Flames Prospects Shine in College Hockey

Calgary Flames fans have plenty of cheer about in college hockey these days. University of North Dakota freshman, Cole Rechny, just earned national collegiate hockey conference, rookie of the year honors. The 18th overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft, let all conference freshmen with 31 points and 26 assists in 30. The season games, Rechny dominated in other areas too. He ranked high in faceoff wins with a 54.9% success rate and posted a plus 12 plus minus rating. He notched assists in all three conference tournament games and sits on an 8-game point streak heading into the NCAA tournament. From Macklin's Saskatchewan, Rochny spent two seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Victoria Royals before choosing the NCAA route. Playing as a second-line center for the fighting hawks, he proved a strong two-way player and also grabbed a spot on the NCHC All-Rookie team.

1:03He helped Canada win bronze at the World Juniors too. He's not alone among Flames' prospects shining in college. Tyson Gross took NCHC defensive forward of the year. Jonathan Castanay and Ethan Wittenbach both made ECAC first All-Star teams and our Hobie Baker finalists. Eric Jamison hit the NCHC All-Rookie team while Abram Weebe earned second team All-Conference Nods.
