Joel, how's the snake doing? Did you see it this summer? I was about to say, I was about to say, there's been a sighting. The snake still exists. I'm, you know, all black snakes kind of look the same to me. So I don't, I have high confidence that this is the same snake. It's roughly in the same area in my backyard. I don't, this is, you know, snakes. I don't know. I don't think they're sharing territory. I don't know, but I'm pretty sure I was mowing the lawn and he was boking away from me. And I said, Frank the snake. He's there it is. Chillin is could be, you know, I took pictures. Maybe a, maybe we should try to we should put it on our page. Oh, yeah, for sure. Before I go into that, though, too little big two two notes of importance. We're really appreciative of it. It's been a lot of great feedback. Other than I learned something this summer, Joel, and maybe you are not aware of this. Maybe you are. Unitarians are still very real. I kind of thought they were done. I thought we got rid of that in

5:08like the 1800s. I kind of thought we the Unitarian phase. No, when we came to the conclusion that Isaac Newton was not a Christian because he's a Unitarian in his own words, we had a storm of, I mean, dozens of comments on different platforms everywhere jumping in. Letting us know very in in long arguing. I went to bed. I'd wake up. Of course, it's like daytime in America. So I go to bed in the evening and wake up in the morning and there will be like just people arguing for many, many, many, many hours about the the Trinity. After all those arguments from the Unitarians, I do want to say I have come to a conclusion which is I am more convinced now that the Unitarians are wrong in our Miss reading scripture than I ever had been. I was pretty sure they were wrong. But after all of their best cases to make that they are better Christians and I'm even more convinced they are off. So if you're a Unitarian and you were hoping for a switch there, you lost me even more. You were guys were terrible at arguing and so it has been fun studying them off over the summer. Christian or not. It's been a lot of fun and we've had really, really great

6:12feedback and lots of people have sent their ideas of people from so season two is getting wrapped up. I was getting like planned out. It's really in a good place and we have had so many great suggestions from Walt Disney Christopher Columbus. I mean a lot of people have been like, no, you've got to do this guy. Yeah. So John has, it's been 611 years since this sermon has been heard, spoken in English, right? This whole time it's been in the Czech language. There has been no English translation of it, at least that we've been able to find or identify or recognize it in any way. So this is

8:17cool to have again, once again, another revive thoughts debut of a sermon that previously was not accessible to English-speaking people. As a refresher, John hus, born in the year 1369. And now what is called the Czech Republic back then, it was Bohemia. So you'll hear me talking about Bohemia and the King of Bohemia and all that stuff. Again, today, imagine modern day Czech Republic. As we talked about in the first episode, his life wasn't very easy at the start. His parents were very poor. One of the reasons he was drawn into ministry in the first place was one that we've discussed on the show several times. One that affected a lot of people that we have on the show. And it's that priests were always well fed. You know, they had closed on their back. It was one of the professions you could go into that was relatively stable and that would provide your necessities and needs and in an era where that was not not a guarantee. But as he studied to become a priest,

9:18something changed along the way. As he studied the scriptures, his heart was transformed. And a genuine conversion to Christ was something that he would talk about. That conversion symptom on a path that would eventually change history. I don't I don't I think it's unfair to say it. I mean, it did change history. The path would end up with him being martyred. He was burned at the stake for his beliefs. And you know, sometime later, contribute towards this great reformation that that came across Europe. Many reformers that came after him pointed back to us as the one who inspired their own work. Now in this sermon, you're about to listen to the Wheat and the Tears. He gives a great explanation for why God allows these false teachers and the church, which is one of the major themes of his life. And in fact, in this sermon, he says, I'm going to give like a faithful chronicle of what happened here. And he mentions how people are being executed for the teaching that's going on. So it seems important to talk about, well, what was that? That caused

10:22that specific execution that he'll mention in the sermon. Janus really started preaching the year 1402. He has a very unique place to preach for that time period. It's a place to preach that was only 11 years old had been built in 1391. It was created to speak the Czech language of the people. And at that time, many of the sermons that were so all of the entire mass was in Latin. And Hus will advocate for switching to the common vernacular of the people. Wickliffe over in England is kind of pushing the idea of let's move it to English. And Hus is going to start moving it to Czech, but it won't happen until a couple of years after his death when the Husites realized they're no longer welcome in the Catholic church. They will switch it over to having their, you know, communion and stuff in Czech. But at the time, all of the sermons were being done pretty much in German, because German was such an important influence. And so the people weren't hearing their sermons in their own language. This was one of the first churches where they were giving the omelies in actually the language of Czech. So it was a really important place to the people.

11:25They had a capacity to sit of 3,000 people, which is crazy, because I feel like a 3,000 person church today is still a pretty impressive church. Let alone back then. Hus was, it's most famous preacher. I looked at the history of this church. It's called Bethlehem Chapel, but like in, you know, in like Czech instead of how we would say it. And it was ordered to be torn down in 1412 because of Hus' preaching. And the town basically just said, nah, like we're going to ignore your order. We don't want to, we like this place too much. And so they didn't tear it down. It's still standing in actually in the year 1997. So fast forward 500 plus years way outside of the story that we're telling today. And asked like a, some astronomer named an asteroid after, specifically after this church, he was a Czech astronomer. And he named it, the asteroid, you know, the Czech version of Bethlehem Chapel after this church. So as far as I know, this is the first time a asteroid was named after a speaker on this show. Although a crater

12:28on the moon is named after Jonathan Swift, and we did cover him, oh, many, to quote, you know, many moons ago as it were. One of the major influences on Hus during this period was the English translator Wickliffe. And Wickliffe, again, he worked on translating the Bible into English. And the Catholic Church did not like him for it. He was, he was made enemies with the Catholic Church and Hus didn't copy Wickliffe outright, but it's, it's clear that Wickliffe's work really encouraged and inspired him. It was a big influence on his life. Both Hus and his followers came to believe that scripture carried more weight than custom in that too long of the Catholic Church had let tradition dictate the life of the church and the people of Europe. Hus and Wickliffe represented some of the earliest pushback against the Catholic Church's structure and emphasis on tradition and the way that that power controlled the people. Hus worked at a university and there,

13:30he pushed for Czech people to hold more leading power than the Germans did. And that shift would eventually help steer the university in a distinctly hussite direction for years after his death. In the late 14th century and early 15th century, the popes of Italy had a complicated relationship with the King of Naples. And I know you may be thinking where are we going? This is old on a moment. At one point, the King of Naples got his support from the Pope. He was kind of the protector of, he, you know, the King of Naples got kind of put into power by the Pope so in reverse, the King decided to kind of be the protector of them for a bit. But during the time of unrest, the King of Naples started taking a bunch of people, states, and land from the Pope in Italy. Well, in 1411, there are two popes and there will, when the council that will get rid of Yonhuss, I think we'll lead to the third Pope. And one is called today, the anti-pop, which is basically like, we made the wrong Pope. We didn't know which Pope was right at the time. This Pope was the wrong one. And now he gets to name anti-pop. And I got to say, I am really God as a Protestant.

14:33I don't have to deal with all of this stuff. But the anti-pop decided to launch a crusade against the King of Naples to get his land back. But you got to launch a crusade against this king who used to be your protector. And now all this stuff is going on because also the King of Naples supported the other Pope. So the other Pope who won, he got, anyway, the anti-pop needs money. And so he starts selling indulgences across the land, including Bohemia. And Bohemia is all about it because the king gets in on this. He gets to get some of that money too. So forgiveness is for sale. The very same thing Martin Luther will get in trouble with in the church. That leads to the end, the Reformation 100 years from now. And doldgen selling is the same thing that Yonhuss is going to get in trouble with too. The king wants everyone to sell these indulgences and everyone's kind of supporting it. Except for Yonhuss who starts preaching very fiery sermons. This is completely awful. Forgiveness is free from Christ. It's never from sale. The idea that you can

15:34sell people into heaven is simmony at the very least. If not just a bunch of other things. He is railing against it. And the people of Prague are on his side. They're saying, yeah. What they're doing is wrong. The church is out of line here. And it gets pretty crazy. Threemen basically go public. They're not doing it with Yonhuss. But the three supporters of him, they go to the public square. They'd announce the indulgences. They burn the papal bull statements that were saying you can buy indulgences as a gift forgiveness. They say, look, we follow Huss. And we will not follow the Pope in the church because it's wrong right now. He had three men arrested and then beheaded for defying both the church and the state. And he also banned the teachings of Wycliffe, blaming them for stirring up the unrest.

17:40And the university that Eckenhuss taught at him was a part at. They kind of just ignored all of this. And they kept teaching what they had always been teaching there in kind of defiance of this king of Bohemians decree. The king then made a political move, convening a council of church leaders without inviting us. And their goal was to find a way to soften Wycliffe's teachings enough to satisfy the church without fully rejecting them. So it sounds like to me he was trying to play somewhat of an intermediary broker. Like he wants to keep the church happy because he's getting paid by them, the Catholic church. But he also doesn't want to have to arrest and be head all of his own people in Bohemia. I think you're being generous to him. Maybe that's a bit of what he's doing. I feel like he's he's playing politics basically. I got the impression it was more in this we're looking at the same notes here. But I get the impression it was more like how can I get you on my side? What do I need to give you to make you happy enough to not you know like it's kind

18:43of grease in the wheel. You know your classic like slimy politics that everyone doesn't like. It's kind of like how do I and he got all these people without us there. Maybe maybe you want to be the next leader of Prague. You know, well, us isn't here. Let's get this kind of dealt with. And maybe we can kind of push him aside. So not so much not so much that he didn't want to have to arrest and kill everybody more so that he wanted to try to turn them into political influences for him. Is what your that's at least kind of what I'm thinking. But you might you might be correct. You might have been that he saw it was unpopular to execute people. And maybe it was the backlash of that. But I got the the more slimy politician by from yeah, you know, honestly, you're probably probably right. That checks out. So so in any respect, the king and this council of religious leaders that he got together, they put together some new terms and tried to try to get us to accept them. And a house was not about any of that. There's a quote from a me says, even if I should stand before the stake, which has been prepared for me, I would never accept the recommendations of the theological

19:47faculty. In quote, the church tried again later and they asked the Husseites to kind of sign the statement affirming that the church was to be abaid in all things. And the Husseites looked over it and they added a specific clause. They wrote in and you know, they didn't change you. Much there's going to add this at dendum that says so far as every pious Christian is bound. Just that one line and the Catholic church was not having that they they were not okay with that. And it broke off negotiations with that. The Catholics didn't accept it. The Husseites didn't accept it and they were exiled and resolved. So first Husse continued to preach at Bethlehem Chapel kind of like, well, you know, you signed your exiles, your paperwork, but what can you do about it situation? But eventually all of the church churches in Prague were going to be put under condemnation. The whole church and the whole city was going to be in rebellion. It was causing such a consternation that in an effort to save and protect the city from future consequences, Hus

20:51decided to leave the city and move out to the countryside. So he goes out for a time. He's going to be preaching in quite literally the most rural places you can. He's going to be preaching in barns. He's going to be preaching in fields. They had like secret gathering spots in forests where they could preach out of the way where nobody would find them. It really reminds me of the Puritans and that late 1600s of England. And you know what? It probably reminds us of underground churches all over the world ever since. But they're having to meet. That's where a Husse and his people are meeting just way outside of Prague where they once stood in the capital of Bohemia where they once were these important people. Now they're meeting out in barns preaching the gospel there because that's the only place they can. But the Catholic church wasn't able to catch them and because he was still alive, his writings and his works were continuing to spread like fire through Bohemia. It didn't work. Their plan to shut him down had not worked. And that was when they're going to invite him to come to the council. They promise his safety. Everyone tells him don't go. And as we

21:54cover in the last episode, he does. And he does get tied to that stake and burned. And just like he's kind of he foreshadowed it. The stake prepared for me. He said that in 1412, three years later, he will be bound to a stake and he will be killed. A martyr for just basic things like Jesus is the only forgiveness. And you can't buy indulgences out of your way. And just those kinds of things. What things that we as Christians today just take for granted that it's just basic knowledge. Back then, it got you killed to say that. The sermons that we've been reviving for this period are it's amazing that they were preserved. But they were preserved in check. It is for 600 years by his followers, but it is an honor that we have been able to bring these to you in English. This is sermon number two. We hope you enjoy. It's a really good one.

22:58The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while people were sleeping as enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. When the plans came up and formed grain and the weeds also appeared. The sermons of the owner came and said to him, Master, didn't you sow good seed in your field? So where did these weeds come from? He said to them, an enemy has done this. The sermons said to him, Do you want us to go and pull them up? But he said no because while you are pulling the weeds you might root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest and at harvest time I will say to the reapers. First, gather the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned but gather the wheat into my barn. Matthew 13 verses 24 to 30. When our merciful Savior had finished His teaching His disciples did not understand it. His Matthew tells us, It came to him and said explain to us a parable of the

24:03weeds in the field. Any answer that said the one who sowed good seed is the Son of Man. The field is a world. The good seed are the sons of the kingdom and the weeds are the sons of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is a devil. The harvest is the end of the world and the reapers are his angels. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire so will it be at the end of the world. The Son of Man will send out his angels and then will gather out of his kingdom everything that causes people to stumble. And those who do evil and it will throw them into the fire if furnace. In that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. Christ Himself explained His own words and no one can improve on His explanation. So even if there were no other commentary of believing soul understanding this would have enough to meditate on and to wake carefully. That is why Christ said just before this reading in Matthew 13 verse 9, whoever has ears to hear

25:07let Him hear. But because Christ did not hear, explain what the kingdom of heaven means. You must know this. In this parable the kingdom of heaven means Christ Himself. Because He says the one who sowed the good seed is the son of man. And at the beginning of the reading it says the kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in this field. He is speaking about himself in this parable. So He is the one who has sowed good seed in the world for He created every good thing. He created Adam and Eve without sin. But then the enemy came and sowed in them the wheat of disobedience. Now first of all, unbelief. Priests did not believe God that she would die if she ate from the forbidden tray. So she spoke down in God's word. Maybe we would die. Because of that when Christ says that the devil sowed the sons of evil, understand this not that the devil created them. But that by His tempteen He made them into children of evil,

26:12sawing into them unbeliefers and every kind of sin. He made them into weeds. Now to prepare you for what follows. Since His reading and many others often mention the kingdom of heaven. And in one reading it means one thing and in another something else, you must understand a scripture uses his phrase. First, the kingdom of heaven is the words themselves suggest means the assembly of the saints who were in heaven with God. Over whom God is king, being with them, they enjoy heavenly riches, that is a joy dev and knowing Him. This is how people usually understand the kingdom when they hear the words and that is a sense in the prayer and Matthew 6, verse 10. When we say your kingdom come that is, let the number of the evil act or to be with you in heaven be broad to fullness. Likewise, when a man who is sitting at table with Christ said in Luke 14, verse 15, bless as a one who will eat bread and the kingdom of God. He meant blessed as a one who after death

27:13will be satisfied in heaven. Second, in scripture, the kingdom of heaven can mean Christ himself. As in Luke 17, verses 20 and 21, when Jesus was asked by the experts in the law when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, said, look, the kingdom of God is among you. The commentary says, here, the kingdom of God is Christ himself. As if he were saying you were asking when people will be in the kingdom of heaven. Look, I am among you. I am the one who will give the kingdom to my faithful ones, and yet you do not recognize me. Third, the kingdom of heaven, here, means a church. That is the Christian assembly. As in at other passage, Matthew 13, verse 41, the Son of Man will send out his angels, and it will gather out of his kingdom everything that causes people to stumble. On this word, Gregory, de Great says, so we must understand that often in Holy Scripture,

28:14the kingdom of heaven in the present time means a church. Of this kingdom, the Lord says elsewhere, the Son of Man will send out his angels, and it will gather out of his kingdom everything that causes people to stumble. For in that final kingdom of blessedness were supreme peace reigns. No stumbling blocks will be found that would have to be removed. Fourth, the kingdom of heaven can mean the place of the saints in heaven. As in Matthew 21, with the mother of the sons of the Zebedee ask Christ, say that if these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand, and one at your left, and your kingdom, here you see the kingdom of Christ means a place where he sits with his saints. Fifth, the kingdom of heaven can mean Holy Scripture. As in Matthew 21, verse 43, where Christ says to the priests and experts in the law, the kingdom of heaven will be taken away from you. That is the Scripture of the law, and given to a people who will produce his fruit, that is to the good Christians who rightly use

29:18Scripture. And in Matthew 23, verse 13, Christ says, whoa to you teachers and experts in the law. You hypocrites, you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. You do not enter yourself and you stop those who are trying to enter. What does it mean that they shut the kingdom of heaven in front of people? John Christ says, Scripture is what shows the kingdom of heaven. The gates of that kingdom are peoples understanding. And those teachers, experts in the law and hypocrites shut those gates and peoples' faces. They prevent simple people from understanding Scripture, and they themselves do not enter into Scripture with true understanding. That is why they hate to see lay people knowing Scripture. They keep them from it, just as Christ says here. They do not allow them to enter. That is they do not want them to read. And so they do not want them to understand, especially because they do not want people to understand how they themselves ought to live.

30:22Second, because they do not want their sins to be rebugged. Third, so that people will not recognize their errors and preaching as see the Deity's study more diligently. And fourth, because they feared that might then seem less important and less honored than the eyes of the laity. But Christ has given them a fitting blessing for this saying, Whoa to you. And when Christ says, Whoa, He is pointing to mortal sin that leads to eternal condemnation, for Whoa to anyone who ends up there. Even today many doctors, teachers, priests, experts in the law and hypocrites, so they have the keys to the kingdom, refused to open it to others and even hinder them from entering. So Christ greets them and look at 1152, Whoa to you, experts in the law. You have taken away the key of knowledge. That is of Scripture. You yourselves did not enter in you hinder those who were entering.

31:23See these words, Christ, explain as early as saying that when He has said, you shut the kingdom of heaven. He now says you have taken away the key. That is, you close Scripture by taking away understanding. And who are many like this now? They know Scripture yet refuse to live according to it, or to teach others by it. And if someone does want to teach, they hinder him. Remember this, if you want to understand Christ's words, wherever you read about the kingdom of heaven, or else you will misunderstand. Now this reading says the kingdom of heaven is like a man who so goodseed in his field. That is Christ, the Son of Man. It is like a man who so goodseed like a farmer who has own weed in his field. The farmer so's weed in his field, the Son of Man, Christ, so's good people in his church. For the field means the world as Christ explains, and the world means a human race, the gathering of people as in John 1, 1, 10. The world did not

32:28know him. That is the assembly of evil people did not know Christ but drew faith. To see this word of God, to faith, which is a good seed because it makes people into the sons of God. Christ has own that seed in the field of the Holy Church so the people who were at first like good soil. For they were created by God without sin, though later corrupted by sin and the soil full of thorns and thistles, are now by the grace of Christ and through faith. That seed made into children of God. And so Christ has a good seed. These are the sons of the kingdom. That is, dear my sons, those who belong to me into salvation by faith and love. And while people were sleeping, that is when the bishops and priests were lazy and fell to keep watch over Christ filled as a gust and says. And also when other people slept, that is when they did not care about their own salvation. His enemy came. Christ says, this enemy is a devil who upfront a creation of humanity out

33:35of envy has always been mankind's enemy. This enemy, the devil, whom Christ calls a man first soed weeds when into that pure soil, Adam and Eve, who had been taught to faith by God, he cast a lie. As we read in Genesis 3, verse 4, he said, they would not die. And he did this cleverly, he began with a woman. When Adam was not with her, just as evil men do today when the husband is not with a wife. He questioned her so he could see whether she was inclined to consent. Here in her answer, she said, maybe we would die. He had once as the first liar spoke not to truth but a lie against Christ's truth and said, he will certainly not die. And he sold the weeds as the reading says and went away. Bage says that often the ancient enemy, one is already not a man down by temptation, with draws for a time. Not that he means to stop its wickedness, but so that he can return later

34:40and tempt him more easily. Sometimes have a drawn person in a sin and now counting him as this safely in his power, like a fisherman, with a fish in his trap or on his hook. He goes looking for another. At other times he tempts a man and fell and over come into one, it goes away in order to strike him more easily later when the man fails to keep watch. It's this reading says while people were sleepy. That is not guarding themselves. He comes in so's weeds. When the plants came up and formed grain and the weeds also appeared. That is when a faith already corrupted by the devil's rings up and bears it fruit. Outward works at in themselves look good. When someone fasts, give alms, praise, and yet knowingly remains in mortal sin. The servants of the owner came, that his succincts of old and the faithful believers now, coming with deep concern. They see how many weeds a devil has gathered among the wheat, and they say, astonished, master.

35:45Didn't you so good seed in your field? So where does it get these weeds? That is such a quantity in power of weeds. And they go on, you want us to go and pull them up. Today's bishops claim to dissent strongly, but because they do not know how to distinguish between weeds and wheat, they end up doing more harm to the wheat than to the weeds. They attack truth more than falsehood. They call truth a lie and a lie truth, so that Isaiah's prophecy in chapter 5 verse 20 is fulfilled in them. Woe to those who call evil good and good evil. Other blind guys say it does no harm, but it's good to destroy many good people along with one evil person. I've heard them say this, any give examples. Defer once boiled, herring, they will destroy the whole barrel. That is someone will throw away many good ones. In a fun piece of cloth as ripped, they will burn the whole sack. And they have openly acted on this. And they have openly acted on this. They went to

36:52Pope John 23 and obtained a bowl by which he commanded clearly to both of bad and the good books. A master John Wickliffe must be burned. They are greatly angered that those books speak about their bribery, pride, fornication and greed. Most of all they rage because he calls them receivers of ons and says that they should not rule like secular lords. And also because he writes that when priests live wickedly, and will not give up their evil secular lords, by lawful order and good attention, so the priests of nothing to sin with may take away their property and also withhold ties from them. These statements some doctors together with cannons, parish priests, and monks, and pray. Condemn was scorned in a language of German at their town hall. But many masters, in fact almost the larger part of them, and whole body of bachelor's and students would not join in a condemnation. Instead of masters met publicly in the college and prove from scripture that

37:55those doctors and their party had condemned the truth. They summoned those doctors to the school to prove their condemnation from scripture. But the doctors refused or rather did not dare. Because they had no scripture by which they could defend what they had condemned. The main instigator of all this was Steppen Pollack. That doctor who, when he still loved the truth, had been my loyal and dear friend and the other was Stonisloth, they stirred it up because we would not agree to the people boldly gave to cross, that is authority. And to all who was priests, nuns, and monks to prepare themselves to destroy King Lotterfluss of Naples, and all who were under his power and stood with him. In that bold, a pope condemned him to the force generation and many other terrible things. Any promise forgiveness is sent from punishments that those who would aid or pay money for it. But a merciful Savior gave understanding to many masters, priests, and lay

38:56people so that they did not agree to this for many reasons. Some even lay down their very next for it. They preached against these false teachers, they said that the pope as a god on earth and can forgive forgiveness of sins and punishments to whom whoever he wishes and any ought to fight with the iron sword like a secular king. Of those good men, Martin, John and Stasek were beheaded, and in God's name there were buried a Bethlehem Chapel. Others later were arrested, tortured, and imprisoned. I write this as a faithful chronicle, said if the same things happened to our descendants. They will know that others before them have bravely faced death for the same cause. And as fits are reading very well, the master forbade his servants to pull up the weeds left, thinking they were pulling up weeds. They pull up the weeds as well. For the reading says that he owner told them, do not pull up the weeds. Because while you pull up the weeds, you might

39:57uproot the wheat with them, let both grow together until the harvest. They do not do this. They do not leave both to grow, but they pull up the wheat and let the weeds grow. For the devil is almost everywhere, so-and-sellers of indulgences like weeds, and bishops and other priests fiercely defend those men, and doctors and others keep silent, not daring to open their mouths against such devil's weeds. Some people have fallen asleep. Some from lateness, others from fear, and others because they have been defeated by the devil's cleverness. Therefore the enemy has so many weeds among the wheat. The devil has also so-and-weets, especially because bishops and doctors today refuse to let the reading of Holy Scripture decide the truth. They want to judge by themselves alone. Just as the bishops, doctors, priests, and experts, and the long condemn Christ by false testimony. And so with her shameful decrease, a judging condemn faithful priests who preach against their bribery and other evils. They should

40:59know this, since the counsel of the Virgin Mary and of the whole heaven of kingdom is as, whatever he tells you, do it. In Jesus' as a Matthew 10, verses 7 and I, did they should exhort people not to store up gold and silver for themselves, to give freely a not to commit fornication. And now he says here that they shall let both grow until the harvest, so that they do not utter their foolishness, and some even out of malice destroyed the wheat along with the weeds. That is a good together with evil. For Christ himself who cannot or will on a day of judgment say to his angels, as a righteous judge, bind the weeds and the bundles. The wicked will have their hands and feet bound and will be thrown into the outer darkness. But the wheat, that is all the elect, will be gathered into the barn of heavenly joy. And now it says, just as weeds are in a certain way useful to the weed, because the bind of stocks together, so that they can stand more firmly against the wind and not

42:03be shaken as they would be if there were no weeds. And at the beginning the weeds look somewhat like the wheat, so that pulling them too early could harm the weed if you tug and crush the weed along with them. In the same way, when evil people are scattered sparsely among the good there and a certain way useful to the good, they help them toward a great reward and serve as exercise in spiritual warfare. If no evil person ever opposed a good person, then the good would have no temptation and no great battle. And so they would not have a great reward, but because evil people are given to the good as a test, so that by standing firm against their wickedness again a great reward, it would be a great loss for the good of all evil doers, if they were now removed at once. Therefore the highest lord and wisest master says, let both grow together until the harvest. Yet sometimes it is right for authorities to weed out the weeds. According to the counsel of God's word, do not according to all the churchmen's decrees.

43:07Sometimes they may do it, but only with great counsel from people wise and scripture. From God's grace and with great care so that they do not crush the weed or tear it off by the roots. To Peter, in Matthew 18, verse 17, to say we commanded a difficult sinner. After three warnings still will not repent, and his sin is openly known and he will not listen to the church, then Peter should treat him like a pig and an open sinner. That is, avoid him. But Christ did not command him to kill him, yet the present successors of Peter have tangled himself in executions, declaring a faithful Christian to be a heretic, to hand him over to be burned, making themselves just like the priests who handed over Jesus. 44:09this year. If you've ever gone through the letters of Paul, the false teacher comes up a lot throughout scripture as something to deal with. It is just constantly mentioned whether it's Jesus, who says they'll tell you come out here and you'll see me, but I'm not there, whether it's Peter warning it the entire second chapter of second Peter. It's all about false teachers. Paul warns about it, Jude warns about it, Revelation. I mean, this common theme of why false teachers are evil. And they have this this parable the wheat and the terrors and yet this sermon really changed the way I looked at it, especially this part of the end, where us is chronically the people that he knows that were executed for standing up against false teaching and how horrible it was. And by the way, this sermon was probably preached in that time period when he was in the Barnes and the fields. So this was freshly in his memory, only a year or so back. But he then he says, you know what, if there were no evil people to stand against good people, then the good people would have no great temptation and there would be no great battle. And so there would be no great reward.

45:14You the good people are given this test to see if they're going to be faithful to God against the false teachers. And if we try to get rid of the false teachers, we'd end up getting rid of good people. But when you give the wheat in the weeds time to grow, it becomes obvious who the wheat and the weeds are. And if somebody who looks at this world, who gets frustrated by the false teaching, you see all the social media amplifies it. You see it in life, you've met it maybe in people, and you wonder, God, why do we even allow this in the first place? That temptation that the Catholic Church had to get rid of all the false teaching that was leading to them getting rid of Jan Huss, it shows that you're hurting more good people when you try to just use force to get rid of it. Whereas at the same time, as time goes on, it becomes very clear who the real Christians are and who the fake ones are. Somebody who can sometimes be impatient wants to see change happen right away. It's encouraging that actually letting it play out is the right move. And not only that, but like Huss said, there would be no great battle and there would be no great reward. If we weren't up against false teachers, how could we show the clearness of God Christ and how

46:19much better it is than the false teaching? And what great reward would there be if everybody was obviously wrong? It's just such a beautiful thing and coming from a guy who had to live it out. I mean, this isn't coming from a guy who wrote it in a, you know, it would still be beautifully true statements if it was written in a safe library, you know, 100 years ago in a Christian country, but it's being written by a guy, spoken by a guy, to a congregation hiding out in a barn, hiding out in a forest. They're feeling the effects of false teaching far more than probably most of us ever will. And yet he's saying, this is good actually. God has a good plan for it. We need to appreciate what he's doing right now. That to me is powerful. I gave it to my students. So I apologize. You guys are not actually the first ones to see it. Some of my students, some of my class were and watching young people read this sermon and get what he was saying and discussions they had afterwards. It was really, really powerful. So if you have a young person in your life, this might be a great sermon for them to listen to and think about. It really, it really was, I really was really impressed with how much they were able to understand Huss's story and then appreciate what
