybody has their own thoughts, opinions, their values, perspective, disagreements are gonna be pretty common. Friends, coworkers, family, whoever. How do you get through these without World War III? And I'll admit, sometimes I was way too passionate. In a personal situation. And for the life of me, I could not understand why the other person was that bullheaded about something that seemed obvious.

So I've had that circumstance happen to me where my head would just explode because I just can't comprehend to anybody could think that. Whatever that was. I didn't seem so irrational. Well, there was or not, I'm not gonna argue that point right now. And counterproductive for the goal, which clearly that person and I shared. So there are sometimes no matter how good you are at this, how intelligent, how educated, how self-aware there are times your emotion is gonna make your head explode. At that point, you go to the end of my list of things to do and say, you know what? My head is exploded. I don't want to lose our friendship over this. I think we have the same goal in mind. We just are diametrically opposed in how you reach it.

It's not easy to do that. But in each case, when I did this with somebody I really cared about, they were just as happy to dump it as I was. And we hugged. When they left, I said to myself, I'm right, but it doesn't matter. I'm not in charge of the universe. I don't have power over the thing we were talking about. Whether she and I agreed or not would not change the universe. I'm passionate about something to the point of your head exploding is useless. And I recognize that and I share that with you folks. It's really important. You're gonna have knockdown dragouts about opinions about things. It's really ridiculous because neither one of you has any power.

So let's just say one of you is completely right and one of you is completely wrong. It ultimately doesn't matter to the universe. It just matters to egos. So how do you, how do you argue things? Well, the strongest argument is one that uses facts and logic instead of opinion. So you'll be in a situation where I understand that's an opinion, but here's the fact. Oh, and that happens. When you're in the middle of an argument, sometimes it's hard to remember all the facts. I've always been impressed with some of my cohorts and radio. Who seemed to remember fact after fact after fact after fact. My god, like they're having a computer printout. I've never able to do that.

I admire people who are able to do that. That's not something I have ever conquered. But the point is when you're talking about facts and logic because you're trying to make it clear this is not personal. You do not think that person is stupid. You just may think they do not have the fact, which is ignorance, not stupidity. Stupidity is having the facts and it's not using them very well. But ignorance just simply means you don't have the information. It's not an insult. You want not to put the other person down. You don't want to attack. This is her ideas and beliefs. It's not helpful. It's not productive. Just focus in on yourself. All the way I look at it for me is.

That's the place I go to instantly if somebody starts discussing religion with me, which, I don't know if it's really early if ever happens, but when it does, I go, well, I look at it this way. I live with it this way. I accept it this way. Because I frankly don't care about anybody else's religious point of view about things. It doesn't matter a wit to me because it's their personal journey. It's their personal relationship with their religious community or a deity. I am a cheering squad or anybody who holds religious beliefs dear. And in so does beautiful loving kind, sensitive things. When they're motivated and influenced by their religion to be good and wonderful as opposed to blowing people up, I'm very impressed.

And when their religious convictions help them survive tragedies, I'm very impressed. So what would be the point of arguing some points of religion? It doesn't matter. I can't believe some of you do that. Hey, it's Kelly Rowland. You may not know this, but I have Exema. So I get how it can steal your time. But why let Exema take over when you can talk to your doctor about Epglyce? Monday night football, plus pregame and postgame. NFL live, NFL prime time. Everything you need to stay on top of every game, every week. Unbelievable! And now NFL Network is on the ESPN app. More football, more coverage, more ways to watch. Football's on. All season long on ESPN and streaming on the ESPN app. I have a friend who is incredibly, profoundly, deeply religious and she believes that in times of strife, Jesus is with her. What idiot would challenge that?

Can't disprove it. You can't disprove it. And what idiot would challenge that if it helps that person survive? There are some of you who get snarky about things like that. O'Beat of the Masses. Look. O'Beat's do bad things to bodies and people on O'Beat's do bad things. Yes, some religions teach people bad things to do. We know which religions those are. But that's not the majority. Interestingly enough, as a sideline, the religion taking the biggest hit in a number of people walking away from it is Catholicism. And obviously that's because of the priestish, priest malastation issues that go all the way up to the Vatican.

The Pope's been asked to resign because the Pope knew about a lot of this and did nothing. I mean Pope after Pope has known about this and has virtually done nothing. So it seems like an organization functioning to spend zillions of dollars paying off families after their priests from the last kids. I mean this is terrible. As an organization, I disrespected completely. If you look at the Catholicism, it's wonderful. As usual, it's people who were the problem. The idea is good. The people, nah, not so good. But that's that's the religion evidently that has the biggest dropout rate right now and that's why. And raise your hand if you're surprised. I'm on radio, but I know but nobody's raising their hand. So you don't get personal and tell people their ideas stupid. You just say, well, I look at it this way and this is the facts I have and there can be no facts in religion per se just in behavior.

You also in an argument need to recognize the good. Rarely is anybody going to make a suggestion that is 100% sucky. There's usually some little piece of wisdom hidden there. So before you launch into your opinion and your argument, preface it with something that makes you look like you admire and respect something about what that person said. You know, I definitely agree with you that this is a serious problem that's hurting the family. Well, all of a sudden we're in agreement. And then you can follow it up with what if we looked at this as an alternative and you're almost inviting the, not almost you're inviting the person to be on a team with you as opposed to fighting them. Most important thing you can do in an argument is shut your mouth and listen. Oh my God, when people feel listen to your adrenaline level drops.

Most of the time you guys argue with each other. You don't listen. You just wait for your chance to speak again. Well, then you're not going to connect. See, in a good argument people have connected. But you can't connect if you're either either constantly defensive or assaultive. So please remember to listen. Take some part of what they have said and use it positively. Present some facts, present an idea that we could try. Let's try this. If it stinks, we'll know fast. And worst comes to shove. Just say to yourself, self. Is this worth how I feel, how this other person feels? And how the relationship is going to be damaged. Is it worth it? If the answer's yes, so be it.

If it's no, you find a way to say, you know what? Two of us are getting really hyper excited, getting very emotional. I'm worried we're going to get to the point where we heard each other's feelings. And I'd rather have your friendships and be right at anything. What a nice thing that would be to say to somebody, you know? My number 1-800-375-28-72.
