On this week's date night, Josh is fresh off a trip to Spokane for his 16-year fantasy football league (!!), which somehow turns into a conversation about longtime friendships, faith, community, marriage, and making time for things you love when life gets busy.

We also get into how we do football season and why having different interests can actually be a good thing, and some amazing things you guys shared that make you feel loved by your spouse.

Everybody, welcome to the Game Time podcast. I'm Priscilla. And I'm Josh. And where are we going right now? We're going to one of our favorite Poke spots, your Rilco Cafe. It is one of our favorites. You know the fun thing about this podcast is I feel like it's going to diversify some of our date and it spots, but Euroco is one of our go-tos already. So let's get into it. Football season starts this week. And coincidentally, Josh went on a football-related trip last week. I thought it would be fun to have Josh share a little bit about that trip with you guys. Josh, where did you go last week? I went to Spokane, Washington with friends I haven't seen and probably five to seven years. Some even longer. Seriously? Yeah, the last time I saw Matt and Kenzie was there waiting it. But they still look the same. Matt just has a really big mustache, which is cool. I went up there to do a live fantasy football draft. The league that I'm in has been alive for 16 years. This is year 16.

So it can legally drive and it's pretty wild. It just kind of shows how old I am, but also just how cool it is to have some really good friends that I'm still connected with and have known for a very long time. And it was a great trip. I left on a Thursday morning, got in first afternoon, and then got home. I'm sorry after. So literally one day. But eight really good food saw some other friends that I hadn't seen in a long time. And talk football and life and kids and Jesus and new life events and stuff. It was really cool. In a time. That's awesome. I was happy that you got to go this year. So how did you meet these guys? Did you already say that? I briefly mentioned it, but most of us met at GCU. Most of them live in Spokane, grew up in Spokane. We all met at GCU and spent a while graduating in 2015. So it's been 11 years since I graduated. They're really good guys, just good Christian guys that are competitive and like football,

more than me, which is a surprise to pursue. I'm sure. But it's just a good group of guys that most of them love the Lord and are just easily relatable. Love sports, love competition, and easy to have conversations with. So a good day and a half trip. I love it. When I met you, that was one of the highlighting things that I noticed about you. That I liked fantasy football. That was a disappointment. Just kidding. One of the first things I noticed was the friendships that you had. If anyone is your friend in real life, they know that you're one of the best kinds of friends out there. And I feel like you attract people who are also really good friends. And I think that's always really special for me to see. And also really inspiring because I think that you've made me a better friend. Do you contribute anything else besides this legacy football league to your long standing friendship with these people? I mentioned a couple things, but mostly I think every one of us knows Jesus. And that kind of binds everything. And we usually talk about how our relationship is with Jesus and what's

kind of been on our heart and how has God been working in our lives. And that right there is enough to keep us in close relationship. And then obviously football and family, mostly family. Just keeping touch and most of us are in the same season. We all have two plus kids and are going through similar things, Matt and Peyton and Smoky. All of kids that are older than ours. And I can connect with them and talk with them about what they're going through and how to navigate stuff. And each kid is different. So it's nice to get to different perspectives. Genuinely caring about each other has been great just asking how are you guys doing. And then having the trust to be able to share what's going on in our lives has probably contributed the most outside of our relationship with Jesus to the longevity of the league and our friendship. There's a lot there, but it's not just the love to play fantasy football or compete against women. Thank goodness because I was like,

do I need to start a fantasy football league to have that level of friendship with people? I don't think that my friends would like that. No, but with running, right? Like there's run clubs and people join run clubs and they find really good friends and they usually stay friends for a long time. It's just another way of having community. It's just another way of bringing people together. And obviously the competitive atmosphere helps keep that, but at the same time it's more so just staying in touch with good people and keeping good relationships. That was mainly what me and Smoky talked about. We're not as invested as we once were, but we don't want to leave because we love the guys so much. We just want to stay connected as much as possible. And this the most fun avenue may not be the best avenue, but it's a great channel to, hey, great job kicking my butt this week. Hope your kids and wife are doing well. How's the new job? It's just an easy segue into real life conversation. I really enjoy it. And then winning obviously is a bonus.

I don't actually know if it happened last year, but usually when someone has a baby, they win that year. I did win one day as he was born. I had a really good team out here. I always usually have a pretty good team. Do you think that you're going to win this year? Consensus was that my team was the best draft it. I've come nothing to do with it on Sundays. I picked the line up and that's it, but it's engaging. It's fun. So Josh wasn't always able to go up to Washington to be able to do this draft because some years we had babies and I needed his help down here. There were years where financially it wasn't great. We're so grateful to be in this season because not to knock on other seasons. The highs of earlier seasons is that we welcomed new life into the world and that was the most amazing thing ever. But there were a lot of sacrifices that went with that. Like, financially, we had a new life to take care of so we couldn't spend money on playing tickets. Support-wise, I'm super grateful that you knew that it would be hard for me if you left. Right after I had a baby born, a lot of times the conversations I have with my friends in your life

are the inspiration for the questions we have on this episode, the topics we have on this episode. I've had a lot of interesting conversations lately over how limited their time is now for them and their husbands to be able to do some other things that we're doing in the season. And I totally get that because even though we're in this season now, we were once in that season and so I can totally relate to that. You can pick whether you want to give advice from the old-us perspective of not being able to do this kind of stuff or the current state of our lives where we are able to do this kind of stuff. I'd love for you to give some perspective and justify the amount of time that you spend watching football. So basically, what I would say is that if you look at your phone and you find the fantasy football app, you'll notice that we'll have a lot of things that guys can look at. Okay, explain yourself. And so, when I'm getting at is I'm just being a little troll and I'm used to that, carry on.

Okay, but in all seriousness, one main reason that I think it's valuable is it just gives me a break. My brain is constantly at work on you and on the kids or something else. And it's a good way of focusing on something that is not immoral and actually has really no added value other than entertainment. Unless it becomes an idol, it really is not something that's bad. It's wholesome, it's fun to watch. There's big hits, there's touchdowns, there's celebrations, there's community, there's so much that goes along with it. It's just a good avenue to distract from everyday life for a short period of time. When we first were married and trying to figure out how to balance and prioritize, I wasted way too much time on researching or watching highlights or trying to watch all the games. It really doesn't matter that much. You can just watch highlights. Obviously prioritize your family, prioritize your wife.

You'll be able to watch the highlights later. It's not like a work for ESPN or anything. You have the opportunity to go watch all the cool plays in the 10 minute video versus a two and a half hour or three hour full game. There needs to be a collaborative effort so that everyone is taking care of versus just you taking advantage of football season and not helping at all. I think that you do a really good job balancing it. This is such a silly example of football, but I think it bleeds into other areas of relationship, for sure, like more serious things. But it all comes down to communication, honestly. And I think it's also learning to love each other and understand things that they love. We'll have to go deeper on this in later episodes because this episode is getting too long. But having good communication and then also understanding that you're two very different people with different backgrounds, different up rings, and you're going to have different interests. There's no way that you're going to have 100% the same interests. I don't think that you need to have the same interests

to be aligned in a relationship. And I think that's something that we learned thankfully early on. The last thing I'll let I will say because Josh made me think of it, some specific things that have helped with the silly thing like football is I know for me, I like making it a social thing so that I am not just sitting there annoyed that he's glued to the TV. We invite friends over, we make it fun, we go to family's houses, and we make it into a community's social thing. And it makes it so much more fun for me. And then it's fun for him because he gets to watch football. Really quick, we're going to show you our food. Then we're going to eat it, and then we're going to finish the last two segments because we're starving. All right, are we ready for this? Well, I'm so excited. Okay, I'm starving. Let's dig into it. I guess I could start by telling you guys what the question was. What is something that you're significant other or someone that you know did that made you feel loved? It sounds like there's some great spouses and great people in our community. And I love that. That's so encouraging. And I hope this brings encouragement

to our whole community to just hear some of the things because I know that it encouraged me. I'm going to pick two to three responses. So the first one was after working 18 hours, my husband was home and awake when I got off of work. So we could all have dinner together. Yeah, that's crazy after 18 hours. I just realized how long that is after reading it put forth time. That's awesome. I love that. When dying after the three hour day. Yeah, all right. This one, I love this one because I hear it all the time. And it's so simple. It's such a simple thing that you can do for your wife or friends, but apparently it means a lot to a lot of people. Filled up my gas in my van. You feel like one gas all the time. I try. And I really appreciate it because the times that you miss, and I do it, I literally always think, oh my gosh, this is the first time I put gas in six months. It's so nice that he puts my, yeah, that and washing my car. It's just simple things. Okay. And then the last one was my spouse got up early and smashed out the loss of the dishes before I woke up. I like that.

I think that's so cool that your husband did that for you. Yeah, I love all these. It's funny. There's a lot of acts of service people on here. It seems and if you're looking for any ideas, husbands go fly to a different state to do a live fantasy football draft. No, I'm saying if you need any ideas, invite me. Invite me. We can go to Vegas. Then fill up the gas tank. Be awake for a dinner with the kids and smash out dishes. Anyways, we're getting long-winded. Enjoy this montage of the rest of our dates. Adios, Amigos. Bye friends. Basically. Today for you all.

I said telli Vlad.
