They are wrapping up spring break now. And coming out of that spring break, position battles need to be.

2:03We're going to say closer to being determined, right. Later on in this episode, I'm going to be joined by Spencer McLaughlin from Lockdown College Football. I'm going to talk a little bit about it. But just I think that it's important to acknowledge that now that you're coming back from spring break. This is no longer this like getting to know each other, getting a feel for practice, getting a feel for what's going on. And yes, they've been practicing and they've been working. But from what we've heard so far has basically been, yeah, you know, some guys are getting steps with the one with the ones because they were here last year. And it's not necessarily indicative of if they're a starter or not. Well, this spring game is going to be what? Three weeks from tomorrow. All right. Tomorrow is going to be the 21st and then 28th and then 4th and 11th. Spring Games. This spring game is three weeks from tomorrow. You got to figure out some things again. I'm not saying they need to be settled and decided.

3:06But you've got quite a few spots to talk about and quite a few spots to look at. Obviously, there's quarterback, which is what we're going to talk about with Spencer McLaughlin, with Aaron Filo and Tremel Jones, which I don't know how many times I could say this. I know everybody else wants to talk quarterback all day, every day. And it's talked about a thousand times about who's having a good day of practice and who's throwing the ball better? Who throws the ball faster? Who throws the ball with better placement? Who throws the ball with all this? The reality is none of that is going to be the deciding factor, right? It's not going to be who throws the ball faster. It's not going to be just, hey, he throws the ball better placement. It's going to be and the coaching staff has always been very open about this. The starting quarterback battle is going to be decided and determined by which quarterback gives us the best chances to score efficiently and consistently and explosively.

4:08That's always been the thing. And I think it's important to acknowledge that. Like that's what they're looking for. And when we had coach someone all here last week, we kind of touched on in a little bit of like, we know that you want guys to be explosive and efficient, but like, where's the trade-off, right? Because just purely stylistically, Aaron Filo is probably going to be thought of as the more efficient, but less explosive guy. And so with both guys that are different just stylistically again. And yes, some of that does come down to Tremel Jones has a stronger arm and a more overall arm talent. But Aaron Filo has been in college for longer. He's been in the system for longer. He knows more. I will also say that. From what we've heard and what we've been told and I don't know if this is, you know, a coach speaker, but not both. Like they've said, hey.

5:09You know, Aaron Filo and Tremel Jones are not that far apart in terms of knowing the playbook and knowing how to operate the offense. Right. Tremel has been able to study it. And over spring break, I am sure the Tremel Jones has been studying that playbook as well. Right. Like this is going to be who leads the offense better. Because while we can talk about what these guys do physically all day. And we can talk about what we see in practice on the clips that we get all day. And we can talk about what we saw and game film from both of them. Over the past two years, we'll say, obviously last year for Tremel, the past two years for Filo. All day. None of that matters. Right. Because what matters is going to be probably first off what media is not really getting in the same practice. Secondly, how you handle yourself in certain situations, which coaches are going to see better than anybody else.

6:10Like that's that's going to matter more, right. Like what we're going to what is going to decide this battle. It's not stuff we're really going to see. It's going to be the intangibles. That's the most important part of playing quarterback. Sometimes it's just the intangibles. That's it. I do think you're going to get closer to an answer, but like I said with with with Spencer later on. I don't think you're going to get an answer until August. We can we can play this game and have these conversations all we want all summer long and I'm sure we will. But does that mean that there's going to be an actual answer? No, it doesn't. I feel you got to figure out your running back rotation, right. Of course, Jaden ball is going to be your running back one. When summer was here, he's like, well, we don't have any any starters, not a single starter on this team. And that's fine. That's cool. Right. I'm cool with saying, hey, no one has a starting spot locked up.

7:10No one has this. No one has that. That's cool. We all know who it's going to be for running back. Same way, we all know BB three is going to be trying out there with the ones at Y receiver. All right. Same way, we all know Jaden woods going to be trying out there and Jack on the first blood. Same way, we all know Miles Graham is going to be trying out their lineback on the first blood. But we know these things. Nothing new. But you're going to say, hey, we're going to have these competitions and you go ahead. You have these competitions, right. That has a starting spot. Sure, wink, wink. But running back to does matter and the running back one, I think running back is the spot where you don't need a competition. You don't need to pretend you have a competition either. We all saw what Jaden ball did the past two years in the SEC. He can say he's done that the past years. Do Clark heaven fire London Montgomery. They say they've done that in the SEC behind me offensive line.

8:15Jaden bought Ken behind an offense or in an offense where the defense knew what was going to come. Doesn't matter. And no, we're going to talk more about these position battles in the coming weeks and all that tight end is going to be one where we'll talk about more tight end is honestly just figuring out the rotation. And I think that there's going to be four or five that play pretty consistently. Figure out who plays when they play that's going to be the big thing at that end. Offensive line, you've got all these position battles where it's tough because like we've talked about so many times on this show. There's guys that that could be the the best player on the offensive line or the best or that we'll say he give you the second best player on the line, right. But he plays position behind the starting center or he could be the best player on the line, but center to has. Better chemistry with the rest of the line.

9:15And then you've got to figure out that trade off there similar to talking about quarterbacks with explosiveness or efficiency. You got to figure out the trade off of well, who's the best guy and who's the best unit because that's not always the same thing. Because it's just not right like your best unit could include your second best left tackle. But as a coach, you got to decide what do we care about putting the best unit out there or do we care about putting the best players out there. Personally, like I said, a trillion times into the mic. I think that I'm the type of person that I care way more about the unit than the individuals. I've said like I get Jake slaughter had two all Americans or back to back all American. He was also the best guy for the unit. I think center is one of those spots where you probably say yeah, the best center is the best for the unit because at center. You got to handle all the communication like that's part of your job at center is handling the communication is working with that exchange to the quarterback.

10:23It is being the brain of the offensive line. And that's a big part of the opposite is probably the most important part of playing center. So for center, it's probably yeah, the best center is probably the best for the unit, but that's not the same thing for everybody. Like your best right tackle could not be great with with like could not have great chemistry with the right guard. That's a guy. Well, we're going to struggle in past probably. And on combo blocks. Or we play our second best right type of who is great chemistry them worse individually, but great chemistry. That's sometimes that matters. We're going to talk about some of these defensive position battles when we get back with locked on Gators. And I think that you have to start at f because f for me is a spot where I think it's not just an important position battle because it's, you know, it's an edge.

13:28But I think it's also your most talented position. Right, because you look at corner and some of it is like, oh, well, you know, it's a bunch of guys that we don't really know we're getting. You look at safety and it's it's two new guys coming in, right. We look at f and it's a guy that was a significant player last year in camera James. It's a guy that was. I still think your probably biggest name or biggest fanfare, I'll say, transfer portal edition in a manual. I personally, I think DJ Coleman was the best transfer player. Sorry, er, single thing. Every single thing in a DJ Coleman are your best transfer portal additions. I think Aaron Filo probably had the most name recognition come in just because he's a quarterback. But as far as, you know, who was being sought after by a bunch of other SEC teams.

14:35Right, can't say that for single thing, single thing, pretty much society's come back to school and almost immediately went to Florida, which made sense is a bunch of personal ties to to the staff. But in any way, the day shows the guy that took a visit to Florida took a visit to Texas A&M was supposed to take a visit to Missouri and then was like, you know what? And it's a huge addition, right, literally and figuratively. He's listed at six foot seven 200 or sorry, 303 pounds. Huge. I think F is probably your most talented position battle on the defense side of the ball right now. It is like, I think so at least. And I think cam James is really good. We spoke about him. Was he yesterday? Maybe two days ago. Yesterday, when we were talking about just, you know, what the most improved spots are. And I think that he was your best at last year, even over tire accept.

15:41Emmanuel, a bad day show. I really liked his film from Jacksonville State. I did. I liked his film from Jacksonville State, but he brought a lot to the table. And I think he's going to be playing a pretty similar role to what he played at Jacksonville State, which frankly, I am a big fan of doing things like that. I'm a big fan of recruiting and whether it's high school or the portal and saying, hey, we're going to bring you in to do what we've seen you do well. And I can liken this to like like Eric Singleton when he went from Georgia Tech to Auburn. Auburn brought him in and said, hey, these things that you do well and these things that you were allowed to do a lot and you really thrive with. We're scrapping that and doing something else. And it didn't work out at Auburn, right? And I hate stuff like that where it's like, why are you recruiting a kid? And I say kid just because, you know, they're in college. Why are you recruiting a kid who did this thing and you're recruiting them to do something else? Just get someone else that can do the thing and you know that can do the thing that you want them to do.

16:46Rather than saying, hey, what is it like the square peg round hole? Rather than do that live, make some sense. Hate it. Um, no stack was a spot where I think you're going to see quite a few guys can be Joe's from about you, someone that I expect to take over there just because. First off, massive human being, massive athlete, don't forget, he played soccer just a couple of years ago, he just started playing football a couple of years ago. That matters, right? Like you're going to take those big developmental leaps and you're this early in your career. And so they also picked up a bunch of weight picked up 23 pounds from last year. Like, and we said this to the day that the roster measurements came out, 323 pounds, that's a nose tag. That's your nose tackle for the floor debaters. Again, this is a defense where you're no longer looking at the 345 pound defensive tackle, 345 pound nose tackles, 350 pound nose tackles. That ain't a thing anymore. Not in this defense, not right now. They're trying to be, you're, you still got to have someone that can play nose tackle and can still hold the gap and hold the point of attack, but.

17:52You need. We're going to say a little bit more burst coming off the line there, right? You're trying to be at least upfront a little bit more aggressive and flying downhill. So. Yeah, I have a guy like Joseph about you there at nickel. You're going to have Kanye Clark, Dylan Perter, Elijah Owens, all all newcomers there, right? All newcomers in a nickel and at star, whatever you want to call it. I think that it's going to end up being Kanye Clark, right? From everything we've heard, the coaching staff loves him. The coaching staff seems to be really, really impressed with what he brings to the table physically. Right. We've heard about that what he did at the gauntlet. We've heard what he did lifting wise. We heard all that. And I think that when you're hearing all that. It's like, all right, the physical you're passing up so far, right? Like you're doing really well with the physical. What are, what are you bringing to the table mentally? What are you bringing to the table in terms of playmaking ability?

18:53What are we seeing there? Which that's stuff that we're not going to really see, right? But Kanye Clark has more experience playing FBS football than, then I'll win to work harder, right? Perters refreshment. Owens coming in from juco. But again, they're also, by the way, I thought it was interesting. They're all different sizes. Kanye Clark is listed at five, 10 Dylan perters. I think this is at six feet and Elijah Owens is at six two. Nothing significant about that. It was just an interesting thing to know that they're all different sizes at the position. There doesn't seem to be like a set. Hey, we're looking for this exact body type this size, whatever. It seems to be like, it's like, hey, we're looking for this place. Can you give us that? I should put my tongue. Can you give us that place? Can you do that? And that's a matter. Right? And so Nichols, you know, interesting corners. It's just a bunch of guys, right? I think corner. There's three corners that I feel really comfortable with.

19:54And everybody else just needs to compete and never play in time, right? Nothing. You look at a D. John Johnson. I feel like I know what I have in D. John, right? I feel like I have a. Average athlete. That is physical. Above average technique is sometimes going to get a little bit beat. And burned a little bit just because of the athleticism. And by average athlete, that's not an insult. By the way, I just want to make that clear. Average for. A corner for an SEC starting corner average athlete, which still a really good athlete. Just average there. And I feel like I know what I have there. Right? He's been consistent. He's been reliable when he's healthy. He's out there. Then you have Chromani McLean who. Has some flashes of just being. Elite, right?

20:54Like he's got some flashes where you just look at him and you're like, oh, holy. It can't even say it on the show. Right? Genuinely can't even say it on the show what you see some flashes. And then you see some flashes where you go, what the another thing I can't say on the show. It's it's stuff like that. It's a guy like your boomer bust your Marcus Peters here, but I don't want Marcus Peters always. Right? I need I need someone that's going to level down a little bit. Be a bit more consistent. Sure, I'll take less picks if it means less getting beat. And honestly, I don't think that's getting fixed. I don't know if that's ever going to get fixed. Just because like Marcus Peters and like Mike Marcus Peters. Chromani is such a good athlete. Where you're always going to want to take that risk. Right? Because you go, I can make a play. And even if you get beat, you could still, especially different from Marcus Peters. His Chromani is tall and long.

21:55Marcus Peters was like 5, 10, 5, 11. Monty's like 6, 2, 6, 3. And insanely long arms. And we're even when Chromani gets beat. If he can recover close enough, he can get a hand in there and break it up. And so he's, he's never going to stop gambling there. Then there's your party flowers who. As a true freshman, the old Frank, like there's no other way to put it. He was, he was hoping as a true freshman. He came in. I keep saying I missed the best day game for me meant a lot. It did. He came in against Brennan Thompson. Who's fast as hell. And in an offense, that's like. You know, the, the Tennessee, USF style of Brian spread. We're going to take the deep shots and we're going to, we're going to run. And we're going to make you decide things quickly. We're going to run. And he, Javari Flowers made. I give his great film to watch. Really, it was. So Javari Flowers, some of them, I'm like, I'm really impressed with him.

22:55You give me any two of those three guys starting. I'm happy with it. I really am. Safety, of course, you're replacing Jordan Castell. You know, DJ Coleman, Cam Dooley, both guys coming in from the transfer portal. Both guys that are going to be your deep safety. We spent plenty of time talking about them yesterday. We're going to spend plenty of time talking about them over the course of the, the offseason really because I think that you're safety room. Like I said it yesterday, you're safe. You're upgraded massively with the additions of DJ Coleman and Cam Dooley. Whoever starts, I think it would be DJ, but whoever starts going to be a big upgrade over Jordan Castell. Who is going to start for John Sumeral at Florida? That is a fun question that will surely get an answer to this spring. Right, Brandon Olson of Lockdown Gators. We're definitely going to answer that question. Right? Yeah, for sure. You know, John Sumeral has always been very quick with this decision. He definitely last year didn't start somebody that enrolled in the middle of July. He definitely didn't do that one. No. Honestly, I mean, if you asked some Gators fans, it was decided when the portal opened. When Aaron Fylo came over because says many of them like to say Aaron Fylo didn't come here to be a backup. He wasn't brought in to be a backup. Yeah. No, I'm in lockstep agreement with you there.

26:02And inherently, the logic of the YouTube comments crowd does make sense there. That why would you leave Georgia Tech where Haynes King is an outgoing starter because he was out of eligibility and you've been in that system and Branky knows you. Yeah. I understand where they're coming from there. On the flip side of things, let me just throw this out there and play Devil's Advocate if you will. Aaron Fylo has started a grand total of, is it two college football games? Two? Yeah, he started two games in his career. I don't know how patient Florida fans are willing to be after the Billy Napier experiment went up in flames. So, are you going to roll out a guy for his third start when the season kicks off? This fall, is that, is that desirable? Is that the best option? Give us the lay of the land, Brandon.

27:02It's either, it's either third starter, first start, buddy. That's what you did. And also, the thing with Aaron Fylo is, because people want to talk about Tremel Jones, who was a true freshman last year, and only through passes against Long Island in a blowout win and Kentucky in a blowout loss. And to which my rebuttal to that is that Aaron Fylo did not throw a pass against an FBS opponent in 2025. So, we haven't seen him throw anything against anybody relevant. Right now, this is the Florida Gators fan base media everybody going, well, it's got to be this guy. And we're talking about two complete unknowns. Like, we're talking about guys who have a combined 137 dropbacks in their career. You're not getting anything. Like, you're not getting, you've never seen Tremel Jones in a situation that matters. Because it was blowout versus Long Island and blowout versus Kentucky.

28:02Never saw him in even a low pressure situation. He's only ever played in no pressure situations. And Aaron Fylo, while he does have a high pressure situation with a game in a drive against NC State in 2024, he only threw passes against Gardner Web in 2025 and he threw big in that game. My bad one. I go, oh, bad one there. It's interesting because I think everybody wants to pick a side amongst who should be the starting quarterback for the Florida Gators. But the answer is there is no proven good answer, no matter who you pick. Can I offer a quick sidebar here? Would that be the same Long Island of fans up? Fame. All right, I'm not leaving. Brandon's out. I'll do the rest of the segment on my, no, I, I, I think that makes it interesting. Like going into spring, this could be a legitimate quarterback battle, right?

29:03I mean, there are a lot of good ones, including at Aaron Fylo's former school. By the way, they've got three young guys and Alberto Mendoza, who is definitely not, you know, the Cliff Paul equivalent of the future number one pick in the NFL draft. That definitely isn't the case. So there, there are a bunch of battles and it sounds like Florida could be one of those places because he goes with Buster Fockner, his offense coordinator from Georgia Tech, which is a very fun hire. By the way, I love Buster Fockner's offense. You got to have the right personnel. You got to have a meat eating road paving offensive line and a quarterback that will run it 20 times a game. If you have that, boy, it's a good one. Do you? Well, that's what they did at Georgia Tech. Haines King ran the ball more than is running back sometimes. I have a revolta to that. Okay, go ahead. Go ahead. Buster Fockner has been an offensive coordinator for every season other than three seasons since 2007 and has been largely an aerated guy.

30:04Did he do the Georgia Tech offense power spread because he wanted to or did he do it because Haines King was the starting quarter? Well, you might have a good point that has been made there. That is entirely possible. It's definitely a Brent Key thing to lean on your own line as much as they did. And you hire Phil Trot wine floor. So you're going to have an offensive line that you can at least trust. Yeah, I just, the jet sweep usage was so great. I still want that. That's the thing I said. I just don't want my four to test it. No, I really don't. I really don't either jet sweep that will actually work. Billy, then go ahead. You do that. I'm good with all that. I want that. The only thing I don't want from the Georgia Tech offense is let's run the quarterback, especially up to go 15 times game. Well, if you have two guys that are basically the same and have no experience, then maybe you can bang them up a little bit, you know.

31:09Maybe we should just blitzkrieg them just right at the defense. It's a miracle that Haynes King played as many games as he did at Georgia Tech. Like, honestly, that guy is such a warrior. It's the only reason Aaron Filo only has two starts under his belt. I think a lot of quarterbacks would have given you seven or eight in your time backing him up. But Haynes King just never came off the field. It was an absolute, absolute. Had Georgia Tech continued their undefeated run to begin last season, Haynes King probably would have been in New York. Yeah, and that's the other thing too. People always, because I'm not a Haynes King guy. Like, I think he's very good college quarterback. Sorry. He's not an NFL guy. I'm talking NFL. It's like, no. And that'll cause a lot of people to go. He was backing up Haynes King. That means nothing. He's backing up a guy that is Heisman votes. When you get rid of the stupid. I don't know how you feel about this.

32:09I hate the college sex count for negative rushing yards for a quarterback. Oh, terrible. Absolutely terrible. When you remove those, Haynes King was a two thousand nine hundred yard pastor and a one thousand yard washer. That's like that. That's who Aaron Filo was backing up. That's a negative that he was backing up a damn near three thousand one thousand guy. Yeah. I don't I don't care about that at all. Yeah. Yeah. That is not a that's not anything to look away from and be like, ah, that's not it. No, that's that's that's that's pretty good. So bring it back to to this battle. Do you think there's any chance? Any chance? John Sumrell names a starter. I'll just throw a date out there. April 7th. No. No. Okay. Let me let me let me extend the date. Spring Games April 11th. So I think at the earliest, it's going to be done. But even then, I think you're going to take this. Okay. I'm going to I'm going to give you a couple more dates as to when you think a starter could get named.

33:11And you tell me whether it's over meaning it goes past or under. Okay. Okay. Okay. April 12th. Over. April 28th. Over. August 10th. Slightly over. August 20th. Under. Okay. So you think he'll name one before week one. Yes. Absolutely. Okay. I think I think two weeks prior to week one is probably when you're going to like me that answer at some point. Yeah. You got it. I mean, you could just wait until the first snap of the season. Keep it as a surprise. Give the fans something to show up for. You just you just never know. Thank you. Once again for a lot of time.
