From Abuse to Med School: Mary Cain's Journey

0:00On April 28th, Mary Cain burst onto the track scene as a team prodigy, smashing four national high school records and hitting 10th place at the world, championships in the 1500 meters at just 17 years old. She skipped college to join Nike's Oregon project under coach Alberto Salazar, seen as the next big thing in middle distance running. But those four years turned nightmarish, with Cain facing emotional abuse, weight obsession, isolation from her family and pressure that led to, disordered eating, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Team mates and staff allegedly dismissed her struggles, while Salazar denied it all. Nike settled her lawsuit in 2023. Her 2019 New York Times piece blew the lid off, sparking outrage in the running world and helping dismantle the Oregon project. Salazar got hit with a four year doping ban, then a lifetime ban from say sport for misconduct, but Cain calls it just chopping one head off the, Hydra Abuse runs deeper

1:00in the sport, fast forward, Cain stepped away from running in 2016, battled leg numbness later diagnosed as popliteal artery entraments syndrome from, overtraining, surgery in 2023 fixed it, clearing her to ace the MCAT and star med school at Stanford, where she's thriving as a second year student. Now 29, her new memoir lays it all bare, pushing for real change in athletics while she balances classes, PT, light runs and therapy that's, rewired herself few, she's hungry for the future, literally and figuratively, owning her story without regret.
