Hi folks, welcome to the episode of Film Study. This is Ken McKee, second-rebacked with Part 2 of Friday morning GM this week with my co-host Vasile Rico. Vasile, how you doing? Life was good, Ken. Can't wait for the season opener. Very optimistic about this Raven's team. We're really good about the new energy that the coaching staff has brought. Just one more Friday morning GM before the season opener. In fact, you made the point in our first show that will have already had the NFL opener on Wednesday before we record our next episode, next Thursday. And then they did even another game, a Thursday game, a Friday game, anything like that. I really always tried for a... I think they have a Thursday game. Yeah, they're expanding. They have Thanksgiving Eve this year as well, which is a new thing. You know, I heard speculation that they might try to have a game almost every night, except for maybe Friday night.

2:10The college football club Friday night, try to get the rest of the market. Unbelievable. The way the NFL has been able to expand, but they've done very well. All right. The DeCosta interview, very interesting. He's spent a long time at the podium. It's out there on... So, they're certainly on Twitter, but on the Raven's website too. I can look at the media website. I can add the transcript of it and whatnot. And that's kind of what we're working from here. I've also watched the video of it. I talked about a lot of topics. I guess the first thing on everybody's mind was the signing of Lamar Jackson. He reported these optimistic about it. And I think what was more interesting, he talked about not negotiating publicly, which we've known from the last contract in from this one. And then Lamar and him, and Warren, he have a pact. Yeah. So, he seemed, obviously, the causes seemed a little bit surly during this portion of the questioning. I watched the video as well, and he wasn't his usual cordial self quite as much.

3:15I think he might be frustrated that Lamar just doesn't want to negotiate until next year. Honestly, reading the pieces. I saw an interview, or I heard an interview where Lamar gave, which wasn't about the contract, but it was about he could have been making easy money when he was younger. And he was always playing the long game, how many more years so I'll get to the NFL. And that's just like the way he does business. He's playing the long game no matter what. He said a lot of his friends got caught up, you know, growing up, making easy money, fast money, and then, you know, gotten trouble or whatever. And their NFL opportunities went by the wayside. And he's, I mean, it's all speculation, right? I'm not inside of Lamar said, nobody is, be even there. But that's kind of what I'm gathering. It's, it's a little bit strange. Now, he did say they want to get a contract done by next March. But of course, they'd like to get a contract done as soon as possible. Next March is kind of a critical time because when the league year begins, Lamar Jackson's salary, if it's not changed, will be,

4:18will be hitting the Ravens cap at that point and they'll have to, they'll have to make it fit. So I have to make other moves, presumably, to do that. But Hamilton. Yeah. Who else has big cap hits? Oh, that they can, that they can push out of the future. You're saying, yeah, they have players, but they have a few options there. But you're right, Hamilton would be one of the big ones. They had probably, you don't want it, they might be forced to cut you don't want to do. Hand. Yeah, well, I think that might be either way, but like a guy like Hendrick's turn, you don't want to push that one out because he's getting up there. Hamilton's the ideal guy to push out. There's not a whole, I guess flowers too. You could, you could read that flowers and push this out. So they'd probably be the two. Yeah. So we've got a couple guys and, but anyway, the notion of having a pact was interesting. Oh, let's see. I talked about lessons learned from previous injuries and he was asked about the level of confidence in the 2026 teams. roster. And he said that he'd worked, one of the interesting things is he worked with input from mentor, Doyle and Weaver,

5:22which is interesting because this is Eric de Kostas roster. And I think a part of saying he worked with the input from those guys is making it clear that it's actually his call in the end. Okay. Sure. I think it's a collaboration and he sort of said, we want to give the coaches the personnel that they want, which means he's not one dictating is, you're going to be a full back on the roster, not, you know, and I think that certainly makes sense with the previous regime. You know, you see the Ravens had the highest paid inside linebacker or, you know, real qualms high paid inside that back. A hardwell goes to the giants and he picks an inside linebacker in the top five, right? So certain coaches value different positions differently. It seems. Yes, I would agree with that. And there are good reasons why the GM and not the not the head coach are responsible for that. And the Raven system has really stood this at test of time in that way. You know, there's a lot of teams out there going for a strong head coach system and you end up, you know,

6:24John Groot and making a lot of bad decisions for you. And, you know, making decisions that are on with have a different time perspective associated with them. So that's something that I appreciate the Raven system greatly in terms of being a fan. If anything, I'd rather cost to take the heavier hand honestly, because, you know, it goes all the way back to build ourselves. And if you're going to cook, you should let me buy the groceries type of thing, right? And there was, well, that's always been the struggle with the coach wants to hand pick the guys. The GM has to take the long view and the cost has a good track record doing social. I'd rather have the cost of, you know, take a heavier hand. I think that's one of the few things that's really represented pretty well within the movie draft day, because it's got a million problems with it in terms of BS trades and whatnot. But the Kevin Leary portrayal of the kind of the heavy handed coach you once have a bigger say in personnel decisions is kind of funny. I think. Sure. All right. You want to take a student next item?

7:24Yeah. So this is a kind of a hot topic this week. Try the loop missed two more field goals in the preseason from alley and Jake Moody has been signed to the practice squad. Mentor kind of danced around the question. The cost and his interview basically said, it's a competition. We want to take a look at him. And at one point, I think he said, yeah, you said you got to make the kick. So I mean, it's performance driven, obviously, a position. And it's not, it's very, it's not, it's not, it's black and white. There's not a lot of gray area either. Make the kick or you miss the kick. And he said that Randy Brown has had input at helping them pick eyes. He referenced a scout from years ago that helped him pick Sam Cork. And he says he doesn't have a great deal of technos, but he's in the kicking game. So he leans on them. But at some point, you know, if loops are going to be missing too many kicks, we're going to have to look elsewhere. So the guy he talked about before was Sam Gans, who was the kicking coach years ago before they brought in Randy Brown.

8:26He was responsible for bringing in Sam Cook. And if you think about the Ravens in that era, they didn't have a lot of changes. Either the kicker or ponder positions, but I mean, they had, who was the guy, Montgomery for three years. He was kind of the weird dude painted fingernails. Lots of lots of weird stuff about it. And I remember him. And then they had Richardson for several years. And he was there for the Super Bowl team and I think for about four years in total. And there may have been something is a stado right? Stado was there for a couple years. And I think that's it. I think it's those are the three guys they had before cook. And then Cook was, you know, the better part of two decades was the was the Ravens plotter and older of course. And they didn't have any changes. And with Stover and quarterback. Okay. Yes. There you go. And good player. Yeah. Good player. And and Stover was, they did have a brief spate of different kickers in there with Haushka and Kondiff in that era.

9:29And then they finally settled on Justin Tucker. He was not until four years after Stover was was for Stover's last year was 2008. And then Tucker's first year is 2012. And between there they had kind of a dark ages of some kicking problems. Zastadil. I remember one point they had two kickers on the roster. Zastadil would handle kickoffs and long field goals. And then Stover was Mr. Automatic inside four. Yeah. But like for a 50 song yarder, Zastadil. It was another guy. It wasn't Zastadil. And it was the kickoff specialist. And his name is escaping me right now. But he tried two field goals in the 50s one year. And they talked about him. He was warming up on the sideline in the Tennessee playoff game as Joe Flacco was driving him down the field for the winning. He'll goal in that game. And they had him warming up on the side. Yeah. We'll figure it out. Flack. Dilfer. You were talking about Dilfer. No, no. In the 2008 playoff game at Tennessee. They remember they won 13 to 10. And the Tennessee tied it up at 10. And then Flacco had an engineer one drive to get him down the field.

10:31And big third and two completion to heat. Where there was like the disputed. Clock thing. They disputed the lab game. That didn't. It wasn't called. And then they got them all down in. Okay. In field go range and still overcooked it. My memory of that is Ed Reid knocking. Chris Johnson out of the game with a little bit of questionable tackle. All right. But back to this year. You know, I thought the other thing that the cost of set is we want to foster competition at every position. And then they're going to have a lot of competition. And then they're going to have a lot of competition. And then they're going to have a lot of competition. And then they're going to have a lot of competition. They didn't necessarily do that with kicker during camp. So better late to never. But I know some in the fan base are thinking. Why wasn't there more competition. Given to loop earlier. There's a lot of people talking about that. And I'm not saying it wasn't the right thing. I'll just say there's a cost to it. You know, you have to you have to give up one of your 90 man roster spots. It's even more significant now in a sense. They're giving up one of their practice squad spots. It could go to a developmental player to keep freaking Jake Moody on the practice right now. Look, Jake Moody could have some immediate positive benefit for the Ravens

11:33if loop all of a sudden can't make a kick to save his life. But the truth of the matter is I'd much rather have longer beam Robinson. Any of the other guys who they lost and didn't look a Scott. I'd rather have any of those guys than I'd rather have a kicker on the roster. And if you go back a few years, I kept Nick Moore, I believe, on the practice squad for an entire season. I do remember that the stat the long snap for stash. That's right. They I did him and Moody's not, you know, what a known as an outstanding kicker. He certainly has a questionable percentages and makes it. But you know, I guess he was the best option out there for at least for competition. So we'll see how it goes at some point. You have to worry does loop get the yips just because he's in his head now. Because he missed the one the other season. He missed the one first preseason game. Now he missed two here. It's starting to get kind of wonder how where his mental state is as far as confidence.

12:35It's not I'm not unconcerned about that. But it will say it's a three man process and the wolf pack they had. In the mid and late Tucker era was outstanding for having the process down. And this this group Nick Moore, I think is you know at the top of long stappers. I don't know where actually is as a holder. He supposedly was a really good college holder. They had some issues with with a combination of things going wrong in the kicks. It's not all on loop. And that that's where I think a lot of people don't really. Get this plugged out properly. And you know, if it could well be that they bring in another kicker and he has problems too. Because it was really more equity, but they can't get rid of equity because actually you know a guy they just drafted and they're happy about him as a punter. It could be a lot of things that are going on here that that we're not really privy to and I think it's. I have some insight into this and some ability to look down the barrel and look at the rotation of the ball and see if it's if it's what I hope it would be.

13:42As fans, we have less insight into that than just about anything else on the football field. You know it because even the Costa really talks about it. You know, I'm not an expert on this. You know, this is not my area. But I feel I feel limited in that way. And I just I feel like a lot of the people were talking about loop or loop psychology or this or that are really kind of overreaching in terms of where they really believe this thing is. Anyway, well let's let's hope that any brown gets a sorted out, you know they have some time here to kind of a group and hopefully it becomes something that you know iron sharpens iron they come through the fire on the other side. If they are having lacking complete confidence in the kickers, I do think it will incentivize Jesse Minder to go forward or more forth downs in the high. Yeah, well let's see if that happens or or punt more it could be it could be either and I agree that that might be a reasonable solution particularly if the defense is extremely good it really could be either of those we can see a more cowardly punting arrow we can see a more aggressive.

14:44Fourth down you know season out of Lamar but I'd be happy if he's taking all of those things into account. I'm loving it and I'll see we still don't know how aggressive he's going to be but I did like the fact in the last game we have a chance to talk about this yet that they had a third and six they ran a run play to gain three yards and you know if they're going to do that already they've been talking the headset is do I have two downs or I just have one down and mentor had to somehow negotiate with them OK you got if it's fourth and three or less you can go from this area of the field but you but you got at least get us to that point and then do it. And then do you call the run play and they they in fact got exactly three yards and and then they threw a fourth down completion to Scott on the next play. Yeah interesting how that exchange goes apparently do it wants to know if I am the four down territory or not and mentor has to tell him and then he decides how it goes and seems like a pretty good divisional power yeah I mean certainly you got to tell your opponents of coordinator that you have to down to get it not just one so that's that that's important.

15:47All right let's move on because we got a lot to stuff to get through here not not a maddie bk ramp up is right on track we talked about this all before he talked about before the fourth games that really does I think mean the third game if we're to take him at his word I don't know it's going to work out that way but that's the way to cost us framing it up. Yeah before the fourth is the key term key phrase there and they should know because they're not going to have it practicing pretty hard to see if he can will be able to handle it before you know relatively soon now. Yeah okay so he talked talks about Rashad Bateman situation said he's disappointed that they have to deal with it I don't know if that means he's disappointed that Rashad did something that you know obviously violent that he should not have done or he's disappointed that Rashad. Disappointed that Rashad's mother of his child is making up something false apparently she retracted her I don't know all the details but he said that they're cooperating with the league the legal decide the league and the authorities are doing an investigation they what they have no time line it's all it's completely up to the authorities in the league to determine if and when Rashad will be suspended.

16:55That's really all the Ravens can do in this situation I know there are people who this resonates with them in some way there's nothing else for the Ravens to do in this situation unless the Ravens were privy to some other evidence in which case the first thing Ravens better do is turn that over to the appropriate authorities not act on it themselves and say or or worse destroy it and pretend like it never happened kind of thing any of those either of those things would be obviously be wrong but but they have to wait. They have to play the waiting game now and unfortunately it puts us in a bad position as fans and you know puts team at a bad position in terms of what might happen during the season this year. Well the fan base still a scar tissue from the Ray Roy situation even though it's been more than decade now but you know they stood by him until they couldn't and I think they're just kind of let's let everyone else make the decisions we're not going to be the judge like we were then because they probably shouldn't have been. Alright so one reporter I forgot who it was said regarding the offensive line did you get done what you wanted to and he said we're headed in the right direction he praised ledford's coaches still doesn't know what it's going to look like on week one I think he just wants to give.

18:08Mentor and ledford and Doyle the leeway to choose either postacre win at that point might from my way of of viewing the situation I think it's very clearly going for the opener based on how they protected. I think it's going to and if he's not up to par postacre it's time to run for him and then we take it and just by order of mentioning the cost it did say Gwen's name before he's you call it Ethan but he said Gwen's name first which is perfect. He's the first which is probably the way he's thinking in his mind the peckin. So yeah a lot of praise for mentor and the new coaches I think it was Garrett that asked him a question and he said that's a that's a softball because they were kind of hit him pretty hard with the with the Lamar contract stuff in the beginning. Shocking that one of the internal guys either mink or downing would ask a softball question but yeah. Right. Right. So he seems to be I think he said he's really impressed with the focus of the coaches is a word that he used which is I mean by every single data point that we have we haven't had a regular season game but I've been thoroughly impressed from the preparation from what we've seen what we've heard from the players what we've seen from the wired what it was reported from practice.

19:27We've seen the preseason and what we've heard mentor say the podium and the rest of these the staff of highly intelligent men I think we've ever had a joke that the players play better because the coordinators are younger and better looking. He said something like that this week. I guess that one that's a good one. So go ahead there were questions about Marlon Humphrey and obviously this year in terms of playing better than last year as part of that but also the fact that he's in a contract year and what his future looks like with the Ravens. The cost of specifically avoided talking about Humphrey's future he said he thinks he's going to rebound this year I suppose that's his future in a sense. But he dodged questions about effectively 2027 and beyond he's not I don't think he's willing to talk about that yet. Obviously there's multiple questions on the Humphrey it's a very textured discussion as to whether you'd be back at the Ravens playing a different position whether or not he still can be a quality cornerback missing a lot of it will depend on what happens this year.

20:27And at some point I think Humphrey probably does move to safety I've talked I've asked that question of him before during camp and and he said yeah I see myself there sometimes right now he's just rocking out at corner and trying to play that position well so that is where the Ravens need him this year there's no doubt about it they need him to have a big bounce back year that gets him a high percentage not a high percentage a meaningful percentage of the way back to his 2024. So because he's been a multi multi time all pro multi time pro bowler he said leadership because it was a point of question it was basically why didn't you reduce the salary at least basically yeah and he didn't touch that he didn't touch it how can you know you can't touch that in the media you can't touch the next season in the media either. But he said he's confident and Humphrey and I'm thinking more confidence in him I know he looked really good but breaking up passes the joint practices yeah he's not much else to go on in this preseason or this summer.

21:30Right right so he just forgot fuck nano making the team he said he got a lot of calls about him and then he that made him think kind of all these other teams are interested maybe we should just keep him and they most interesting comment I heard from this. This section was a player that lost the roster spot because they kept the Fog Nano is on the currently on the practice squad so I was thinking is it lichtenhan is it a see their lichtenhan or they were going to do 26 24 I you 10 dollars by the way nobody's forgotten by the way there's been a whole lot of Twitter traffic about that. Yes yes so I wish somebody was there to ask him how married are you to 25 25 I wish that was a follow question that you know that would have been a great question to ask to cost at this thing and to be fair I think you still I the bed is still up in the air until opening day so if there's somehow to cut or trade Fog Nano and then pick up a defensive player you would still win the bet so just to be fair I'll leave it there we we did say that you know okay who do you think it was can.

22:40I don't know I mean because it doesn't it doesn't it almost seems like it can't make sense like I would believe that if it was he's really on IR that it's Randall who spot you lost the spot and I'll leave is the fourth running back that seems like more possible it would have made a. Well he said practice squad though that's what you mean those are the that's how you turn the got or Pessa you know Petsa could have been the guy maybe or 10th offensive lineman could have been lichtenhan or it is possible 26 24 yeah yeah maybe Isaac or a rocker who knows yeah I don't think I've been a sixth at the air I think it would I think it would have yeah it's not a seventh corner because they lost all their guys so it could have been a fifth inside linebacker so I guess it could have been the Luca but that. Doesn't really make a ton of sense there's there's not a lot of players that make sense for that thing that the description has given by the cost so you know it's he needs a little bit of true serum I think I think it's straight answer.

25:57You have to do extensive amount of research to be good there are people that spend copious amount of money time resources energy they dedicated their lives to basically becoming good at it all that and still. Tapery's working on something and and they would meet in the hall all the time and that is a by the way that's a very healthy thing to have with a coworker particularly when you're both responsible to each other for exchange of work and whatnot you know I had that at work for many years with a guy would go to get a soda with.

26:58And and you know it just be an opportunity for the additional two or three work conversations in addition to gossip but but two or three work conversations that would we could have that's but anyway the thing he said about mentor was that he's never in his office that he's always spending time with the defense and it is a very different kind of a thing I mean I know. So you probably think of it exclusively as a positive from your side from my side is like I can see some value of the CEO head coach again. Yeah yeah I mean we're going to see if there's some lapses of organization or something from the thousand foot view that mentors not as good at this hardball was because he was a little bit more I guess detached and sort of the overseer of everything but it's kind of like a metaphor there one guy's up high in the office. So above the team the other guy is with the team interacting hands on so I understand what you're point for sure and it could be we'll have to see but players seem to love mentor you know there was a clip of him rapping to M&M and all the players are going nuts and I saw a story about that and weaver did something first and it was originally you know they make the rookie sing a song like they used to do when they had their skits years ago and then somehow the coaches there wasn't planned the coach.

28:20The coaches just did it spontaneously it's just it's definitely the honey moon phase right now. It's it's it's definitely I can only take that as a positive connection moment for those guys so very very good. I wonder if we're getting any insight into weaver the delegator sorry mentor the delegator given that he's got weaver and they should have some you know some things that he could delegate to him we'll get that in a question by the way so let's come back that a little later. Some praise for Mike green. We asked if he had the cap to make a trade at the deadline this season such a Jeff Z question I said never know injuries and incentives will play a role I don't think of his incentives as being there but but it is because you next year's cap is affected by not likely to be earned incentives so if you lost four or five million dollars there they may require some of this year's cap surplus to be pushed into 2027 to bridge the gap with the Lamar contract. It's 10 million that they're taking into this season if I remember correctly you said there's been some seasons we're carrying only a million and I remember those type belt seasons to so we could make a trade.

29:28We could roll it over what you said the incentives are counted till next year right sure whatever you don't use your role the usual rule is you need about five million to get through the season but that that could be already that could be built into other contracts that they can then adjust on the fly. So they still have the option to generate money it did make that point he knows they know where to get more cap if needed. Yep. Okay so yeah in regards to the accoy trade he made the point that there's the Ravens are between their prowess finding UDFA's and picking more players in a draft and every other team a league they have more players around the league and to cost his big point which was pretty good you know stats I'm sure he came prepared the Ravens have had 23 players claimed off the roster in the last 10 years and they only had one claim that they've made of their own many asked if anybody knew and nobody did.

30:28I thought it was the I thought it was a special teams guy from the Patriots but I was wrong. I remember they brought him on late but no it was Delshon Phillips kind of a role playing special teamer from few years ago. Yeah very very useful players that turned out for the Ravens played played a little bit on defense and looked really good in the preseason and honestly it was a pretty good pretty good player for them. There's something else that was in there they said they claim 23 players sorry they'd had 23 claims made against them in the last 10 years by the way that number seems a little high to me. McFarland put out some list of all the players have been claimed that I didn't think it was as high as 23 because I didn't think it averaged 2.3 per year for 10 years. Last year they had either 3 or 4 claim but most years it's kind of every other year at 0 and then they have 1 or 2 claimed I don't think it got up to 23 or 10 years but it's still no doubt about it they had many more players claim then they claimed themselves I'm sure he's accurate about the same thing. There is a pod out there it came out yesterday on Thursday regarding NFL player origin I want people to take a listen to that it is some of the most stark information you'll ever hear about the Baltimore Ravens player development system they've had 70 of the current NFL players there are original origin team 76 came from the Baltimore Ravens the next highest in the entire NFL is 62.

31:54And then that's a drop of 14 right if you drop again by 14 to find the teams that have had 48 there's three teams that had 48 and they're tied for 24th 25th and 26 I think in the whole league so you know it's it's it's the Ravens completely dominate that and I highly recommend that pod by the way there's a lot of I think there are a lot of good upstream implications of what that is and a bunch of downstream implications as well that's Ravens should gelously guard. That sort of thing even though they're not the ones making making use of all that talent. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's you got losing guys but you get to keep the best ones that you have so it's it's a great thing it's found the by Ozzy all the way back one and they care forward so that's part of the Ravens culture the fabric of the DNA of the Ravens way that I hope they keep around. All right, let's jump over the mailbag we got a number of questions here and these we shouldn't take us as long I don't think because we've gone over some of this stuff but zeb Moses thanks for providing a question here regarding the cost is 92 pressure and the age of the cornerback and defensive line which level of defense would you I think he's talking to two of us prioritize for top resource investment in 2027 be that draft capital or cap.

33:12It does not seem possible to address all three levels with draft picks or UFA contracts I really know your answer on this so do you want to put the money at cornerback at inside linebacker or at defensive line. I want to probably say corner but I think there's a chance that Jesse Menter with his ability to kind of prop up corners of lesser pedigree with the chargers says we only need a wig and we don't need to lock down guys which has been against my sort of team building philosophy going back to the 2000 defense when you had starbs in the calisthen and if you can get those two lock down guys on the outside your golden. Second place will be defensive line depends on how to be fair as if he's on the team next year or not I think people's some upside and they retain many and transition is going to anchor your D line and it looks like the outside backer are going to be in good shape for the next couple years inside linebacker I'd like to go as cheap as you move us of course.

34:16I kind of knew that was coming I think I would go defensive line first then corner based on where we are I think the defensive line is a much it's a much more serious problem in us also a much more difficult size and shape pool to get the guys you really want it's been entire years where they've been like 12 draftable defensive lineman in fact I think it was eight a couple of years ago when they got Travis Jones they you know there were a very limited number of total draftable defensive lineman. And they happen to get him so anyway I'm I'm excited about. I'll be very excited if metabike plays well enough that they want him because he has to play really well for them to one next year it's about $11 million in capsavings and I think it's more likely they're going to be ready to cut bait on that contract and we'll have to figure out how to get a younger guy but either way I mean metabike he's not a young man anymore he's you know he's on the at the end of his life. At the end of his second contract next year and you know it's a normal time you get cuties it's a and you know with his injury history there there are real questions about what's going on.

35:26Absolutely the pencil plays one option and not necessarily a high likelihood but he could play well enough to earn a renegotiated contract in some sort of a team friendly haircut. Yeah I'm with that and that's certainly a possibility but that he'll have to play his way into that in a similar way real quantum myth could be in the same position there that they. Yep that they figure out a way to do that you've also made the point you'd be okay trading real quantum myth for a bag of chips is I believe what you said now. You're okay with some job. Some draft capital involved you would want to get. Yeah I probably have some value because the Ravens are on the hook for the bonus portion no matter what so you're getting. You know with top 10 ball I'm backer inside blind backer for 10 million or whatever 15 million is still probably some value to the team that would trade for him. We'll go on to the next one I think we already touched on a put this from Richard zinc are you surprised the Ravens did not sign Lucas Scott to the practice squad I thought he played well in the preseason. Yes I thought Lucas Scott was a guy I thought they were intentionally trying to develop more this summer including trying to include him in more routes trying to get him more involved in the offenses of pass catcher.

36:36We already know as a blocker that's what he would really provide the team and I think all the you know the guys they have is potential blockers whether you're talking about Vanette or you're talking about. Smith are one year band aids to the current situation so it's they you know they need that guy and they need that guy potentially is a replacement in 26 but they certainly need him as a replacement in 27. So I was surprised and I was. Tessa was one of the most surprising players yeah younger players they kept on the practice squad. I agree just not not truly a developmental player let's go to Mark Pankhurst from the UK. Thanks UK Ravens appreciate all the questions you provide and all the listens thank you very much. Do you see a perfect game day D coaching partnership with mentor watching the line and I'm sorry with weaver watching line and mentor watching the backs and secondary. That's the way that weaver has talked about it. Right I think what we've seen from Anthony weaver on the sidelines recently first of all the camera loves him.

37:41They are they are absolutely laser focused on him and they don't spend nearly as much time with mentor. Which is which is really interesting when they're on defense but they try and get reactions from from weaver and he's a probably more of a reactive guy. I think if I were to say that the relationship it wouldn't be online and it would be defensive line and the backs it would be the guy who really needs to get enough days of players and motivate them versus the guy who's running the defense as a whole. Yeah well yeah of course mentor needs to be focused on everything because he's not just a defensive coordinator or defensive play call he's a head coach. There's a lot more to do in game day than just that part so trying to balance this to might be a little tricky for him. A lot of other coaches are on the lead or you know mastermind offensive coordinator or offensive play callers but they're not quite as good at the game management aspect. But I have heard weaver say it's sort of a perfect marriage because but he is a front seven guy by trade and Jesse is a secondary guy by trade.

38:41So they both kind of have their own unique specialties that they can blend together to make what could really be a dominant defense. Yeah hopefully. Looking forward to it we certainly saw that in the preseason. Let's talk to Brad McGowan. He says I'm excited about Yuan and Zayan Young however with the ravens have been better off drafting Rubenbane and then a guard in round two. He's got more on the sheet on this but I'll refer us back to draft night which was honestly one of the things that we liked about the pick and I thought that really worked out getting Yuan it was the freedom it gave them in terms of positional variability after round one since they need multiple linemen. You know including a center they didn't get it was damn good thing that they got you want to in round one because that that that then said okay we can draft whatever you want after that. And there is there is a little bit more this question but go ahead with your thoughts on that. Well Zayan Young is one of my favorite second round picks.

39:44In recent in recent team history so I love that pick I like Yuan I think that was a safer play. I don't recall if there was a guard of you know a plug and play starting guard available in the second was it chase basham this maybe I think pregnant to the third what that kind of tells you something about what the rest of the league thought about him too. So you know Bane is probably a higher upside than you want to more of an impact you know an impactful player because past rushers are more impactful sometimes then linemen but i'm happy with the way to play it out i'm not i'm not regretting that okay this sort of sequence i'm not regretting it either I think there is a cost to drafting an offensive linemen the first round I think one will start to feel a lot of that and we should be thinking about it now but when we'll start feeling a lot of that is when it comes time to sign you want a two. So you sign you want a two a second contract because they won't have the protections of the 50 or option to incent you want to make a good deal with the Ravens they have that with with you know with starts coming up they have it with.

40:49We had it with flowers in terms of getting a pretty good deal on him there's a little bit more to Brad's question he says it's obviously to really make this call but it does seem like we spent enough time talking about how the Ravens could have drafted a more premium position with their. First pick and still potentially got a solid interior linemen the second round i'm excited for the player venga could become but the Ravens perhaps dropped the ball here. You know the one thing i'll say the draft as it played out i think dramatically showed that the Ravens made the right move drafting you want to in round one based on how many offensive linemen came off the board quickly after that. Yes so i'm of the mind that top pass protecting offensive linemen are are worth a premium whether the guard the road is a center whether it's a tackle right tackle even so i've kind of shifted it's not premium positions premium skill sets and that is a premium skill set but you always going to have to really plug and play i mean he gets a little bit of a month grace period but if you if you take a guard in the first round he better be pretty close to.

42:00For a level is rookie here at least that's what you hope for right right right i would agree on that okay we got one more question here also from Brad McGowan just going to read this record machine because it's a longer question. We often talk about how great of a kicking coach Randy Brown is but we sure the Ravens know what they're doing letting him identify kicking talent on the draft just in tuckers undrafted for that's worth and he's the best kick of the organization ever had. All the kickers and punters that we have drafted by the way that's not a big long list or anything i have been underwhelming over the past couple of years that wasn't really very good does fourth year and then moved on to a franchise loop looks like he has the yip and actually equi it's too early to tell although he's looked solid in the preseason my main question is why are we using draft picks at all every year there are plenty of undrafted options. Hoyland was solid last year in camp and had a solid season in the ufl making a 59 yard or even. Okay so basically he's questioning whether you should ever use a draft pick at the on a kicker or punter.

43:04I think it's could be a legitimate point although the league has gotten to the point they're sharp enough now all 32 teams where there's not a lot of guys lasting to the late rounds that are going to make the team I mean they're even neither the seventh round picks this year made the team they they're have a list I think the cost of said that's kind of a bit is done now years ago when the Ravens were you know miles ahead of a lot of teams then I would have said don't take a. Kicker at all as far as Randy Brown having input he definitely should have input he's one of the best kicking specialists well known throughout the country. The only thing I can really question is why not give loop competition earlier and that could have been another guy that brown liked that was one issue I had with the previous regime that I think might have played into that decision again this year but now that they have brought in competition I hope that that's kind of a new. A new a new kind of mantra is everybody has competition on time yeah alright well maybe that'll be the way it goes that brings the end of today's show Voss always a pleasure talking flip over with you and watch tell folks about your new business venture.
