孔子最大的抱負其實是在政治上，不過他最大的成就卻是在教育上。
在教育史上，他是好幾個方面的開創者，像是打破貴族才能求學的制度，不分貧富貴賤，只要有心求學，繳上「束脩」，一律施教，這就是有教無類成語的典故。

正因這幾個方面的開創，他被後世尊稱為「至聖先師」，甚至連康熙皇帝都親賜御筆「萬世師表」來讚頌他。
