The dockers threw to the preliminary final the first time since 2015, when they were beaten at Suviacco by the Hawks as minor premier. They were beaten by Hawthorne on the way to Hawthorne's three-peat. Now, it might be the first time that they've met the swans in a preliminary final either. In fact, it was 20 years ago, back in 2006. And of course, the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, where the swans knocked over the dockers, it was the first time that Frio had gotten through to a preliminary final, no, a well beaten at the Olympic Stadium by the swans, because they would meet them again in a preliminary final seven years later and win that one in 2013. That's been three men's only grand final appearance thus far. Max, for an intriguing preliminary final next week,

3:29and we're expecting it to be on Friday. I don't know why I just don't announce it already. It's the worst-case secret in the country. But next Friday night, SCG, Sydney and Frio mantle, it makes running, triggering encounter because we know what Sydney are missing. We know that they're missing those fire players. We know what they can do. We saw it last Saturday and I was lucky enough to be up there at the SCG last week and let me tell you, the crowd really made an impact. I have never heard that crowd so engaged as what it was last Saturday at the SCG. And you can't tell me that wasn't a factor. The whole competition can slide against us and the umpiring was a cherry on top of what's been a disgusting year of treatment by the AFL towards us. I mean, how they can justify that density decision was and momentum was going our way and all the dropping the ball decisions, the last rough decision. I'm so sick in the stomach while I saw tonight and honestly, if those umpires had any shame, had any shame, they should accept the car as a gift because that's what they deserve. There was the occasions of playing in hope to play in to help again for him. You're the better side of the night. No, you're hurting right now but you must be so proud of your team. Came back from a big deficit, hit the front, never gave up. No, I mean always proud of that guys. We always give ourselves a chance and it's been a sweet because I love the the grit that the team showed tonight, the show went throughout the year. It's tough when it's that close. How much pressure did you feel coming in tonight? You just said the performance last week was embarrassing me in your words. So knowing that it was a dual dip on all those second chances here tonight how much pressure did you feel? I mean, it's funny and it probably sounds weird but I feel like we thought less pressure this week than we did last week. We probably put a lot of pressure on ourselves last week to come out and be perfect and do it and make it almost flawless. That's just not funny. You got to get in the arm wrestle, you got to get the scrap and it's going to look messy, it's going to look chaotic and that's okay. That's what we want to be in but we won't run for that last week but tonight we want to put the work through it, try and get to work and like I said, I reckon it was more mistakes tonight but we did it the right way. We had a number of players last week that were tested off the back of pre-port performances.

11:52How proud are you of the response that we've seen from I mean Boss pops out before, Tracy competed hard on night and Shay Bolton just did Shay Bolton things. Yeah, I'm so proud of it and I'm more proud of the week that we had on the back of such a tough week at last week. We could have gone one or two ways and we went the right way. We lent in, we supported each other, we are, we normalised those feelings that are all having and we try our very each other and let each other know what we love about each other and that's what you said in I mean sides, the bunch of guys that love and love and love and free together and back each other to the hills. That was of course Caleb Sarong, I've got John by the line because they're going to go against each other next week. It's time for our feature interview on 49th line for tonight and considering that's the docker's and the cats wanted to try and find someone that's been a part of both camps but my guess this evening not only played for them but it was also part of St. Kilda. He played for the Brisbane Bears, played for the Brisbane Lions and in fact he even played for Williamstown in the VFL. These days he's a proud dad of Jasper Fletcher who's a two-time premiership line but he was a handy footballer in his own right. A speak of Adrian Fletcher and he joins us on a 49th line this evening. Welcome Adrian. How are you doing? You're going well, Matt. So what do we find you these days? What are you up to in 2026? I'm in Queensland living in the sun. I got my board shorts on. I'm enjoying the environment up here. How to complain when you're living up there in the middle of

15:58your sun's doing some amazing things with the Brisbane Lions. You get the sunshine up in Queensland. Life must be pretty good right about now. Yeah, I'm pretty close to the Gabbo. I get along every time they play at home and I really enjoy sitting in the crowd sometimes with these and commentary stuff as well but just really enjoy watching his journey. I guess before we go into your journey just how you're feeling about the big one this weekend, the Lions take on the crows of course the semi-final at the Gabbo on the back of last week. How's the week been up in Brisbane? How do you think that this one's going to play out? Yeah, well I was down in Sydney last week. Their work rate from the first bounce wasn't there. The pressure on the ball wasn't there and they got outnumbered in their defence. So basically the extra Sydney players in their work rate were outnumbered at the ball. So they got to turn that around this week because I'd say Adelaide will try and flick the ball on quickly and play a path to going on the Sydney.

17:00Jeff at Chat with Jasper in the aftermath of last week and asking what went wrong for them? I could say that they just they just wasn't on as a team. It wasn't any individuals, it was a group. Yeah, they may took it easy but I said that they didn't. I think you just as you know there's no points up for grabs. It's just to be out that you got a double chance. This is a duel down now. This is your chance. You've got to take it. From what you saw the cruise last week, is it a lot's been made about Brisbane's record at the Gabby and recent years especially in finals. But does that give you any cause for concern what you saw out of the cruise last week? No, definitely, you know, Rank him and those types they can really hurt you if they get off the chains. So the lines will have to be at their best at their tavern pressure or win the ball around the contest. And if we play a front half, the lines got to, including our four line kick a winning

18:02score. But if it if it's mine was 10 India, India four line and they're getting a lead out of the center bounce, it's very hard to stop on the Gabby. I want to go into your story Adrian because when you come up, you usually referred to as one of the great junimen in VFLA for football. How does that turn sit with you? Oh, it's not perfect. I've had more clubs in Greg Norman as they show. That's a good way to say Australia. I was a tavern boy. He comes on the Able Tasman with my Commodore pack to the roof and drove down the Jalongas as a pick 20, down Jalong in 1980. It was 88 offseason and my first year at Jalongas 89. So yeah, it was daunting because I never left Tasmania as a young boat. So I didn't even know where Jalong was. I'd ask somebody once I got off the boat. So there you go. I wouldn't ask you about Bernalke just really quickly because that's where you came through. But just what has happened with the TFL in recent years and unfortunately,

19:07it's demise. How does that make you feel as someone that obviously it was such an important part of your fully development? Oh, when I played it was 28 year olds run around and that was substars. I remember Danny Ling, David Pears, John Kloeg, and up down to Richmond then on to Adelaide. I mean, then there was Andy Lovell was there. Maddie Queen went to Hallfront as a draft pick. I mean, there was talent everywhere. I mean North Hobart had a heap of them in the world, Steve McQueen. So the competition was really strong and most of the best talent up north would come down, played in the Southern League. And then they got the full tazzy Statewide. And that went well for a while because Stacey Reese Jones and those types come over after returning the NFL and Coach. But then it started to get watered down. I mean, the opportunity with the money wasn't there. So then it became a minor league. But now I think with the state league going

20:10with the devils, I think it will build back up again and I'll start to get there 28 and 27 year olds fine again at the top end. Obviously your soft spot is with the lines, but when the devils do run out year after next, is that going to be a club that you'll follow just as closely? Oh, no, yeah. I was a startup membership when they've detained all those ones. So I wanted to do well, the passionate state. I mean, it's been 150 years. I mean, they've played for a 150 years down there. And it'll be good to say a tazzy team run out on the MCJ or at Holland, then at Salamanka when they build the stadium. It'll be amazing for the state. It'll bring money into the state. And yeah, one day I'd love to see you pretty a member. And once you think he's career. Speaking of day, you're in Fletcher on footy nightline tonight. And I want to go back to you mentioned you get to Jolong handy days for you to end up at the

21:11cance in the height of the Malcolm blight era. Of course, Gary Ablett running around a whole host of superstars. What was that like for you to enter that environment? Well, I was number four. So I had bare show number three and Gary Ablett number five. I probably didn't go near my locker for about three months because I was a bit concerned. You know, they didn't know my name. And Gazza probably still doesn't know my name, but I was superstars. He ate healthy there, busy. Just so many great players. And they ended up playing in the Grandfornal 89. I tried knowing games in my first year. And then I played eight. And then I played seven. So I was down backwards. I just couldn't break into the midfield with Gary Hawking and those thoughts. So after playing with Gazza and picking the ball into the four line and watching him do his he star stated, um, kick that we showed up. I moved to some CUDA in 92. And that's where my next club started from. So you get to the saints in 92. And this is a side that had come in on the back

22:15of making their first final series in umpteen years in 91 knocked out by the cats of all teams. Tell us through that year that you had at the saints. Yeah. And I'll play that every game check one. We played in two finals. We played Coneywood out at Wadley. Um, they finished third and we finished six. There was a top six then. And then we played the Bulldogs a week later and they smashed us. And then they played in the Furniture Final and lost to somebody. I think more than a cruise or somebody they lost after that. So I really enjoyed my time there. Nikki Windmar, a funny play decision there. Nikki Windmar, um, Stuart Loha, Tony Lockert, he used to play in a pocket sometimes of Lockert. I used to watch him strangle the the the full backs and that was enjoyable. I think he got David flood one day out of Waze and passed out. So I don't know what Amy Wiese did for that. But it was good to have him next year because he knew that he was going to be pretty safe up there in the fort on. And I used to swap with Robert Harvey through the midfield.

23:17The problem with Robert Harvey didn't want to go and play in a full pocket. So I didn't see too much of the midfield time there when I was there. Would you have liked to have stayed at St. Kilter longer than you did? Oh look, I played every game and you think, all right, we we those the go show the contract but it was reneged on when I come back after the press decision there were certain things that it wasn't fixed up correctly. And so then I thought I I've had an after this is it just doesn't make sense to me and I was going to go back to Tati. And then I scoyly cried and rang me up and said look come up and play in the press game with the Brisbane Bears. So I took off and I did that. To go from to St. Kilter now you find yourself at a flitually in club like the Brisbane Bears. Well what was that like to walk into in day one? Oh it was tough. It was the first year they moved to the Gabba. So that was a good start. At least it was in a bigger city than the goalcoes. I didn't think it would worth on the goalcoes and it showed it didn't and

24:22sometimes they probably still haven't that problem at the moment with the with the last all year there but but we started, what was he with the coach? You know we were getting smashed for the first year or so and then they recruited you know the beauty come up, links you come up progland but come up. So we started to get some really cool group of senior players and then the best thing was the young kids Boschie, Lapige, Bradshaw, Norge or Lapin. All those accommoders they turned up the club, Chris Scott, then said had the use below it. So I was actually starting to on so I'll be playing the final 95 against Column 1v8 at the MCG and we nearly beat them and they went on and won the grand final. The year after we played at a Premier Column against North Melbourne and then they go on and win the grand final against Sydney the week after. So there was some success there and then 97 we played in a final against

Welcome back to 49 line Adrian Fletcher, years my special guest this evening after the docker's knocked out the cat's by 14 points in the first semi final. I mentioned you had Robert Walls there as your first coach when you get to Brisbane and then he later makes way for John Norley. What were those two alike in terms of working with them every day and the difference in styles and how they went about it? Yeah, yeah it's a good call. Talking cheese like Walls he was about. You put your body on the line and he was very big on tactics like the kick in he created the huddle, four lines sliding, sliding in behind the four that leads out all those things. Whereas Norley was more basic, let's play Yard, he's pretty. It was more about the work rate and they both had their strengths and their weaknesses.

27:34As you know that 96 after Walls he set the foundation with the hardness. We created a running game and we probably should have played in the grand final 96. We let ourselves down. Tell me through that 96 season in particular because we talk a lot about this being 30 years on. We talk a lot about from the Fitzroy angle from what was going on with them but it gets a little bit lost in the wash that you're in the same position at the Brisbane Bears. You have this uncertainty then you're merging with another club. What was that like for you and being around that club with being in the headlines every five minutes with what may be in the future and then finding out you're going to merge with Fitzroy? Yeah, well, 96 we didn't know about it but then off season obviously it started to poke it head up in the media. Then it happened, I said, other than I was off the over they merged. Then I think it was eight players had to come up and be part of the Brisbane Lions and everybody thinks he's going to win the Grand Final a week

28:38out of the year after because he got eight new players but as we know you've got to get to get the culture right, you've got to get to know each other. Those guys had come up. We're a little bit disjointed because Fitzroy had been the passion of them and we were a little bit disjointed because we were passionate about the bears. So it took time and then basically 98 they finished last and then I think because I went for a 90 and a 97 and then 98 they finished last and then 99 they played in us. I think it was a semi-final again when we would lead them up. So it took three years to get that culture back. Was there a much of a change in the day-to-day operations that you noticed from that 96 off season going into 97? Was there any real changes that you noticed? Let's just bring people together. I mean you start a new company and you bring two companies together and you start. You just got to find where you fit in the in the in the circumstances where

29:45where you fit in that that system and once you find that everybody falls in the line and that probably takes 12 months for that to happen. You experienced the first year with the Brisbane Lions and then you said you end up at Fremadele in 1998. What precipitated that move? Oh look I still had a year to go in my contract but it was sort of it was sort of in my meeting. I didn't have a great year in 1997. I was I was solid and they thought I said that they'd look at the trade if something was available and Priya come with a four-year deal for me and I was 27 so it was probably that what do you do? You're trying to fight the fight or you have to go and seat yourself up for life and I took that opportunity there you go. I didn't want to but it was it was just it just made sense so then I I wrote across the Priya that was interesting

30:45times out there as well. Was that the toughest move going cross country from Brisbane to Perth? Yeah it was tough it's a long way away. We went to it was a footy state at least it was a footy state Priya started in 96 so that was their first year and I'd come in there what was it knowing eight two years after that started so there was still that was still a bit raw there was those young players at the club that were very talented and the nation was the coach and we just had to get get to work and and get that Melbourne style of footy I fell style of footy you couldn't play an uncontested brand for the whole game with the way nation won the play they actually be on the ball we just had to call on the happy medium and we started to do that as time went on. Very different freemant all then to what we know now what was that like to be a part of that program especially when you have the monolith that is the west coast vehicles sitting on the

31:46other side of town. Oh yeah it was that was probably one of the juggernaut of the A.Fell and we were trying to make our way we beat them in the derby in 1999 and that was just got the monkey off the back they've never won a game against the west coast and we beat them and mod just kick four I think I ended up getting winning the medal on the day the Ross Glen Mennie medal and that just got the monkey off the back people started taking a series so there and they were like finals those games they were very hostile it was a bit of 50 cuffs most times and it was passionate two-team-team and people wanted either barracks with west coast or they barracks with prey on you could strut a ram for a week if you won and we won a couple of times and that was that was enjoyable. Did you find some more people jumped on the purple train as those winds started to accumulate? Oh no doubt

32:49I know doubt and then thought they recruited really well they got Pavicine, Haisley, they had some young good young talent. Getting made great decisions on the list management in a few home like let change climate go let Brady Holland go let just think we go some black went so they needed the people those young guys but they got it right at the end and hopefully they can win tonight. 35:03you're not sort of sitting back and reflecting too much when you're playing but I can reflect all what's on and they're making proud I was lucky enough to hand him over the jumper on this first game and you know just to be able to do that and hand the bat and over. Look there no guarantee to be playing in a ground final they've got a lot of work to do there's two and we'll probably this week tomorrow night the biggest game they'll play in a long time and then if they win that they've got to go down and beat Hawthorne at the MCD so there's a bit to do but he's very lucky at the moment but he's still he's still on his journey and hopefully he'll become a little bit to it all one day.
