I'm much just getting you know look you're going to look up at us.

2:05I was sorry I was picking up some things off my desk. Just getting ready for analog season and looking forward archery season. I'm ready for fall to get here. I'm done with 100 degrees. Yeah yeah 100 percent. Yeah I'm supposed to go down to Kentucky for the early velvet season opener this weekend and they're calling for a 100 degree weather. And so I'm going to be in northern Kentucky so it's not as bad as where most of the guys that I'm chatting to chatting with are going to but I think I'm going to end up going down a little later. I'm going to go down on Sunday I believe on Sunday through Monday and then Barton bomb back up here and keep hunting PA. That's going to be terrible 100 degrees deer hunting. That's I need some colder weather. I mean I had to even just preserving the meat at that point would be a challenge like that's honestly that's probably my biggest concern like is it even worth going driving all the way down there and like you got to keep it close man 15 and under like there's no stretching it out because if you liver hit something and you know how you liver hit

3:08something and they end up dying within two hours but you but if you have a short liver no I'm sure 50 yards and in yeah yeah watch me drop that's so great. 4:09and say I'm hunting with this if that makes you go good no we can you can run with it that's fine all right so what do we kick it off with okay that's fine that's great I can't wait to see the bow of the show bow the show I hope you're not sitting with a boring hoi I am hunting with my boring point that'll be fun to look I don't need to do the bow of the show everyone knows the bow there's been so much content about my stupid bow let's see your black plain ass Jane 17 inch weight again no it's that's actually for it's actually four screen it's four screen I was it let's say it come on walk us through the setup all right someone out of the 300 videos you've made about your bow somebody else someone's gonna go oh my gosh that's the bow he's running that's incredible all right we got the uke vx pluses we've got the hoi 17 inch riser we've got a springy on there with the paired with the acutune on this side of this thing my setup isn't really good for sitting sitting down showing telling this thing we have a yager JD3 grip on this thing I have my gooey icky sticky dirty hockey tape

5:17that has been balled up in the throat but I've come to really like it I'm just used to it now so it is like what is that that's just for like sliding up yeah it's just hockey tape that was all the way down here but now it just it's slid all the way up so but I've come to like we're where it landed um running a Kaminsky 21 ounce bear bow weight the Kaminsky upgraded tillerbolts as well which I like a lot um super accurate tolerances on the tillerbolt for the forks of the ilf limbs coming through uh let's see what else we got a cellway quiver of course running cellways the hybrid version and then running the safari tough old school arrows in a 500 spine Cody little foreshadowing that's what we have to talk about I forgot about I'm glad you said that little foreshadowing and then we have uh I'm running three inch true flight four-fledged configuration

6:19in the 90 degree stock nox for safari tough stock 16 grain inserts and then a VPA 3 blade inch and an eighth cut 250 grains up front this arrow is 28 and a half inches from deepest part of the throat to end of carbon and I have just over yeah I've just over 29 is draw length but because I'm running such a deep crawl I'm able to run the shorter 500 and get it to tune oh that explains the yeah that is really short yeah yeah and then being able to aim off the tip of the broad head helps being able to make up any difference because if I was aiming off the base of the broad head or the insert then my crawl would be freaking even more massive than what it already is so your poundage is what on that 46 pounds at my draw length 46 pounds at 28 or 46 pounds 46 pounds at my so I actually attached the scale to the string at my crawl distance and then

7:22bring it back all right so that's it's 46 pounds at your crawl a 28 inch arrow with 250 grains up front total that's right and you're shooting at 500 spine yep when you hit the deer do they have like whip marks across their body or the arrow are there wealth there's no wealth no is it tuned it is dude so here's a part where we have to make a correction yes correction I want everybody that's listening to stop get out your baby book and write this down because I made a mistake you're gonna have to document this you broke the internet with a statement last last month you know what's bad because I was insecure about it and you knew I was and you wouldn't you wouldn't freaking talk to me about it but I got flooded me too with people me too that were like hey I'm worried because you said this and I'm like well show me your tune and they had perfect tunes see from my perspective people were reaching out to me and going Cody said this on your show what do you think about that is he lying is he does he know he's talking about that

8:27I wasn't lying I just I was not lying it was pure ignorance it wasn't it wasn't lies I can I can handle being ignorant so here's an example of the most extreme your yours is pretty extreme I really assumed up until this point on this text that I received from Dean Benner-Wice from three-reversarter you know Dean I know Dean hey you know have you met Dean I have met Dean he's a giant person he looks great he's a good person he he's shooting 30 and a half inches standard answer 175 grain head and he is shooting what did he say the poundage was 48 pounds out of that 30 inch and he's shooting 500s and and that's the most extreme example I've seen but I know Dean I know he knows how to tune I mean I've been shooting with Dean for a long time uh that can be I was convinced people were lying about their drawings I really was because people people men lie about three things the fuel mileage they get out of their people their penis size and the drawings and it's I'm not judging it's perfectly okay to lie about all three of those things

9:30that's on the table what happened in your life when you were what was wrong with you you don't know how many people were like oh I'm a 28 inch draw and you look at them you're like yeah but you're five three I'm not sure how that's possible right and and I never bring it up but we tune them through it but I just assumed a lot of these people were like that when Dean sent me this I'm like my god there must be some people with just a completely different uh release and form that that allows them to to shoot that week which is which is fine and good I had a lot of people reach out to me and I my standard answer was if you have a good tune you're good you don't have to worry I mean the proof is in in your tune for sure but that was an absolute mistake on my part there apparently a lot of people that can shoot 500 spine and uh in the 45 to as you can see here 48 pound uh space I don't know if they're shooting when I thought about what made me think like this and this is why I shouldn't share opinions and I should segregate opinions from fact when I'm talking but either people are running short arrows

10:33because I am so conditioned to 30 to 31 inch arrows that you develop this data set in your brain that you reference at Burberry's speed and you're like no that won't tune yes that will tune but sure enough if you tune that if you trim that down to 28 like you have there it's a completely different dynamic spine versus 500 you know what I mean yep but yeah Dean hit me with this 30 and a half inch draw and I'm like okay apparently form form definitely matters because he sees shooting bullet holes yeah I was after after a couple instances there's gonna be a video hitting the YouTube channel next week on my second doe of the year or at least my second shot at a doe of the year um I've just I've been completely rethinking my setup and you know I talked to Colton Gilman on the podcast we were just talking in general about he calls it having safety belt you know like driving around with a safety belt where you know if we're pushing the really low end of this mass weight on our arrows that there's just you know shot placements king at that point like

11:38there's really no room for error and you know I've you know me you know me I've been screaming it from the mountain tops to be shooting 680 700 grain arrows and uh in this year I'm just like on the far end of the spectrum and my shooting my actual accuracy is ridiculous like I cannot believe how much more accurate I am by shaving that weight off that that arrow which come obviously completely makes sense that's why all yeah makes our are shooting 200 feet per second plus um but I've just I don't have a ton of confidence and under this 500 mark so I've been like playing around with 400s with a lot more tip weight just to like see what I can get away with but I'm hesitant to make some changes here right now because during my initial like really rough tuning out at the 3E range I'm seeing that it's going to take a pretty big shake up to how the bow is set up to get a 400 to run

12:40and I'm just not like this is the thing is shooting so well right now with the setup like I'm just really hesitant to make any changes I got you and Kilton brings it up a good point but this you have to consider like if I only white tell 100 if I were only going to white tell hunt and my shots uh I know my shots are going to be for sure 20 yards and in like 98 percent and the majority of those are going to be 15 in it I would much rather have a 12 or 15 yard shot than a 18 and I would much rather have an 18 versus a 23 right so I know the distribution of my shots are going to be really really close and if I'm trying to get into 15 yards then I don't really need a fast arrow because I'm not there's not a lot of trajectory tradeoff right the moment you start saying I'm for some reason I tend to see deer at 21 and 23 yards the moment you start playing for me with those 21 to 23 yard ranges you start making extreme tradeoffs in trajectory 100 percent if you're hunting close and tight and you're you know you're within 15 to 18 yards and under all the

13:46time shoot a heavy arrow get it tuned perfectly there's no tradeoff yeah it's that simple and and Ashby will go back to Ashby and will actually quote him versus quote the three million people that have quoted his work actually has said and documented it's not just momentum you follow momentum and kinetic energy and when the kinetic energy starts to fall off you stop well that that moment of where it falls off depends on the energy stored in your bow and in your shot so a heavier bow is going to be able to go a heavier arrow and keep that optimal between kinetic energy and momentum we weren't supposed to talk about this but here we are so we will a lighter is a bigger challenge like if I'm going to shoot 41 pounds or 43 pounds I have to really pick my arrow and equipment carefully and I would argue that the bigger tradeoff to to lighter arrows is is the reliability of the arrow I'm not breaking whenever you're shooting them that's the struggle I'm having but if you want to find that without a bunch of fancy science if you want to

14:48find that sweet spot of where momentum and kinetic energy ride together and you quit adding weight as soon as that non-linear relationship and kinetic energy falls off it's really simple the old timers had it it's 10 to 12 grains per pound it's 10 to 12 I have one of the very first theories I tackled trad lab six years ago was 10 to 12 grains per pound because people used to quote it all the time it's kind of been lost but that rule of thumb is an absolute fact the sweet spot actually in a really efficient bow can go down to nine grains per pound you can go a little bit lighter and still have your kinetic energy and momentum kind of lining up it gives you a broader spectrum of those two correlating but as long as you stay within 10 to 12 grains per pound and you have a tuned arrow I don't I don't know that that there's any value in going over that if you want to go over that because you want a more durable arrow like I really like those old gold dips you know they just they don't break yeah the x-t yeah they just don't they just don't break

15:51so I love them and but they're extremely heavy so sometimes I'll show you the super heavy arrow I shot that double last year with a super heavy arrow um but there's no trade off if you're just white toe hunting in your clothes but if now you're going to go okay well I'm going to go mute I'm going to go andlo hunting in two weeks or in a week actually now we're talking about 27 yards we're talking about 30 yards and we're talking about the close shots that are 18 to 20 yards are over a water tank and a frontal so now I'm aiming at small things I don't want to do that with 50 pounds I can't hit a softball under pressure with 50 pounds after sitting in a blind for a week and that's heat you know so we all have to make these tradeoffs but to make one blanket statement that say hey you're riding close to this because you're on the light side what are the compromises that you're dealing with then let's make that decision if you're in oak stands all the time and you're up close and you're you're literally 18 yards and under 98% of the time which is me when I white toe hunt there's nothing wrong with a super heavy arrow

16:53yep the moment you step over that 18 yard line get into 20 there's a difference and then the Indian graveyard where all arrows fall in a non-linear way is that that 21 to 23 those things just start loping there's a reason why IBO3D plays that game out there where these things are really dropping right so those are the tradeoffs you have to make if you're going to see a buck and you need to know the difference between 21 yards and 23 yards I don't want that arrow because I can't assess I can't assess yard is that accurately that fast if I want an arrow that's going to be flat to the body of the animal I'm shooting in those ranges so I often tend to go to the 9 to 10 grains per pound side I don't go under I think that's really dangerous but as long as you're within that window and it you don't need fancy radar and all this stuff to calculate it way your arrow are you within 10 to 12 grains and that's a massive range by the way like the difference in trajectory of a 12 pound arrow and a 10 grain per pound arrow you're going to notice

17:53that at the 20 and 23 yards for sure but that's it's it's really that simple and we could end a lot of the there's a lot of concern around this and there really doesn't need to be like if you have to worry about ranging you better you need to go with a little flatter arrow if you're a normal white tall hunter and you're you're going to be 18 yards and under there's no harm in going heavy as long as that heavy arrow can recover within 10 yards right and a heavy arrow takes a little bit longer to recover just makes sense right but I think I think you're going to be fine if you if it's turned your broad head is sharp and you're within that 10 to 12 grains per pound the rest of it is what are you hitting right and and really more energy needs to be spent on what are you hitting but I probably went off on a rant on that but I don't want people right now they're all setting up their gear more people are going to shoot under deer or over deer or you know miss completely then they will shoot a deer and wound it more than likely I don't know that that's an opinion that's a

18:54face to my own yeah you're starting qualifying these now you all used to do a good job of saying when it's a penny you get used to coming on this podcast and just letting your mouth run and what happened last time happened my opinion is based on my personal history especially me old deer hunting when and animal hunting I'm much more likely to be under that animal or or wildly over it trying to estimate range quickly and because you know every time a me old deer moves it's three yard increments they bounce around so I need a flatter arrow there's no reason for me to go online and argue with someone and saying they're doing it wrong whenever they're hunting in a cedar thicket and they're shooting at 12 yards under yeah that's true yeah for sure yeah I completely agree like the trajectory difference like my old 19 to 23 is now my new 24 to 28 like it's it's wild to see how flat how you black yeah yeah I'm saying it's it's it's it's absolutely crazy but I think there's

19:54I think there's a happy medium for me though I think extra 50 grains would would go a lot I think a a spine jump and then you know roughly trying to add roughly about 50 to 75 grains like I would love to come in at that like 550 mark would be ideal and your audience is what 46 46 so you're gonna be what 11 grain you're gonna be somewhere right in the middle that range yeah I'm at 4 485 right now yeah so there's there's that's that's the sweet spot old old timers have been saying 10 to 12 grains per pound for 40 50 years right and there's no disproving it I tried to have a lab radar the first experiment I did was trying to disprove that and I went really really deep on it and it's as simple as 12 grain per pound and and you're set you can go 9 grain per pound on an efficient bow and I still have a remedy problems I personally shoot light bows to show people that you can right 41 pound bows I'll shoot them all day long and I just show people that you can I

20:54would be more comfortable shooting a 45 pound bow just because and 48 pound bow primarily because it's easier to find arrows that fall within that 10 grain per pound range that are a little bit more reliable I'm hunting with tie pans east and five pointos these lightweight arrows and they break a lot well they're not defective they're lightweight so the trade-off is yeah they're gonna break for sure and you know so that those are again just decisions you have to make but I don't think there's a right or wrong it's a scenario-based solution but most of our listeners you're gonna be white to honors and thick stuff and you just ask yourself like am I ever gonna need to shoot at 25 yards yeah so I or can you tell the difference between 23 and 25 yards right because if you can it's gonna be a problem yeah so before we get to your bow of the show let me just make a real quick announcement here we'll we'll announce this a few times throughout the show but check this out huh it is officially September and so this is the sales page for precision tuning for the

24:10wanted to choose something that is kind of a sleeper and and they really shouldn't be this is a two tracks long walker I don't know if you guys can see the the label there it's hard to keep me and this is the model this is his long walker long walk he also makes the echo that I own that's an ASL this you can see the bend of the curve here this is a very mild R&D long bow that he makes and I love I don't think mild R&D long bows get enough really enough attention everyone wants that kind of real steep curve that's aggressive to get the speed the advantage of these mild R&D long bows first of all they've been around you know since the 50s but they are they're super easy to tune they're very very stable they're very user friendly and they're they're just tanks right there's very little that can ever go wrong with it he makes a great bow both his echo ASL is a great ASL and this long bow or this long walker long bow is 64 inches and it's 45

25:12to 28 it's right in the sweet spot I bought it used this thing shoots great I really like bows where I can stand in front of paper and shoot 30 shots simulating a 300 round and get 30 perfect bullet holes and I can do that with most bowers that you see and see equipment actually every bower that I've tested that uses CNC equipment every bow I get from them will do that what's exciting to me is when someone produces a handmade bow that shoots with that type of precision and two tracks two tracks has done that twice for me on two different bows and that's a huge testament that's a great one for them and this wasn't like high on Cody from Tread Lab I need you to make a bow I found this on classifieds nice and I bought this bow and it turned out to be just an absolute gem and I probably if I get a chance I'll probably hunt with it this year I've hunted with it before I love it because it's a classic line in a crack it's he look JoJo beans is going nuts I got a close on my door now JoJo

26:13all right we're back we're back she's usually good she she usually just sleeps but you know someone came in the house and she got a little excited there she's making racket she just want to say hi yeah I did it's a bunch of stickers sticker packs for the pup that's a nice that's a nice bow two tracks that's that's a bow that doesn't that's a boy or that doesn't get a whole lot of get a whole lot of love now I don't I don't do a good enough job I've shared some of this videos on my story I need to do a better job of spreading the news because there are bowyers that are making bows by hand with extreme craftsmanship and I'll be honest because I'm I'm very hard we're getting ready to talk about a bowyer that's a disaster right but I I recognize that the hardest way to make a living with wood has to be making bows I mean the limbs have to be perfectly timed and literally one swipe of sandpaper changes tiller I mean that's how since of it is so these guys are trying to produce

27:14these bows as fast as they can while maintaining a certain level of quality some bowyers do a better job of it than others but I I recognize how difficult it is to produce perfection so whenever I find it I need to do a better job of showcasing that because that's a that's a gem yeah not going to find handmade bows that can do that that's awesome yeah I really like the exercise of shooting 30 arrows through paper in a row with your with your rig just to see how consistent and forgiving that actually is it's a great coach it's a great I a guy showed up yesterday he drove four hours to come here and get his help of his bows getting tinned and he came down here and he doesn't typically shoot the paper and I love doing this with people at the shows and because everyone says oh my arrow flight is good and you remember you and I experienced this in Pennsylvania we shot indoors we're like all that arrow looks good and we shot it through papers like a two-inch tear yeah yeah you see that in the module we went out back and he this guy could shoot to he's a great longbow shooter I think you

28:17starting to shoot competitively I mean he's holding groups 30 yards like this just beautiful and uh I go that looks like pretty good arrow flight I said that and we we come in here and of course he has a vertical tear that's three and a half inches it's amazing you can't pick that up with your eye it's amazing and I was even sitting behind him and high yeah at the right angle to watch the flight and you just can't pick it up but um we eventually got him dialed in but one of the bows that he was struggling with and we there's no need to go over the bow your name because it's the lesson I want to share versus the bow your name this bow your that I'm going to refer to I'm not going to give you the name has built bows that have won world championships there's no doubt my this person has built bows that have won multiple world championships and competed at IBO worlds many many many times this is a great this bow here has produced great bows this particular bow that this person was struggling with and I sent you a quick video of it oh I really had

29:18yeah I think it was I think there are pictures oh here we go oh my uh he said it was that that man said is that a video that that's how much due diligence you put into I sent you a video so we could probably play it here and you're like oh I can't see it do you want me to play it no yeah you don't want me to play it no not if we haven't prepped it it's right here right I could I could click play trick here go to play right okay here we go there's gonna be too much light in the background you will be able to see it probably go ahead can you see the waves in that room yeah that's that's a race you see that big curve at the very beginning yeah look at that look at that you see that and you see how angles to the right as well it's not just a dip yeah see how it vibes to the right wow okay that that wasn't sold as a second hand bow that wasn't sold as a blimish that was sold to a person at full retail and uh and that's just absolute it's it's terrible and so I'm hard on

30:18bowiers because we pay a lot of money for their bows and uh I know it's very difficult to build bows but whenever someone's struggling so much that they're willing to drive four hours to try to get their bowtune because it's driving them crazy and you see that type of craftsmanship it's a disservice to the shooters and all of these bowiers have pro staffers and people they pay or their friends that tell you they're great but there's no one that's a steward of the person that's packing their lunch for six months to afford a bow and they get it and it looks like that because that that was gonna be the the we got that thing to shoot a bullet hole but the window tune on that thing is just like super super narrow right and it took me playing with bottom knot tie ins to like support that arrow enough really the tiller bar and I asked the gentleman you know if he had known that and he goes yeah I said it and he said the bowier said it wouldn't matter I'm like well it it matters so it it doesn't matter who the bowier is what matters is when you're purchasing a bow

31:19you need to expect perfection and we've talked about how to inspect a bow of front you know making sure it's aligned and all of that stuff it's in I think it was three podcasts ago where we've covered that yeah but we we do a deep deep deep dive in precision tuning on yeah that on how to how to inspect your bow before you even start tuning you have to ask yourself is this bow tunable and they're there are unfortunately a lot of bows that aren't tunable and I don't that that mandro four and a half hours that's how much it was driving him crazy to help get his bow tun and that's how it affects us it's honors right so you need to know how to inspect your equipment and you need to hold your bowier accountable doesn't matter if you like him it doesn't matter if they're your friend and you need to expect customer service so that if you have something like that or you find something like that and you take it to them it's going to be resolved people get on to me because I talk about turkey winger and black widow endlessly I know almost every podcast I have dropped my bow out of my tree stand because I was testing a new bow holder that fell and hit

32:21every climbing stick I had all the way down scratched the cell fault I mean total fault of my own and in that example you send it back to black widow and they're like hey we fixed this no no charge and they don't do that because I'm trad lab they do that for everybody I've heard a story after story after story trick winger the same he's going to break his back for customer service right and and so so does Tolkien there's several others out there but when I recommend a bow I'm not just recommending are they building perfect bows do they have the customer service to deal whenever they do have an outlier because everybody's going to have an outlier right and and they do but that was a long way to say it was just heartbreaking to see a person that could have a shot and that worried about their tune to drive that long and you get here and it's like this limb is just twisted and curved yeah that's wild thank that's correct you want to know his name he's gonna be selling that bow saying that it's a bad grip doesn't I hate to do this I really love this bow but I love the grip just doesn't

39:48community why wouldn't we be shooting these arrows discount code the push for 15% off your entire order go check out their offerings at safari tough calm appreciate you guys now let's get back to the show yeah tip of the month go what I typically do where these are coming from they're coming from questions that I'm building and I look through them before Matt's podcast and I look for trends on what's common and what's hard to diagnose on your own so this is kind of a cheat because people that have the course they they have a lot of information that not every listener will have what I'm looking for people that are reviewing the course and still having problems finding solutions and that tells me what actual modules we need to add to the course not just random ad longbow modules and this is one that we needed to add because people that have taken the course and have gone through it have I've found three or four examples where they've missed these as problems and those problems are understanding the value of string groups in our limbs and what a string

40:53group does and and also understanding the value of this is going to be pertaining the back half of this conversation be pertaining to DOS or ILF the value of having a good mating surface there a lot of people to mitigate sound will purchase strings with mufflers on them like the mountain muffler or they'll put padding on their limbs and they'll like tuck it in they'll try to roll it into that little string groove and they're doing this to mitigate sound and they're doing this to mitigate string slap if you have string slap that's a problem that can be resolved most of the time I've shot a lot of recurves Matt has heard my recurves that are really really quiet okay shoot my recurves and they sound really really good you can tune string slap out most of the time if you can a better solution is to create a small little pad a bell crow that's below the string groove not in the string groove whenever you've heard us talk about in the past how that string moves in time when you let go of it of course we can't see it with a neck and eye but we know this occurs

41:57the string will go down and it'll make a kind of a half circle and turn that call the second come back the Koreans love stiff limbs because that the the width of that turn that the string makes gets narrower and narrower and narrow so you notice the Korean limbs are super super stiff and tight and it's because if you were to take like a green knock tie on or a serving and put it under a black light with a high speed camera this is what when it when did you can see that string and how it behaves and the stiffer limbs it's tighter those string grooves help collect that string down the center of your limb and and bring that into center and they play an important role they may have changed their policy but there are some bows I believe Bob Lee that you bored you void his warranty if you don't if you put something in those oh no kidding I didn't know that so that may be not true I believe I'm remembering that correctly but I may be not

42:58god it is not a please don't get on to me but they do serve a valuable purpose in that they're collecting that string and the more aggressive your limb is the more important that is meaning the more curve you have the more important that can be right and there are going to be some designs that are way more robust to that than others like Sam's limbs or something like that but for the most part you really want to stay away from putting padding up there where where your string is rolling into that to into that groove because you want to bring that string down the center when you add weight this is just from a performance perspective which is much less important but when you add weight to your limb tips you're adding weight to the worst place on your bow in terms of affecting performance like when you add limb tip protectors that are like big rubber heavy things or those big giant rubber stoppers that Randy loves to you no I know they weigh like three pounds each horrible

43:59idea horrible idea ask Randy about it you can always tell Randy has a horrible idea because he'll start a statement with well and then he'll say something horrible and if he starts with well you know it's a bad idea using those is a bad idea that's a crap you're much better off tuning that sound out and the majority of inequality recurve you can tune that out I have had somewhere I want to put a piece of oh my god the words the belt the soft side of velcro just a small little patch below it or to hit and vibrate on but for the most part nowadays I'm fine the mountain mufflers and things of things like that I'm not saying those strings are terrible I'm not saying they're horrible I am saying that they're they're going to be a little bit slower I'm not too worried about speed anymore I've learned over the years that speed's not that important but I do think that string has to track perfectly if the mountain muffler string because I already know this this is going to cause a bunch of chaos is not causing you tuning problems because that's how it'll

45:04show up it'll be this variance that you can't track then you're perfectly fine shooting that string and with having that in your pad but if you can't seem to get a bow tuned and you've stuffed some things up there try taking them out cleaning it off restring it and seeing how well it shoots because that could be a problem I'll repeat that I'm not saying that mountain muffler strings can't be tuned and I'm not saying that putting limb pads up there is a terrible idea and we'll make it where you can't tune I'm saying if you can't get a tune and you have those in place try removing them and see if that's what's causing your problems then the next piece that we didn't cover in the training that I see are people with ILF Matt you want to grab your bow with ILF limbs and where they get together and you'll see people trying to get rid of ILF noise by stuffing Velcro down in the ILF pocket and whenever you think about what you're doing here is you're creating variance as to how that limb interacts with that base and you really don't want

46:06to you really don't want to do that it's it's a minute thing that most of us can't shoot the difference but I've seen it cause tuning issues where you can tune the difference when I saw that a few years ago I gave that I had a conversation with Dean at three rivers and they're actually moving to a harder rubber in the dust to eliminate any type of movement like that I think that's coming out in their new lineup next that's that's harder and there's no movement whatsoever and it gives you a stir to your platform ILF is the same way if you stuff a bunch of Velcro in there you're creating variances that may show up in your tune if you have that in there now and you've got great tunes don't worry about it but if you're chasing variance those are sources for it that's the tuning tip of the month good good tuning tip of the month that's good yeah yeah I think you did yeah just adding things to the outer extremes of your system just can can do some funky things for

47:07you for sure now it's opposite interestingly enough on strings I can't remember that's Eastern engineers name he has a weird last name but he's extremely knowledgeable he's on all their podcasts but they did a study where if you add weight to the interview strings toward the center of your strings is a eight x multiplier in terms yeah eight x and so whenever you're playing with your silencer as you'll see if you move them down you're actually going to you're slowing yourself down for sure you don't want to move weight close to your the center of your string and that's why I don't like skinny strings because you always have to serve a bunch in the center and you kind of lose any type of advantage they have yeah they also they there are source of variance in themselves but that's for another show I had a podcast with Randy that's going to be launching probably after this one maybe but we were talking about tuning and getting like this he was just massaging his tune there and he moved his silencers he was getting a weak tear and so he just moved his silencers

48:08down towards the middle of a string a little bit more and just corrected it got bullet holes there just by slowing that string down a little bit and I'm my comment about Randy is in it's it's it's time in cheek I love Randy I have a lot of respect for him yeah he's he's a good friend I'm just joking with Randy when I say that but he does have a lot of ideas and he starts him with and there's those big rough did he still have the big rubber glove he did that's the only reason why I knew yeah yeah it is this is hard outside of that that's that's the best I can come up with now as we're as we're in this part of the season I can tell people are getting their gear ready and the next thing I'd like to talk it's not a tuning tip of the month really but it's there's a lot of confusion not because of our course this is just because of Facebook and social media there's still a lot of confusion despite our predecessors and monsters the bearbow masters of the bearbow and despite Tom clum despite everything that we put out like we're standing on the shoulders

49:09of giants here but there's still confusion as to what role each testing method plays and which one is more or less precise than the other and it's absolutely okay for people to have theories and tell they validate it but there's a lot of people that don't think that paper tuning is a good way to tune I personally think the greatest way to tune is to put a big broad head on your arrow and back up to 40 yards and shoot it compared to field points that's the most precise because I can get perfect bullet holes in paper back up to 40 yards with my broad head and it could be just a little bit off and I make a little refined adjustment right there and people go well I don't shoot at 40 yards no but the tune is off enough to affect the flight at 40 yards so our goal is to get these arrows to recover fast to me out of everything I've tested that's the most discriminant and precise way to test yeah the second most is paper tuning and the reason I like paper tuning is because I'm not a great bow shot I have target panic that

50:10would cripple Joe Turner he would he would start stuttering if he had my target panic and and I have to rely on my do you need a minute I have to rely on my own shooting at 40 yards to be like if I shoot a group that's a foot half big and the field points and the broad heads are within a foot I don't know if it's my shooting or if it's the tune so I lose precision through my own ability so paper tuning allows me to not worry about myself and my target panic isn't there but because I'm not trying to hit anything I'm focused entirely on form but you have to get out to 40 yards to really see that my issue with bear shaft tuning that is probably the most popular testing method in our community is at the exact same thing and I think people like it because it's a confidence booster because when you shoot in front of paper and you rip a tomahawk through there you don't feel great about yourself and I still do it I'll shoot a really good bow now I can take my PMA which I have shot 30 holds through paper worth a thousand times and on occasion I'll get a nine inch wild tear because I've just blown the shot

51:13and that's the last thing I think about before I shoot an animal it never never never never never never fails but what I want people to remember when you're shooting bear shaft at 20 yards it doesn't discriminate well enough so you'll people go I got a perfect bear shaft tune at 20 yards that makes you feel great but you can't see it has to be a massive signal you have to be wildly out of tune to see anything there you really need to back up to 30 and 35 yards and even 40 if you can and now once again you're relying on your ability to shoot to discriminate between those which brings me back to paper tuning because you know it kind of takes that area out but I never just paper tune I'll always do the broad head test at 30 or 40 yards the best if you don't have a paper tuner and you don't want to mess with that in my opinion is the walk back because you shoot you walk back you shoot at the exact same spot you look for them trilling off to the left or to the right a new person that's just getting started should forget about bear shaft they should get forget about paper they should do walk back tunes and try to get

52:15it as close to the middle as they possibly can put five inch feathers on there and go worry about other things but there's a lot of confusion and there's a lot of misguided theories that have been invalidated and we actually know what's best on social media that kind of throws people off and I wanted to make sure we covered that today as well yeah it's good yeah I feel like 40 yard broad head tuning is kind of like my go-to now it's my go-to it's my limit you know I like I go shoot a paper I don't have a paper set up here at the house but I you know at my home club we have a real nice paper tuner there so every time I'm over there I shoot a few holes through paper you know just checking and whatever but if I'm going to do some like deep tuning and whatnot like I'm shooting field tips and broadheads of 40 yards like that's the that's really what I'm looking for it's the most precise right it'll show I can shoot perfect bullet holes in paper go out there at 40 yards with a good broad head and and see a slight variance that I have to take care of like it's still slightly weaker stiff like okay I can I can take care of this and if you

53:19can do that at 40 yards you you've got yourself an absolute perfect tune yeah and there's a lot of people that will say and I think this is what creates confusion I'm like well I'm showing good paper tune or but whenever I bear shaft I'm showing a week signal and I got that this month and I asked the person send me pictures of your paper tune and it's not a perfect bullet hole it's just got you know it's a little knocked left that's weak and you need a perfect bullet hole so people will get online and say well paper tuning doesn't work it works you just you have to shoot for that perfect bullet hole but yeah when you're when you're a quarter inch knock left or right like sometimes just based on the tear or the type of paper you're using like sometimes it's hard to it kind of looks like a good hole you got to really be pretty discriminated about it I like the wax paper for that very reason you can kind of pull it back and I have lighting behind it there's a light matchfully there and you have to really pay attention to it but an eighth of an inch tear is a signal that you have to address I think people kind of forget that are they they get excited

54:23about something close to perfect and they often go okay I get a good tear yeah and don't get me wrong if you have a tear that's with an eighth or a quarter of an inch go and you can't get me better go kill deer yeah you're at the top you're in the top 80th percentile of him right go kill a bunch of deer you're fine but you can get it perfect but I just wanted to clarify that for folks because it's I think it creates anxiety that they don't need put your broad head on there back at the 40 look at what your signal is yep you can shoot enough you're good to go have you ever seen tunes that how do I want to word this have you ever seen shooting field tips and you might have like just a little kick going on something you can see with with your eye but then you put a broad head on and the broad heads interaction in the system actually corrects that I don't know that I've seen the opposite of that I don't know that I've ever seen that but I could believe that because if you tune with full field tips and you throw a longer broad head on

55:27it changes the dynamic tune because you can add it you can add an inch sometimes more with like a giant Simmons you're changing the dynamic tune right yeah that's what I'm getting at yeah if you're shooting us like a marginally various light stiff and you go to one of those big three to one broad heads or big Simmons I could see that correcting it that's why I always run the litmus test of put a broad head on there and see how it shoots but I could I could see that thick in place more than likely what I typically see is I get it perfect I put it on there and I see errors it doesn't resolve anything it's a magnifier but I can see that situation unfolds in front of me because I've I during the tuning process before Africa I actually had that occur to where I was shooting broad heads and field tips at 40 yards and I could see trajectory deviations with my field tips but my broad heads were absolute bullets the whole way there what do you say you could see you could see it in flight or you could see the impact I could see it in flight no kidding yeah they must because it's hard to see yeah it's hard to see yeah it's really it's to see huh that's

56:29interesting but I went I went down the route I went down the rabbit hole and ended up getting bullholes and then the broad heads were fine and stuff but I was like it that always kind of stuck in the back of my head going I wonder because I mean it it is changing the dynamic system you know it changing to a broad head was it it was a VPA three believe the one of the 200 grain is one of the big ones 250s yeah I could see that it's a long broad head you're gonna change the relationship for sure you know it's it's simple just go out there and try to broad heads pick one so you don't have to re-sharp it constantly and yeah let her really make sure that that's I guess since we're saying this we have to say spin your spin your arrows when you put a broad head on there spin your arrows yeah I need to venture those products there it's especially and I love Simmons and Zwicky's and all those but there it's often that you'll find a traditional broad head that won't spin and you've got it you know bend it a little bit but you've got to take the time to spin your arrows otherwise you're introducing a whole different variance and the longer that broad head is the more off-center

57:31it can be what's the technical term for off-center run out more run out you'll see yeah in that in that will definitely affect your flight yeah if you're not yeah if you don't have equipment and stuff like one piece of equipment that's super cheap is just get an arrow spinner I mean they make them dirty even even the inexpensive ones that don't spend super super like cleanly is still better than nothing or what I've done in the past is I actually spin it on a table or pull a drawer out and just roll it on the drawer you know just let it roll like on the on the side lips of the drawer and just it's that's a great way to test as well but yeah it's it's so important that like my process is once I have my tune and I know what I'm going to make my hunting arrows into and I cut all the carbon I then hot melt warm it up with a broad head on it put put the insert into the shaft and then while it's still warm I'm sitting there spin checking it rotating rotating rotating rotating until I have that thing spinning like a top and then I snapped that arrow with the

58:33knock with no fletchings onto my string and I orient it so my broad head blade is where I want it to and then I go and fletch fletch is the last step of my process yeah that's smart it's a and I have the fancy last chance archery thing that you put in there the t-bone came out with you don't need that you can you can just any spinner will do because you'll you'll see it and even on you know a glass table top or something like that you'll see it and you can solve it but I line it up with a dot spin it and I'll sit there and work on it until it's perfectly straight that causes not just flight problems but you know if you're if you have run out there and on impact your your chances of damaging it are much higher the one that I don't understand but I know it's important it's very important I can't explain it and I can't get my head around it is squaring the knock-end like you think the way that knock sets especially if it's sitting inside the the idea of the shaft I can't wrap my head around why if that's off it affects us do you know what I mean because the it should sit there but it does affect us you have to square the knock-end oh yeah I

59:37just I can't wrap my head around why that do you just do you just use sandpaper like on a spinner jig with the sandpaper and just roll it yeah yeah my spinner I ain't got it from a fire knock has a little square sanding platform that you can pump it up against and spin it yeah that's you get a perfectly flush but I don't understand why that is a variable I mean I understand that it is a variable but I can't wrap my head around because you think if it's sitting on the idea of the shaft that knock shouldn't be sitting like this it must be the dynamic it occurs under pressure yeah under yeah under under that load I'm guaranteeing there's some deflection going on in that because if you if you're end of your carbons like this and then you have this cylinder only it's only touching at a tangent point you know technically and so like there's got to be some knock deviation like that once it's under load it's crazy but it does it does affect and if you're shooting wood arrows it's a massive oh yeah it's the most important variable like do you've got to get those knocks spinning perfect yeah and you're cutting your tapers that is that is the most

1:02:50and uh but you also have moments like this guy behind me um I watched him all day long about 450 yards away like get up and check doves and run around all day long and like 15 minutes prior to sunset he comes in on a line straight to me and it's just a white note when you're staring at these monsters all day long you're like please and you know they'll start wandering to you and then like 300 yards away they drift off the side track they're just wandering around so it's fun in that sense but when you're not seeing anything and you can see for 12 miles and you see nothing the advantage of it for me is I have fun no matter what out there he has really good stance so if you're a traditional archer that's that's the place to go you can stand up and shoot a 66 inch bow in most of his stance which is nice he puts the work in he has good stance he has an amazing chef out there and that cooks really good food so it's it's always a good time and it usually comes

1:03:50at a time for me that I'm working so hard with a railroad I don't mind a few days of dead silence in a blind like I can I don't mind unplugging and just sitting there staring into grass waving in the wind for a couple of days it's good it's good for myself yeah but I'm very excited about that I was trying to play with this 56 inch recurve Danny talked me into getting and uh because you know Danny is walking around telling people that it shoots just as well as the 64 inch recurve or 66 inch long bow and I I want it to work and I'm gonna use it for white tell hunting but for analogue I need I think I need more precision so I'm it'll be between that the the new DOS and then delete that a DOS and the um I'm not deleting it you know you ride it you have to delete I'm not I'm not doing I'm not I'm not gonna remember you just got to you just got to text him and say hey man I slipped I slipped up what you have AI like making note now I don't

1:06:53I get this thing isn't it hot there yeah that's all right they live in it they got to move it just move it happens later you have to wear orange and put it away oh it's so it's here I hate wearing orange dude I hate it but yes for AgTag season all weapons are open so since there could potentially be rifles on people's properties that have AgTag seasons open like that's it these deer are getting a little spooky on this farm because this guy does have some rifle hunters pop out you know once a week and they do some banging and shoot a few animals and but they're just start they're giving me the run around the last two weeks it's just been a struggle granted the wind and the weather and everything hasn't been in the temperatures haven't been great so movement hasn't been bonkers or anything like that but I could tell that they are acting very pressured and I know it's not because of me it's definitely because these guys are out there banging around with some rifles every way do you see a difference in detectability with orange I mean not really but I just don't like

1:07:55wearing it I just don't like wearing it in the orange in the vest that I have because since I the time I only wear orange is usually colder out it's you know in that rifle I'm more it's a nice yes but it looked freaking hot dude yeah like I'm wearing like next to nothing like this brand new they just came out with it it's this new q utop that's super hyper thin and moisture wicking and super lightweight and I got a pair of their new pants as well their new lightweight early season pants and I love it I feel like so cool and breezy up there and breathable and then I have to put this stupid freaking vest on and I'm like my back is just soaking wet when I get it back to the truck it's like it's a nice looking vest because it's not exactly blaze it seems like they've matted it down a little bit yeah it's pretty nice but it looks like it'd be hot to hunting in the warm weather is tough but it's still hunting that's pretty strong that's right heavy hunting a good luck yet I just killed the one and then that video just launched this week and then next week I hit another one that I didn't recover and it was a ridiculous shot that I made

1:09:00and I'm still completely confused why that deer wasn't dead in 80 yards it's ridiculous what do you mean just what are y'all sending the video dude it's like it's an amazing shot I run my shot process she's standing there slightly quartering away at 17 yards and I mean from the footage it is just like dotted it be dotted her freaking dotted her she goes hauling off and I'm like flipping out in the stand it's almost going to be like borderline embarrassing to launch this video because I am like losing my mind because there was a ten yard and this is another thing about these super light arrows ten yards away from my stand maybe 13 yards away from my stand there was this big low hanging bow of a tree with tons of leaves on it and as I was standing I can only see the her hooves but the where my camera my primary camera arm is is about waist height you can see the whole deer and so I actually get down onto my heels on the stand and my butts it my butts on my heels and my butt is my lower back is leaning against the seat post on the stand

1:10:07and I draw all the way back so I'm down in a full squad on the stand and like the the camera arm is above my head you can see the top of my hat in the camera view but you can see the deer pass me come to full draw and I'm watching my lower half of my string to make sure it's not going to touch the platform and I get all the way back to full draw I'm like oh crap this is going to work it's not touching anything and I look up set my broader where it needs to go run my shot in that arrow arcs beautifully underneath that tree branch and just freaking smokes her and I lose it I lose I'm like that's the greatest shot of ever me I'm like going nuts I'm going nuts in the stand and stuff and then I'm like and I go home check the footage get the boys I get my two youngest ones and Jude with me and so all three of us go out there with the dog but while we were checking footage it just torrential downpored just the skies opened up so there's no blood in the ground we found a few specks and stuff but my dog ran the same loop twice I had to reset her and brought us to a neighboring properties cow pasture and so we ended up like after two hours

1:11:11working the dog I bagged her in the backpack and then we grid search for hours how this deer how this deer wasn't dead in 80 yards I've just it's still terrible still mind blown it's it's crazy in it what's what's crazier we go through something like that because it's frustrating and you'll read these stories and you did a good job I was waiting for it I was waiting and what typically you end with and now I'm switching to this brought it to KIA yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah the random probability they'll blame the poor broadhead structures take the worst they're the dammit dolls in the industry that's right well switching broadheads now yeah go on to something else exactly no it's things happen hopefully doesn't happen too often but those things definitely happen yeah just weird I think what happened is like just as you could see she's moving a little bit at the at the impact and I think just maybe she turned away a little bit and then it deflected off of something just right or something happened to where it just slipped up between the arm and the chest cavity or

1:12:13went into the chest cavity on a nice buck I I bounced it was quartering away bounced on the rib outside into the skin took all the horse power out and it was a heavy arrow it was a xx 75 out of orange and it's it's terrible those auto-mortures I love them because they're you know nostalgic to me they glow like during golden hour they just glow and Ryan my best friend he's 500 yards away I haven't told anybody that I just wrecked the shot right I wrecked the shot well it's mean it was a good shot but it you know it bounced out and I could see like penetration was like two it was like two or three inches nothing you just wrecked the whole thing the buck takes off and you're still processing the misery in your mind I'm saying they're going what just happened how did that happen and my phone goes off and and Ryan's like Jesus you didn't get any penetration there's 500 yards away and he's like this glowing arrow hanging out of it and I'm like

1:13:17ready to go to the field yeah we did all count dear dear for cover or dear for Kamad Eris yeah I was in the billboard that I blew it but it was so funny that that type of thing through I'm like I don't catch a break out here but the deer was fine he was seen him later two or three later but you hit those ribs just right and they can just take the take all the horsepower out of that and that bounce out to the right and again that was a heavy that was a heavy pretty heavy arrow yeah things happen things happen learn now and change everything when things happen that's what I used to I'd have a bad shot I'd change everything yeah it's it's so funny it's like I you know I went down to Africa and Paula went great will to be spent great second and Paula didn't go great oh gosh I start thinking like is it my equipment like show us should I do something different what was your weight on those the arrows? 46 pounds in 485 grains gosh

1:14:17on an African animal and you were you were bearing those right yeah I mean did did well I mean next year when I go back it's definitely gonna be it's definitely gonna be more poundage or more a more arrow weight for sure it's being that 550 range when you get a failure it always rings your bell like oh I need to change yeah yeah then I come home smoke that though she makes it 50 yards and dies and then the second doe I shoot I have this happening and then I go right back to it like oh what's I change what's I change it's like whenever you get a bad blood trail I'm getting rid of these two blades I'm never going back yeah and you hit a shoulder like I'm going to two blades just constantly chasing scenarios that's that's the way it is that's right I wish I wish anti-hunter's new hell important what I think it's hunters our top priority is clean kills absolutely I mean we'll do anything to get clean kills yeah and then it's it's it drives people crazy when they don't get one it's it's it's not good to see because they experience it but it's good to see
