EP 3829 What you walk past is what you accept

About this episode

What you walk past in life is what you accept.

Every day, you make decisions about what you are willing to tolerate. Sometimes those decisions are conscious. More often, they happen quietly. You ignore the behaviour that frustrates you. You avoid the difficult conversation. You allow poor standards at work, in your relationships or within yourself because confronting them feels harder than putting up with them.

The problem is that tolerance becomes culture.

What you repeatedly allow eventually becomes normal. What becomes normal becomes your standard. And your standards shape the quality of your life, your relationships, your leadership and your future.

In this episode of The Strong Life Project, Shaun O’Gorman explores why resilience is not simply about enduring difficult circumstances. Real resilience also requires the courage to recognise what is not working and take responsibility for changing it.

This applies to leadership, relationships, family, work and personal development. If you continually walk past poor behaviour, weak boundaries, excuses, disrespect or declining standards, you are teaching yourself and the people around you that those things are acceptable.

Being a strong leader does not mean controlling everyone around you. It means having the courage to establish clear standards and consistently live by them yourself.

If you want stronger relationships, better leadership and greater personal resilience, start by asking yourself a simple question:

Hey guys welcome to today's podcast today's episode watch it walk past is what you accept So this is no classic it's something that your parents probably told you when you're a kid something that we talk about often right But it is very much this whole idea that whatever you accept in your life whatever you walk past I is what you accept so whatever that behavior somebody who is behaving poorly who's being You know bullying someone else someone who's dishonor someone who is Just not a great human if you walk past that you essentially give tacit approval for that and That is the premise of that what you walk past you accept and this happens for so many things in your life So it happens with other people, but it equally happens for you What you walk past in your life with yourself you accept so and that's basically like the things that you just put up with If you don't get up in the morning, you'll do what you should do if you're not training if you're not looking after yourself You don't meditate and I try to be a better person you drink too much eat poorly you do whatever whatever the thousand different things

That is a possibility in your life That's the thing that you're looking at to go if I do this Then if I walk past this then that's what I'm accepting and that's the part that I think most people Probably don't do so well in their life. They don't do that Taking responsibility and acceptance for themselves and the things that they should do So what I've come to expect from myself is I don't walk past the difficult things I don't walk past the things in my life that I know Need to be addressed either with myself or someone else So I've had so many of my life is a difficult person. I don't ignore Like what they're doing if it's something that's impacting me or something I care about if like for instance And this hasn't happened, but if I was walking down the street and I saw someone Being violent towards someone else that I wouldn't walk past that if I saw a man being violent towards his partner He's girlfriend. I absolutely would not walk past that. I would address that if I saw someone treating your child poorly Or you know whatever that was I wouldn't walk past that I would address that Because if you walk past it you accept it and I think there's so many things in our life and in society these days

where we people are afraid to Step in or Have difficult conversations or address things that need to be addressed Because of that fear or that feeling that they will be heavily judged or they will be Ostracized or canceled or whatever version of any of those things it might occur So what I find these days, it's really important is that we actually Help people to be encouraged To learn how to have courage. That was extremely Our confusing sentence, but we Help people develop the courage to actually stand up for what's right and whatever circumstance or whatever mechanism or whatever situation they might be in And for me those things can be very simple things But it's the ability to actually go you know that that's not okay and we shouldn't be Accepting that thing this person's behaving in a particular way that's just absolutely not something that we should be Looking at or accepting and therefore we should be like

doing something about that and it can be so many little aspects for me It's a friend of mine. I've been helping out recently with something in their life and Someone in their life is a very difficult manipulative pretty narcissistic individual And I've spent a lot of time helping them given them some sort of advice to be a counsel and how to manage that and it's Their process is actually working out really well And it's something that because when I was talking this friend of mine I could see they were going through this challenge and stress and there was a bit of difficulty They were telling me about it and I was like, fuck I just can't walk past this So I said to him hey if you're really if you want me help with that I'm really happy to help you And they were like, oh you know I feel bad asking you help blah blah blah but We've got to this really really good positive outcome for them In a situation that was really difficult and something that for many years it caused a moment stress That's what I'm talking about. It's not walking or walking past even things like that Where I could easily have just gone well, it's not my business if they want my help. They'll ask me But I was like maybe they won't so I said hey Do you want my help? I might be able to help you give you some perspective. I've been through a similar situation

They'll like you that'll be great and we got a great result So walking to pass the things in your life that you know aren't great is you giving your tasks at approval and saying you accept that you accept that that's okay And I just don't accept that it is okay Because I think we are way too hesitant These days to actually stand up for people and do what we what needs to be done I think we're way too hesitant in the way that we Just want to Bear our heads in the sand. I guess and ignore the reality of what might be occurring around us There's a whole lot of different things that we just don't do that well societally but Individually as well and for me now I look at it and go you know as a police officer It's not something I would ever do. I would never walk past something that I thought wasn't okay I go so why should it be any different now that I'm a civilian and it shouldn't be And this comes down to so many different things in our lives that I think is extremely

Difficult and challenging because there are way too many Examples and instances in life. I believe where people are doing Things are just done okay, but we sort of just sit back and let it occur And it's easy to do because addressing these difficult things is difficult I have another friend of mine that I was um Helper out with some family stuff very recently and it was a similar sort of circumstance Someone in their family that was just not behaving great And now I like I'm not sure how to manage it. I said I think you know you need to do this if particular thing you need to have these conversations and they did that and again It wasn't easy again. They certainly wasn't something I loved doing wasn't something that was easy that the outcome gave them the outcome Well, probably not the outcome they wanted actually, but it actually brought about the Made the circumstance better so it's still challenging but it's better. They're not engaging with the person as much All these things and that was again a situation where they actually called me were talking to me about it

And I said hey, I think you should do this or that And it's this willingness and ability to actually engage and offer help, offer advice give people your perspective It might be you know you know someone who's challenged by a particular thing and you go hey could I help you and whether that's You know, hey, um, I know you've been going through this difficult challenge and whatever it is in your life. Hey, I know that you're If you need a lift to the airport like I don't care what it is. It's just simple stuff. None. It doesn't have to be hugely difficult things But it's not walking past people who need help. It's not walking past things that don't Work well It's actually trying to have an influence and an impact on circumstances and situations that you come across that You believe need that income that need that impact and when we are in a society, I think where because of the whole cancel culture thing and all the stuff that went on for the last few years people get a less willing or less um I don't know what

Just less courageous maybe To stand up to the things that don't work and stand up to people that don't work Then I think that to me becomes a difficult situation where we put people into a place where they Feel challenged to actually step up and do the things that they want to do or they know should be done We again somebody stands up to do something and then everybody else goes oh, I'm not gonna say that because I'll get in trouble That's you know that is walking past something and accepting it And the more that we're willing to go hey, you know what? I actually don't like that thing I don't think it's all right In a workplace in a family Wherever I like it's it's just a simple thing as if You're in your family and money your family members has been a bit of a dick to someone else and you're just like hey How about cut it out? That's not okay It doesn't have to be this big grandiose gesture in public when somebody's in trouble It can be the simplest things in our own lives where we're like hey Actually, why don't you pull your freaking head in because that thing you're doing not okay and

I think they're the sort of things that when we have the courage to Stand up for what we believe in there's another circumstance in my life at the moment where I'm doing exactly that thing helping someone Given them so advice and something and it's because it's nothing to do with me this situation at all But I'm so willing to help because I believe in the fact that something needs to be done about it And if I'm able to give some assistance this person and help them do that then I will do that Because I think it's important and all of these things become Easier to manage and deal with when there are more people doing it So if you look at my police mental health, I've been doing that for years and more and more people are starting to get Evolved not okay great because it really needs to change whatever the things are But you can't walk past it and Not realize you are accepting it the police mental health stuff is a classic thing I mean work it on that for years because I was like this is bullshit before anyone else I'd seen has was doing this stuff on it now people come out of the woodwork Cool like I don't have a problem with that But I go I got I started getting involved in doing that stuff early because I was like you know what there is a need

And even I was hesitant to do it at first But these are the things that if you walk past it you accept it if you walk past the situation or a circumstance It isn't good you accept it if you walk past a group of people or an individual being treated like shit And you don't do something about it you accept it If you walk past your own future behavior and just accept it Then you accept it So if you're someone who's not training the people in your life that you love the way you should equally Don't just let yourself off the hook have the courage to fucking do something about it Because I think we all need to have a little bit more courage these days and standing up to the people who do the wrong things Because the silent majority is definitely silent And the vocal minority of people who are Manipulative narcissistic difficult destructive people seem to be gaining more and more traction and have a lot of voice So we really need to start standing up to do something if we want to change the things in our lives that are important to us If that's on a World country societal family individual level all of those things We need to be more willing to have a voice and not walk past the things that we know are not okay
