日本動漫流行少年偵探團，而在紐西蘭有「哈密頓少年博物學家團」，在1962年創立，年齡層在10-18歲的青少年！
2006年1月11日，他們在紐西蘭北島的卡威亞港進行化石探勘，原本想找一些貝殼化石，意外發現一塊超過一百公斤重的大石板，是企鵝的化石，目前在瓦依卡多博物館展示。
瓦依卡多博物館、紐西蘭的梅西大學跟美國的布魯斯博物館合作組成研究團隊，對這些化石進行研究，發現化石的年代約在2730萬年～3460萬年前，是「凱魯庫大企鵝」！
一般的凱魯庫企鵝站立的高度約1.3公尺，但這次發現化石中的企鵝約1.4公尺，最後被科學家命名為「凱魯庫長腳企鵝」！
