From the Field: What We Learned from the Texas Longhorns' 59-7 Victory

1:02Texas gets to win 59 to seven over Texas state and it's time to get a look from the field in this edition of on Texas football brought to you by Price, Rick's, I'm Jeff Howe. Guys, 59 to seven, yell at tennis team, start Keyes and press conference after the game. Got the players post game. What was the vibe in the Texas locker room after this? Well, obviously, pretty excited. You won a game 59 to seven to start the season, Hank. One, I think this team was really excited to go play someone that wasn't themselves. They've been doing that for the last month and August all the way going back to basically spring football. Now, you get to see someone in a different color jersey. I guess take out a little frustration because boy, they look to go doing so today. I thought Sart was complimentary of his offense. He said, look, we were efficient on third and fourth downs. We took care of the football for the most part, but they're still playing a room for us to move forward. He decided, you know, we had a couple of zero, one or two yard runs that probably could have

2:06been four, five or six. So that's a level of consistency that they'd like to see more of. And of course, the turnover in the red area from Archmaning said, look, we got to watch the tape. We got to be better on that. But when you score an eight of nine drives, Jeff, that's a great start offensive. Yeah, I almost look at the interception and, you know, you never want to turn the ball over, but is that almost a blessing in disguise going into practice this week to look at again, you dominated so much to have an area where you can say, hey, we need to fix this. What do we do here? Archmaning chalked it up to a double clutch on a, on a m mosedly route. We set, took the blame for it. But yeah, there were, there was in terms of atmosphere and the mood from the player or from Sark and the players after the game. They're relaxed. I think, I thought it was all Archmaning feel really comfortable sitting with Raheem Biles taking questions. So, you know, very relaxed mood. They're excited about this win, but they're not discounting the fact that there are things they need to correct and get better for Ohio State. Yeah, guys, it looked like Texas State spent most of this game in a single high look. At some point, they just decided to devote more resources to stop in the run.

3:10And that's kind of an arc started to air it out a little bit. But CJ, you mentioned it in some of your commentary. I mentioned it on the site in Snap Judgments. Just like the running game bogged down after that second quarter drive where they were really getting to push, what do you guys make of the run game? I know you said Sark said, hey, some of those runs will clean up. What do you guys make of the run game after one game with this reworked offensive line in this overhauled running background? Well, like the first run of the game and goes for 45, right? That would have been your second hug as run from a running back in all of 2025. But to me, it was exciting to see. And I think it gives a little bit of a look into how explosive the offense, especially that running game could be to see that was really encouraging. But they basically hit a wall after that for the next 20 carries. They only averaged 2.09 yards per carry. I mean, it wasn't great. And so for what Sark was talking about, making sure that a three yard gain or a four yard gain is significantly better moving in the second down than one or two.

4:11And he said, that's kind of what we need to chalk it up to. He said, look, I thought the offensive line protected really well. But now it's time to go back, rewatch a lot of the assignments in the running game, as well as looking at the running backs. Did they hit the right hole? Did they get up field when they needed to or did they stretch horizontally a little too much? That's something I think holistically gets lost in the run game when we talk about hit in yards, but it's something that they're certainly going to watch going into Ohio state next weekend. Yeah, I think stylistically with the running backs, it was, I don't want to say night and day, but it felt a lot different with the style of backs they have. And it's unfortunate. We didn't get to see more Derek Cooper. He went out with the ankle Steve Sarkieshan said, so they're going to moderate air him going forward. But it's just two different style backs and Hollywood's brothers. I think maybe I didn't give him enough credit as a pass catcher too. I mean, he was making moves with the ball in his hands after the catch. So I think Texas is in good position. I think it's things they can clean up and be better at next week. Yeah, let's talk about Texas defense because this Texas state offense taxes you in a number of different ways with a tempo that splits the receivers. They get the ball out quick.

5:12So there were some explosive plays allowed. There wasn't a ton of pressure on Brad Jackson to the end of the day. Three takeaways. You get a few stops and Red Zone stops for some misfield goes, but you guys take away on the Texas defense game one in the second 10 year at Texas World Must-Know. Only seven points allowed, obviously, the benefit of a few misfilicles in there, I think 24 yards, Hank, as well within my distance. I could have made that one. But point being plenty of room for improvement still, right? Not a lot of pressure on the quarterback, I thought taxis state and Brad Jackson did

8:19a phenomenal job getting that ball out early. Now in tight coverage on the outside, that should lead to more plays on the football. Raking earlier on routes, when you know that ball is going to be out quick, I thought Bomasco has a lot of tape that I think will benefit him in the long run. But again, a lot of explosives for me. And now we talked about the boomer bus with the muskrant defense. We didn't see a lot of boom until really regime piles got in the mix with a couple of turnovers. But pretty leaky at times, a lot of big plays allowed. I think that's something that you talked about positive tape to watch moving forward. They're certainly going to have plenty of that defensive. Yeah, again, like Cedars said, seven points, talking to Colin Simmons after the game. It's tough as a star pass rusher to play in offense where you're not really going to have a lot of time to get to the quarterback. And I thought he still was able to affect the game in a pretty big way early on. Obviously he had the fumble recovery. He had half tackle for loss in there earlier. And he was he was disrupting Brad Jackson as much as he could if not getting him to the

9:22ground. So I thought a really overall positive. I thought the tackling was really good. But like CJ mentioned, some of the secondary play needs some work. I think some guys got caught flat footer a couple times. But again, things they can correct. And you know, Will Mustchamp, I don't know. We checked them the whiteboards in the locker room since a half time. But now I have the points. They should be in good shape. So we'll see how they they crack those going forward into high state. 12:25Give me one thing, the most positive thing that you're taking away from the game today. Yeah, offensively scored on eight of your nine drives and that was after driving the field about 65 yards, 70 yards right before the interception in the end zone. That is phenomenal stuff. Now, I don't expect that every single weekend. I didn't expect that today against a team like Texas State who we looked, they weren't great defensively. They weren't great last year. Obviously, they have plenty to work on this year as well. But we didn't see that at all over the last couple of years for Texas offense. So to see that and then to also hear from Steve Sarkisian, he said, look, today was, I spent the fewest amount of time in my tenure on the defensive headset today. I was all over the offensive side of the headset. I got to talk to Kyle Flood, AJ Milwe, Mike Bomont, Chris Jackson, and get to understand what they see, what they like, what's next for the offense. And as a result, Texas put up 52 points of offense. That to me, Jeff is exactly why Sark made the change for Wolf, Mushroom.

13:26And he said there was a moment in game two where Texas State came out with a wonky formation near the goal one to start the second quarter. And immediately, Mushroom came up to him. So Sarka need timeout. Timeout. Sark walked over. He said, if you need to timeout, I got to call a timeout. Timeout's called. And then right after that, Texas gets a tackle for loss of PBU and then this is field goal. So that to me is is foreign away. My biggest takeaway is Sark's on the offensive headset more and more. I don't know if that will mean Texas is scoring 40 points. Can so how state next week? Probably not. But if that's the rhythm that they'll find sign me up. Hey, what about you? What is the most positive thing you're taking away from the opener? Yeah, I agree largely with what CJ just said that the offensive efficiency three weeks ago, we're talking about a scrimmage Sark's coming back saying, hey, we were inefficient or inefficient at times on offense. You come out and score it, but on all but one of your drives on Saturday. Seems pretty efficient. That and I wrote about it on on Texas football.com just to have it created on defense. Obviously, there were some there were some best of place here and there, but you give up seven points.

14:27I guess a pretty explosive offense that's pretty fast paced. That you got to be pretty excited as a Texas fan and I will say maybe like an underrated. Biggest takeaway. A healthy Trevor Gusby that played for the majority of the game until the starters got a breather. You look back two weeks ago when we're hearing about him injuring his knee, having a going to get an MRI. Think you fast forward to now and tell Texas fans, hey, he's going to play motion of the Texas state game. You guys are going to win 59 to seven. I think everybody would sign up for that. And time to go. I got to go with that as well. All right, CJ, biggest thing CJ Texas needs to clean up before the Ohio State game. I think it's just explosives. I thought too often, especially in that second level, you know, the right by your linebackers, right, basically in the middle of the field. And that's something I think we talked about a little bit with the loss of tie-in. And he Smith is how would that middle of the field look in the passing game? There were guys running wide open, pretty consistent, right? There were run lanes that if one that defensive line getting them, were run lanes or run fits accurate from your linebackers as well.

15:28That's something I still think needs to be worked on because you allow 360 yards and get away with only seven. That's great, but other teams are going to find Ohio State is going to find the end zone more than one time if you give them 360 yards. So that's a big emphasis moving forward. Hank, what about you? What's the biggest thing you think Texas needs to get fixed before the buck guys come to town? Yeah, I would, you know, I think we saw positive from the run game, but I think if they need to shore up a little bit more of the run game, get more continuity on the offensive line. I think it's a big step forward that Guseby did play today. We saw Dylan Sikorsky start at left guard. We saw Lauren see more come in in the second quarter than they went back to Dylan Sikorsky a little bit in the third. So I'm not sure if that's more of just getting these guys reps, getting conditioning, or if they're still trying to find their best five, but I think figuring that out this week ahead of Ohio State, I think they need to get a little bit more out of the tie-in run game, or the run blocking out of the tie-ins. That was a little bit of an issue at times. I just on the soonest struggle there a little bit.

16:29We saw good things out of the passing game from the tie-ins, but I think if they can shore up that a little bit entering Ohio State week, I think that could be a big benefit to this overall run game and their ability to, you know, do what they want to do. All right, that's going to do it from the field. Again, Texas gets it done 59 to 7 over Texas State in the opener. And the big one Ohio State is next next week, right there at DKRC.
