Story Transcript:

Et: Kevade lõhn tungis läbi avatud autoakna, kui Kaarel autoga poe parklas parkimiskohta otsis.
En: The scent of spring wafted through the open car window as Kaarel searched for a parking spot in the store lot.

En: Maarja, his teenage daughter, sat in the passenger seat, tapping away on her phone as if it contained the world's most important conversation.

En: Kaarel sighed softly, trying to mask his frustration.

En: "Let's strive for something good," said Kaarel, hoping to engage his daughter more.

En: Maarja didn't bother to lift her gaze from the phone, nodding in response.

Et: Supermarket oli täis müra – inimesed rääkisid, kärud veeresid üle põranda, taustal mängis vaikne muusika.
En: The supermarket was full of noise—people talking, carts rolling across the floor, soft music playing in the background.

En: Kaarel grabbed a shopping basket and looked inquiringly at Maarja.

Et: "Kas aitad mul puuvilju valida?
En: "Will you help me pick out some fruit?"

Et: " küsis ta lootusrikkalt.
En: he asked hopefully.

Et: Maarja kehitas õlgu ja järgnes vastutahtmist.
En: Maarja shrugged and followed unwillingly.

Et: Igal pool nende ümber laiusid erksad värvid – punased õunad, kollased banaanid ja rohelised viinamarjad.
En: All around them were bright colors—red apples, yellow bananas, and green grapes.

En: Kaarel tried to enjoy the beauty of the moment, but Maarja remained focused on her phone.

En: He realized that the usual attempts to engage his daughter weren't working.

En: "Maarja," he addressed her in a softened voice, "what would you like for dinner sometimes?"

Et: "Maarja heitis isale kiire pilgu.
En: Maarja gave her father a quick glance.

En: "Why do you even ask?

En: You never listen," she replied, tension rising from her words.

Et: Ta teadis, et peab kuulama, päriselt.
En: Kaarel paused, starting to reflect on the situation.

Et: "Nii sa tunnedki?
En: He knew he needed to listen, really listen.

Et: " küsis Kaarel ettevaatlikult.
En: "Is that how you feel?"

En: Maarja was silent for a moment.

En: "Yes, there's always a rush and you always have your plans," she finally said, resignedly.

Et: "Mida ma saaksin teisiti teha?
En: Kaarel realized this was his chance.

Et: " Maarja vaatas talle esimest korda otse silma.
En: "What could I do differently?"

En: Maarja looked him in the eye for the first time.

Et: "Võib-olla.
En: Kaarel sensed the deep silence surrounded by the corn, oranges, and carrots.

Et: lihtsalt me koos," vastas Maarja vaikselt.
En: "Maybe... just spend time with me," replied Maarja quietly.

En: Kaarel nodded, feeling this was a beginning.

Et: Nad jätkasid poodlemist, nüüd juba koos, rääkides vaikselt edasi-tagasi, leides ühisosa isegi tühistes asjades nagu lemmikleib.
En: They continued shopping, now together, speaking softly back and forth, finding common ground even in trivial things like favorite bread.

En: Standing in the checkout line, Kaarel felt for the first time that perhaps, just perhaps, something genuinely good had come from this one store trip.

En: Maarja smiled slightly when Kaarel placed the rye bread in the cart.

Et: "Näed, me valisime hästi," ütles ta.
En: "See, we chose well," she said.

Et: Tagasi autosse suundudes oli Kaarel õnnelik.
En: Heading back to the car, Kaarel felt happy.

Et: Võib-olla polnudki peresuhted nii keerulised.
En: Maybe family relationships weren't so complicated after all.

Et: Võib-olla tuleb vahel lihtsalt rohkem kuulata.
En: Sometimes, perhaps, it just takes listening more.

En: At least on that day, they found that working together made them better—like the fresh spring air they drove home in.
