近年來，很多科學家們認為人類未來會移居到火星，除了在火星上的食衣住行之外，最重要的是搭乘太空船回程的推進燃料！
NASA曾表示，燃料是靠「甲烷＋液態氧」，一趟飛行需載著30噸重的燃料，運費大約要80億美金，換成台幣大概是兩千兩百億相當於台北市一年預算的1.3倍(太貴了…)！
喬治亞理工學院的研究團隊，提出新的設計跟燃料，先搭建「藍菌（藍綠藻）農場」，火星有二氧化碳跟水，在藍菌農場裡面進行光合作用合成葡萄糖，產生氧氣供火箭使用，接著利用消化酶將藍菌分解、留下葡萄糖，由大腸桿菌把葡萄糖發酵變成「2,3-丁二醇」！
