Formula 1 is already teasing 2027 while Monza prepares to expose one of the strangest compromises of F1 2026. With Oscar Piastri saying McLaren’s simulator produced a higher main-straight speed in Hungary than at Monza...it just sounds WRONG, doesn't it? The FIA is trying to sort things out...but this year man...it's horrible.

What are you gonna do tonight? Let it be, what you're actually doing tonight Let it be, what you're actually doing tonight Take it away, Jordan Come on, come on, let's go Pop it down, all go out of it It's easy, doing a lot of all the life We have a lot to do It's climbing off on the wall, patch it up It's about 5-4 out of 10 when you get in Formula 1 started promoting 2027 already And we haven't even gotten to the third act of 2026 yet

I wonder why that could be... oh yeah Yesterday, F1's official account posted something special for the 18th through 20th February Hello There Italy glowed on the map like somebody had already ordered the confetti Totally not trying to hide what might be to come Because at the same time, Oscar Piaestry revealed something much less glamorous Clarence Simulator apparently produced a top speed that was higher around the hungaro ring than it was around the temple of speed Yeah, you heard me and Oscar Wright Hungary was faster than Monza I don't know why the 2027 tears you're appeared when it did but the timing of it Oh man, was it spectacularly awkward Because F1's trying to sell its next chapter right when the current chapter's regulation set is proving to It's greatest challenge before it in the next few hours And us recalling all of the stuff that Maxis was talking about back in 2023

Regarding Monza as a case study About how you'd need to downshift 400-500m beforehand the M-turn 1 Admittedly, you are probably going to know more about what happened when I did Because I'm recording this before free practice 1 So if you have indeed watched Fp1 or even Fp2 Do let me know how it went So comment down below either the word few if it wasn't so bad or mummamiya If it was really bad And if you think mummamiya is a bit on the nose, well come on, we're in Italy And you know, when in Rome or more accurately in Milan But back to more of what Piaestry said Here gave speedcafe the reason for that bizarre speed comparison In his words, quote, we just don't have the energy to spend, end quote, the problem It once again concerns the usable electrical deployment across the whole lap Monza of course known for its long straight It always asks for acceleration with a few smattering breaking zones in between for good measure heavy ones too Think of it like a power bank that refills under breaking

Monza keeps demanding maximum charge from this thing Giving it very little time to recharge before it then has to go again It still has energy but it can't provide all of the energy that the actual device needs every single time it goes down every single straight It has a limit That's the monster problem right there The car can spend all of its energy reserves now or it has to limit it to later on in a lap Where it can then maybe go on to attack a little more as in, you know, actually provide you battery when you need it So just simply learn often with this thing perhaps And the Australian also described the other end of the compromise because if you had higher harvesting limits that could produce much harsher clipping As in you would have even lower top speed around the temple of speed it just sounds wrong He was giving about 30 to 40 kilometres an hour speed loss if we had the higher harvesting measure Which is why the FIA just recently amounts that the harvesting amount for qualifying would only be five mega joules

It will be different for the race but that is the lowest amount we've seen all season And whilst that's not as bad as what we saw around Melbourne I recalled seeing speed drops of around 50 to 60 kilometres an hour I can imagine that the loss of speed around monster will sting that little bit more than it did around our park In any case this was Oscar's warning about the alternative but this also leads to something else The slipstream effect could be a lightsaber and of course it's always reduced drag The following car needs less force to reach the same speed But lower drag can also reduce the electrical energy needed to accelerate In short a toe becomes a shelter for all kinds of batteries Cadillac's Sergio Perez telling the race recently that a slipstream around spa for example was worth roughly one and a half to two seconds And he expects monster to provide even bigger advantages in terms of time saved He also warned that half a percent too much throttle in one corner could cost several tents in another corner later on That delay changes the driver's calculation not a good sign for quality then

And as we've heard from both Kimi and Tanele and Shala Claire They are preparing themselves for when it comes time in Q3 That they will be helping out their teammates in providing them a toe In the case of the Claire it's saying that Ferrari would provide priority to Lewis Because you know championship status and all of that And with Tanele it's a case of him well starting from the back of course So you may as well help out Georgian at particular situation The person who is most likely from the Saudis to go on to maybe get a podium or win the Grand Prix That all meaning that George and Lewis can protect as much energy as possible when going down a particular straight Because the moment they pull out of that toe they would start to feel the drag And that would then have an impact on the battery This is Italian Grand Prix could probably produce a ridiculous amount of overtakes But the problem would then rise in the fact that Would any of them really stick because that's what people care about An overtake happening and therefore it sticks instead of just yo-yoing around and all But if you're worried Aston Martin's Mike Crack produced a more cheerful take on all that

He too thinks Monza could produce an overtaking record And look quote like Motogp and quote Now that sounds fabulous at first glance since Monza should be noisy and a little unruly But then racing bulls of a limb lad brought us back down to earth when he told reporters That he had just completed what he called his most confusing simulator session of the year His simulated opening laps allowed him to spend energy and pass three cars in one go Recovery then left invulnerable enough to lose all of those places again Him calling it quote Really bad yo-yo racing end quote And to me that's the weekend's most damaging warning This could leave us with a Melbourne-esque situation where for those first few laps We were left a gogg with the amount of overtakes that we were witnessing Before it did eventually calm down and the driver started to learn what was going on But yeah those opening laps around our part they were chaotic And we could expect something similar around Monza this weekend

You know when drivers overtook when they didn't intend to overtake Or they weren't as clear cut as we thought they were As though the Miami tweaks and additional compromises that we got never happened We could really see that all the drivers and all the teams have been bracing themselves from Monza And now it's right upon us I'm not gonna lie I'm slightly scared Because yeah all of that overtaking might entertain us But another entertaining factor is the fact that we would have witnessed a really strong overtaking maneuver That had a proper impact on the race itself as in one star drive overtakes another star drive And that could have a major consequence for the championship As in it was a real sign of momentum shifting in another direction It had meaning This time around though it would be a case of Stefano Diminicale and Ezefo M Lackeys go Oh big numbers Entertaining things on entertaining but they're not so entertaining when the same thing happens around 30-40 times within a few minutes

Then Alex Album from Williams said that Friday practice could provide almost fake racing sessions As in it wouldn't be the fabled extended test sessions that Williams had been doing almost left right and centre But it would almost be using those two hours, one of three hours of you include up E3 To go through potential situations they might find themselves in for the Grand Prix Instead of doing their typical Friday program You know rehearsing rather than racing And you've seen the session by now I now remind you to either comment few or mama mere based on your own gut reaction Anyway you start with one pair of cars and follow them beyond the first pass Should you see a quick reversal that might suggest the electrical advantage shifted between them Then look at acceleration near the end of the straight Repeated flattening of speed or deceleration across several teams or even a downshift like Max Warned Would make the energy explanation harder to dismiss Although it might not necessarily give every single team's game away The timing screen will also need plenty of foam of doubt too

Because deployment laps on fuel loads they would muddy the waters in terms of who exactly is doing what Because we could have drivers doing completely different strategies And that would also then compromise the overtake authenticity as well And that might mean according to Asa's Micrack that nobody will want to go and run first And that could lead in the eyes of Chico to a situation where drivers spend their opening laps hunting around for a tow Be it from their teammate or any other driver within their own vicinity And that reminds me of Momsa 2019 And if you're new to Formula One, a short view back to the past That was the quality session where drivers slow down during their final Q3 preparation laps Because they wanted another car ahead of them And all that door deling was so bad that only charlie Claire and Carlos signs crossed the line in time to get a second flying lap in It was a joke and this year's energy incentive may increase the value of following another car even more So we could see a repeat or even a topping of what we saw in 2019

And remember, Q1 will also have 22 cars on track So we'll have slow preparation laps and different deployment choices They could create large closing speeds there And neither will see traffic paradise or well it doesn't bear thinking about really a crash But maybe that might not happen if all of the teams take the three hours before qualifying into account and take it seriously And think of every single scenario that is under the sun And considering that there is a heat hazard going on around Momsa, the sun there's plenty of it So we are just going to have to hope that all the teams are sensible and mature enough to anticipate any sort of a scenario Because the desire for a tow, it could lead us to asking yet another safety question Like we were asking the FIA and Formula One back around Zazuka Now of course, the simulated runs that Piaestry at our experience leading up to the Italian Grand Prix for the last few months or even years That could provide them information but not even the best simulators out there could think of every single thing that could occur during an active Formula One session

You're just going to have to get out there and give it a go And if they do do that by the time we get to Q1, we'll have all the deployment laps converging and everyone doing the same thing and not re-tripping up over each other But that first practice session or the second practice, that could be very very illuminating And again, I encourage you to tell me how it went down because as of now past law, I ain't got a clue And if it did look normal, the regulations would then have just about passed their clearest public test so far Although the rest of the weekend would still be up to debate There is Sunday traffic to consider and that could wind up asking an even harder question for us and the teams to mull over But if it makes you feel any better, at least we wouldn't have to worry about the OG 2026 regulations Because if we got those around Monza, the loss of speed couldn't have been even more obvious Because remember back in April, the FIA announced several changes based on data from the season's first three events in time for the Miami Grand Prix And even though we were sad to have a one month break, no racing throughout April at all, no buck rain, no jettah

Although buck rains come back from Malaysia, somehow I don't know why that works or whatever It allowed the teams, the governing body plenty of time away from the crowds and us calling for blood to figure out what the hell are they going to do with these cars? What the hell are they going to do with these regulations? Well, they did something for Miami and it did look kind of normal And the rest of the season has been kind of normal, safer, some super clipping and reduction of speed But far less than what we saw in the first few rounds And it's probably for the best that we didn't go racing around jettah, you know, the Cornish circuit and super clipping, closing speed around there, so many blind spots, that could have been horrific Either way, for the first US race onwards, the aim was to reduce excessive harvesting and encourage more flat out racing And the mega-jule amount wouldn't be set, it would go up and down depending on the circuit Like here in Monza, it's now only five mega-jules There goes FOM's tidy regulation set, it has to change every single time we go racing

And also, race boost was capped to limit sudden performance differences, as well as of course, again, closing speeds, while retaining overtaking opportunities And whilst nobody at F1 will admit that these tweaks were a sign that the formula failed, the fact that it happened so early into the year I think that's followed on a proof to at least think that I know that the officials had to swallow that bitter pill and recognise that there was an unwanted trade-off between safe speed differences, as well as deployment issues And Monza condenses all of that into four long straights So if it's a nice to say, and I'll get the spanner out for this next bit, formula one is probably sick to its back teeth with 2026 And that might explain why we're starting to see a lot of height building up for 2027 A fresh start, a brand new chapter, that maybe it won't be so bad, and we won't be talking about yo-yo racing and super clipping as much in the few months to come But that has also blown up another consideration too, and another controversy, and we haven't even gotten anywhere close to 2027

Yeah, this offered the back of the teams unanimously backing a plan to reduce most Grand Prix distances next year From around 305 kilometres to 290, most races except for Monaco losing about three laps or so, and yes, it still needs the approval of the F1 commission and the World Motorsport council But given the lack of dissenting votes from formula one teams, it almost likely passed, but the blowback, huh, it's been wild So allow me to clarify something here This reduction of laps for 2027 only, I believe, has got nothing to do with attention spans, it is more to do with a technical necessity Because as part of the changes for 2027 that were approved by the teams, there is going to be an increase in fuel flow with an added priority for the combustion engine Going back towards something we were more accustomed to before 2026, the ICE now the lead actor once again More combustion power will reduce energy starvation, and it's the exact thing that people wanted, but it does come with a bit of a compromise in that an increase in fuel flow means that you'll be gobbling up more fuel

And they'll also be the consideration to take into account the teams that if you want to have the same amount of laps that would also require a very extensive and expensive increase in the fuel tank and a change in the chassis All of that stuff in such a short space of time, many of the teams probably wouldn't be able to do it, and that in turn would create a discrepancy, a differential from the top teams and the smaller teams We can't be having that now can we? Because all the teams have designed their fuel tanks and chassis around the 2026 regulations, so by just reducing the amount of laps for one year, it's a very cost effective way of doing things and gives teams time to be able to adapt to the regulations and change things for the chassis in time for 2028 So I can easily imagine that the number of laps for 2028 will go back to what it was this year, it's only temporary But despite that though, social media has absolutely gone off on one, blaming young audience members of Formula One for the fact that, oh they just can't hack watching a race for that long, three laps is too hard for them, boo!

They have really been riled up by Stefano Diminicale's words and comments recently regarding attention spans and the youth not caring about technical stuff Well, I must tell you, this change has got nothing to do with attention spans, I repeat, it is a technical necessity, and come on it's only three laps, get over yourselves Besides, I bet many of you have tuned out of a race before the three laps to go notification anyway, so what difference does it make really? And that brings us back, since we're speaking of 2027, to the teaser trailer itself, because seriously the timing is just so on point it's not even funny Yeah, I get it, Formula One management and liberty media promotion is part of its job Naturally, since Italy is hosting the event, it makes sense to showcase it around the time of the Italian Grand Prix But given all of the criticism and concern for the race itself regarding the regulations, it's so revealing to me that I instinctively want to say you can't go out dressed like that

Because the public sees a glamorous 2027 promise in the same new cycle, where teams and drivers are discussing shorter races because another technical change has created another compromise It gives off the sense that everyone involved with this sport knows that this year's regulations have caused a dumpster fire in terms of optics, and the best thing to do right now is start to just push it to one side for now Since many believe that Kimi Antonelli will walk the championship, and instead look to 2027, where we will probably have far less criticism hurled our way, and we can get back to some kind of normality So I must admit, if Lewis Hamilton does go and take his 8th Grand Prix victory, that probably will cheer things up the many people again But, you know, come on, if Kimi gets his first world title, so be it, good for him, in any case, next year should be a season with a lot less grievances and 2028 even more so Then one step closer toward then V8, and what makes me think that 2030 might happen after all, is that Audi, according to this report, and the words of their CEO, Garandonna, has openly admitted that, yeah, D6s and V8s, they are part of our future after all

Because the CEO claimed that wealthier customers of theirs still wanted petrol-powered cars, they could be down for a change in the regulations Audi after all But sadly, there is no room in their future for V10s after shame Now, none of this proves a planned distraction, but it sure is how it creates a convenient escape route to all the next shiny object But the fact remains is that the temple of speed shall refuse to let the current product rush out the door By the time you see this video, we probably might have the first answers come toward our attention So do let me know what happened, maybe it passed by without any incident whatsoever Yeah, and we and the teams just got wound up over a whole lot of nothing But Sunday traffic could throw up a brand new problem that none of the teams could have foreseen, and I dread to think what could happen during Q12 and 3 In the meantime, I'll be reading the comments to try and gauge what you think, as well as pointing you to this video over there, which I do believe you will enjoy I'll go and freshen myself up, I'll be right with you Thanks for listening to my ladder ramblings
