美國Rice大學機械工程系的Preston教授在實驗室裡面發現一支死蜘蛛，「死蜘蛛」的腳向內捲縮成一團。
Preston教授研究了蜘蛛的運動方式，發現蜘蛛沒有「讓腳伸展的肌肉」而只有「讓腳縮起來的肌肉」。
當牠活著時，要如何讓腳伸展開來呢？
蜘蛛利用體腔收縮而使「血壓上升」時，腳就會因壓力增加而向外伸展；反之「血壓下降」時，腳就會向內捲縮起來。
蜘蛛的腳的動作，除了肌肉以外，主要是靠「液壓系統」在動作的。
