Life By Design — Ep 516 How To Create Lasting Change In Your Life. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Most people are living a life they've never consciously chose. They are living from beliefs they've inherited, fears they've accepted, opinions they've absorbed, and limitations they've repeated so often that they now believe they're facts. They are living by default. Living a life by design is about waking up to the truth that you are not stuck with the person you have been and the life you've created so far. You get to choose who you become. You get to question what you believe. You get to decide what you focus on. You get to take responsibility for your energy, your time, your health, your money, and the direction of your life. You cannot change yesterday, but you can decide who you become next. Welcome to On Wealth. How to create lasting change in your life.
That title of this episode is a little deceiving. But before I get into that, I got to, it's Friday. It is a beautiful, beautiful day. It's going to be about, I don't know, 25 degrees Celsius, 26 degrees Celsius. That's in the 80s for those of you in America. They're working on the Fahrenheit and the sun is out and the skies are blue. I was up early this morning. I am having the most amazing morning. I got up and I read. I read, I drank water and I read and then I made some coffee and then I did my stretching, my exercise, my yoga, I practiced my yoga and then I journaled and then I did a little bit of work, a little bit of woodwork and then meditated. So it's about 7.30 in the morning, like I was up at 4. I'm having the most amazing morning. Which kind of leads me into what today is about how to create lasting change in your life
and why that title is misleading is if you've listened to me for any amount of time or if this is your first time, I will tell you, I really do not like the question how. It's weak, it's transactional, it is, you know, like how, well, it would just give me the manual from my key to put a table together. You know the how, if it was how it would just be a flow chart, it would be step one, step two, step three. Life is not a flow chart. So today we're going to talk about creating lasting change. Now I want to talk about two things. Well, you know what, before I get into that, except this, it's not a light switch. You know, you've read a book, you're like, I'm going to read this book and it's going to change my life. No, it's not. And I'm not telling you negative, I'm telling you factual. It's not. There's no light switch.
There's not a podcast episode that's a light switch. There is not a book that is a light switch. There's not a seminar that you'll go to a conference or anything like that. There is a light switch. It is, it's going to flick on and all sudden life changes. It doesn't work like that. Now you could read a book and get momentum. Absolutely. Listen to this episode, you get momentum. Absolutely. Go to go to a conference like a Tony Robbins event, which are amazing. You get momentum. But what do we know about momentum? And momentum is a match. It burns bright. And then it burns out. Momentum is not sustainable. So life is a momentum. You know, that's not sustainable. You know what, I love momentum. I love the feeling of it. But it is not sustainable. It's not a light switch. So two things. Limiting beliefs and learning behaviors.
I want you to think of them as exactly the same. They align. So you're learned to behaviors how you act, your personality, your personal reality, how you see things is based on your limiting beliefs. Do you know what it takes to change a limiting belief? First of all, you have to be aware that it is a limiting belief. And that sounds kind of funny, right? Because they're so normal, they're comfortable. They're an old pair of shoes. They just fit right. So we don't question our limiting beliefs because we don't see them as limits. We see them as reality, right? Our personal reality, our limiting beliefs are both the same. To change a limiting belief. First of all, you have a belief. And then you behave based on that belief. Here's a great example.
Here's a good example. Say you want to open your own business, right? You want to be your own boss. You want to be an entrepreneur. Right now you're working for somebody. You're like, oh, it is so risky. What if I lose all my money? Right, you already believe in that you're going to fail. And so how do you behave? You don't open the business. I mean, like it is that simple where as soon as you believe that you're going to fail, you will not open the business. Your behavior is staying at your job because your belief is I can't do it. That's your limiting belief. Failure is possible. But it's an option. It is one thing that can happen. Think of it as one of ten. Ten things could happen and failure, like going out of business would be one of them. There's nine other good things that could happen that could come out of it.
Right? And my thing isn't here. I'm not here to talk about business. Although, gosh, I love talking about business. So your limiting beliefs dictate your learned behaviors, your patterns. So how do we go? How do we change that? Let's go backwards. Right? That's how we're going to change. We're going to go backwards. Not going to look in time. And I think that. But the path forward is you always have a limiting belief and you behave accordingly. To go backwards, change your behavior. And then watch your limiting belief change. That's what I mean about going backwards. You have to take the action. And then you believe you can. Now you're like, okay, Steve. So you say, and open the business and then I believe I'll succeed. No, that's actually not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is start small. It's small, incremental changes in your life.
So let's get back to the question of how. How do I change? Now we've all heard somebody ask like, find your why. You know, which, yes, absolutely, find your why. But okay, I'm not a big fan of when people talk and abstract ways like, find your why and you'll be able to do it. So let's walk through your why. Let's find that together. You know, Steve, how do I change? I want to be able to get up early in the morning and exercise. I don't want to watch TV. How do I want to change? Why do I want to change? You know, like, I want to exercise. I don't feel like going to the gym. So how do I change? Well, here's my question. Why do you want to? Why do you want to change for the sake of changing? Do you know how much power is behind that? None. None. I exercise every day. Now I didn't always do that.
I didn't. And you're like, okay, Steve, well, why do you want to exercise every day? Because I am getting older. We're all getting older. I'm 61 years old. I celebrated a birthday last week. Do you know why I exercise? Because I refuse to age. I'm getting older. Time is passing. I refuse to age. I refuse to allow my body to break down. And exercise is important. This is why I meditate. I don't want my brain to break down. I read. I don't want my brain to break down. You know, I pray. I don't want my spiritual health to break down. You know, like my gratitude, I surround myself with the right people. I don't want my mental health to break down. Right? This is why I do the things I do. Because in the end, I want to enjoy my life to the fullest every single day.
I have zero aches and pains. I mean zero. It's a journey. Am I the most flexible person out there? No, not even close. It's not a competition. How you're more flexible today than I was yesterday. And last week. And it's the small changes. Do you think that I really said, hey, man, you know what? I want to, you know, like I want to look like Charles Atlas. Oh my God. If you even know Charles Atlas is, you know, like I, we could want, want, want, want, want. I'm talking about going to the gym. I know I go to the gym. I didn't build muscle the first day. Maybe I did. Maybe it wasn't measurable. I don't know. I couldn't, you know, like, but you go every day until it becomes routine. Then we see I take the action and then it becomes such a part of me. And then I start to see the results. I'm like, whoa, this does work now because I'm like, oh, I'll never get big.
That's my limiting belief. You know, like I'll never build muscle. I'll never be, no, I go to the gym every day and all the sudden I see. So creating lasting change. Take the actions every single day. Now you're like, Steve, I love when I do that to talk about myself and third person, Steve. I don't have the time. You're right. You're right. If you don't believe you do, you're 100% right. Two things. One, when you choose to do something, you're choosing not to do something else. It's that simple. All right. You choose to watch TV. You're choosing not to read a book. All right. You're choosing to eat cake. You're choosing not to lose weight. As you make a choice. You're choosing one or the other. You know, like whatever you're choosing to do, you're also choosing not to do. Okay. That's like the hard course, you know, slap in the face. But let's be a little more gentle.
Here's the deal. Don't do everything. It's going to become overwhelming and you'll quit. You know what? If you, say you want to exercise, right? And you don't know, I can't fit into my schedule. I get to get to gym membership. The gym's a mile away. What am I going to do in the rain? The cold that don't have a parking lot. Blah blah blah blah blah. No, stop. Stop. Be gentle. If you want to be healthier, if you want to be physically healthier, I'm a big fan, first of all, of removing. Don't put on your plate. Remove. You want to be physically healthier? Give me a potato chips. Get rid of junk food. Stop drinking sugary drinks. You know, like, let's take off first. And then when you talk about adding, don't go to the gym. You know what? You want to be healthier? Do one push up today. That's it. Do one push up. If you could do two, then do two.
Do you see where I'm going? Don't go, oh my gosh. I'm going to have to learn how to work on arms and shoulders and back and chest. And legs and calves and, you know, like, oh, stop. Just do a push up. Just do one. Just start. If you could do three, you know what? By the next Friday, maybe you're up to five. All right. How amazing would that be? Now, think about this. If you did it six months ago, think about how many of you would have today? The two best days to plant a tree. Twenty years ago today, I can't go back in time. Twenty years. But I'm here today. And that's how you create lasting change. You need to take action first and the beliefs will follow. Now there's one more thing you can do. And this is big. If you ever bought, you ever bought, I don't know, an apple, a bag of apples. You get home and you don't notice, but one is rotted.
You get like a rotted, a bad apple. Do you know what's going to happen to the rest of the apples really soon? They'll all be rotted. One apple will affect all the apples around it. Did you know that, right? I mean, it's not, it's pretty obvious that applies to people too. If you really are serious about change, you're right about creating the lasting change, look at your environment. Look at the people around you. If you want a plant to thrive, you don't fix the plant, you fix the soil where the plant grows. Look at your environment, look how you live. Look at the people you surround yourself with. These are all the things that you can do. Just evaluate. Are they for me or from me? That's the real simple. Are they for me or are they from me?
That's really just what you have to ask. If this is your first time listening to this podcast, welcome. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for taking your time and spending it with me. Stay tuned. Continue listening. Make this part of your routine. I have a deadline for me to do something. My deadline for me is October 1st. By October 1st, I want to have something done. In October 2nd, I will share. You know what? Before I say that, I should probably look and see what day October 1st and October 2nd is. You know what? I'm sitting here right now and I have no idea. I don't have my phone, anything like that. Anyway, the closest day, weekday after that, whatever day that is. But October 1st is my deadline for my change on something very, very important that I
want to share with you. And of course, everything I do benefits you. You know what? This is how I do things. And I wish you a wonderful weekend.
