从前有个比丘，闻思精进，智慧明达。到了晚年，身患重病，生活穷困潦倒。弟子问他：“师父，您已经证得阿罗汉果位了吗？”他回答说：“没有，尚未证得。”弟子不解的问到：“和尚道高德重，声名远播，为什么还没有证得阿罗汉果？”
比丘师父说：“我已经证得斯陀含果位， 但还没有达到阿那含与阿罗汉的果位。”
弟子听了，更加不解，又问：“您既然已证得斯陀含果位，为什么没有更进一步趋向阿罗汉果位呢？”
