Florida Bar Probes Attorney Halligan Over Comey, James Cases

Comey and New York Attorney General, Latisha James. Halligan served briefly as interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia starting last September. She moved fast to seek indictments against the two, overturning her predecessor's decision that evidence was lacking. But a federal judge later tossed both cases, calling her appointment unlawful. Watchdog groups like Campaign for Accountability filed complaints in Florida and Virginia, pointing to judge criticisms and claims of misleading, statements or ignoring court orders. Judges had already slammed the prosecutions before the dismissals. The cases were dropped without prejudice, so refiling remains possible, and the Justice Department plans to appeal that ruling. Meanwhile, Halligan stays listed in good standing with the bar, with no past discipline in the last ten years. This investigation could drag on for years before any action, and the Justice Department is pushing a new rule to handle bar complaints against it.
