2:06When enslaved black Americans learn that they were granted freedom, it's a big deal. History is also being made today with the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. It sort of fits and I think it was on purpose that he's opening it today, right? Yeah. He and wife Michelle sat down with Robin Roberts to talk about their legacy. Watch. There's a lot of stuff I'm proud of. For all the resistance from our political opposition, the Affordable Care Act has now helped 50, 60 million people and continues. I'm probably the most proud of is the tone we set, part of our foundation mission here is how do we encourage the next generation of leadership.

3:09Michelle's mom was always good about saying this. You know, things get better. Is that so folks? We kind of fade. Yeah, get out of the way. We got to get out of the way. God, do we miss him? I miss him. Oh my God. That's, he's just, he's still so presidential. I love what he said about the tone. Setting the tone for the country because leadership comes from the top. The tone comes from the top and look at where we are now. It was fished things from the head. Yes. That's another way to put it. That's another way to put it. Yesterday's opening ceremony of the Obama Center was attended by three other presidents, George W. Butch, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden. Trump didn't make the list. He's been out there. I think Michelle made that list. He's been out there. They didn't invite him. He's been out there touting him much better. His presidential sense is going to be somehow Trump libraries and oxymoron. Correct. We'll have one book. Why does he always have to compete with Obama?

4:10He's got it over here for Obama. Because he is. Have you seen how green the reflecting pool is? That is how green with envy Donald Trump is that he will never have the legacy. He will never have the approval rates. He will never have the accomplishments. I mean, I think part of the reason that he's done this Iran deal, which is a disaster is such a bad disaster that even Republicans think is a disaster because he wants to compete with Barack Obama. But I love, I was in Chicago earlier this week. And I can't tell you the excitement in the city. I was with JB Pritzker and I was with Julianne Stratton, who's going to be the next senator from if she gets elected in November. And Pritzker could run for president. But I thought to myself, you know, she's going to be filling basically the seat, the Senate seat that Barack Obama held. He was also a senator from Illinois. And that's part of his legacy that he inspired black leadership. He inspired women and minorities to come out and vote.

5:11And I was, everybody was, Chicago was full of excitement. And let me just tell you the people that are, that were part of the opening ceremony. Mark Anthony, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Bono, The Roots, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Common, Eddie Vetter, and Marcy Martin. You want to know? You want to know why Trump can't stop thinking about him? Because he couldn't get anybody to show up to his celebration. So he's got to turn it into a Trump rally. What is that kid rock? That kid rock? I'm not counting him. Well, when he speaks to the tone, it reminds you, like right now we just celebrated the nicks. And how, as a captain, Jaylen Brunson led that team. When you've played sports, you realize that you've got to have a captain that exudes a certain competence that you're willing to follow. A leadership when stuff looks really bad. That makes you feel better, safer, and capable. I look at President Obama, and he was the... He really set that... Like you trusted that he had your back, whether you agreed with all his policies or not.

6:12You knew, okay, he's in charge, he can lead us, I trust him. I look back now too, and think about how long legacy takes to settle in. People always say you need to wait a couple decades to look back at how people are viewed. I look at George W. Bush, someone who wasn't very popular all the time when he was in office. And yet people are like, whoa, like I kind of miss that. Yeah, yeah. To Trump. And I think if you also look at the way that he has done this presidential center, it is in a historic neighborhood, Jackson Park, which is a neighborhood that need it to be developed, that's a neighborhood that has been underserved for so long. You think about it, it's going to be open daily, free of charge for children and adults. It's for everyone to enjoy, and then the centerpiece is this 225-foot tall tower. And this is what is on it. It says, you are America. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word we. We, the people, we shall overcome. Yes, we can. Oh, what a glorious task we are given to continually try to improve this great nation of ours.

7:15That is the message of the library. We can, yes, we can. We're coming together. He's setting the tones with his very presidential center. And that is why Trump will never be the president that he was. Or quite frankly, the man that he is. Well, I think it's partially being a new mom. I think a lot about how lucky I feel that the first election I voted in was McCain versus Obama. And I voted for John McCain. I didn't support President Obama, but I had no doubt that in that race, it was two of the finest Americans running against each other. A war hero, a decades-long senator, a new up-and-coming senator, who was just this voice of a new generation. I felt the same way. I supported Mitt Romney, but I felt like it was two heavy-weights who represented the best of what America was running against each other. I don't feel that way about our elections anymore. I look at the caliber of people going to Congress, the caliber of people who want to run for president. And it is not oftentimes represented by the finest among us. I also have a lot of them on the Democratic side. I think I do represent some of the finest. Some of them are doing the same. Do you have a partner who's... Well, not him, but those people are Julianna Stratton.

8:18Yeah, well... That's what... If I could just finish this real quick. And I also got to come up working on Capitol Hill during the Obama administration. And we were Republicans. We worked against a lot of his agenda by day. We considered ourselves public servants. And then we would go to happy hour with Obama's staffers at the end of the day. That's the way to do it. Because we believe that we love this country. We had disagreements over policy. But we were all doing what we thought was in the best interest of the country. That's not around anymore. People view each other as enemies. We have leadership at the top that calls the other side the enemy. It's not right. I hope my kids have a season of that. I was a very harsh critic of Obama on TV. I was on CNN. And I was a very harsh critic. I was supported John McCain. And a lot of Latinos were very critical. You were critical. A lot of people were very critical of... A lot of Latinos were very critical of Obama because of his deportation policies. And I will tell you what he did. He brought us in. And we had an immigration roundtable. And he did DACA for the dreamers. And he tried to get immigration reform passed. In fact, part of this presidential center has...

9:20Has a section that is for unfinished business. And I think it takes such humility. So he's got their things like the Sandy Hook time when he tried to pass gun reform and failed. He has immigration there, which he tried to pass and failed. And these are things that I thought, wow, what humility to say. Those are the ones that got away that I'm still living with. Yeah. 12:28So a new CNN poll found that nearly half the country doesn't consider themselves part of either major party and call themselves independent. It seems like JD Vance is trying to broaden his appeal outside of mega Republicans. Watch this clip. I have seen some progressive criticisms of me personally saying what experience does the vice president of the United States have with hostile high stakes negotiations. And I would point those progressive critics to the fact that just two days ago I spent over an hour on the view. So I actually have great experience and very hostile negotiations. And I've used that. I mean look Joy Behar is way tougher than the Iranians and she and I are best friends now. We were we were more difficult to deal with than the Iranian government. He's being funny. I tell you something. I wish Joy hadn't negotiated this Iran deal. It would have been better. First of all, I'd make him a nice meal.

13:28My lasagna would sit down and talk. It's like with JD, he was here the other day. I respect the office. You know, I believe in reaching across the aisle. I do. Yeah. This is why mega Republicans, they're coming around. No, they're not. A lot of them are. A lot of them are. The Republicans themselves and Republicans are. I think the Republicans are because if you look at it now less in this country, less people identify as Republicans than ever before. So I think there has been a shift. I don't know why you're so in love with JD. I wasn't in love. I'm not in love with him. I'm not in love with this administration. And he's not her best friend. You are watching me on this show. He just called you his best friend. That is not usual. It's like three minute viral rant yesterday about this administration. It was like how does she love them? And then you're criticized and saying, I'm not a literal man. I actually heard what you said to him. Right? Because he was sitting in the middle. You were here. I was here. And you said to him, I mean, I was a backhanded compliment. You said to him, you know, you're pretty good.

14:28For a Republican. Yes. And then I sat over here and was like, what about me? You don't even seem, because that's like a mega rep... No, but it's a different... He also came in, listen. He came in strategically prepared to disarm us with niceness. He came in being affable and laughing easily and being very nice. I mean, I worked on you. Didn't work on me. It didn't work on me either. So I have to say, I did not work on me. It didn't work on me. I think it did. It did not. I respect the office. I'm a civilized human being. When someone comes on my show, then you treat them like a human being. For Barbara Walters. Did say that. When someone... I was... I learned under Barbara Walters. Yeah. Barbara Walters told me that when I was... Because she was on top of it. When I first started coming on the show as a guest co-host, she told me, when someone comes to your house, you treat them well. Yeah. She did tell me that. I have to say, though, I've been a little bit dismissive of JD Vance's, like his political ambitious, because I personally think Marco Rubio is a more formidable candidate.

15:29But I have to say, after having him here, I do think that he's more of a political heavyweight. I watched him at our table, play nice. He dodged questions. I mean, you were grilling him. Everyone's grilling him. He dodged. Did he answer anything? Did he answer anything? For an audience that's not particularly friendly, then he goes on Fox and a kind of different JD Vance comes out. So there's this chameleon aspect to him that can be helpful when running or it can look disingenuous. Well, I'm not sure he has. And this is genuine. His book reveals him, which is why I was... I asked that in my question. He speaks about falling victim to ambition in his life, and how he sought power and a position over any virtue or value. And then he goes on to talk about his evolution of faith. But that part never got away from me, because the biggest criticism of someone who doesn't trust him, is he changes colors based on the tree he's sitting on. Yeah. But maybe... It is true right now. But you know what? I believe that people are redeemable. I remember when he wrote the Hillbilly LJ. Yeah. He grew up poor. It was a really good book.

16:29He was not the person he is now. I agree with that. Maybe he'll go back to that. Who knows? I can only hope. But be aware of how he flips and flops, because one of the folks that captured him for me was a tweet he made in 2016, which said, to Christians everywhere, everyone is watching how we apologize for this man, Lord help us. And to me that captured the branch of the problem. And he becomes the vice president to that man. Think about that, Joy. Power, corruption. But back to the... And power is... And half for DZAC. But listen, he... I mean, I'm glad we had this conversation, but he responded to that question about his qualifications to negotiate the Iran deal with a joke. And I think that kind of... You know, I know he was joking, but this is really serious. I mean, the truth is, we sent Donald Trump's son-in-law, who has no negotiation experience, Donald Trump's best friend, friend Whitcalf, who's like a real estate guy, and J.D. Vance, to negotiate with the Iranians,

17:30who are some of the best negotiators in the world. Yeah. You want to ask why the deal is so bad? They don't have that. They don't say they've never won a war, but they've won every negotiation. Yeah. And like that... Never lost the negotiation. And they won't know. The Iranians are notoriously difficult, and now the fact that because of Donald Trump in this war, they know they can close the straight-up for a move that... Yes. So let me answer something. If Donald Trump came on the show, would you be rude to him? No, I'd be respectful to him. I would want answers, and I'd want to make him answer. Well, Donald... I would treat him the same exact way I treated J.D. Vance. I would stand up as a respect to the office, and then I would push back on the lies. That's correct. And you did. And that's right. 19:30That feels like an expensive party. Because you want everybody to see your face on my new face. You guys know my best friend. Lee. Lee, he just got a plastic. He just got a deep plane, something or other. Face lift. He has thrown four different parties in the last two weeks. Really? And he's like, he's turned into narcissists. If there's anything that he can see his reflection on, he stops and he looks at himself. He calls me all the time just to show me. I have a neck. Ah, I'm beautiful. I mean, he's just... He is so excited and he wants to celebrate it and he's happy about himself. I get it. Yeah. I believe in sharing. Yeah, you don't keep if you get something done and you love it, you tell other people. Yeah. I know, about people that get their breasts done, not usually after a cancer. But when they just get their breasts done, they're always like, you want to take it? Oh, he's water. Yeah, they're always offering it in the show. And when you wear they go, they'll even pull them down. And I always... I always wanted to share it with that in touch. Because you want both it feels real hard. I'll wear four more clothes. I literally walked out. It was like, you want to feel it? Who did that? You know.

20:30I know. Oh, I don't know who did that. Oh. Come to that. I know. You're still here. So, but what do you... You have to bring a gift to one of those parties. What would you bring? Have besides a nice pack. No, I don't know. What else could you bring? I don't know. I'm a girl with a makeup. I'm a girl. You would mirror with lights. I don't know. But I was at one of Lee's parties the other day. And I was standing. It was him and two other people. And I was the only person there without a face lift. And I was beginning to have neck and V. So it looks good. Getting the turkey neck. Oh, he's... He's a turkey neck. Oh, he's a turkey neck. I could give this to you for Thanksgiving. I never thought about a breast job until having kids in Sudden Lake. I'm weaning. Oh, they suck the life. Do they suck the life right now? Yeah, you're like sad and nervous. Oh, yeah, I see. I just weaned off of it. He kind of self-weaned. Oh, he was like so sad. He was like so sad. But he sat beside me with the size of my breasts.

21:34And also now that there's like Botox, talk about bringing b y o b, bring your own Botox. Yeah, yeah. Um, that also, I have a little of that. I've always said that. I get a shot here. I get a shot here and a little shot here. Those are really... It's invasive, it's like a facelift and cut in an adjoining place. No, they're not. It just keeps you sort of stop it. It stops you from looking like a Picasso painting. But honestly, sunscreen probably did more for you than anything else. So I never went in the sun. I am either out of the sun. I'm a... Don't go in the sun. If you want one tip from somebody my age, who has good skin still, don't wear it in the sun. Or wear a half-wear. That SPF put it all over the sun. Cover up. Yes. Cover up. That's all. That's my one tip. No wonder my neck's a turkey. No. I'm in the sun all the time. If you're a sunwisher, but you're gonna look old in 20 years, before we go. Look out now. No, you don't. So what does male friendship mean to you? I mean, it means everything, you know, accountability. You know, especially between the two of us and in our core group. You know, we keep each other honest. And, you know, we tell each other the truth. And we don't shy away from everything. And there's, you know, genuine love and respect there.

This is literally how we named the book Husky and Hatch. Well, let's talk about the book as you two wrote a couple of things. Two wrote a book called The Husky and Handsome Guy to Grilling. Yes. Bless you have sauces and a barbecue restaurant in LA called AC BBQ. Yes, ma'am. Besides it being delicious, what do you love so much about barbecue?

32:45Oh, the community of it. Yeah. You know, just just just just what you know what barbecue does and how it brings everybody together. You know, everybody in here can bring a dish to the barbecue and it's just a family reunion. It's fun. I've been a model. It's down to the- We need the bottle. We need the bottle. We need it. It is, you know, I mean, it was the thing that when we started this idea, it allowed us to travel across the country, meet so many cool people. You understand that barbecue is regional. Yes. You know, they different styles. But what we love is that it's still this community of celebration and everybody getting together and having a blast. And that's what we were able to develop and why we loved the brand and how we created it. And we've been just still loving it for just like four years. So you have a favorite region? You know what I kind of found out is I love Texas barbecue. I'm saying who's going to kill me for this one. But I like that brisket in Texas. I like that bark. That's my thing because I'm a crunchy kind of person. You know something you're making me hungry now. Yes. So we're grilling with Anthony and Cedric.

So you guys, a lot of people are going to be doing barbecues this week. Yeah. And this is the bar this day. And next week I think it's the important bar. It's the huge rise coming up. I'm June 10th, of course, you mentioned that. Yeah. I like to bring a little gift when I, because I'm the well-bred up person. Oh. What do you suggest that people bring? Yes. You know, this is the thing about it. If you can cook, then, you know, if you can really go down, then always bring, you know, like, you know, like a good family dish that you love. I would say people love to be, to have something that they don't have normally on the menu, right? So if you got a great family dish to do it, but baked beans is kind of my go to, like I like to bring a good baked bean. Look, my man. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

35:47Go over there. Water's go. Joe, drink it. Well, if you, I don't think you can have a good barbecue without some ribs. The Memphis rub. This is the Memphis rub. You know, you got a little brown sugar, got a little garlic powder, got a little cayenne. And then, you know, this is what they would call a dry rub. Nice. You know, so Saturday night, we tried with the country and just picked up these recipes along the way. Yeah. You know, from people in their backyards and their restaurants and family recipes. Can you just buy that already, mate? This is how I rub my ribs. You've spoken a cookbook about the vibe he brought. Yeah, so Uncle Lloyd is really, how I got introduced to Barbeque. He was that, that, that, that uncle that threw the, you know, any day was a great day. any day was a good day for barbecue, well, Lord, it didn't have to be a celebration. But he would be on the grill and DJ at the same time. This is like playing a record,

37:48flipping a rib, you know. And it just was always a celebration with him. You know, all these little sands for days. And you know, don't bite your fingers, I ain't got insurance. So, you know, like, you just love that energy. And it was one of the things that when I started to embark upon this endeavor, it was the spirit of him that made me think about why we love the idea of barbecue, it was like the sun. So, what were you guys drinking? And what cigar were you smoking when you're sitting around and you go, you know what we should do? We should travel the country and we should go. You barbecue everywhere and we should turn it into a book. And I just have to ask you this one question. Who said it was a cigar that we were seeing? Oh, I was thinking. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes. No. No, you know, said it now. You know, we have a good core group of friends that we golf with. And so, you know, we're always traveling around the world playing golf and more often times than not, when we rent the home set. And I was like, yeah, let's go to the supermarket and let's just get groceries and we just cook and they just start it from there.

38:49Who's the better golfer? Oh, oh, oh, oh. I'm not going to say me. I'm not going to say it. But I am. Don Chito. Don Chito, don't you know what? Out of our group. But I will tell you this. George has a really great swing. George Lopez is smooth. I think Set is the only one in a group that has a hole in one. Oh, that's true. Oh, that's true. It presses. So, we're going to say that. And you know, we talked about barbecue and all this. So from my audition, I basically made almost everything that you saw on this table. But baked beans, potato salad, ribs, some cut... I don't see baked beans. I was like, I said most everything. You know, a collet greens potato salad, baked beans, and something else. And I took it into my audition, and I got the role based on that.
