Rai received his PhD at MIT in 1962, and taught at Tufts University and Princeton before returning to MIT. Among Rai's many distinguished awards is the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics, which he received along with Kip Thorne and Barry Barish "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves."
