1881年，天文學家西蒙·紐康在圖書館查對數表時，發現從書的側面看過去，有些頁面比較髒，有些頁面就比較乾淨。這時西蒙·紐康發現對數表包含以1起首的數那首幾頁較其他頁破爛。然而西蒙·紐康針對這個問題作了一些研究以及物理學家法蘭克·班佛在1938年也發現這個現象，持續研究得到驗證，因此就有了班佛定律。
