On April 10th, Ellis Denton came into the world right inside a prison, spending her first 13 months on a mother baby unit with her mom. Bernadette Colum. Born while Bernadette served time for robbery and battled heroin and cocaine addictions, Ellis is now a 27-year-old salon owner from, Manchester, thriving as a mom of three. Bernadette got pregnant five months into her three-year sentence and ended up serving about 18 months. She gave birth quickly at the hospital after her water broke in the prison shower and those early days created a tight bond despite the tough circumstances. Growing up wasn't easy for Ellis. Her relationship with her mom stayed rocky due to Bernadette's past traumas and after age two, her aunt and uncle stepped in as main caregivers while Bernadette co-parented, losing her dad at four added more challenges but it all shaped her drive. Inside the prison, life with a newborn mirrored the outside world somewhat early mornings, nursery for Ellis, education for mom, walks, shared meals, with other inmates. That time helped Bernadette turn
things around and now Ellis often acts like the parent treating her mom like a best friend. Ellis credits her unconventional start for fueling her ambition, pushing her to build a better life for her kids. She plans to return to style prison, not behind bars but to inspire staff and inmates that your beginning doesn't define your end people change and every day brings a fresh shot at success.
