11:26About what this match means what sort of imprinted it is going to have on the greater American sports scene and what sort of interest there is In that game amongst Americans that's coming up in just a moment on sport nation mornings It's 16 minutes after nine on sport nation mornings Baltimore the setting for the final test of the greatest rivalry series between the all blacks and South Africa So just what can we expect when we dial in nine o'clock Sunday morning M&T Bank Stadium is the stage. It's the home of the Baltimore Ravens and the NFL holds over 70,000 people So this is a continuity of what we've seen in recent years with the all blacks playing the play Chicago Washington San Diego What do we expect from this one? We're going to talk to Justin Marshall soon on sport nation mornings But we thought we might get a more local perspective now Dan Power has been one of the voices of rugby in the United States for quite some time he originally from Australia But you would have heard him over the years calling the likes of Major League rugby And he joins us now in the show. Hey Dan how are you

12:29Did you a good morning? Thanks for having me. Oh mate. It's great to have you look have we know there'll be a lot of supporters Traveling with the two teams. What about interest in the states in this match? What what is it like? It's actually been great. It's it's funny. I just showed you talking about the original test back in Chicago I went the all blacks first Again, this sort of exploration into the US market sell out at soldier field, but a lot of that was expats traveling Um the interest now just in born and bred Americans are starting to increase significantly. So Should should set up for a really nice crowd there this weekend. Yeah Look, I've been to a few of those games luckily enough and you do notice it two groups of fans Traveling from all parts of the United States making a big weekend of it. These are real rugby in Genuine rugby enthusiasts coming from all parts not just the United States, but I've seen them from Canada Central America South America. It's it's quite a magnet, isn't it?

13:34It is and again, there's probably just been this huge void in world-class rugby as the games Has experienced some growth here. We just haven't had that world-class rugby and so when it comes People are more than happy to jump on a plane or get in a car for eight to ten hours to attend the match because it is It's it's a spectacle that they want to be involved in yeah, look at this a big stadium this that holds over 70,000 what have sales been like for the game? So pretty good. So what I've heard on the ground is The people running the event are pretty happy with weather at right now. Obviously Game day coming up they're expecting a lot more on game data come in Big tradition here in the US is always pregame, right? Like tailgating. I'm sure you've heard that It's a cultural phenomenon and if you haven't experienced it It's one of the most awesome things you ever do But pace yourself TJ. I will my warning to you if you tailgate pace yourself You will not survive the 480 minutes of the game. I made that mistake in the first NFL game and let me say some compromising photos out there now

14:41me sound asleep in the third one Because they are a little on the parking lot up beforehand, but so I know ticket sales Just shy of 60,000 so close to capacity and they're pretty confident. They'll they'll fill the house out there this weekend so All sets up well for hopefully a great World Cup in 2031 if we can continue that sort of excitement and enthusiasm around the event Well, I guess that's the thing here Dan right? I mean, you know, we're looking at 2031 and going How is rugby tracking in America and you get a game like verse and that is fantastic You're gonna go close to selling out a 70,000 seat stadium when the hometown team is not playing But you know, we know that MLR has had a few hiccups had a few issues over the last couple of years How do you think it is tracking a hit at 2031? Yeah, definitely some nutrition amongst the teams again If you look at the landscape here with sports tj's quite normal MLS went through a similar pattern in its infancy way back in the day

15:46um They've definitely stabilized and they're close to being a reasonably profitable league now And MLR has a pathway as a spring sport. It doesn't compete with The NFL or college football which in itself is you know, it's pretty much an economy as well. It's college sports landscape here So there's a window there. It's just about awareness and just a just a good example in about the game this weekend So a friend of mine has a son that goes to school with my son at a high school in Kansas So not really no one is a rugby hotbed Three years ago. I'd never seen the game rugby. He's son started playing They're going to the game this weekend. They've bought tickets at bought flights They're going to fly to Baltimore to go watch New Zealand Hopefully decimate South Africa And three years ago Have never heard of the game so I know it's a small example, but it's a good example of kind of what rugby is Slowly starting to do here. Yeah, look I remember back to the first time they played at soldier field what a great experience

16:47It was going to that iconic stadium. It's just such a magnificent stadium And there were I think it was close to that 60,000 and I interviewed Todd clever the USA captain after the game of course we knew because he played out here quite a bit and that got Absolutely pumped But he couldn't stop smiling because he never thought he would live to see the day where he played in the United States in front of 60,000 people And I think from the point of view of people in here in New Zealand you've got to kind of understand Just the scale of it compared to what normally has happened to rugby in the past in terms of crowds 100% TJ. And that I think people will look back and see that as one of the major turning points to rugby going professional because alongside you in the crowd that day was Gentlemen in New York who started a pro league in 2016 obviously it went one season It also led to major league rugby. So there were people involved that had never been involved before that went to that game because of

17:54You know everyone had heard of the all blacks brand the book legacy is shared amongst corporations all over the United States So the all blacks name and brand in the US carries weight so they Invested in going into this event because of that brand and saw something that they all fell in love with and like Why is this not more popular here? Not more successful. So that question starting to get asked more and more by the right people And I think man, that's going to be an event we look back on as the turning point to sure Yeah, look we know it's a potential big money spin if are both of the two rugby unions the two teams involved But just in terms of the profile of the game you've got that as Rick said you've got the rugby world cup to there In five years time and I understand that world rugby has really encouraged these sorts of games because they are desperate for this World Cup tournament to be a success Yeah, I I think you look at the soccer world cup that just rolled through the US There's a lot of doubts leading into that like how is this going to be received and it was I believe

18:58One of the most financially successful world cups in in soccer's history um, and I'm sure world rugby looked at that and Maybe some concerns were alleviated that there is Definitely the market here to support a support. I sport that wasn't You know born and grow on in the US Um, and I think it also opened up some eyes to Overseas travelers who may have been like I don't really want to go to the US to watch this world cup That may be changing their mind saying what I'm seeing on TV what I'm hearing the news probably isn't as accurate as what people are making out to be and I mean, I live over here in Kansas and TJ and I love it like I truly believe this is one of the greatest countries on the earth And until you get here and experience it outside of like the big city and the politics You don't have a true appreciation for how great this place is yeah, yeah I mean look realistically we know how the big four sports really dominate the landscape I mean what do you think is the potential

19:59Ceiling For for rugby. I mean we they're never gonna but rugby's never gonna break up that monopoly Let you know the baseball and the football and the hockey and the basketball, but how big can it get? I think it can get past soccer eventually just just because there is such an appetite here For contact sports American the American sports fan you look at how quickly the UFC rose It was Very impressive and like obviously we're cleaning up the game a lot. We're not we're not cage fighting on the field but There is an appetite for like that high collision impact sport Just again, just a small example Never taken an American friend who have never been exposed to rugby to a game and they've gone away from it going Well, that that was terrible. That was not fun at all. They all go that was amazing How can I watch more of that? So The drug is there. It's loaded up in the syringe. We've just got to find the right vein and pump it in

21:03Okay, yeah Well, we have had to speak it said they're gonna rug me. No, but dad We should See what you're doing there. Yeah, yeah, you know what I didn't say that that was Low-glows Dan low-glows now. I was gonna ask you though about you know Obviously rugby rugby league to an American audience it may just be all one thing And we've seen the NRL trying to expand in DeVagus They've been up there three years now and had a big to-do in Vegas and it's been on ESPN What sort of impact does rugby league had and how much is that confused the pallet up there? It's interesting show Russell Crowe was on Joe Rogan not too long ago and I think everyone's pretty aware of the Impact that that podcast has and he was talking a lot of rugby league and how simple it is and probably a little bit easier to To follow the American football fan with the you can see the defense you can see the offense, you know six downs versus four downs

22:05um I don't hear a ton and that may just be the the bubble that I live in guys that on the NRL like I'll watch it I'm all in on the wires up the wires for the finals first Edda boy, I want him to win the Premiership for the first time in history because what a great story that's gonna be But um, I don't think it's muddy the water too much if they think And I it seems crazy because there is such a history between the codes But if there is a market they could coexist and work together if we'd probably give the US Yeah, we'll see yeah, okay Well look I've just before we let you go and it's been great getting your perspective on it Dan but What have you made of the series tell us what your thoughts are Just because you're talking about people loving contact sports world has been plenty of that has been absolutely intense and and brutal But what have you made of it? What have you liked about it and what are you expecting this weekend? Yeah, it's it's by far in a way the hardest road trip in rugby I feel like he's going to South African winning so to be all squared up those two tests and then to

23:10To go down and I'm just gonna I'm an honory kiwi my best mates here James Patterson played for the Highlanders So patto patto if you I don't know if he listens but he probably Be sure if he does and he should you guys are that good, but He adopted me into the kiwi family. So thank you for that but Um the last test was a bit was a bit of a heartbreaker, but it's definitely the hardest place to go and win is South Africa Um, I think New Zealand. I think New Zealand squared up in Baltimore to to South Africa's trying to make this a pro South African crowd They put up the footage of the airport before the fans and unlike this and paying paying a bunch of people in Baltimore 20 bucks to come chief South Africa's not gonna be enough come game day They're going down so the all blacks are winning Put put your put your house on nine plus all blacks by plus nine Put the farm on it. It's a lock. You just become my favorite Australian ever Hey, I actually wanted you know that um, I remember the first time I went there and one of the network news bulletins

24:14The night after the test actually they didn't play any of the game But they played the old blacks doing the Hucka and they just said have a look at this This is before the New Zealand USA game at soldier field and have a look at how the all blacks of New Zealand line up before a game They played the Hucka, but that those planes flying over the stadium in Cape Town I think that made the headline news over there for a bit It's it did uh if you guys can say the inappropriate thing. I'll drop this one in here too If the US doesn't do with planes that are flying low if you know what I mean It's pretty there It's sensitive so Yeah, there's a lot of shock people. I think funny enough had a bunch of people text me who aren't in the rugby world Over here and they're like does that happen at every game? I'm like it twice and both in South Africa, but yeah No, yeah, we only try to Although yeah, they do yeah, we tried it once at Eden Park was a single engine sessner and that got pretty low But there was a slightly different circumstance here All right, mate. 26:19The all blacks are here as well As they prep for that test in Baltimore and um It's been really nice to visit a city I've never been to before and I think the all blacks are kind of feeling that way too You know something fresh something new After the grind is South Africa and um, yeah, it's been been really good, but looking forward to the weekend as well So I hope you're getting a chance to have as a fantastic city tell us about um What you're doing there and and like what the weather's like at the moment because it's been pretty hot in the States Yeah, absolutely it has uh the weather's been fantastic like expecting it to get up to 30 degrees tomorrow And today here in Washington DC it's 28 and uh, they're saying that the weather temperatures are going to continue There might be the odd little bit of rain around in the in the next week But it doesn't drop the temperatures as all um, I've been out and about in Washington DC as you do having a look at What is obviously a very famous city for all its monuments? You know seeing the White House uh Being been up to Capitol Hill Equally seen that the Lincoln Memorial and uh, yeah, it's just a

27:23Really cool city to go and see things you you kind of to a degree see on TV. Don't you or other movies? And to be here in the flesh and set with my own eyes has been brilliant really really enjoyed it Oh, that that's great. Look at the teams flew over together Um, just tell us about the state of the team. Obviously the all blacks has been some injuries They've lost two on the bounce and I know we saw last year after the loss at Twickenham They actually got a bit deflated after that. I felt so what's it like this time? What sort of state are they in ahead of this fourth match? Oh, I look like I certainly feel that they're beating up a bit You know, that it's been an arduous tour yet. They've had to Unlike the spring box. I've had to do the provincial games as well, which everybody Basically had a hand and really apart from I think cam Roy guard and will Jordan Uh, so the squad has obviously been through a lot uh, and physically they've been challenged like this is a very Well-draught efficient South African to team you know back-to-back World Cup champions number one team in the world before we got there and

28:24They're not only they're not in that place because they they don't know Where their strengths lie and at the weekend we saw them flex their muscles in that regard in the second half They went a lot more direct went to their scrum went to their line out more And you know their defense really lifted a notch and that took its toll on the all blacks who put everything Into that test match. So look I know doubt the fact that they are trying to freshen up this week I remember when we went through this in 1996-46 matches on the bounce You know that final week leading um into the Alice Park test And even to a degree the loft is test that year We'd come off a lot of rugby as well. We really didn't train a great deal And I think that's the mindset here that they have to Also to a degree. I know I've answered this in a long-winded way, but this is a fact they They're going to need to look at how they freshen up in terms of maybe Personnel that are probably hungry Uh, that'll be keen to get out there and test themselves against the spring box and And secure at least to draw in this series. So I expect because of that

29:26And the fatigue in this team um that there might be some changes to do that and and make them look You know slightly slightly more energetic Marshy it's interesting you say that you man you mentioned, you know The spring box flexing their muscles because in a way It was a flex of russia russmasters only to make two injury and force changes and to go with the strongest team Because I think a lot of people thought um there might be changes for this fourth test given that the sad Everyone's feel like they've wrapped the series up in South Africa How much pressure do you think that's put on Dave Rennie and How much influence do you think it'll have on what Rennie does with his all black squad I quite a lot ricardo, but but if I'm russia russmas, why would I give Um Dave Rennie and the all blacks of bone? You know like at the moment Though they are leading this series and Why would they give them any sniff of an opportunity by Making dramatic changes changing combinations that are working really well for them Look the whole chat throughout this test series has been about the fact That

30:26This is this is the greatest rival. This is the best two teams in the world Going at each other with everything they've got and No one wants to take it back with step and nobody said that much either and nobody's used excuses Yeah, look there's been some crap Floating around about the scrums that always happens when Your scrumming against spring box, but apart from that Then the camaraderie the respect off the field has been there big time But again, you know, it's all about making statements on the rugby field and I wasn't surprised to see russie Not really make any changes, you know He's got his foot on the throat at the moment. You'll want to keep it there that that team That's your DNA. That's the way they operate. So yeah, no let no let off for the all blacks, but hey That's why you put the boots on it's like right, oh you're not buttoning off or neither of we let's go We can actually come out of this series with a with a drawer and you know better than us And I go right I that's the challenge I want as a player and as an all black and as an all black coach Yeah, look forward power They'd very much been the key to the spring box game both their set piece and also the way they just keep coming and wave after wave

31:31In your view to the all blacks have to find a way to to stand up to that to stop that or can you devise ways To pay around it was it just one of those things There's no no escaping it you have got to meet them on the line It's one of those things that are inevitable really tj. I think You know at the end of the day I think if we buy our own admission didn't look at it over the three test matches so far and say that they have a Superior scrum we'd be getting ourselves So what we've got to do is find a way around Them not having the ability to have as many scrums as they would like and insert their dominance on us And equally you know try and keep them out of the zones where they're really dangerous We all know that's inside the 22 You know, they're the best team in the world At accumulating points in that zone. I think on average Well, certainly before this test series every entry into the 22 And in recent years, you know, they're accumulating 5.2 points, which is an incredible statistic You know every time you go into the 22 you're coming away with 5.2 points like that that's pretty damn good

32:32So we really know that a we've got to try and restrict their set piece try and Negate the amount of scrums in a test in the first test at Alice Park the first scrum wasn't till the 16th minute Adventations to the all blacks. We didn't we didn't use up any energy Um in the scrum, you know, so the way that the game played out there wasn't a huge amount of scrums And that hasn't happened over the last two tests. So All those areas, you know cut down at error rate, which means they're not kicking for touch or penalty So they're not kicking for touch and dominating lineouts So we know where we can get them 13 tries and 3 test matches we can get outside of this blitz defense now We've just got to stay away from where they want to take us They want to take us into the hurtlocker set piece physical wise We just want to avoid that at all costs and when we do we look like we can be hurt them big time Um, Dave Rene won't name his team for another couple of days We've already mentioned the fact that their injuries are hardies out and looks like he's gone for the year Which is a shame Luke Jacobson's not there So A they've got to probably they've got to find a new captain

34:38I thought did fantastic in the last test, but they know What he's going to offer Maybe tub a tub a nylon way comes into the mix off the bench now. 35:43You know does he Team up with tubivier, you know, that's that's the big question and then secondly If that does happen You know that meant that means that the loose forwards have significant changes with jakeinson and severe out or does he You know opts to put Vati on the side of the scrum and then you've got that line out hot that they've got a lot of options. I Personally, I would like to see to prove Vati on the side of the scrum Which enables us to go with that double impact loose forward mix and we don't have to carry a lock And again, that's not criticism. It's just like I think in the last quarter If we're in the test match, we're fitter than them and I think adding tempo into the game That's the right time to do it rather than adding um firepower and Physicality let's keep the tempo of the game going So it took me enough to play two luces on the bench to me would mean put two po on the side and pay maybe go for that one two punch um

41:58No, and that we're in a bit of spot then when we arrived I mean we we sort of always thought that would make changes in the fourth test regardless of whether we won that third one or not Uh, for the probably the reasons you've stated um, you know Make sure we're in guys with plenty of energy and and share the load. 48:26Leal lost two, three two at Hunter Rail, better. So after a red card to Killian and Bupa as brother Ethan, they had led to one in that game. And Bernice Udortman, Bint V-R-A-L by three goals to two. Some big games coming up tomorrow, including Liverpool hosting Athletico Madrid. And we got the NFL season starting on Thursday and a bit of news about the Monday night football where Kansas City Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos coaches. Coach Andy Reed has said that Patrick Mahomes has made it his mission to be in uniform for week one. He had surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee in December. He has not played at all in preseason, but has been in full training since July. He said there's a pretty good chance Patrick will go ahead and start, unless something were to come up in the next couple of days. Most likely he'll be the guy out there, other than having a brace on his leg, everything looks normal. He's running around the same as his always done. I think he'll be fine. OK, well here, what a player, if anyone can, he can.

49:29Just incredible, incredible athlete. Because the US Open, now Aaron Routliffe with her Indonesian partner, Sujati, they won yesterday and they actually would do to start about 9.30, but obviously things have been backed up a bit there. So we're now looking at a star time for their doubles quarter final at 10.20, but earlier on today, Arena Sabelenko, who's the top seed in the women's draw, she had a bit of a tough one against Noscova, and got a little bit lucky then to scova, just got really ragged when she couldn't afford to be, and Sabelenko ended up winning the third set in a tie break. Yeah, so I think there were a couple of tie breaks in that game, so it went to three sets. I can tell you that if Aaron Routliffe does get through to the semi-finals, she'll be playing her old doubles partner in Gabi Debrowski, because Debrowski and Stefani have won the 6364 over Zhang and Zhang of China, the seventh seed, so that is on the horizon.

50:30And we spoke yesterday about the US influence and the men's singles draw. Well, there was a battle between Francis TFO and Anthony Michelson. Michelson took the first two sets, let me split that out, 7563. TFOs come back to when the next two, 7563 as well, so completely mirrored. They've gone to a fifth set, and it is currently on serve, although TFO is love-30 down on his first serve of the fifth set. Okay, and I suppose the one other match that we've got to talk about, it's due up just after midday, and this should be an absolutely fantastic contest. Carlos Alcaraz is back informed, so that the Alcaraz Shelton match, second seed against the eighth seed, at Arthur A. Stadium quarter finalist, due away just after midday. So that's what's happening at the US Open. We'll keep tabs on how Aaron Routliffe is doing, as the morning wears on, we think, due to start, we're at 10-15 minutes from now. We'll get the clubs out of the bag. It's time for a deep dive into golf, and just a sec with Dave Belisky. 10 minutes after 10 now, Sport Nation mornings. Yeah, 10, 15 Sport Nation mornings. And as always, that is time for a deep dive into the world. A goal for Dave Belisky. Hey Dave. Hey T.J. How you doing? Yeah, good mate. What a finish to that European Masters over the weekend in Switzerland. We talked about it last week. It's a high altitude tournament. And Thristen Lawrence coming from what, six shots back? To beat Paul Casey in a playoff? I mean, where do we even start with that? Yeah, well look, I did say to listen as last week, even a few not that interesting, the deep real turds.

53:35We were turning on the TV just to see the Skull Course. And not only did you get to see one of the most picturesque Skull courses on Planet Earth, but boy, did we get one hell of a finish here? I mean, this was an amazing experience. I think it was a great experience. I think it was a great experience. I don't know if you can see it, but boy, did we get one hell of a finish here? I mean, this was an incredible golf tournament. One of the best finishes that we've seen on the DP World Tour this entire year. And I do want to just run through what a roller coaster this was T.J. because Thristen Lawrence defending champion at this golf course by just midday Friday. So halfway through the second round, he was already the $2.50 betting favorite. And he was given a 37.9% chance of winning the tournament. He had an absolute nightmare on Saturday. He had fallen to just 0.6% chance of winning his odds ballooned out to 90 to 1. On Saturday night, Paul Casey starred Sunday, three shots clear of the field, and six shots ahead of Thristen Lawrence.

54:36And Lawrence somehow, after that nightmare, Saturday managed to rebound. He came out on Sunday, shot a bogey free 62-8 under par, set the clubhouse lead at 18 under Paul Casey. He had a really up and down round here. He had a double bogey of the six. Somehow managed four booties and five holes, put himself back in front at 19 under with just three holes to play. Standing on that last tee, Paul Casey was a 90% favorite to win the tournament. He needed just a part of seal it. Lawrence was just a 10% chance to win. And then Paul Casey, winner made bogey. Somehow clear the creek couldn't get up and down. We went to a playoff, four holes into their playoff Thristen Lawrence. Sunk a 23-foot birdie part on the fourth player foal for one of the pickets come back. So it was a real rollercoaster, GJ, and just an enthralling tournament start finish. And a bit of history on the line. Yeah, well Thristen Lawrence has now just become the second golfer since the great Spaniard CvB to win the European Masters three times.

55:36So he won this tournament back in 2022. Again, last year and here now as defending champion. So he's made it three victories in five appearance at CranSus. He certainly king of the mountains. And four Casey had he won. It would have been his 16th deep you will to a victory and his first worldwide win since the 2021 Dubai Desert Classic. Another piece of history that Paul Casey was fighting for there was it was this would have been his first deep you will to win. It was all the way back in 2001. So the victory had he achieved it would have been a new record for the longest gap between a player's first and most recent DPT Tour win with 25 years in between. In the end it was Thristen Lawrence who came on top and joined CvB as the only three time winners at CranSus in 1972 and six deep you will to a victories now for the South African. Mate, David Hitchett had a cup of tea. The book he beat it last week remind me. David's bright top 20 and he finished 20 third Mr. by a single stroke.

56:38A little unfortunate and yeah look some regrets there was was was much closer to lead in again just couldn't finish it off over the weekend but a very very close call just one shot. Yeah, catching that book you better. Thanks. Yeah, look you spoke about Thristen Lawrence last week and if I remember rightly you were linking this course quite an unusual link really because you were linking the course in Switzerland to a course that they have the Kenya open at because of the altitude and uncovered a quite an extraordinary trend with with Lawrence and golf at altitude. Yeah, well look now all six of Thristen Lawrence's deep you will to victories have come playing at our streets obviously now this is this is third European Masters title CranSus here but he's also won the Joe Big Open at Rampart the South African open at Bollero to which is near Pretoria just on the outskirts of between Johannesburg and Pretoria. He's won the BMW International Open at Iconread which is again at about 1500 2000 feet of altitude and then mentioned Thristen Lawrence last week on the show and used him as one of the examples linking CranS in the magical Kenya open because he was run rough there at Matiga and he is also been run rough the Johnson work

57:53open at Glendale just to add to that record so CranSus particular is becoming his golf course now three wins and five stars is a true record but there is a tournament on the PGA tour that's co-sanction with the DPL tour called Barikur to championship as played in Tahoe at altitude the only issue is that it does clash with the open championship and it would be very hard to give up the start in the major but you do have to think given Thristen Lawrence's record at altitude. He could go and play the Barikur to championship I'd say he would have every chance winning and he could earn a PGA tour right away with a win there so it must be a very tempting proposition for him. Yeah yeah and look Casey obviously came agonizingly close to winning but again a much bigger story attached to his week as well. Yeah and Tadev is pretty moving this was one of those situations where the result itself almost became secondary for Casey because he now lives in Switzerland obviously went to joined Livgolf which is why we haven't seen him on our screens as often and during after his third round he spoke quite emotionally about what happened here in CranS Montana earlier this year they had that dreadful fire at the consolation bar a new year stay killed 41 people injured more than 100 others and that included a young up and coming Amish a golfer.

59:1017 year old Emmanuel Gallipini who was on the Italian national team is a junior golfer based actually into buy and a member of the Italian national golf set up so after taking that three shot lead on Saturday Casey announced actually that what he really earned from this tournament would be donated to supporting people affected by that tragedy so by finishing run around around 412,000 US dollars is pledged that entire amount to the the cause basically for victims of that tragedy. He was a very powerful fire so really really quite a moving moment you could see the motion painted on his face when he spoke about it and considering he been out there on Sunday with all of that hanging over him he lost his lead there's three shots behind a one point in that front around for this way back and just one part away from winning on that final high for the handle the entire week and crew well and really classy just to prove one of the better stories we've had to professional golfers. Well things a bit quiet in the States at the moment obviously we are looking forward to the president's cup but really that the spotlight is on the DP world to at the moment and the Irish open is up this weekend and it completely understand new venue for the tournament this year.

1:00:24Yeah looking and one I've been really look forward to Irish open it heads to Trump international golf links at Dunberg and County clear for the first time now listeners don't don't get to confused by the Trump Trump international golf links we did have a tournament there at Aberdeen a couple weeks ago the next so championship this is a different different trumpet national golf ginks this is one in Ireland so it now becomes the 19th different venue to host this tournament during the deep people to the area calls sits right on the Atlanta coast is about half an hour down the road from the Hinch that's where they just played that walker cup where we heard some of the snippets coming into the segment earlier this morning. Originally this course was designed by Greg Norman open in 2002 then Trump or the property in 2014 and Martin Haltry did a significant redesign in 2016 and that's worth noting because he also redesigned that golf course in Aberdeen where they hosted that next so championship at the other Trump international golf links.

1:01:25Some have claimed the course was better before the restorations other said the redevelopments massive improved the property but either way you cut it for me this is an outstanding golf course really picture risk outstanding views at proper Irish links course hosting this week's tournament sounds fabulous and of course the other great thing is when it's a Donald Trump course when certain people play it has magical qualities like balls just sort of spring out of the rough and land back on the fairway again. You can make four whole ones per round I mean it's magical yeah and I think you're allowed a couple of Mulligan's a long way but only if you're certain people or a certain person yeah I'm looking but I'm seriously and I don't know whether this is going to lead us into a discussion about what type of grass it is but what sort of golf courses do you work and what should we expect this week. Yeah look it's a proper west coast Irish links course and turn it set up to be only 6,800 to 3.8 yards for a past 70 so that's extremely short by bottom professional standards there's five par three's 10 par four's and just three par five so it's a really unusual configuration that we see this week.

1:02:31It usually actually plays as a mix of five par three's and five par five's but for the professionals they've turned two of those par five's into par four's so the regular par five first and the 13th they're now playing as long par four's between 490 to 500 yards this week but for me that yardage almost becomes a relevant if this Atlantic wind gets up which it does look like it is set to do. The routing essentially runs 9 house out 9 house back as quite traditional in links courses and the frontline gym we plays into that prevailing wind with the back nine predominantly into it so the huge joins expose coastline we've got 16 of the 18 holes with beautiful views across the Atlantic and these massive June complexes which really they do and be able to if you look at them so the wind forecasting for me is vital when we get to links golf and it does look like it's extremely windy this week. So I think it was going to put a guess on it based on the current forecasting I think that you better to be out there first thing on Thursday morning Thursday afternoon the winds do look like they're going to get higher t times for the deep people to were just released this morning and I think that if you are looking towards those morning t times they may just get a bit of an advantage but I think for me the resident club professional here at the Tromba National Golfing subbed it up pretty nice easy look this won't be a putting contest it's going to be all about controlling maneuvering and shaping your golf form for me.

1:03:54That's really what links golf is all about and then of course you've always got to have a really good short game and you get to these links golf courses. Of course Rory McElroy won the title last year and a playoff at the K club imagine he'll be back wanting to defend that in fact word is it's a very strong lineup for the Irish Open this weekend. Definitely is I mean look that that factory for Rory last year was absolutely remarkable because not only did he win in that playoff course but even just to make the playoff here to make an eagle at the last hole just to force a playoff against it very unlucky working lagergreen. 1:06:09You mentioned the Hoi Guards there and text from Mark who's saying he's been backing Nikolai Hoi Guards for a win for two years now do you think he should stop. Look he is incredible golfer he's very talented I would say going into this week given the school cards that I don't think that the biggest asset didn't look like all card has he is tons of power off that he is an incredibly long driver to golf ball and I can't say that he's a good guy. Don't know he's going to get that much in advantage here this week given the school card link he does however I have a very good record at link courses he's had a six and a fourth at the Scotch open previously so he does have a good record so I don't know maybe maybe go one more week and then you'll leave it be if he doesn't come right. Last week you drew that comparison between Switzerland and Kenya I'm not sure what are you going to come up with this week Ireland and Uganda something like that what sort of what give us a what sort of courses provide you with that sort of scientific guidance as you make your picks for this week.

1:07:16Yeah look a little bit more mainstream this time T.J. first and foremost I just want golfers who are really comfortable playing genuine exposed to links golf courses this isn't somewhere where I'm particularly interested in driving distance as I mentioned there with where guard power is not going to be that important for me given the short length of this golf course for me it is all about your ability to flight the golf ball control your trajectory and adjust to the changing win directions that we see you coming off the Atlantic for me that is far more important. So with five par three's here and there's going to be a lot of approach shots where you're going to have to be creative rather than simply hitting sort of a stock member or an I play for me is going to be very important as a result of that and around the green is always very important when you get to these links courses in the win because inevitably you are going to miss greens you've got those shave runoff areas and underlations that come with these golf courses where that it really you do have to give your creative sometimes using puddle or little bump and runs to get up and down.

1:08:16So for me there's going to be lots of different option when that does happen and you miss those greens so my big note would be just for listeners to be cautious with the Irish open form itself because many of these golf courses have been played on parkland courses rather than more traditional links courses as this is going to be so I'll be looking closely at previous four places like well Russia reminds me a lot of back course where is that the open championship back in 2025. Le Hinch just down the road where the walk up cup was just how rural rural county down badly live in ports Stewart and other exposed links venues the open championship Scottish open the offer done or links championship but for me as I mean I do think that the best match may just be that Trump and their national at Aberdeen which hosted that recent next so championship given that all three redesign both Aberdeen and Duneberg there going to be some obvious architectural similarities even though Aberdeen is a bit more long ground and more brutal golf course. Then we'll see this week. Yeah, look I'm going to go a bit off piece here with all my selections teacher I was as I mentioned very tempted by John Rammert the top of the market because this would be his third Irish open win the other two where he has one have been on Irish open links courses and he's in fairly decent form in the moment. So for me, John Rammert the top of the market if you are looking for one of the favorites but given the wind in the forecast its links courses there can be a lot volatility. I'd rather chance my arm a little bit here and look for some value further down the board and floats and pick numbers out there for our listeners. So at the the first one I'll give out is Waking Lagergrin 66 to one in the market or the TAB having at top 20 at $3.75 as I mentioned he was very unlucky to lose in that playoff to Rory McAwery last year.

1:10:44Now he arrives after a ninth at the British Masters and 11th last week at the mega European Masters but he has a very good record on links courses at the Oxford Dunhall links championship he's finished second third and fourth on two occasions as well. So also played very well in Doha at a golf course that is very linked to the open championship extremely windy exposed golf course so Waking Lagergrin for me also gets one of those morning tea times which I do think is going to get the better side of that door. The other name I'll give out Sam Bierstow 150 to one in the one market TJ or a top 20 just for finishing in the top to a Sam Bierstow will pay you $6. He missed his cut last out of the European Masters but I don't think that is as suitable a golf course for him before that he was 19th in Denmark 10th at that very important next so championship that I mentioned and 21st at the British Masters after that again he's played well in Doha before in Windig golf courses he gets one of those morning tea times and if you strike a line through last week especially looking at that other trunk course in Aberdeen he played very well there when he was 10th.

1:11:55But for me the book bookie better this week is Antoine Rosner the Frenchman in the wind market you can get Rosner at 66 to one the bookie better itself I love this number TJ it was $3.60 for a top 20T I bear going to boost that all the way out to $4.50 for you. Not necessarily the order five four three two one but at number five I've got Brian McKekney now looking he's not going to go down as one of the great survive the cricket or rugby everyone else on this list is one world titles or set records or one international claim this was Brian McKekney is there simply because he was front and center of two of the most famously

1:15:03controversial moments that we can remember he kept his nerve to kick the winning penalty against Wales at that key moment really in the all blacks winning their first ever grand slam in 1978 it came after that line out and then three years later in an equally boiling atmosphere faced up to the notorious underarm delivery at the mcg and I think every single New Zealander watching pretty much sort of through the batter way and discussed with him and I think that was a great deal. He's not necessarily one of the absolute greats but one of the most famous because of the moments he found himself in. Hamish Bond will forever be known as one half of arguably the greatest rowing pair in history with Eric Murray together they won two Olympic golds in multiple world titles in between he took up road cycling and won a calm games bronze in the road time trial on the GC in 2018. Three years later he was back on the water this time in the eight at the Olympics and won another Olympic gold his third before again putting his incredible pedaling power to great effect as a cyclor as team New Zealand successfully defended the Americas Cup three Olympic and eight world championship golds in rowing a calm games bronze and cycling and an Americas Cup pretty good all that.

1:16:29Jeff Wilson after an outstanding list of achievements at school level rugby cricket basketball track and field gold he played cricket and rugby for New Zealand in fact he done that before he was 21. He didn't play a test and I know a lot of people think that to be a true double international you had to play test rugby and test cricket like for example Wellington's Eric Tindall who incidentally not only played test cricket and rugby for New Zealand he also refereed or umpired both sports at test level. But Jeff Wilson he's one of our great rugby winners wingers I should say and as a one day cricket out smack the winning innings to beat Australia when he was 19 that'll do me. Sonny Bill Williams now I did think about whether to include people have been it excelled at rugby and league because there are some similarities between the sports and a lot of people have crossed over and played international level in both. Brad Thorn for example you could go through quite a list of names Matthew Ridge and the like but then you look at Sonny Bill's list of achievements and how can you not include him really he was the youngest Canterbury banks down player to win an NRL Grand Final in 2004 and the same year became the youngest Kiwi and when he came back to league in 2013 sorry yeah he won that Grand Final in 2004 and then when he came back to league in 2013 one another title with the roosters.

1:17:52A year in which he was named international player of the year whilst he didn't play a huge part in the all black's 2011 World Cup when he was a key figure in the final at Twickenham four years later and of course along the way he won a super rugby title with the Chiefs. You can debate his boxing credentials but hey he had a nine and two record as a pro and it did at one stage hold a WBA title not to be sniffed at so yep Sonny Bill Williams for me in at number two. One. Okay top of my list and as I say I haven't necessarily put them in order I found that too hard but I've got Rita Fattieloffer here and again it's just a personal choice but Rita is number one because she was a World Champion in two sports as a netball player she was a brilliant wing attack she could also play in the shooting circle. One two world crowns with the silver ferns at the World Champs in 1987 and then at the World Games two years later they had Australia's measure at that time and she was one of the reasons why then in 1982 Rita was a star performer as New Zealand claim the women's world softball title in Taiwan she was named as designated hitter in the World Tournament team so not just a double international but a double world champion.

1:19:11So that's my list there are plenty of honorable mentions that you got again there as well the name Madonna Harris do you remember that she represented New Zealand at both winter and summer Olympics in the same year if you don't mind one of con games cycling gold Melissa Rusco captain New Zealand at football and rugby Sophie divine Susie Bates from the white fence they were both double international Lewis a wall netball and rugby for New Zealand and he Leslie played softball for New Zealand and rugby. Have you all blacks view scrums differently as well. This is what I had to say about those things. I guess we could talk about scrums but I mean clearly you know our view and the view of the world rugby and the officials is different and so you just got to deal with it you know they've been a set away we do and and other ones that matter on game day so we'll have to be better I think on our ball. The scrums reasonably solid we got a got a badly wrong on one and got got punished with one of their feeds and so I look at a weapon for them and that's the challenge we want high continuity if you make an error they get to go to a set piece and they get a penalty off that they batch up the field and say look we're still in the area we're going to be better and.

1:21:23Yeah line out wise we're just trying to play tempo and ideally we'd like to play it off the middle of the back but the thinking is we'll take it where we can and and the way set out for good defending middle and back and just not necessarily mirror the fence but just going off our throw it's free ball at the front so we prepared to take it just to get ball on our hands and get a bit of continuity I just the I just don't want to be the big topic you know we've got to be better we've got to be more accurate to limit the man of scrums they have. You know we've we've said a few things we've spoken a word rugby about it they agree but in some parts but but not necessarily everything and to be honest the the sole focus at the moment seems to be the break for our again a for a MORF is looking for break for that and see all the other things that you're supposed to be looking at so I don't think we're helping our referees by making a job any easier so it's a different topic but I don't I don't really want to talk about scrum because they are an end what they want to be doing together in the environment with me as well. the deciding factor in the game, you know, sad afga very good at creating opportunities

1:22:27and taking their chances and so that more, which they scored it under the post, that was a big moment in the game and so we know if we can do a couple of things a bit better limit their opportunities and be a little more clinical, the result could go another way. So it's in our hands and they're very good side and nice frown will really well and so yeah I think I think the better side probably won on end. 1:23:32I mean Bo Jackson, he was a de Kathelon state champion twice, he holds records in the 100 yard dash, the long jump, the triple jump, the high jump and the 120 high hurdles as well as been a professional NFL player and a professional baseball player. Yeah, I don't think I would have selected the five top all rounders in the world all from New Zealand but yeah, thank you Bo Jackson. I remember that and of course, yeah, Bono's baseball, they're that famous Nike ad wasn't there. Subtext, yeah, agreeing with Brian McKecney, one of Soutland's finest involved in two infamous New Zealand sporting moments. One here of Goldie was around today, TJ with the money in cricket. He may have chosen that over rugby because cricket picked him first and I remember I think it was Ross Dykes, the New Zealand selector at the time. There was a sense that they picked Jeff Wilson to play cricket for New Zealand and the hope that they might get him long term and I think he used the expression, we want him to see what cricket can offer him but of course, before too long he was playing for

1:24:32the all blacks, talking of all blacks, there's a couple there that people have mentioned. Yeah, well Gary Knight is one, rugby in wrestling and Steve McDowell and other judo as well in rugby. Yeah, Gary Knight, Yeek, one of Bron's medal at the comm games in Christchurch way back in 1974. Hamish Bond, another bet for him and his, someone's put here, Sonny Bill, yeah, he went all right across a few codes, didn't he? That's for sure. It's an interesting one, I was going to say there's lots of different ones, it's very hard to quantify them but I agree with what you say about Bo Jackson, he was extraordinary. Yeah, he was superb, I was thinking about some of those cross-code athletes and other ones, I just listening, there's a new podcast that started that I listened to which is about Italian football and it's about some of the lesser known stories and one of those was about, you remember Paolo Maldini?
