EP.874 The Gospel of Mark Chapter 15 The Separation

1:14that you're going to get something out of this particular chapter, this chapter 15 in the Gospel of Mark. In some ways I'm thankful that it lacks some of the detail that the other Gospels have because talking about the crucifixion is never an easy detail, especially when you really have an idea of what happened to our Lord Jesus Christ on this day for our benefit. So I guess I'm just going to pray right now and I'll show you what I prayed right before coming on air. Heavenly Father, I give you thanks for this day. I give you thanks for everyone in the community that joins live in particular Lord and for those listening and replay Lord. I pray that you touch each and every one of them with this message from your word, Father God, and I pray Holy Spirit that we don't need to focus on the pain and agony that our Lord suffered Lord, but Holy Spirit, I pray you show the glory

2:17of what happened. Lord, that we can focus on these things, not to negate what happened, Lord, but just to give us a deeper understanding and Holy Spirit that you'll give us a greater glory of what our Lord Jesus Christ did that day for us, for all of humanity and all those who accept Him. So Father, I pray for this study, Lord, I pray the Holy Spirit will speak through me and minister directly into the hearts of each and every person who hears the sound of my voice. In Jesus name, I pray, amen. All right, I usually do this at the end, but I'm just going to do it at the beginning very briefly. So, and if you want to support that as one way, you can do it. Thank you. Okay, we're going to read this section by section and tackle it. I want to read every word of this, obviously, but I'm probably, again, going to shy away from some of the things in here and just, well, let's see where the Holy Spirit leads us. Chapter 15. Early in the morning, the chief priests with the elders scribes in the entire council immediately held a consultation and they bound Jesus and led him away and turned him over to Pilate. Pilate questioned him. So, you are the king of the Jews and he answered him. It as you say,

4:19and the chief priest started accusing him of many things, but Pilate questioned him again, saying, do you offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against you, but Jesus said nothing further in answer. So, Pilate was amazed. Now, at the Passover feast, he used to release for them one prisoner whom they requested and the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt. And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them, Pilate answered. To them, saying, do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews? For he was aware that the chief priests had handed him over because of NB, but the chief priest stirred up the crowd and asked him to release Barabbas for them instead. And responding again, Pilate said to them, then what shall I do with him who you call the king of

5:25the Jews? They shouted back, crucify him, but Pilate said to them, why? What evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, crucify him, intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus logged, he handed him over to be crucified. So, as you'll remember, Jesus was praying in the Garden of Yosenehme, and of course, the disciples were sleeping, and like a thief in the night, they came to snatch him. And we talked a little bit about the parallel between the raptures, right? Because it's almost exactly as the rapture versus read in the Bible, and Jesus says, you know, be where you'll be awake because he might come as a thief in the night. So this was done in the overnight time, and then verse 15

6:31resumes, as as early the morning, the chief priests, with the elder scribes and the entire council immediately. So they wanted to do this before people were up and about, because they were scared, the masses would catch on and maybe hold these guys accountable. Not much has changed. In the times, as it. So this would have been, you know, first thing in the morning is like, sticks AM, sort of thing. So they bound Jesus and let him away and handed him over to Pilate. Now, Pilate's like the governor, right? And you have to understand, there was kind of a special cut out in society for the Jews because they complained so much, and they had a real attitude about themselves, you know, being whole year than now and this and that and special, but they were under Roman occupations. So they could make judgments, of course, and they did openly, but they couldn't carry

7:36out the sentencing. So they had to bring him to Pilate. And Pilate questioned him and they have to understand of all the things that they accused Jesus of. This is the only thing that Pilate, as governor in charge of that area for the Roman Empire, would have cared about. He says, so you are the king of the Jews. And Jesus answered him, it is as you say. So Jesus says, yeah, kind of am. Of course, we know from other gospel accounts that Jesus says, but, you know, the world is not my kingdom, my kingdom is not of this world, right? So there's further detail that Mark is missing here. But what's important was that Pilate had to make the determination of whether Jesus was a threat to the Roman Empire or not. That was it. He didn't care about

8:37the squabbling between the Pharisees and the scribes. They were, they were quite honestly appained to him. So Pilate started questioning again. And he gave a few other questions. He says, do you offer nothing in answer and see how many charges they're bringing against you? And we know that these are all false charges, right? Like, he's going to rip that temple down in three days and build it again. And, you know, all this stuff, which was just twisting of his words, of course, reminds you today, people have not changed. Have you noticed that? People have not changed. Human society has not changed. We might have different technologies, but that hasn't changed. Now, at the Passover feast, he was used to release them, one prisoner of whom they requested. And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed

9:38murder in the revolt. So it's a big charge revolting against the Roman Empire and murdering. And what Mark doesn't say here is that the scribes and the Pharisees, they had an organized plan. They went throughout the crowds and really worked up the crowds. No, we got to get this Jesus guy gone. Take it, Barabbas. He's a man of the people, you know, sort of thing. And it worked. It worked. And the crowd went up and then began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. Pilate answered them, saying, do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews? For he was aware that the, listen to this, he was aware that the chief priests had stirred up the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas, sorry, had handed over because of envy. See, even a non-religious

10:44guy saw, they were doing this out of envy. He threatened their power. That was it. That's why they followed them around for three years. Say, do a miracle. They'd seen plenty of miracles. They didn't care. And that's why, you know, sometimes they're witnessing the people. People will come and, you know, I get this quite a bit being a, being a podcaster. I'll get the odd person coming in and wanting to challenge me to see if I know the scripture or to argue about something. Doesn't happen that often, but it does happen. And I, you know what? I can almost immediately see the intent of their heart is not to get into the truth. It's not. They just want to trip it up and then use my words against me somehow. So I don't engage them. Wisdom from Jesus who didn't engage in those questions. He knew they were useless. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.

11:48And responding again, Pilate said to him, then what shall I do with whom you call the King of the Jews? They shouted back, crucify him. Now, we know what crucifixion is. But I want you to just imagine the scene for a second. This man is threatening their power, but he had done nothing. But he old people, healing the sick, beating the hungry, teaching, telling truths. But they scream, give him the worst punishment on earth. Can you see the self-centered nature of man willing to sacrifice someone else for their own ill-gotten games? And it's like a marginal game. Nothing. They really gained nothing other than he was a threat to their power.

12:53You know, even every one of those people who, and I'm not making a statement that I know if any of them became saved or not, I'm not saying that. But all those people at one point can stand before Jesus. Can you imagine being one of the ones plotting and getting the, and trying to convince as many people in the crowd to crucify Jesus? So Pilate released Barabbas for them and after having Jesus's flag, de-handed them over to be crucified. Now, we know that Pilate was very hesitant at doing this. He didn't want to do it. We know this from the other gospel accounts. And even if you'll recall from our study in Matthew, I believe it was Matthew, that Pilate's wife had had this dream and sent message, don't you don't want to get involved with this stuff? Like, you know, this is serious. And, you know, Pilate took that seriously. But he wanted to please the crowd. He wanted to satisfy the crowd.

14:01Let me just say something to you. Verse 15, intent on satisfying the crowd. I let released Barabbas for them. You know, doing what's popular is almost always the wrong thing to do. Taking the easy path is almost the wrong thing to do. Being a leader and just wanting to satisfy the crowd, almost the wrong thing to do every time. Verse 16, now the soldiers took him away into the palace that is called Crittorium and they called together the whole Roman cohort and they dressed him in purple. And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him and they began saluting him, Hail King of the Jews. And they repeatedly beat his head with a reed and spit on him and kneeling they bowed down before him. And after they had mocked him, they took the purple cloak off and put on his own garments on him

15:06and they let him out to crucify him. And they compelled a passerby from coming from the country Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. This is an interesting statement. Mark, I think, is the only one who gives the detail of this Cyrene, Simon of Cyrene. It actually even gives his son's names. So this tells you that this man and his family were known. They were definitely known. And they are forever now because of Mark's gospel. So it's funny that the Lord had orchestrated this man to be passing by, probably coming into town for Passover and he sees this horrific scene going on and he's compelled to carry the cross with Jesus. Wow. They brought him to the place of Golgotha, which is translated

16:11place of Skull. And they tried to give him wine mixed with mirth, but he did not take it and they crucified him and divided up his garments for themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man would take. Now it was the third hour when they crucified him, the inscription on the charge against him read the King of the Jews. Now I want to, I'm not going to flip there, but if you are fairly new to Bible study or to the faith, I would really encourage you to go read Psalm 22. This is Psalm of David. Now we know Jesus was born of the line of David, but Psalm 22 was written approximately a thousand years before the crucifixion. And not only does it perfectly describe the

17:19crucifixion, it's written in first person. So it's like the Lord is writing it about himself using David's hand, but it talks about his clothes being ripped, asked for lots. It's stunning. The prophetic word about this crucifixion. Also, I don't want to talk much about the flogging, but I just want to point out something to you and most of you would know this, I think. But what is the significance of crucifixion? And by the way, when David wrote that Psalm, Psalm 22, and there's others like Isaiah 53 and other areas of the Bible that predict this, but Psalm 22 is stunning. Crucifixion did not exist at the time when it was written. Pretty interesting. But to be crucified really meant to be hung on a tree. And the way they designed it obviously was for maximum

18:23torture, elongated torture. But when you look at the synchronicity of God's word and how every bit of this was planned from the beginning to the end, the first Adam, and I say that because Jesus is the second Adam, right? He's the first new creation, God and man making a way for us, where Adam was walking in fellowship with God uninterrupted because there was no sin. But the eight of the tree and sin entered the world, they realized they were naked and you know the story. So Jesus going back in some ways, well, to the place of the skull, which is death and sin was promised even in the devil's deception to the woman that it would cause death. So Jesus went to the place of death and back to the tree.

19:27You know, it's been said that the sin he took on, all of the sin for the world was nailed to the tree. So the original sin came from the tree in the fruit and man ate it. If you ever realize this before, let me know in the comments. But Jesus is returning the sin by nailing it to the tree. And of course, we know we took it down to hell and left it there. And they crucified two rebels with him one on his right and one on his left. Those passing by were hurling abuse at him, shaking their heads and saying, Ha, you are going to destroy the temple and rebuild in three days. Save yourself by coming down off the cross. We just stopped there. What's significant about them saying save yourself come off the cross? Well, they're showing that they're tools of the devil.

20:28After Jesus had fasted for 40 days, what was the temptation? Throw yourself off of here. Surely the angels will pick you up, but he didn't. Let this Christ, the King of Israel, come down from the cross so that we may see and believe those who were crucified with him were also insulting him. Now, do you think they meant it if he came off the cross, they would see and believe, oh, I'm just looking at the chat. It's not broadcasting on rumble. Well, that's weird. Oh, that's really weird. Oh, let me see. I'm sorry, sorry to about that. I don't know what happened with rumble. It was all set up. I know that. But I'm glad we got YouTube. So even the rebels were shouting at him. We know later that one got saved.

21:32Verse 33. When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice. Eloi, Eloi, lemma, subacte, nay, which has translated my God, my God. Why have you forsaken me? I really want to focus on this section here. So the sixth hour, that would have been around noon. So he'd been on the cross for three hours at this point. The day would have started at 6 a.m. then 9 a.m. then 12 o'clock, then 3 o'clock and so on. That's how they would measure the day. Darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour for three hours.

22:37Interesting, right? A lot of threes here, even verse 33. Not trying to get into any crazy stuff here, but just saying, take notice. Why did darkness fall over the whole land? And I tend to think it was like half of the earth is always in darkness. The other half is in light. We know that just from the world being round and the sun going round, but I think the sun just stopped shining its light. I really believe that. So over the whole land, why would it do that? Well, I think it's obvious. Jesus is the light of the world. Now I'm not saying he's the sun in the sky. Like we don't do sun worship in that way or anything like that. But I think the sun in the sky symbolically, I think creation mimics God. Why wouldn't God create creation

23:46somewhat in his image? That's why I did that whole series of decoding the power of three. But the the land went dark because the light of the world left. And we know that from Jesus' own words, right here, my God, my God. Why have you forsaken me? Now Jesus knows the answer to this question, because he knew he had to take the sin of the world. And he put the sin of the world in the fire to be burnt, disposed of. That sin was before the birth of Christ and after the death of Christ. It's for your sin to moral even. It was put into the fire and burnt for all those who

24:47choose Jesus. But in order for Jesus to do that, to go into that place, he had to be separated from the Father. Now we know that Jesus and the Father and the Holy Spirit are one. But for a brief period, Jesus had to be separate. First of a new creation, the new Adam. And he went down and he preached. And he rose again on the third day. I've pointed this out before on this broadcast. But many of you are parents. And of course, and so we should focus on the sacrifice that Jesus made. He took the punishment. Man, like we could no one can imagine. One day, we'll know it because we'll be brought into all knowing. But being a father, knowing your kid had to do this, sacrifice one for the many.

25:58Like would you let your child die to save the world? I think most of us would. Not an easy thing to do. To do imagine seeing your child. I personally believe that the Father felt every stripe. He felt what he felt and the Holy Spirit felt knowing what was going to happen. And then when it happened, they suffered greatly along with Christ. So I want to make that a mention because not too many people will say that. But we know it's a family structure. The Father, the Holy Spirit, sacrificed to. And when the bystanders heard him, they began saying, look, he is calling for Elijah. And some ran and filled a sponge with sour wine and put it on a read and gave him a drink

26:59saying, let us see if Elijah comes and takes him down. But Jesus let out a loud cry and died. Verse 38. And the veil of the temple was torn from two from the top to the bottom. Verse 38. Why is it important that Scripture tells us that the veil was ripped from the top to the bottom? The veil was the curtain per se that was over the entrance to the holiest of holies in the temple. And in the temple only the high priest could enter in there and he had to have all kinds of protections and a sacrifice and all kinds of things to enter in to the physical presence of God. Now God wasn't sitting there. It was just his presence, his power, and it was significant for many

28:01reasons why God goes to do that before sending Christ. But if man had reached God on his own, it would have been ripped from the bottom up. But instead the veil was ripped from the top down. And what does that mean? It means God has allowed from above access into his presence because of Jesus. And of course we know that a temple is not required anymore. Sacrifices are not required anymore. Jesus was the sacrifice. Jesus was the fulfillment of the law. Is the fulfillment of the law? And Jesus made a way for us to have direct connection with God. I know that certain religious factions will make arguments that a father having going to a father and confessing in that as

29:02holy. And you know, there is something good to confess amongst your brethren and have accountability. But we don't talk to God through other people, especially dead people, verse 39. And when this insurion who was standing right in front of him saw that he died in this way, he said, truly this man was the son of God. Now I find this fascinating because he's standing right in front of him. He sees and it doesn't record in here that the whole earth shook, but the earth shook. It went dark and coincided with him screaming out. And isn't it interesting that a Gentile was the first one to say it out loud and recognize that he was the son of God as recorded by the Bible.

30:07When evening had already come since it was the preparation day, that is the day before the Sabbath, Joseph, Aramaia, came a prominent member of the council who was himself also waiting for the kingdom of God, meaning he's a believer. And he gathered up to encourage and went before Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Now Pilate wondered if he was dead by this time and summoned the sentrian he questioned him whether he was already dead. And after learning from the sentrian, he granted the body to Joseph. Joseph brought a linen cloth, took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out in the raw. And he rolled the stone against the interns of the tomb, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph were watching to see where he was laid. That cloth now called the shroud of turran is probably one of the most amazing

31:15evidences of Jesus ever. If you haven't looked into it, I don't want to get all scientific on it, but you know, we know that we have like 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent. Well, that shroud of terror, shroud of turran only has 23 chromosomes, which means immaculate conception. And there's a whole bunch of other stuff.
