Flooding in Northern Australia: Beswick and Daly River Evacuated

In Catherine, the river hit its highest level in 28 years over the weekend, but it's now starting to recede. Meanwhile, remote spots like Beswick and Daily River are dealing with swollen waterways, and the weather bureau warns moderate or major flooding could. Hit Catherine again today. In Beswick, home to about 540 people, the bridge is 2m underwater, and the Waterhouse River peaked just below major flood. Levels. Residents in Beswick are short on drinking water, but supplies should arrive soon, and elders say crocs in the flood waters are big worry. Police are helping keep kids safe.

Catherine's bouncing back though, with the supermarket and cafes reopening amid a rush of customers. Powers out for 400 homes, and some sewers need fixing, but the main bridge is open. Those praise the community spirit, with donations pouring in from far away. The northern territory and federal governments announced more aid, including up to $1,160 per family, for temporary housing, on top of earlier relief payments.
