From the inside of the Burns podcast is here inside the birds.com. And don't forget, you can get the inside the birds podcast on all podcasting platforms. Their offices and coverage continues. And the Eagles, they have a draft coming up. And of course, we're inside one month. We're gonna take a look at now that free agency is in the books. What is their draft plan? What are some of the things they need for the future? Adam Kaplan is here for our Friday edition of football and for us. Inside one month to the NFL Draft. Now, Adam, they might not be done with free agency. How he continues to make some moves around the edges. But now the focus turns to the draft. It is Mike, you know, we're the draft for nine to four weeks from yesterday.
06So yeah, we're now four weeks away. You know what's it she might, I'd heard this before, but I just heard it in this week. NFL teams, they do the month of the draft. They try to figure out, in particular, what are teams in front of us gonna do? And obviously, if you're picking it one or two, it doesn't really matter. But if you're picking a 23 like the Eagles, you wanna know what are the teams gonna do that are ahead of us? And that's why it's important to kind of identify what are the current and future needs for this team, the Eagles in particular. All right, let's look at that. The needs for everybody always says, how can 23 help me right now this year? But as you have said many times, it's about the future too. It's not just, hey, 2026, this player helps us. So what are some of the things they're looking for for the future of this roster? All right, so Edge, Mike, how did we sign Jalen Phillips? We would not even be talking about it because what would mean would be Phillips on Nolan Smith and Arnold Evocati. So they'd be set for the season.
08And I know in the way the Eagles do business, and when surprises they pick up Nolan Smith fifth year option or some people would question it, and when surprises they picked it up, but and that's due by way on May 2nd. But Edge absolutely, the Eagles kind of told us this. They tried to re-sign Phillips that didn't get back to Edge is their number one need by far, the way they see it. There are a couple are under that, but Edge to me, it's not about how many players they have. They're looking for a major upgrade, although Jalen's son is really come on board and he looked good late last season. Well, Edge, would you say that at 23 that's firmly in picture then? Well, Mike, it's always, who is the highest graded player at a position at a position of need for the future? So Edge will absolutely be in play now. Again, if the player they want is taken before them, you look down your list, and the worst thing you can do because you need this position, is take a player that has a lower grade
08over a position like, the next car back that you can't, the list from how he really screwed a draft up was 2020. When he framed that pick with Jalen Rager, we put it out in March that year that that was the guy that they really wanted. Over Justin Jefferson, which how he's admitted was a mistake. You admit that over recent years in interviews. You can frame picks. When they frame the Andre Diller pick 2019, they're gonna take Jason Peters replacement. You can't do that. It's the highest player graded on your board for a positional need of the future. All right, Adam Kaplan, you mentioned corner. They did sign one to a one year deal. Rick Rowland is here. They also have Quinnian Mitchell, and of course Cooper DeGene. So they have a really good room. But behind that, what's the future look like? Mike, see, here's the thing with two. He's still a nickel as we understand it. And there are questions of where Vic Fangio sees Cooper DeGene in 27, 28, and 29.
09Now, will Vic be there that long? We don't know that. We almost retired this year. So you have to look at it. But corner right now for the future. God, the Jones is on a one year deal. Rick Rowland is on a one year deal. It never worked out with Ringo. Unfortunately, Ducorian Bennett was a big disappointment after the trade. He's on the roster. I mean, he still has time on our contract, but they don't have a future at corner opposite Mitchell right now. So that is clearly a future need. All right, Adam Kaplan, we're looking at some needs for the future is less than a month away. They brought back Dallas, Goddard, but they don't have a lot behind Goddard and Goddard's on a one year deal. The sand is going through the hourglass on Dallas, Goddard for sure. It is, he's 31 years old. Mike, they really don't have any one-on-one contract past this season. It's about the future with the draft. So I'd answer next, man. I know some people might argue would they take a tight end at 23? That will talk closer to draft week, like what we kind of narrow down when we think they'll go.
09But the organ tight end is just, he's a unicorn, man. It's an extremely deep draft. The tight end is what one offensive coach told me who's grading the tight end for the team that he works for. He's not seeing the tight end draft this deep, but the kid at Argonne, it's so much better than everyone else. That's why he's going in the first round because he's studed. So if he's on the board at 23, he would be in play. He would be, but here's the thing, Mike, it's, they'd have come down to position on value. Some teams, not the Eagles, because Eagles to Dallas got to remember that that, that's done me when they took Goddard in the second round. And it turned out to be the right decision. Courts was only 27 years old. Think about that. And you're taking another tight end, like that was surprising, but how he's shown a willingness to do it, by the way, he would have gone to a team in the AFC South in the first round.
10That team told me and they went up making a mistake. They should have taken him in the first round. So it's not a value position, but the guys got to be special. And the Falcons unfortunately got it wrong so far. With Kyle Petz, he's been nowhere as good as they thought he would be. Yeah, well, there's a lot of good young tight ends in this league right now. You're seeing them all over the place. Colts, Chicago, other places, obviously Oakland, excuse me, Vegas. There's a lot of really good tight ends out there. So see how much more they get out of Goddard here. Safety, blanket ship gone. Epses back, Makuba last year. That safety room certainly is something they're probably going to be looking at. Yeah, it's absolutely for the future. It's Makuba and that's it. Michael Carter got his significant pick that as we expected. Under Sam got resigned Marcus Epson, a one year D.O. You'd rather than be a third safety. Gigi Graywall, I play on special teams. He's got a brand of Johnson who did play a little safety and he could play nickel. They don't have it, Mike. It's for the future and they got that's another position, Mike.
12They have a lot of draft picks that they're going to need to look at sooner rather than later for the future. Nine picks this year. Also, they did sign Fred Johnson to come back as kind of a swing tackle, but Lane Johnson, the sand is going through the hourglass on him as well. So tackle and guard, I guess they got to start looking at the line because some of these guys are bagged up and age is starting to play a factor. Yep, to finish us off, right tackle. It would be good for them to look at it real quick. Like sooner rather than later, this could be lanes last year. And then guard, it's not that they need it, but Dickerson, he's got knees of a 40 year old, not of a 27 or 28 year old. So it would be who have them to look at a center slash guard. And Jurgen's obviously with a back front about his health. It wouldn't hurt them to take a look at interior offensive lineman.
12All right, that is for the future. What about for this season? We all know they have nine picks. They've got first, second round, two, third, two, four, two, fifth. So there's the ability to help this team out this year. What are some of the needs that they'll be looking at in this drift? Yeah, so it's edge, but it's a little different for this season. Like they, like right now, if the season opened today, it's no one Smith, it's hunt. It's a beckety. And that would be it. So they would have to get at least that one more and BG could always come back. You want these mediclers to know what to play. So they could get away with it by waiting and just sign another free agent. You don't really want to do that. The no one Smith is a good run defender. He has trouble staying healthy. He's got a smaller build. And edge to me, though, that would be the number one need right now just for the season. And as we told you earlier, it's also a major need for the future. That's for sure.
13We know that the edges you mentioned for the future now. And then I would imagine the interior of that offensive line is also something they have to look at for this season, especially, you know, the way Jurgen's, you know, he's struggled with injuries. And as we know, landed Dickerson thought about even retiring. Yeah. And Tyler Steen, I know how he said at the combine that he's the starter at right guard. Well, it's easy to say that in March. Let's see what happens. We get through training camp. But right now, it's, you've really Lampkin, he's never played in an NFL game. He's an undrafted free agent that claimed off waivers from the Rams. New Kennel, who's better off at center than guard, the cross and Jake majors, who's also guys not played. He's a long shot. And Hollis Pierce has, who's got tackle length, who got the cross-strain latin training camp as a guard. But remember, that was Jeff Stalin, Mike. So again, they need to take a look at this, Mike, this is, this is an issue for, for this season. Well, and, you know, we had Andrew on yesterday about that, you know, talking about Fred Johnson being back in whether or not, you know, he fits the new.
16You know, offensive line system, that remains to be seen. Well, he does because Mike, he, he's been with a bunch of West Coast offensive coaches. And like Chris Cooper, it's kind of what, so different than it had stout been here. The stout didn't fit, think he fit how he, I know this is a fact, would not bring the guy in. He wouldn't do it. That didn't idea was actually, as I understand, it stouts to play guard, like no one thought of that. And what a decision they, I don't know if they would have won the Super Bowl two years ago. It's kind of hard to believe that, but it's true. So yeah, and by the way, Fred Johnson is their swing tackle. You play back up right or left, but they don't have a swing into your alignment of back up guard center. They need that guy right now. All right. And then finally, you know, we looked at future, but I got to imagine they are still looking at a safety or are you comfortable with a Marcus Epps, Andrew McCuba duo? No, you want him to be my, he's more of a box safety.
18You want him to be your third safety and by the way, he is 30 years old, but the time has really taken hard here. He had the ACL injury two and a half years ago. Now we believe, as we reported at the time that he was going to cross-strain with safety because that's what he played at Duke, our understanding is he's going to be in a mix for safety, opposite McCuba, but they could get away with it between Epps, McCuba, Sam and Carter and even Brandon Johnson, like they could get away with it, but it's not good enough, Mike. So why not get it an upgrade? It's not about how many players you have, it's about the quality of the player. And McCuba is not shown with this build, Mike, that he's got a build that's going to stay healthy. He's kind of wiry. I know he's put some mass on his frame, but that will not definitely keep you healthy. So they need a little bit better players around him. All right. Of course, Eagles made some moves this week. Fred Johnson, Elijah Moore, we'll see what else they have. They traded for Andy Dalton. That became official this week as well. So we'll keep our eye on Tan and Ricky as Adam and I talked about on Tuesday.
21Go back to our Tuesday edition of football at four on all the platforms to check out that conversation. We'll see what is next with this off season, but the draft now comes into play.
