From massive steel spans lifting into the air to roadway sections rotating out of the way, movable bridges combine structural engineering, mechanical systems, electrical controls, and careful coordination to keep vehicles and waterway traffic moving.
In Engineering Insights S2 E93, we explore the engineering behind drawbridges and movable bridge systems.
We look at bascule bridges that rotate upward, vertical-lift bridges that raise the roadway, and swing bridges that pivot horizontally. Each design solves a different engineering problem while requiring a structure capable of carrying traffic and moving safely and repeatedly.

Modern movable bridges can also incorporate computerized monitoring and automated controls to identify problems before they become dangerous.
Then there is the structure itself.
Every opening and closing cycle creates repeated loads and stresses. Engineers have to consider fatigue, corrosion, wind, vibration, temperature changes, water exposure, and long-term maintenance.
A movable bridge isn't simply a structure that happens to move.
It's a carefully integrated machine and structural system designed to perform the same complicated sequence thousands of times.
